The thread on Japanese trends got me thinking, how do tumblr trends develop? Many of them stem from Japanese fashions right? Who starts that shit?

Not trying to be snarky but what trend is that pic supposed to represent?

Isn't it usually started from people imitating a specifically popular person? Like starrpowerr, creepyyeha and so on? And those popular people sorta copy/get inspired from each other as well.

Generic tumblr fashion that is only worn for a mirror shot and won't see the light of day. I think they call it "soft sisters" if an Asian is wearing it. Basically bullshit.

Oh yeah, I remember reading about soft sisters awhile back on here and wondered what it was. makes sense.
I think it's started from people imitating popular people BUT I really think the progression is more like this:
>Japan starts a trend
>more savvy tumblr users who read Japanese store blogs and keep up to date on that kind of thing get on the trend
>super popular tumblr user who follows these savvy bloggers sees trend and copies it
>everyone else copies it

I just used it because it is pastelbat. She was popular back in the day, right?

Who are the new popular ones?

I see this same "trend following" with drawing styles in the tumblr-artist community.
It annoys the shit out of me. One artist gets a consistent style going and people blatantly take it on as their own.
I think it's because tumblr skews toward younger "trend-followers" not... setters. It's easier to just, y'know, copy some other aesthetic than actually take the time and effort to build your own.

Reminds me of theicarustheory. I stumbled across one of their art and mistook it for johannathemad's, and went ahead and looked at the rest of their art tag. They clearly copied trending tumblr styles, right down to the gross red noses.
And it's so sad, because when she draws seriously, she's really good. Pic related.

This seems about right, especially the super popular Tumblrs copying the more Jfashion savvy less popular Tumblrs. And then all the lil sheep herds copy the popular ones then that style goes Tumblr viral.

Also, forgot to mention, the so called 'soft sister' look was made popular by Amo especially modelling Katie and Candy Stripper.

Was Minori the one who started this kind of fashion? If so I feel bad for her since everyone's starting to copy her now..

>Come across some picture on my dashboard that looks like this one chick's art, but I don't remember her drawing it
>Or maybe it's this other girl's art? Their styles are really similar.
>mfw it's some third person that I've never heard of.
It was all exactly the same style, down to brush thickness.

A lot of what makes tumblrart bad is the mimicry. There's no development or honing of their styles so they try really hard to copy(unsuccessfully) and it ends up looking bad since they're being so tryhard.

Two reasons that seem to have come up-

The big ugly noses is because of it being a western style, so they want to draw people with a defining feature that's non-asian. Same with freckles or darker skin. In the end they also probably don't even know how to draw noses, so a big beak or half-circle is all they can muster in the end.

As for the red nose, when drawing faces you're supposed to use certain hues of color in different areas (basically a slight hint of blue yellow or red) and the nose is one of those red areas. But people on tumblr go total overkill with it and make all their drawings look like sick New Englanders and try to justify it because it's where your blood goes and other stupid excuses.

> It's easier to just, y'know, copy some other aesthetic than actually take the time and effort to build your own.

Literally the mantra of the deviantart kawaii drawing community and the reason behind nearly half the fights in it.
