General wig/hair piece/extensions thread!

I have a question. In a local store they had really natural looking clip-on bangs. I tried them on and they were just a TINY BIT shinier than my natural hair. But still shiny enough to be noticed. Does any of you recommend a brand/DIY tutorial on Clip on bangs?

Just looked it up, this is great! Thank you, kind anon. I've been hesitant to wear a wig in lolita because I hate that unnatural shiny look but don't want to buy a human hair wig. I could use some help. I got a Lockshop starlet as my first wig. I cannot succeed in getting the curls to look like the stock foto's. The description on Lockshop tells me to brush them to get the to look like that, which I did with a wig brush but the just start getting frizzy. I'm completely new to wigs, so I don't know what i'm doing wrong. Is there as specific way to brush them to get the curls to look like the photo? Or perhaps I'm using the wrong brush? I'm not doing anything weird as far as I know, like brushing it from the top or when it's wet.

Oh, I asked in the natural hair thread because I had not noticed this one!

Where can I get small ponytail clips? I don't mean short ones, I mean ones appropriate for half-twintails. All stores I look seem to only have big voluminous ponytails!

This thread pleases me. I have thin, straight hair and it often looks like I don't have that much of it (though my hair strand count is probably normal). I also have a very sparse left bang from an incident 10 years ago, and the hair never grew back fully in that spot. I've wanted to "enhance" my hair with extensions and hair pieces, since I dislike wearing full wigs. I've also wanted to experiment with colored extensions/hair pieces, any advice on doing this without looking tacky? I prefer subtlety to these things.

I just read that the fabric softener method would ruin hairpieces since they were more fragile than a full-wig
But I'll try. It was ok cheap but I just wanted to hear someone tell me that it's k to use the softener method

I'm planning a Lady Loki cosplay and I don't know what to do for the wig.
I have really long brown thick and wavy hair. The few wigs I tried to wear where a disaster, because I have too much hair to hide, the wig didn't stay in place, had a strange shape etc...
And I think the wig would be problematic with the helmet, what if it pull the wig and make it fall ?

Is it possible to turn a normal curled wig into a rhapsody like one? The one I ordered turned out to just be curled instead of what I wanted and I honestly don't have time to wait 2-4 weeks for a new one.

Also what type of face do rhapsody wigs look good on? Is there a type that it just looks horrible one? (Like heart-shape, oval-shape...)

I'm not sure if you're using a wig brush or your own brush. Wig brushes generally have the bristles further apart so they don't pull on the fibre (pulling on the plastic fibre is what kinks it, which in turn will destroy the fibre, which is what makes the wig look frizzy). The key to not brushing from the top is actually to make sure your bottom hair is all untangled, if you're leaving behind tangled hair when you brush, don't brush further up until you detangle the lower parts.

Curly wigs usually come with their curls all stuck together (to keep it neat), so to achieve the volume in your photo, you just need to seperate the hair in the curls. If you find it difficult to do it with a brush, use your fingers to gently break up each curl into seperate strands of hair.

For wearing wig in general:

Look up pincurls. They're a pain to do, especially if you have a lot of long hair, but they're certainly the flattest I've been able to get out of my hair (was very long and thick until I cut it recently).

You may also want to look into places that do L size wig caps rather than the generic taobao wigs, which are generally M/S size. It gives you more space to hide your hair, at least.

Specific to the character in your image:

It might be easier if you sew the headpiece to a ready-made wig, so that you only have one item on your head to balance and adjust. Alternatively, you could consider making the helmet piece as a sort of cap or headband, and then handsew wefts of hair on top of that (again, creating only one piece of item to attach to your head). Of course the downside is that you can't repurpose the hair for other characters without unpicking all the sewing.

You have to be really patient and start brushing from the bottom, and work to the top. Because how they're curled the bottom tends to get frizzy easier if you do it too fast (giving it a little trim in problem areas can work if you can't deal with it, but it's not needed per se). What kind of wig brush did you use? There are multiple ones hat are OK for use on wigs, the special wide toothed comb with rotating bristles, or a wig brush. I personally prefer to use a brush for this style. What you also can do to re define the curls a bit after brushing, is wrapping them around your finger.

I've seen a tutorial somewhere, where you make a bunch of small braids, and then heat them up by the hot water method so that when unbraided, they have a somewhat rhapsody look. I would be careful not to make the braids too small or else they'll just look frizzy.

So I'm working the renaissance festival this summer, but i have really short, purple hair. I decided to get Arda's Stevie wig, pic related (not mine, it's from the Arda tumblr)

Thing is, I've never had a really curly/wavy wig before and I'm horrified that this thing is going to get tangled to all hell. I'm also afraid that if i brush it out, it will get flat and lose the waves.

Any recommendations on how to care for this wig? How can i keep it from tangling really badly, how can I keep the waviness?

Don't leave em in too long - I saw in another thread that some cheaper wigs were destroyed after a shorter time in the fabric softener (because the erosion of the fibres is what mattifies it)

I think it has more to do with the softener reducing the grip of the wefting threads so the hair comes out, not that the hair /dissolves/. I have soaked Kanekalon (cheap wig fiber) in drain cleaner, naptha, and muriatic acid, shit is /resistant/.

Mega noob reporting in

Ordered a curly wig, wanted smaller curls. My hair does the exact style I want with pin curls, so will pinning the wig make the same curls? How do I set them? Will keeping them pinned long enough form the fibres, or should I dunk the whole wig in some hot water? Heat resistant.

Wigs are (generally) made of plastic, so if you want to dramatically change the way the fibers fall in a wig, you're going to want to use heat and/or hairspray. As might sound obvious, plastic will melt at high enough temperatures; you can take advantage of the heat-resistant properties of your particular wig and use a curling iron or maybe a blowdryer aimed at pinned-up curls. Just remember that heat resistant wigs are not heat PROOF wigs, so you'll still want to be careful; I'd stick with the lowest possible setting if I were you. It just means you're not stuck trying to pour hot water all over your wig and wait for it to dry out again. You might also consider setting the final curls with hairspray, but that decision might depend on how well the new curls come out.

TL;DR with a heat-resistant wig you should probably try low-setting heated tools, maybe also hairspray.

Any tips on how to style this for Asuka? It's an Epic Cosplay wig, and I'm pretty unhappy with the color. The poorly cut (but still long!) bangs made it kinda worse.

I'd like to give it some more body, curl the bangs to give them some 90's poof, and decide if I should sharpie dye it with some brown to tone down that orange color.

It depends on the wig, and the character's hairstyle style, but they generally have a small fit since they rely on their mannequins to style them.

I only bought two wigs from them and I had to return one because the wig was too small to fully cover my head. So my advice, pay a lot of attention to their stock photos and see where hairlines end on their mannequins and then compare it to yourself. I can't give much else overall since I only tried 2 wigs, just know that others might fit while others probably won't.

How long is your boyfriend's hair? Short hair is going to make keeping a wig cap in place a little harder, but in general:
Pin the wig cap in place with hair pins (the U shaped pins) and bobby pin the edges. Then use hair pins to pin the wig to the wig cap.

Next time, make sure you and he try on all pieces of the costume well in advance, so you can make necessary adjustments.

>> No.7573944

Like the other anon said, try using pins!!
If at all possible, try to weigh it in the front to keep it on somehow. I know alot of people wear wigs on their natural hairline but if he can pull it down a little to make it have some leverage and it doesn't look stupid, try that maybe? Good luck!!
>>7571928
Try straightening those bangs from an angle. I had a wig that arrived like that and it took me a little bit to get it the way I needed but it worked. Sharpie dying seems like your best bet. If you want to style the bangs, style them before you try cutting them. Hope you find something that works!

Depends on what you're going for. Lace fronts are generally worn for characters that have an exposed hairline. It has a natural looking edge, and the excess lace can be trimmed to your hairline. A normal wig won't look as good when pushed back.
