So fucked in terms of money for A-Kon. Hoping my fiance and friends will be benevolent in how quickly they need payment for my share of our room. I start my job tomorrow, I'm only going to have one paycheck before the con, which is going to my badge and food if I have anything to say about it. Fiance and I have had to change costumes, no more Kuragehime, alas. All the stuff for Kuranosuke didn't come in, so instead we will be Julia and Ed from Cowboy Bebop. I would make a Spike costume if I had enough time, so we could be characters that actually interact with each other, but I don't have a wig. I haven't worn my Ed costume in years, it's going to be a real trip.

If the singing contest is anything like previous years, you'll have to singing in a song from an anime that's almost completely in Japanese. No Vocaloid for whatever reason (was there an "incident" or something?).

>> No.7566311

>>7566264

Actually had to reread the rules to make sure they didn't change.

Looks like vocaloid just isn't allowed in auditions actually. And it looks like you have to pick a song that's like a certain percentage in "another language other then English" so songs from Elfen Leid would work according to the rules.

Also it says you can sing in English for auditions, so there's that. But I think all rounds songs have to be related to Japan so no kpop it seems.

This.
The theme of the t-shirt design contest this year was originally just "25 years!", but after they realized having the exact same theme as their 20 year milestone generated really similar entries, they changed it a week before the deadline to "25 Years - Reflecting on the Past and Looking to the Future!", and FalseDelusion did her best to pay homage to the character in year 1's shirt (pic related).
A-Kon has never chosen a shirt with a character with proper kitsuke, it's embarrassing as hell. They'd much rather have gaping collars, cleavage, visible hourglass figures, and half-corsets in lieu of obi than give the impression they give a shit about accuracy.

If you don't like those things that are happening your welcome to do the usual /cgl/ meet up which is stand in a circle for 5 mins then walk away and talk about how disgusting trips are.

which will happen either way

I'll set up a groupme in a few days after I talk to some people to who are coming from out of town, out of state, and out of country. Then I'll finalize some plans.

if you don't know what groupme is it's just like mass texting with out people having your number. You can do it through an App or SMS. I use it a lot for /k/ meet ups and always works well.

Weird question, but does anyone know if we're allowed to carry backpacks into the dealers' room? I'm probably going to use a backpack as my main con bag this year instead of a purse, but I don't want to be stopped trying to go into the dealers' room.

My fiance always takes a full-size backpack to cons to carry his tablet, water, a small first aid kit, etc, as well as small purchases we make. He's never been stopped for it, but he also always wears it with both straps on his shoulders and doesn't carry it in a suspicious way (as in, holding it open and in front of you while you walk in front of a booth).

Sorry if this has already been asked, but how heavy will the badge-policing be this year? A friend and I are probably going to drop by for a day just to walk around and neither of us are too interested in the dealer's hall or artist alley. I've always walked around without a badge for the past three or four A-kons I've been to, and I hope to do the same thing again this year.

>> No.7575946

>>7575591
Artist Alley and Dealer's Room are both badge-only areas this year. AA used to be an open space, but it has its own room now. Panels are badge only. I don't believe the swap meet needs badges, though, so you can get into that. Walking around the hotel is fine without a badge. I've never been to the gaming areas of A-Kon, so I can't say much about that. If you're planning to go to Doll A-Kon, that will require a badge as well. The "big" events like the cosplay show and raves obviously require badges, but that's a given.

tl;dr You can take photos of people walking around, but not much else.

Not sure if posted already, but there's going to be a cosplay break room this year. I figure /cgl/ would like this information, considering many of us are staying at overflow hotels.

Absolutely no photography will be allowed in this room, so it will be a safe space to relax. This will be my first con and I'm still unsure about the whole "anime convention" thing. I don't really LIKE anime (grew up watching your popular animes shown after school i.e. DBZ, Gundam Wing, etc) but my gf is a huge fan and got me interested in Attack on Titan. What can I expect at A-kon in particular? Is it going to be a total nerd fest? It seems scary, but honestly with stage lighting you can barely see the audience when you walk down the stage.

If you're a walkon it goes by in a flash. Just remember to take your time and pause for pictures. Take a little extra time when you pause as it will feel longer than it actually is. So many cosplayers just rush through so the audience can't see you long enough and photographers can't get awesome pics of you.

Just relax and remember its your time to shine and be awesome.

>> No.7584753

I don't know if this has been mentioned yet but if you are staying at the hilton bring everything you would think the hotel should provide because they wont.

Things you will want to bring:
Iron
Blow Dryer
Towels (takes years for them to get you towels)
Some rooms didn't even have ironing boards but that is hard to bring
bring your own pillow too, your rooms will suck.
I don't know if just this Hilton is awful or they just fuck it up extra hard for the con.
Our bed sheets last year had throw up on them as soon as we got the room. As in we get to the hotel and before we even set our shit down we have to talk to a manager about how fucking awful the hotel room was.
Also
Some plans for the meet up are finally starting to finalize now that there is a schedule out.

>try to eat something an hour or two before the show. Go for something like a protein bar or smoothie. Something that won't fill you up too much but give you energy. If you are like me nerves make you nauseous but try to eat anyway

> plan your performance in advance and practice.

> when you pose on stage, count to 3 slowly in your head. It makes sure you pause long enough for everyone to see your costume. It will feel like it goes by so quickly so slow down and move deliberately.

Fairfield, like most decent hotels except the Hilton which perhaps is less decent and more survivable, will include irons and ironing boards. Most hotel irons are older, though, so if you have a nicer iron, bring that and be nice to your clothes.

The reason this stuff was taken away last year had to do with the hotel hearing horror stories about Homestucks trashing hotel rooms, ruining towels and blowing out blow dryers trying to dry their body paint. Basically, thank 14 year old with no self control for why you can't have nice things.

A-Kon had no idea this was happening as only part of the hotel had this issue. However, they have talked to the hotel for this year and it shouldn't be an issue from what I understand.

It's a little weird, but I think they posted an explanation on the Tumblr page.

Personally I'm happy it's on Thursday. I won't have to try and rush to change from cosplay into a ballgown and attempt to make it back down fighting the elevator lines. There are events I want to actually see on Friday and Saturday night so having it on a completely different day is convenient for me at least. Plus it gives me something to do on Thursday night with friends.

I'm still super new to the whole anime convention thing, but why do I get the vibe that everyone is super serious about going to a convention? Like people are cramming tons of people into rooms, bringing their own food versus trying out local restaurants, drama with people snapping your photos; what gives? Why so serious?

>are people going to be super elitist there because I'm NOT that into anime? Will people make fun of my attempt at cosplaying?

uh

there are no local restaurants within walking distance other than a constantly packed denny's afaik

there are food trucks and the hotel had set up a food court but that's a little pricey and always busy so as far as food goes, its just a lot more about convenience and price

honestly it sounds less like everyone else is being too serious and more like you aren't planning enough

>> No.7586440

>>7586378
It's not really "serious" as much as...
The room and food thing = people are broke/want to save money, some cons' hotels sell out so quickly it can be impossible to find a room, etc. Food because people might not want to eat fast food for every meal, it's expensive, usually have to wait or travel to eat (if you're stuck in panels or at a booth you can't just leave)...

Yeah there's gonna be cliques, but try to have fun with it.

Anon, the anatole is in the market center area of Dallas. You don't walk in that area, it's not like it's downtown. If you want to go anywhere you will have to drive and then you give up parking.

I agree that you shouldn't cheap yourself out of the food that's there. Eat at Nammi truck at least once. If you are really that cheap eat half for lunch and save the other for dinner. It's big enough.

>> No.7586467

Do you even know how the parking situation is?
It's shitty. When it was by the train station, you could at least park at another station and play it like that.

I live in about thirty minutes from the venue and I'm probably not even going to go because it's going to be a huge hassle. At the old venue, I'd just take the train since I live next to a station. It was a lot of fun and a lot easier than worrying about high parking payments or getting a car towed.

I wasn't even considering parking. I'm actually staying at a hotel a ways a way (I think 10 minutes) and planned from the get-go to just take a taxi. That way:

a) I don't have to worry about driving in an unfamiliar city and paying high parking fees
b) I won't have to designate someone in my group to me a DD if need be.

Essentially, I'm just checking out this con, my first, to see what all the hubbub is (along with checking out Dallas since I'm not from there) and it seems to me, one not familiar with Otaku culture, that you guys take this way way too seriously, given all the other things one could be stressing over in the world. I mean aren't conventions inherently supposed to be lighthearted and purely for entertainment purposes?

But, that's just me.

I don't go for the con but the people and for something to do.
The set up is just too much of a hassle for me to even want to try anymore especially since a couple of my friends bailed.

If you're planning on using a taxi outside of just going to con and you want to experience Dallas, you're going to pay a lot. Most of the good stuff is 15-20 minutes away driving one way.
It's also all spread out in different areas with different cultures, some more underground than others like the hip hop scene isn't really easy to find unless you know people.

>> No.7586499

Ditto on the food allergies. I've recently developed a serious shellfish allergy, and much to my horror it involves anything that's been fried in the same oil used for shellfish, and also most Thai and Vietnamese food, because of the fish sauce and shrimp powder. I could cry. But yeah, I'm totally off topic.
Anyways, >>7586453
you sound like a massively sanctimonious asshole and I'll be glad to never know you better. A-Kon has moved to a silly location with sillier parking. You're not going to risk not getting your space back just so you can take in the "sights and sounds" of fucking Dallas, Texas. If this were Ikkicon or San Japan, you'd be right, but it's not. People plan on bringing food to this con for a reason, and it's because Dallas is not a walking city, and the con is not optimally located anymore for food or entertainment, outside of what is provided by the con. You're an outsider to this scene. Accept the fact that people who have been doing this for longer than you might actually know more than you.

The area is full of traffic and not pedestrian friendly by any means. Downtown Dallas honestly isn't even that pedestrian friendly, but the market district is something else.

>>7586378
A lot of us have gone through the take it easy route, and that just leads to disaster. Honestly, if it was any other city, I would totally agree with a lot of your points, but Dallas is one of those business-friendly, not tourist friendly cities.

Nammi hands down. Crazy Fish is also good. Butchers son and gandolfos are both fairly standard NY deili fare, but butchers son has some unique sliders and the must try curry tots. Cool haus is good if you need ice cream. Guinness chip is my favorite.

I am pretty sure all of them were there last year. I can't remember between akon and afest.

Regardless, I was gonna have like a swimsuit shoot on that day with some buds, so like I hope it is open. I also haven't been to A-kon in two years due to schedule conflicts, so I'm gonna have to get acquainted with the new hotel and all.

LOL that's cute, spoiler tags on ceeg. I'd maybe be down for meeting some of you gays. I haven't really been to a TX cgl meet since the (sorta??) SJ one, though I wish we had as rad ones as the ones at ALA/AX/Fanime.

So fucking indecisive. I got all the fabric for either a male Phoenix from Xmen (Closer to the movie Jean Grey outfit, or one of the newer Phoenix Force/Five style costumes) and for my TERA Castanic. Thanks to work and helping a friend with her Bombshell Batgirl, I have the 2 days off and a spare few hours after work each day this week until I go on Saturday & Sunday. I will only have time for one, and I have to wear it both days or go casual on Sunday. If I do my TERA Castanic, I won't have weapons but it'll be easy.. If I do my Phoenix, I have a feeling I'm going to cry over that Phoenix upper body. Fuck fuck fuck. I have to decide today. Either way I have to somehow get my black boots I let my friend borrow last year for a cosplay I made him last minute, and he can't find them.

Also, after 3 years of making cosplays for tons of people, this is actually my first time cosplaying myself and my first convention. Eeeek.

Sorry I seem so vague! I just know cgl hates yaoi so I wanted to be more chill about it, but I'm just glad to get some interest in the panel. This isn't your standard yaoi panel. I know A-kon has done Yaoi fest in the past which from what I understand was just showing yaoi anime. Which is cool, and I do love a good con bonding over porn. But I feel like most fujoshi have seen all of the anime and short of showing something for shock value (like Samurai Fantasy), simply watching yaoi doesn't do much for a panel at a con.

We have decided to talk about yaoi more in-depth/academically. There will be a segment about bara, as well. We're sandwiching these presentations between some yaoi games (there are prizes, too). So animated/2D 18+ hot men on display, yes.

If you want more info, I've included our group email. We are a local yaoi club, so if you live in DFW, we're always happy to add another fujoshi to the group.

Ehhhh, we had six people in our room last year and it was pretty cramped. I don't remember which room size we booked, but it had two queen beds and a couch (not a fold-out). We only had two cosplayers and one lolita with three guys who pack light, but still. I'd bring your own pillow and probably a blanket too, depending on your bedding situation. If you don't want to cram three people in a bed, I'd say let one have the couch and someone bring a small air mattress.
We had our own alcohol too, but like Hell I'm going to a nice restaurant like that and not having a cocktail with dinner lol.

Honestly I rather not have to park again and just pay for over priced con food, which as of last year really wasn't that bad. The Dennys was really packed, but it had good options and was not super expensive. The food the hotel offers is a little more. Look online at their menu prices, some items are not too bad, then again I am one of those people who doesn't mind paying 6 dollars for a sandwhich at star bucks and a coffee that costs even more. Honestly I get you, I saved up a bunch of money to spend at the con on things (the room is already paid for in advance has been for months) and I still do not wanna pay that much. Everyone enjoys holding on to their money, but in my own opinion, isn't it worth more to just eat at the hotel and enjoy the extra time that you would have spent driving and reparking at the con with friends instead. Talking with all the amazing people and the average ones at A-KON is why I like going. Looking forward to seeing everyone there in my purposely awful drag cosplay.

Careful if you've already booked the Parlor Atrium, guys. Your price may have jumped an incredible 200 dollars without being notified.

Just the masquerade and waiting in line. I was in the Thursday line for 3.5 hours, so I'm going to pray for everyone waiting in the Friday pre-reg.

Tina here! Almost to the hotel, paid my room in advance so no troubles! But is prereg that bad this year? First time prereg after last years four hours in line.

>> No.7602159

If you don't have anything you absolutely need to go to, last year I got in line around 5-6 and waited 30 minutes for pre reg on Friday. I figure Im either in line for 4+ hours or I can walk around and hang out with people until the line dies down.

I invite all of you to look at the dealers room/AA line.
