Hi there. I'm 100% new to cosplaying and I looked over the tutorial link and google completely fail-boated my ass. So here I am, asking you pros how to go about this.

I just need to know how to make that armor not look like it came from someone who had a nail lodged into their brain.

What material/paints/tools should I use? How I do I make it not look lame?

I assume there's foam/sanding involved, but what type(s?) should I use to maximize the "realistic" factor of it? I'd assume some gloss, but there's a myriad of paints out there and I need to nail the right one(s).

Any help/advise is super appreciated and sorry for derping up the place. I am teh cosplay nub, and lurker of these boards.

step 1. lurk for the help thread, progress thread, crafts thread, or Work in Progress thread. You'll find lots of building tips other anons use there.

step 2. Brainstorm what you want to cosplay. Since you're brand new to costume making, I highly recommend starting small. Go post in the suggestions thread to get more cosplay ideas.

step 3. Learn how to work with cheap materials like cardboard or maybe paper. Practice makes perfect, and learning what works now will save you a world of pain later.

step 4. month(s) from now. when you are comfortable working with cheap materials, start working your way up into foams, leather, plastics, fabrics...
Learn how to sew, it'll save you in a pinch. But hopefully with enough practice your skills will become competent enough to make almost anything.

And there is no one set way to achieve a goal, you can make a prop out of almost anything. And if all else fails, or you have lots of money, you can buy a costume.

Now what I want you to do is reply to me witj what you are capable of making at this moment, your budget, and how much time you can allot. Any preferred materials to work with? Odd quirks?
