Got a good chunk of Satsuki's middle school uniform skirt done yesterday. First time stitching on the waistband in the ditch -- it's not perfect everywhere but I'll get better with practice.

I'm gonna finish the skirt/zipper first to see how it sits, but the pleats are currently popping out at my hips -- can I get away with sewing them down a few more inches, do you think?

No photos because I haven't cut the fabric today, but I finally figured out how to properly shape the shoulder on a custom block. I've just been re-cutting after making mock-ups. I tried using tutorials and books and videos and no one has really done a very good job explaining the process, so today I just sat down, cut pieces of paper and started moving them around, and it clicked. This isn't going to save me hours or anything, but it'll save me an extra round of muslins at least.

This is my progress so far on Beast Boy. It's my first time making a super-suit and forming the arms and muscles has been really fun. It's for Reinhard von Lohengramm from LoGH (blond dude in the cape at the bottom). Still on the fence about the version of his uniform with the cape. On one hand, I enjoy capes, but on the other, it'll cover up most of the embroidery so it seems like a bit of a waste. He wears this rank (well, I guess technically the cape/etc is rank insignia too, but the underlying uniform is the same) both ways so it's not like it's an accuracy issue.

The uniform details shift around a lot, so I kinda just picked what I thought would work best (this is an older illustration, so that bit I just finished in passing looks way different––later on they started making it a bit bigger and sometimes it's a smooth curve and sometimes it turns up on the sides). I had to make some adjustments to the design proportions already because I have tiny girl shoulders apparently, so there wasn't as much space to work with on the bib.

I love the shirt though! I posted in the help thread and found my way around the sleeves (it's my first from scratch shirt). I finished all the hems and edges for once and the thing is pretty durable and I'm proud of it despite it being a simple seifuku top.

Oh wait, I forgot I was going to ask about the socks. I look so much better in OTKs than knee highs like the character wears, so that explains the stupid middle ground I was trying to make with my knee highs. Is it a big deal to wear inaccurate socks in cosplay especially when each character from the show wears their socks different lengths? I just so much prefer high stockings like what the twins in Clannad wear over Nagisa's knee highs.

FINALLY got to test fit some of this! I cant wear the head in my apartment since its way too tall. The other shoulder is done and fits but I still have to adjust them both and add some more details. Once thats done I will do another test fit with both shoulders, bicep armor and the arms.

Its actually much easier to wear and more mobile than I first expected. The torso will need some extra padding in a few places since a few sharp parts jab my stomach. It's hard to tell from that photo but it's actually the same green as the trim (which looks way more fluorescent irl, oh well). Sn0wman is technically entirely outlined in green, which isn't really possible to re-create in real life, so I decided to topstitch the seams as a sort of stylistic nod to that. All the actual construction seams are done in black thread, though.

While the jacket is technically well made, it doesn't quite match the source pic you included. The accents on the source look closer to white/grey as opposed to the light blue you used, and the circle part at the top seems a bit large. You are also missing that curved seam going across the middle of the chest. Also, I would have made the sleeve cuffs longer and not used elastic in them or on the bottom of the jacket. And while it is hard to see from this pic, I am not sure you have any ripping in the collar.
Also, the source pic looks more like a zipped sweater than a jacket, so I would have gone with a sweater fleece or something similar.

Again, it is made well enough, but for accuracy sakes, it's a bit off.

Ok 99% of the details are done now so I did a test of everything minus the head, which I pretty much cant do unless I'm outside or in a convention center due to the height.

3 Barrel cannon sounds and motion all work fine though one barrel tends to stick occasionally. The fans in the chest are wired up and work great. Should keep me cool for 6+ hours or at least help. The sound system is working but I still need to add an extension for the mp3 jack so I can control it myself.

The lower legs need to be tightened up around my knee since it feels like the weight will make them start to slide down after awhile. The bicep armor was supposed to hang down from the shoulder over my arm but I dont like the way it looks or moves in that setup so I will probably have it directly attached to my arm with Velcro instead. Honestly if I have to drop them completely I dont think it hurts the overall look that much.

Forearms need to be adjusted so that they sit sides facing forward when at rest. They look better that way for posing and I dont have to worry about them bumping into the boosters constantly.

Mobility overall is surprisingly quite good. I can even sit quite comfortably if I get a chair high enough. The back side of a folding chair works too and I did that in the past with my GaoGaiGar.

Quesiton for all you seasoned cosplayers, how do you style a wig?

I read that you're supposed to use hair spray over gel, but do you guys have any products that you'd personally recommend?

>> No.7632484

>>7632476
Read wig tutorials. Malindachans are very good. Even if they aren't for your specific wig, you WILL learn the basics.
Also everyone uses got2b. Gel isn't really useful because wigs aren't real hair, people are more likely to use fabric glue, caulk and the like depending on what you want to do and how permenant it is

It really depends on what you're trying to do with the wig. I use hot water or a hairdryer + curlers for curls and got2b hairspray for spikes. I've heard that fabric glue can be good for spikes as well, although I have not yet tried this. There have also been a few wigs where I have needed to glue hair on top of a base made out of craft foam or hard felt or something else. Pic related.

They look like a good size to me. Try them on with your wig, they'll look smaller. I made a pair of what I thought was perfectly-sized Chii ears, but when I put the wig on, they nearly disappeared entirely.

Nice pic, unfortunately I'm not at the level where I'm making my own wig yet. I bought one from ebay and it came slightly frazzled and the front bangs keep getting in my eye. I'm looking to just groom it a little, would you guys still recommend got2b for that?

Nope, I just cut out a billion half circles, sewed them together, and then sewed each one to the white layer of the dress. I seriously don't recommend it, it was tedious as hell and honestly it could look a lot better. Next time I imagine I'll make it a long strip instead.

>>7632942
The eyes are worbla. I made a couple different paperclay bases first that I could use to form the worbla over. The eyeball pieces in that picture have been painted with gesso and then sanded.

The black tube isn't really as bendy as I'd like it to be but I haven't really found anything better at the moment. I'm hoping to replace that for next time. Everything I've found that is more bendy kinks way too easily though, so I'm not really sure what else I can do.

Oh, and inside the gloves there are finger joints and stuff and I would like to make it moveable via strings but I'm not sure if that will work out properly (especially because I only have a few days left to finish this) so I may have to put wire in there for now and try to save that part for a later convention.

Also, this pic is what the rest of the arm pieces currently look like. I will probably add a it more gesso before I sand them.

Most of the pattern adjustment isn't really that important, you do a long line of half circles and turn the lining inside. Another option is you can interface and satin stitch where you want the scallops, then cut away the lower half, this is what I did on my saber costume because I didn't want to add more weight to the hem by facing and turning it.

I would not satin stitch and then cut, as you will often get a bit of a raw edge past where the stitching is, or you'll end up cutting the thread itself, and having loose raw edges that way as well.
Cutting it first, then a very tight overlocking would produce much cleaner results.

Actually cutting before satin stitching will pull your fabric wonky, especially if you have any curves or lines on the bias. You have to be careful cutting and you need a proper pair of small sewing shears to really get close and not cut your sewing. But most cosplayers I've noticed aren't willing to spend the money on high quality scissors made for different jobs.

Yes its a generic version of sintra that I get in bulk from a local industrial plastics supplier.

On its own the material is not very strong and can break pretty easily so not many if any mecha cosplayers use it to the extent I do. This is why I use it in combination with EVA and fiberglass. EVA is used for the high friction areas that need to be able to bend and move alot. I use the fiberglass to toughen up the larger more fragile sections.

Sorry if I ask too many questions.

Your GGG rocks too, prefer the Alt though I think. Not much in it though.

Sadly not in your area or would have paid you a visit. I live in the UK. :p

Going to have to hunt for a good supplier of either EVA or Sintra in my area which supplies the stuff in large sheets. I was going to buy the thicker stuff in small sheets, build a the basic parts/shapes from multiple sheets then cover it in a layer of thin (1-2mm) material to get a perfect finish. A4 sheets seem to work out cheaper per area but I don't want ,y build to look patchy so it seemed like good idea. You have any thoughts? Did you just use huge sheets throughout?

The platforms are just simple ones I made myself from wood. I did use metal plates on the sides to make sure they were strong though. The shoes are a cheap pair of black Velcro shoes that are just screwed into the platforms.

The thighs on my new builds attach to the waist rigging with backpack clasps in the front under the skirt armor. Before I sometimes used elastic Velcro straps to attach them to my thighs but that gets uncomfortable after a few hours.

I get my sheets in large 4x8 ft sheets though that's just because that the way the supplies carries them. I usually cut those down to more manageable pieces before I can really work with them. You can bond smaller pieces pretty seamlessly as long as you have another sheet behind the joint area to bond them and use some filler putty to smooth out any gap.

Man I feel super guilty not posting progress in quite some time. But here is my Giorno wig 98% done! Now all I gotta do is add the collar, the details on the front of the jacket, place the pockets, Add the lady bugs and studs, sew the gold bias around the bottom and my Giorno Giovanna will be 100% complete!

I am very excited to get this done ASAP, Anime Expo is in only a couple of days!

Hubby didn't want to cut his beard for AX, and decided he wanted to cosplay Joseph, so I had to do a goodwill run. I don't think it looks bad for basically a closet cosplay(Yeah I know, inaccuracies). Though I admit I wish he had a more accurate hat but he wants to use my grandpa's old fedora(though maybe I can try some of the local costume shops and see if they have an indie hat or something) I called my local magic and costume shop and they have the theatrical quality temp hair coloring, so at least we can grey up his hair, eyebrows, and beard.

Shadow of the colossus progress. It was my first time doing applique. I still have some ironing on seams yes as well as just over all pressing. Was just relieved to have so much crap done in one day. I still have alot of detailing yet but i wanted to get the base of this costume finished.

thanks! I finished it. This was before i put it together but i used a foam piece, drew out the design, and then cut out another foam board for an insert in the half of the cape. I used an X-acto knife to cut out the designs on the foam board i drew on and clamped that to the part of the cape i was painting on. I did this 4 times. I was tempted with applique but figured it'd be just as tedious to get all the details down. I didn't want to risk screwing up spaces of pieces etc since there are quite a few small areas you can't see. I'm done with painting it. Took a total of about 20 hours or so. Wasn't bad, just tedious.

I didnt do any dirt/weathering. The one sitting on the bottom left was just how it started which is right after i put the first layer of paint on after using my stencil. Right now it's how the one on the mannequin looks. Part of me feels horribly ashamed to even think of doing any damage to this piece. I know by all rights i should but it's..hard. I also just started putting on a trim around the edge of the cape. This is just the back of the cape since i started there and i moved it to the front so i could get a photo. Thank you for the compliment though! Apologies if i overload on pics at all. I'm actually really happy with the progress on the shirt too. Disappointed most people won't see the detail but i'll feel better in the end knowing that i did it. That's what counts.

This is just how the shirt looks now, cuffs of the sleeves are pinned on. Pardon its super wrinkly appearance. i've taken it on and off the mannequin alot. First time with applique as i mentioned before. I dont think it turned out horrible but definitely not spectacular. The v-neck gave me a hard time. It was a really difficult area. Straightened up as much as i could.

Hope this makes sense! I've been researching other methods and want to remake mine following this tutorial.

I whipped out the drywall spackling paste because I was having issues with a lot of difficult-to-sand little bumps in my paper mâché coat and it's working like magic so far.

I've used spackling paste to fix small patches in props and primed/painted without issues, but I'm a little worries about the whole prop being covered in it like this, especially because it's a big foot-level prop that's going to be dragged around.

Tldr; and suggestions for making a drywall-type exterior more durable without 6373663737x more work? Otherwise I guess I'll just prime and paint like normal and cross my fingers.

Awww terminal core, Thats awesome! Are you that one anon who was putting together a mamimi a while back?
And regarding your question, fiberglass resin would be a great way to strengthen that up. As long as you dont have any exposed surfaces made of something that it will melt (insulation foam mainly), put about two layers of resin on there and it will not only harden and support it, but also give you a really smooth plastic-like appearance that will probably help the look of your final paint job as well.

I honestly don't remember if I posted anything about Mamimi but it's something I've been working on as a background project for quite some time! Thanks so much for the fiberglass resin suggestion. I thought at first it wouldn't work for me because of costs, but apparently there's a gallon of the stuff in my garage that's been going to waste. Any suggestions for sanding it though? I hear that's rough.

Huh, mustve been someone else then. For the fiberglass, be sure to wear a respirator when you use it, that stuff is aweful for you. When it comes to sanding though, if you apply it right and prepare your surface well, you actually shouldnt need to sand it. Make sure you get the surface as smooth as you can, and the resin will form an extremely smooth layer over it, and even round the corners to a degree. Its kind of difficult to explain, but try doing it on a test piece and you should see what im talking about.
