This show is my guilty pleasure. I LOVE watching my fellow cosplayer friends freak out on Facebook the next day over how not true it all is. They tried to get it taken off the air with petitions and shit. Even though absolutely everything they've shown happens at least once every con.

I normally consider myself a rational person, but I really want to get Jessica, Holly, and Chloe together in a bunker, and pilot a remotely controlled drone straight into it.

I love Wednesdays. My friends come over and we all get together and sit around the warm screen of the TV and watch the stream of HoC and just make fun of it so bad.
Oh Jesse. One word for you. What. What are you doing. Also, why. Why do you do the things you do. The rings where of course a hot mess, but sheesh. Not one little scratch of detail in them. Poured hot metal into a dixi cup and hoped for the best. *sigh*
Yaya makes my eyes roll once again. (read as always) Guess people who wear glasses are subhuman and not glamorous.
What else do I remember uhhh...puppet thing had way too small of a head and the girl didn't know know to keep her stupid arm straight and always had her elbow out so the head was never in the center of the body.
I'm sad Ashe girl's boyfriend didn't finish her bow in time for her to do that character. I love LoL so I was excited to see it. But then Ahri was ...MEEEH. And I think that sums it up. Which is funny, cause the best cosplay anyone had, I think was thee boyfriend of one of the girls who was a really good looking Twisted Fate from LoL. You could see his costume a little bit at the very end in their group hug.
And if anything, I walk away laughing the puppet girls' skills. After watching the Creature Shop show, where those people make life size, crazy good puppets in only 3 days, these girls, who are always 'blah blah we have a business', can't make a good looking mold of a head in like 2 weeks.

Casting things like aluminum actually requires a bit of knowledge and no how. Anything like steel, silver, gold, and copper/bronze is a pretty big deal however.

In Season 1 he made some really nice full on armor, then was like ''I don't win like this'' and suddenly started making all these costumes that are really subpar with his usual work. Indra tried to emulate her (pic related, even used the corset system), trying to go with the wire and peanut packing, just like her, with the same harness at first. When she discovered she couldn't (because that wire is weak as air), she just switched to that strange pvc skeleton.
I have to say I was glad inside, she doesn't do justice to the character nor the tails, and I'm not even a Lol fan. Also, there are other ways of doing that and make the tails stand up without so much weight. I did a nine-tailed character one month ago and it turned out well. It's not that difficult.

So the real HoC cast members seems to be Double Monocle Studios who makes a lot of the heroes costumes.

I like now how washing fabric and handing it to a commissioner is now considered a 'collaboration' and allowed to enter into contest. All my pre rage for next weeks episode where Holly, Chloe and Jessica win with costumes they mostly bought or commissioned so Bioware can get free marketing. It would be way to much of a 'coincidence' that they wear DA:I costumes during E3 week.

I see what your saying anon but I always look up other cosplayers to see how they constructed their garments and if I can learn from them. Why not?? The whole 'use a corset for supporting a back prop' has been around for a while. Ppl do it all the time for wings.

That said Indra's costume was underwhelming and I would have changes somethings if I was making the costume. Like putting boning in the sleeves so they stayed up. Or making a corset instead of just buying some china one. Or just turning the top itself into a boned bodice.

Her winning a award for the embroidery seems a bit silly too since its such a small part of the costume. Im not a fan of Holly and Jessica but I cant help but think if Indra won for such a small part of her outfit then why didnt they win for their head and hand sculpt which were a larger part of the costume and more impressive then doing some simple hand embroidery. Oh well they were all shitty judges award anyways.

I hate the fake drama and that it is fairly scripted, but I like the bright colors, real convention and contest footage, and one or two moments each episode where we get to see them squeeze into their costumes while half-naked. Yaya majorly turns me off in every way (large popped out boobs are unattractive). However I like Holly for her shyness and Riki's pretty sexy with her geekyness and modesty when she likely has the largest chest of them all.

Chloe probably got the job because of her boyfriend and is way too full of herself. Also, she manages to come across as unattractive even in her nude photos.

Also there's such a thing as having someone enter a a costume on a "model." I've won awards for costumes I made for my boyfriend that he wore on stage. I don't think any of the HoC people competed as a proxy for someone else's work but I'm sure we would be hearing more rage from the makers if there wasn't some sort of understanding.

I'm really surprised that for an ICG contest they didn't show the pre-judging portion (from Holly and Jessica's last live stream it definitely sounds like there was a pre-judging segment.) Because planning costuming ahead of time since you know you will have to leave any weekend without knowing more then 3 days notice is impossible! Even if the producers asked you not to make the garments so they can get construction shots you could still plan out patterns, gather materials, make a mock up etc and then when the cameras are on you can sparkle and do it on the actual fabric. Or am I the only cosplayer who budgets their time because they have a busy life.

Give the cosplayers a schedule ahead of time of secured cons for filming, let them plan out their costumes and time accordingly. You can still record the process of them doing it.
I know they originally wanted a pressure/time constraint angle on the show but it simply is not selling. I've watched the show with enough non cosplayers who still grasp that a couple of days is NOT enough time to prepare for a con when you're planning on entering a competition

Maybe if they spread it out and filmed the process more over time they'd have more fascinating stuff than 30-40 minutes of bitching with maybe 10 minutes of actual contest. It's embarrassing at this point to watch them compete against people who obviously spent time and drastically lose.

Originally she used her work as a stewardess to get reduced airfare when she was just an exhibitor but now that shes 'cosplay queen' statues she doesnt anymore. I really think the only reason they don't ever mention it in the show, is because they've set up making the costumes to be part of the drama. You know, I'm watching the previous episode before the new one airs and I understand why Jessica's Skeksis didn't win.
As much as I liked it initially, after seeing it again it was a bit of a clusterfuck. The costume itself was just fabric heaped onto a frame, and I didn't really know where to look.
While the sculpting was REALLY good, you could very very clearly see Jessica's arm and where it bent at the elbow to maneuver the head.
It would've been exponentially better if they'd had time to make specific garments as opposed to just laying fabric on the backpack/frame.

^ basically my face. But I had a long talk with Jessica and Chloe about this the day of filming (and side note, didn't know I was going to be on camera, and holy fuck my hair looked awful). I competed way back in the way back (that's 2001-2011 for the kids in the audience) and I've judged AX and a few other large contests, and no way in hell would I allow a commissioned costume to win a craftsmanship award or BiS. However, if the rest of the group made the majority of their own outfits then I'd consider the group for a performance award.

What used to kill me were the people who'd lie about competing in a commissioned outfit, so as long as the competitor is 100% open about it then it's up to the judges to DQ them or not. So, that said, it was nice that the producer's allowed that info to air. Probably to create fan drama on the forums, but still, refreshingly transparent.
