What kind of material would one use to make a stocking cosplay? I'm at a loss for what to use for the dress. And I DON'T want to use velvet. I need it to be light for a summer con. Thanks!

Oh lawdy. I can just imagine what I'd have to do to keep that afro in place. I've had a large afro, but eventually the weight of the hair pulls it down. Maybe if I tried thinning out my hair so that it wasn't so thick and them put it in an afro...

I am trying to make a latex question mask by pouring and layering liquid latex onto a reflective mirror mask. To get that no features look.

Well it's scared up pretty good, Nice and garish from my many mistakes but this is the first time I've worked with latex so I need a hand.

How should I go about applying the makeup on it to make it flesh colored, and how do I get it off the mask without ripping it to shreds?

For application of the prosthetic:
>Using a cotton swab, apply a small amount of the pros-aide to the center line of the face (brow, nose, chin), and allow to dry and become tacky.
>Center appliance to face and lightly press down the center of the appliance to attach it to face.
>Working outward apply pros-aid to the skin and attach the entire appliance, leaving the edges for last.
>Glue down the edges with pros-aid, making sure there are no wrinkles.
>Using a makeup sponge, seal the entire appliance with 1 or 2 thin coats of pros-aide (this helps the appliance take makeup), and feather the pros-aide out onto the face in a stippling pattern. (this helps to blend the appliance into the skin)
>Using a pallet knife, makeup sponge, cotton swab, etc. apply bondo to the edges of the appliance. Apply multiple thin layers, allowing each layer to dry before applying the next.

Applying the makeup:
>When dry, pros-aide and bondo remain tacky to the touch. A liberal powdering will remove the tack before you begin applying makeup.
>Apply a base coat of makeup to match your skin tone, and then start building up detail and colors on the entire face. (Even if the appliance will be a non-skin tone color, a base coat to match your skin means that additional layers of makeup should blend consistently on both the appliance and your skin, since both are working on the same foundation color)
>Stipple edges of prosthetic with contrasting colors to help make the transition from prosthetic to skin vanish.
>Latex will absorb conventional makeup, use rubber mask grease paint or invest in an airbrush compressor like I did and airbrush your makeup.

As for removing the piece without ripping it, my only advice would be to start at the edges and very carefully pull.

>My question
I finished my above elbow latex gloves yesterday, when putting them on I ripped a piece off with my nails towards the top. Does anyone know how to repair latex clothing pieces?

If you don't want it to look cheesy you'll need to invest in a high quality beard prosthetic and a lace front wig. I go to Cinema Secret for mine as they have a pretty decent facial hair selection, they're expensive though.

One idea I have would be to use play dough on a stick to fill in the digit, then a super glue and latex mixture. But that's me spitballing.

Thanks for the help on the question mask. Just went full retard and powderd the thing in baby powder....

I'm going to buy more liquid latex and another mask and do a mold. Hopefully the baby powder works to my advantage.

Thanks for the help on the application of this. And the makeup comes in handy too. Thanks

Sorry if I word this a little weird, I'm feeling under the weather and a little loopy. I'm working on Edea's valkyrie outfit, and I'm stuck on the boots. I've had a couple of ideas about what I should do for the armor where the polearms sit.

>Worbla
Use worbla and just paint it a matching color to my fabric, sandwiching the "ruffles" in between layers. (Are those even ruffles? Man, fuck me, I can't tell.)

>Stiff Interfacing
Stiff interfacing sandwiched between matching fabric. Would most likely have to use fishing line to keep this up, but everything will match. Actually, I'm thinking I'll probably have to use fishing line no matter what... We'll see.

>Worbla and Interfacing
Mostly interfacing, with worbla in support areas.

>Fosshape
I've looked up all I can on this material, and I'm not so sure it would be the best for this project, but if any of y'all have used it I'd love to hear opinions.

I'm probably overthinking all of this, honestly. Thanks guys.

So I've been toying with the idea of using a body suit for the underlay of an armor suit I'm working on. The legs/arms are scale mail.

I've seen zentai suits and the like being sold with a metallic scale fabric before - and I've seen the fabric for sale recently - but I can't find the premade suits anymore.

Anybody happen to have seen anything similar to the OP pic lately? Google is failing me and the only thing I've found is close to $200 - with the wrong colour being around $30.

I've found the exact fabric for sale so if I can't find a suit within the next couple of weeks I'll just have to commission a friend to help me sew one. (And spandex is a bitch.)

OT but I'm on my second play through for 100% completion (forgot the crystal set, deep) and I love almost all the job outfits. I'm really wanting to do a WM (with Holly's hair though) and a salve maker. Are you doing one of the lances/spears too? Good luck! I didn't even know about the damn growth egg either (that's how much I pay attention to stuff) so I had something like 4mill pg towards the end by accident and it took obviously a lot longer without the growth egg, but i enjoyed it a lot, i understand your sentiments. Found this on coscom

>"The plastic of the outer shell is clear sheet vinyl (PVC). The vinyl is to shape and heat-sealed together, then turned inside out to better hide the seams. You MIGHT be able to perform this heat sealing by using a flat-iron used to straighten hair, but I don't know if it generates enough heat. I don't know if there are any air-tight clear glues for vinyl.

The spheres appear to be painted styrofoam balls mounted with monofilament (fishing line). The fishing line is probably held in place by hot-glue.

It's too low-res to tell, but the staff looks to be wood turned on a lathe. You could use PVC with epoxy-clay, but it'll flex a bit more.

The center bit is a piece of acrylic (plexiglass) tube. You'd probably get this from a plastics supplier, like tap-plastics. You'll want to make sure the joint between the "bamboo" section and the plastic tube section is nice and strong. Make the joint such that the piece more or less holds together securely before you've even added any glue; then disassemble, glue, and reassemble.

You might want to make a tubular sleeve of sheet vinyl going through the center of the mallet part. That way the vinyl bit is one independent air-tight piece. Relying on a glued connection between the vinyl and the acrylic tube to be air tight is much riskier."

First time crossdressing, help ;_;

I got cosplay as someone with really spikey hair (think dbz, yugioh tier) using basic Got2B glue to hold it up. It does great during the con but days later it always gets in this weird stage of where it droops and looks ugly but still too stiff with product making it difficult for me to fix it. For this scarf I'm thinking I'm going to buy a knit scarf that is long/wide enough and has the correct looking width of the main stripes, then painting in the smaller red stripes with fabric paint. Since the stripes are so thin, I would think that the paint wouldn't be too much of a hassle for a knit fabric (that wouldn't be stretched much in the first place).

Is this the best way to tackle this? I toyed with knitting the whole thing, but eh.

Depending on how sensitive your skin is, you'll need shaving cream. If it's not sensitive, use a moisturizing soap, I like Dove's. Oh boy, I did this too. It's been 4 years and I still have black in my hair, so don't expect a quick fix.

Go to a professional hair dresser, tell them to not strip your hair but that you want to go back to your natural color. A good hair dresser will accomplish this by putting streaks of your natural color in over the black, so it will kind of blend as your hair grows out. The streaks will save your whole head from getting fried.

Yes your hair is going to look like shit for a few months. You have to be patient and let it grow back out, keep putting in streaks of your natural color every 6 weeks or so. I think I went to the hairdresser 4 or 5 times and had it done before I decided it looked decent enough to just let it grow out on its own.

Honestly, after a few months, people really liked my hair. Strangers would compliment me on it, asking how I did it. Weird stuff. Good luck.

If you're deadset on that outfit, I say stick with red. It's more recognizable, and someone like me who follows One Piece closely is gonna be like, what the fuck that's the wrong damn color

If you want a change of pace, I never see anyone do her Marineford outfit. Yeah it's not as iconic as her Amazon Lily outfit but I love that her jolly rodger is printed all over it and stuff.

Good luck! I'm sure you'll rock it no matter what you do!

If you're using the rollers with the vents in the plastic, the trick is to pin the rollers to the wig head through the little holes inside to keep them stuck on.

It shouldn't really poof out unless you brush it? You should loosely shake or comb with your fingers to separate curls. That's why you see Hermione Granger hair on girls - they have curls but they brush them out instead of trying to tame them.

>> No.7560108

>>7560067
The rollers I used had like bristles coming out of them and you stuck a pin through the middle? They didn't work at all, so I'm taking them back. I'll pick up a "regular" pair tomorrow probably.

The tutorial I used the first time (http://blog.epiccosplay.com/mermaid-waves-tutorial/)) said to brush the wig out after, so I did. Maybe the problem was that I braided every layer, so there was a lot of poof. But that does seem to be the effect they're going for in the tutorial now that I'm looking at it more closely.

Thanks for the advice! I'll keep trying.

Hey there! I'm doing this character and I was just wondering if anyone has had experience with this kind of thing with the the totally pleated dress look.

I was thinking of making the whole thing a circle skirt from where it starts under the fuku and then just start pleating it until it looks right. Is this a good way to go about it or is there a simpler solution out there?

from the picture, just the bottom looks curled in so you didn't have to braid it (braiding gives hair the more wavy look)

What I would've done was tease the underside until it was poofy then curl the bottoms with a hair dryer and a curling iron (not using the curling iron with it's heat) along with hair spray.

If your wig turning out too wavy from the braids, I would try straightening it out with a comb and hair dryer on the most top layer so the underside is still poofy but the top is straight, and then you can curl the bottoms

insulation foam (the pink panther stuff that comes in sheets) would probably work best because you can carve out the details and because it's so big. I have no idea why you'd use balsa wood or especially eva foam because it's so flimsy when the thing you're making is so big.

You could probably use the other sheet like stuff as an inner layer for the insulation foam to sit on to help it stay symmetrical like the sintra or you could also use foam board because they're stiff.

Would it be looked down upon to model a costume when you don't know much about the series?
A friend of mine really loves making props and armor but doesn't care much for actually cosplaying and wearing the things he makes. It's weird, I know, but he's the type that prefers just making things for others to use and wear. He asked me to model an armor set he wants to make of this character from LoL, but I'm not sure how well that would play out. Will people just give me shit for wearing a costume that I didn't even make or know much about?

I'm buying a scissor sword to get signed at AX. I plan on making my own, but I want a really nice pro-looking one that I can get signed by all the guests.

The GS Props swords are fiberglass finished with automotive paint. What's the best way to preserve a sharpie signature? I hear clearcoat melts sharpie, but I think it's just the propellant, so clearcoat decanted into an airbrush might work.

I think his collar is apart of his undershirt and the cold around the cape is just that, on the cape. it looks like it's golden then flattened out. So the collar would just be a shirt with a high collar. If you give me a few moments I can check my FE:A artbook and see if there's some production and concept sketched to help dissect the costume.

Ah! Okay my bad.

From the images it looks like his cape is lined with purple then the eyes painted/stitched or ironed on top of the it. But yeah it almost looks like it should be separate because of how weirdly it wraps around.

Maybe make both the gold and the lifted collar detachable with snaps perhaps? That way you can snap it in place once you wrap it around then unsnap it and take the cape off. Crazy FE people and their crazy outfits.

Use a stretch stitch (machine setting or zig zag for sewing machines but if you have access to a serger, that's even better) cut out a rectangle that is as wide as you thigh at its largest and as long as you want your stockings to be plus the length of your foot and then pin it to the size of your leg. Sorry about that anons, I fell asleep!

as for the cuffs, maybe card them in two parts then embed magnets in them that way when you clip them together, they're held secure with force. There might be a bit of a seam but it should be easily overlooked I think?

As for the cape, looking at it more I think it might be doable as one piece with interfacing in the top. It'll be such a weird shape that you can wrap around you but the pattern would be like a square with slight curved in middles. Like, fanned out to the edges of the bottom and top of the cape. (I'm so sorry I'm horrible at describing). Pic related, it looks like it's one piece with the golden pieces clipped on.

Depends on what's more important to you; accuracy or having a good time?

At the end of the day you can cosplay whoever you sodding well want regardless of your body type or features.
Personally I don't cosplay anybody I don't think I can pull off, but that's just me.

What kind of characters do you like? You ought to figure that out and go from there. It doesn't even have to be a specific character, you can just pick something from a series/franchise you enjoy if you want.

What you think about the way you look doesn't matter providing you're enjoying yourself and not bothering anybody.
If you like Jin, by all means cosplay him. If it's your first cosplay it'll be good practice for later costumes too.

Honestly guys are always going to have a much more difficult time cosplaying within the animu world due to the fact that like 90% of male characters are wide-eyed, effeminate bishies with gravity-defying hair.

In this case I really would just do what you want to do, but if not matching up to Jin physically bothers you then use that as a motivation to get fit. Either way con-goers certainly won't care about potential inaccuracies, usually they're just happy to meet people who share similar hobbies/fandoms.

I thought about the magnets as well but I'm not sure where to find them? At least ones that are strong enough to hold the two pieces together. Perhaps I should look online?
As for the cape, I agree that the cape looks like it's a one piece, though the pattern seems kinda wacky to me (I'm terrible at patterning). What would you suggest doing the gold part out of? I don't really like how it looks made out of fabric. Would it work making it a separate piece made out of something sturdier? I think I prefer to imagine it as some chest piece made out of gold or something.

Also, forgive the terrible image reference but couldn't find anything better to explain. Perhaps the cape could work like this bib, closing around the neck with a snap or something of sorts? Making a cape seems so hard all of a sudden.

Sup, anons.

I'm working on a Ragnarok cosplay, adn I need some help figuring out how to make these spikes on his back, AND attach them to the black zentai I'm using as a base.

Not a whole lot of cash, but I have until January to finish it. If I can't figure anything out I'll just go for the chibi version which has considerably smaller spikes.

This almost looks like it could be bashed together with random parts from an electronics store, then spray painted black.

Otherwise you could always try sculpting it out of foam (polystyrene, etc.) then coating it with plastic or something.

>>7559524
Honestly you could probably get away with using cardboard, coated and sanded of course. Otherwise there's a material called sintra that should give you a nice finish. It's a thinner plastic sheeting that's often used in mecha cosplays because it can be heat molded and doesn't require messy coatings.

so i feel like an idiot for asking this, but awhile ago i got the suggestion to use liquid sculpey/chalk combo to make glaze on a bundt cake made from expanding foam.
but looking into it now, you have to bake the sculpey for it to set and i need it to form to the foam to get the dripping look. i can't put foam in the oven and i can't bake the sculpey flat.
could i apply it to the piece and use a hairdryer/heatgun? is there some way to make it set without an oven? should i make a mold for it to bake on? please help

Alright, I need some help designing a Dio-Sakuya cosplay. Obviously the colors will be based around Sakuya's DIO-colored palette, but I'm planning on mixing the two outfits as well. Right now I'm thinking Dio's black undershirt and open jacket, but with Sakuya's short poofy sleeves and maid-style shoulder flare things instead of long sleeves. The bottom half will be Sakuya's skirt and sock things instead of Dio's pants. Might keep Dio's dangly belt, though?

And hair's probably going to be that very pale yellow that the palette swap has going on, with the iconic green-ribbon braids and maybe Dio's spiky hair rather than Sakuya's more downwards hair. Unsure whether to do hair bow or headband; right now I'm leaning headband.

Sound good?

I'm going to be wearing a mask like this under a hood, however I want to make the eye segments a lighter color to give off the glowing-eyes look like a black mage. I've never really tried editing a bought item, especially a mask. What would be the best way to go about it? Cut a circle and fabric glue on a different color of fabric? I'm a bit afraid that wouldn't even work and I would ruin the mask.

I have no experience with these sort of masks but I'm guessing it's at least a little see-through, have you considered using LEDs on the inside? You could buy those little finger rings off ebay, secure them inside, and let those glow through, this way it's not permanent if you don't like it.

Pretty soon I'm going to cosplay Aiden Pearce from Watch_Dogs. I found a good second hand trench coat at the thrift store and it's just perfect, except there's this fuzzy stuff lining the jacket that not only looks bad but makes the trench coat way too warm and heavy. I need to make the coat's inner lining bright orange to fit the cosplay, but It's impossible to just straight up tear out since it's attached to the cowhide.

1. Is there any way to remove this stuff (shaving it, sanding it, etc.)
2. If the above is impossible, is there any good looking way to dye this stuff orange/yellow?

I've searched for images from the manga but I haven't tried searching through it yet so that's a good idea. I'm just kind of a stickler for accuracy. If I can't get something 100% accurate or close to it I won't do it.

Also, anybody got any ideas as to whether what she's wearing is a two piece suit or a dress with a diamond cut into the stomach? I'm assuming she's wearing some kind of leotard underneath.

>> No.7571550

>>7571489
Keeping in mind I don't know the character beyond the references posted ITT, I'd say it looks like a dress. But I also think you should be careful about making it a cut-out diamond, since it looks like it ends right about the crotch area and irl might create some weird gaps, mostly because your thighs are 3-dimensional and the white skirt will be stretched across them but a black leotard underlayer wouldn't stretch across. So you might end up with just a crotch-window, depending on how far down the diamond goes. But if you've considered that/have a plan, then it's up to you.

Well I was considering that, given that it's white fabric and I don't want any black showing through, I might actually just sew a diamond piece shape of fabric underneath the cut-out in the white fabric so that it moves with the whole piece.
Guess I've got to decide whether it's a one piece or two piece first. Given how tight it appears in the official art I'm assuming one piece but idk, could just be a well tailored suit but I don't think that would translate well IRL.

Yeah, I would say a single dress with everything except the v-cut at the neck, with a black undershirt thing. Just not seein' it being a two-piecer, and a diamond completely cut out at the waist would be troublesome.

http://www.fleecefun.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/Fleece-Fun-Red-riding-Hood-Cape-b.pdf

I changed it a bit tho;
> cut between shortest and mid length
> decreased the hood, cuz it was floppy
> cut the missing darts after making a seam
> front piece on fold as well
> added the emblems and pointy ear things

It was fairly simple constriction and I made 4 of them. This year I am making another 3.

I'm trying to learn to sew with this Simplicity "Learn to Sew" pattern (2147). It's maybe the fourth article of clothing I'll have made, hopefully the first one not to look like crap.

The first thing it calls for as far as actual sewing is stay stitching the neckline, which I attempted with these unsavory results. If you can't tell, the fabric is not flat but kind of gathered unevenly, which is not intended. I thought the needle might be too dull so I changed it, but that didn't help. Would anyone be able to help me figure out what I'm doing wrong? I don't know if the fabric is too thin, or I need a different presser foot, or if its the tension..

Sorry for the crappy picture, the iPad is the only functional camera in the apt right now.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

>> No.7578138

>>7577817
Try lowering your thread tension or using a smaller needle. That fabric looks pretty thin, so a smaller needle is probably a good idea. When you're starting a new project with new fabric, it's often a good idea to take some extra fabric and sew on it to get the tension/needle stuff right before you sew on your pattern pieces. It's OK, you can unpick the staystitching and try again.
