A lot of the photographers I know don't even want to touch their cameras right now because they shot so much stuff. If I didn't have to use mine for work I would be the same. With that in mind a lot of the photos you might see are by people who don't edit and/or don't really know what they are doing. Not necessarily a bad thing because it gives something to fill the void.

just watched the video on ACP. it was....okay? i don't know utapri, but the dancing seemed okay i guess. costumes looked too simple for a BiS group....clearly fanime needs to start making CLEAR distinctions between craftsmanship and performance awards. when ACP gets everything uploaded i'll have a look at some of the craftsmanship winners, but it REALLY seemed like fanime was begging to get ANYONE to enter the masq this year. you couldn't pay me enough to enter again though.

Pretty good Fanime in terms of just pure fun. The guests weren't so great though and I didn't like the panels being moved to Fairmont, made it more hectic to plan things, especially when the rooms didn't seem to be THAT much bigger.

My highlights of the actual con activities were dropping major spaghetti at a cosplayer working at the Anime Books booth doing Utena, Penguindrum, and Daiya from JoJo part 8, tons of Jolynes and some Foo Fighters around the con, TWO Punpun cosplayers and lots of Punpun stuff in the AA, having a Drive cosplayer threaten to knock my friend's teeth down his throat, seeing a Skull Knight with light up eyes, getting a Princess of the Crystal statue for 20 bucks, Fanimadlibs, and talking with the Cel dealer about Berserk and Hunter x Hunter. He was probably my favorite vendor since he had so much interesting shit and pretty good taste. Hope he's there next year for me to bother some more.

Also, having the best non-smoking room in the Hilton leading to us having our room placard ripped off the wall and stolen by somebody.

I'm really sad I missed Yume Nikki, Crest of the Stars, and Haibane Renmei cosplay I heard were around the con. Also that I missed a full Student Coucil group from Utena after I left today.

I don't think they made it private, but they can control who can and can't be on it if they're renting it out. And since they had the civic center across the street as well, they had to move to the park.

Either that or the con finally filed some form of restraining order against the protesters and forced them down the street.

>> No.7582906

>>7582896
I honestly don't understand why they come. Sometimes it seems like the protesters they send don't even really care or enjoy being around the silly costumes. One year I just saw one of them standing around quietly smiling and watching cosplayers walk by. I saw some people trying to just talk and be reasonable with them this year which is a welcome change from those just screaming at them or trying to be obnoxious. I guess they do often end up being a hilarious prop of sorts for people to take pictures and pose by.

They need to make a distinction between skit and costume awards. The Final Form Ryuko only got the Epic Cosplay Wig award because she and Nui had ridiculous wigs but the Nui didn't look that great. Ryuko's wig looked like the only well constructed part. Regardless there's no way they won for that skit.

>>7581410
The UtaPri group? Fuck yeah. I didn't' really get to see the costume up close but every one seemed legit except he pink one. Too much wrinkling in the gold trim. They actually knew how to dance and picked something with something hugely entertaining compared to the usual shlock. The people in the background though with the letters were totally unnecessary and was like something out of an elementary school play. They should have tried to maybe put EL wire in a sign and have someone behind it flipping switches for each letter cue.

I liked the Rap Battle group and appreciated the captions on the jumbo screens, but then I wasn't paying much attention to the cosplayers themselves.

The Satsuki's suit seemed great but that katana was fail. For Satsuki you need to have a long enough katana to make the pose work. You can't just modify something from the toy store.

>> No.7583070

I guess I like the Let it Go Skit more because it was Novice. The tear away costume was terrible (tearable?) and seemed to be slipping off her partway through. Also it was pretty easy to predict it was going to be a tear-away since you could see a couple blue sequin peeking through The "snowflakes" were just standing there during parts of the song where they could have at least been dancing or swaying around and their costumes were just white dresses. Also cutting up a super well known song like that was super jarring.

I thought I would hate the other Elsa skit but it turned out to be one of the funnier ones.

Sailor Moon Burlesque was solid but goddamn aren't there any family-friendly restrictions on what they can do? Also isn't Sailor Moon a fucking magical girl anime? Like I loved the HG and Mai Shiranui solos because those are both heavily sexualized characters so I guess I don't care as much that they're shaking their asses. When did we decide that our childhood icons needed to be re-imagined as sexually charged burlesque dancers? This is basically how I felt about the Nintendo burlesque last year.

Kite was one of the few that didn't look like it was going to fall apart on stage. Just wish he did a couple more cool poses.

Not exactly sure what Accelerator won for? The costume is parts, shirt and a wig and their skit was one of the most confusing.

Yasuo seemed solid though the wig color was pretty off. Out of the three I saw that weekend his armor seemed the best.

Overall a good year for the masq. The intermission entertainment was pretty good and seems like better placement than a preshow. The cringe-worthy skits were lower in number than normal. Though some of the best performances ended up in the beginning. Don't really like how walk-ons got mixed in. Or maybe keep them mixed in, but at least indicate that it will be a walk-on?

But please get rid of that emcee. He doesn't seem like he wants to keep there and wouldn't stop apologizing for last year. You're allowed to say they've been working hard to make improvements but move the fuck on.

waaaaaaay back in the day he used to run sailor JAMboree (a sera myu cosplay dance group). he makes costumes, so he does know construction. he's the head judge at fanime, and has been for quite a while i think.

the fact that you had to ask who wayne was says something....he's no longer relevant to the community. i don't understand why they didn't ask yaya to be a guest judge (since she was there and all)....i don't particularly like her attitude towards a lot of things, but she is a good construction. judge and actually inspects your work.

looks like there were 4 judges this year (last year there were only 2, one of whom never spoke/asked anything the entire time, and they were both really hands off IMO).....can any entrants comment on judging this year?

I didn't mean your as you directly, I was saying it like "Hey man, if that's what someone's gotta do then give it your all." And yeah I was at Fanime this weekend. I actually worked with the guy who ran that original fanime steampunk booth this year. I'm friends with his daughter and since she couldn't make it to help out this year, I volunteered. I'm normally a fanime guy, but I didn't have a big group to hang out with this year, so I figured I may as well earn some money to splurge on closing day. Clockwork seems pretty mellow and filled with plenty of nice people, and there was always a steady flow from the fanime crowd as well so it seems like it's not COMPLETELY unknown and worth checking out next year if you'd like.

The downside was there were some guys working on a documentary on conventions and our table was one of a few chosen for filming, which means my nervous habits will now be out there in the general public. Fuck.

This. It doesn't matter if you can't participate, it doesn't matter if you have to change a major portion of your performance or outfit. Don't walk away from an organized event without telling anyone because then the organizers have to figure out what the fuck to do about people who don't show up without warning.

as someone who runs events based off of sign ups, this is so fucking annoying when people don't show and they don't tell you in advance.

I was a contestant (I won best Journeyman) and even though it was my first year(so I don't remember the judges names), I found the judges to be decent - they asked good questions and listened to my explanations of how I made everything. They were even okay with me only having progress pictures on my phone due to the hotel printer running out of color ink. My only iffy thing was the girl judge didn't seem to be happy to be judgeing at all - it might have been because I showed up in the second half of the judging time nd she was tired but she spent most of her time on her phone and only the male judge seemed to be enthusiastic/care about what I was saying. oh the Satsuki was me~ The reason my sword was so short actually was I made the two broken Bakuzan swords not the full long one. I only brought the long one on stage because the short one got misplaced super last second back stage and I had to improvise with poses.
But yeah I totally agree I shouldn't have gone for the sword in front stance because the sword just isn't long enough.
I'm glad you liked my costume though! It's too bad the lighting on stage ended up drowning out my lights with the impromptu spotlight they gave me.

I hope you mentioned the reg thing in the feedback survey, though. It slipped my mind because I was literally first in line and didn't have to wait to sign in at all.

I don't blame you. Wayne has been doing this for so long he only looks out for his own interests anymore - newbies he can recruit for ACP, or any personal friends he can throw a prize towards to encourage them to do ACP. Katie has dealt with so much bullshit running the AX masquerade for years, no wonder she's bitter and jaded. Lindsay just runs ALA masquerade so she shouldn't be so jaded yet, but she only judged performance. Lauren I have no idea about, but judging by her onstage "shyness" maybe she's more concerned about her cute image than doing any judging work.

This year's masquerade wasn't a disaster like last year, but it wasn't good either. They must be hard up for entries since they allowed non-Asian stuff in (Frozen, LoL, Harley Quinn). Wayne even announced some prizes have money (although no info on how much or where the winners can get it, lol). Fanime masquerade's heyday (good performances, competant judging) ended a few years ago. Now it's all last-minute lack of organization, lazy judging, and the MC even worse than the kung fu GoH who looks like a wizard.

I don't understand, why bother taking pictures if you're not going to post them? Some of us work really hard on our cosplay and we can't exactly take pictures of ourselves, so we depend on photographers to take good pictures and post them online so we can see how well we did at the con. That's just how it was for years, but recently I have been finding less and less pictures available after a con, and it's frustrating that I can't have a decent set of pictures of my hard work almost anywhere!

You should feel bad for hoarding those pictures for yourselves. You're ruining the cosplay community.

if you don't know any you can usually find the dedicated photographer types because we flock together in large groups. or we're carrying shitloads of gear (although some of us have begun gearing down on purpose because we've tired of it)

at the end of Fanime there was a dozen or two of us near the treeline hanging out and then we went and got food and hung out some more. we didn't start splitting til at least 5pm

now usually it's the photographers who ask cosplayers to shoot but I'm totally open to cosplayers approaching me and asking. hell, I even setup a blind shoot on /cgl/ of all places.

Fanime's hilariously filled with "pro" cosplay photographers. They're all using far more equipment than they need to and I can't imagine the poses are that interesting when the subjects are stuck in their portable studio against a wall.

Is it just because they're all engineers who can afford the camera and light setups?

I've done all my good shots by taking people elsewhere away from the con, and on the east coast I've only got minor competition from other photogs. Especially since in the Southeast they all seem to be creeps lol.

Fanime's actually great locationwise because there's a lot of options around. Some guys anchor their gear to the tree area and never move for the whole day and they are losing out. I usually go around between the various hotels, parks, church, and even down the river depending on if the cosplayer wants to walk. Even if you want to stay in the convention center you have some variety to work with. If you want pure volume then sticking to the walls is the smartest thing to do but I prefer lower volume with some different locations.

The tree area, convention center lobby, and outside front entrance are a decent gathering ground with which to find people to shoot and/or be shot by.

Now AX on the other hand sucks. Being stuck in the middle of metropolitan downtown in the heat does not make for good options. Even without the heat there isn't much to quickly walk to.

okay, so this was my second time at fanime, wearing some great looking costumes, albeit from older series and not AOT/dangan ronpa/KLK. and i barely got asked for any photos (last year i just chalked this phenomenon up to my being new to the norcal scene). i hang out in front of the con center by the photogs, i'm not super mean-looking or ugly or something....so what gives? this was the case saturday and sunday in several different costumes. am i doing something wrong? (note: i have cosplayed mostly on the east coast, where you don't just approach a photog and say "let's do a shoot"....they approach you)

It's the same here. They usually approach, especially if it's first contact. If you've worked with them before and you liked the results then yeah, cosplayer might contact first. I don't think being new or not really matters here. Personally I don't even know 99% of the people I ask for shoots and grade solely on a "do I like what I see?" basis but maybe I'm an outlier.

Thirding 'what costumes were you in'. Really obscure cosplay/older stuff often doesn't get noticed - a guy in a (cheap) Payday costume and a guy cosplaying Inferno Cop told me they had very little attention.

Also, same rule applies here.

Also, do people really go to Japantown to continue after the con? I overheard it, but it might just be overexaggeration.

well last year i was wearing a scarlet claw costume with a giant wig (hard not to notice...pic related). this year the notable costumes were kendappa-ou (sat) and a giant red gown on sunday from rose of versailles. went through this at the norcal spring gathering too (dressed as relena peacecraft then).

both years i've been approached by one guy who's really nice (forgetting his handle right now), but not many others. just want to make sure i'm not missing something or putting off bad vibes or something.

The best advice to give you is to be social with others, interact and make friends. It's getting to know people that's the hardest part but once you do, you'll pretty much start knowing the entire west coast.

Also, post a selfie of your Versailles cos cause I heard about it from a few friends but didn't get to see it myself.

the social bit has been hard, as i'm located in an area without many cosplayers (salinas/monterey area) and i travel a lot for work, but i'm slowly getting a few friends in the CA community.

pic isn't from fanime, but it's the RoV dress.

It definitely doesn't hurt. Stuff that people know and people like will get shot no matter what part of the world you're in. Stuff that they don't know may not. Good craftsmanship has its place but it can only make up so much if it isn't known.

For your particular situation you might be best off going on the offensive since waiting isn't doing you any good. Get to know some of the photographers, ask them at the next convention.

The trick is to sit down and get comfortable and take off your shoes. I was sitting in the hilton lobby trying to recover from heat with my shoes off in a not so popular old school RPG costume and had three people come up to me for photos.

Also it sounds like you're used to being the big fish in a little pond before you moved here. Most cosplayers arrange their photoshoots well before fanime, so it can be hard to get camera time if you're just hoping for it at the con. Network a bit, get your name out there, and show appreciation for the people that shoot you, then photographers will pay more attention to you.

>> No.7584637

>big fish in a little pond
lol yeah not so much...most people didn't know who i was back east outside of my group of friends, but i did have cosplay friends who were into photo stuff, so i knew i could get a few pics even if no one else took any.

looks like i have some work to do to get my name out there on the west coast...i've tried to follow a few of the photogs on FB, but it's less clear out here who the main players are in the con scene.

>> No.7584653

>>7584637
you just need a solid photographer and not so much a main player. you'll see a lot of the same photographers over and over at events out here. pop summit, fanime, cherry blossom festival, ax, sakuracon, ala.

Now I'm wondering if you want to do this for cosfame or figuring out which photogs aren't shitty creepers.
I'm hoping it's the latter since there's a shitton of photogs that are good/decent/not-shit and they go to every con. After a few events you'll start to recognize them.

>> No.7584661

this exactly. i have a real job that i love a lot and don't need/want cosfame or whatever. i only just made an FB page like 2 months ago to keep my costumes separate from my work life. i'm an oldfag, so i think the whole fame bit is overrated.

Don't worry too much and make friends with others. The NorCal gatherings would be your best bet since they're not a con and it's a nice time to relax. Friendships go both ways though, and you need to take an interest in what other people are cosplaying from.

>>7584664
I like this viewpoint quite a bit. I like it enough to almost disregard my rule of only shooting things I like since unpreparedness is one of my petpeeves.
Sadly, the photogs who do have a certain style or look that you might want are some of the most jaded because of either their backlog, want to start taking it easier, or just don't want to do much due to the shitty drama that arose from all the cosfame in recent years.

hey, thanks for the advice....i've kind of been floundering since i moved out here and the scene is so different from what i'm used to that it's been a little bit of a struggle to adjust. i wish i could do more cons/events out here, but so many are in the summer when i'm usually out of the country for work. i've pretty much cut back to attending fanime and dragoncon at this point. anyhow, thanks for all the help and i'll keep what everyone's said in mind.
