Got everything squared away for my rebel/punk/whatever Sailor Moon cosplay. I forgot my belt and did some super shit makeup that my friends are helping me out with, but besides that I'm feeling pretty ok with it.

I'm also super glad gluing my buns and spikes to my buzz worked out because I was hella worried it wasn't. I guess I'm pretty much ready for Fanime now since my only other to do on my list is fix up my Detroit Metal City cosplay.

Mine hardly qualifies as a work in progress as I literally just have the jacket so far. Although I've got ideas for everything besides the pants and straps squared away. Do you guys think riding breeches would be the best choice? Or just some slim fitting chinos or something similar? I lack the know how for constructing the strap system and the fact that each seller reuses the same stock photos gives me no idea what I'd actually be buying.

There is like an 8-part tutorial on youtube for the straps. I am using it now.

Just finished up my jacket Thursday. I think I will add just a little more topstitching around the arms and hem line. Then I'm gonna iron the shit out of it.

Waiting on my garrison patches to arrive now.

Man I have really neglected posting progress pics as of late. There are so many things I absolutely adore about this costume, and yet there is just a ton of shit that's just pissing me right the fuck off. I am surprised working with all this vinyl hasn't straight up killed my 20+ year old machine. There are a lot of things that are pretty fucked up, most of it being the stitch length just jumping sizes from one stitch to another, but I am planing on at least having it be wearable to Fanime, so being really anal about that sort of thing is something I can't really do at this point.

Progress pics are about 1-2 days old, I just haven't taken the more recent pics and put them on my PC.

Nonon. The skirt looks really long in this pic for some reason, but it's actually mid-thigh before hemming (right where I want the layer underneath to sit)

Still to do: hat, baton, boots, bib-collar thing/sleeves/underlayer, tack pleats to sit evenly, put snaps on the wrist cuffs, wait for the glue on the wig to dry before putting the last bits up. Happily I found the most crazy interfacing in the world for the hat so I think I can sew most of it rather than using foam.

your nonon is gorgeous! Do you mind if I ask how you've patterned out the dress? Are you doing a skirt and a top sewn together, or is it one piece?

Hmm. I know I'm being nitpicky, but what's going on with the seams around the hips? Are they not pressed adequately or is there something wrong with the fit that's making them sit strangely? The top part of the bodice fits you well, but the area between waist and hips needs to be adjusted. Great work so far, though!

Tl;dr no waist seam, princess line/a line with 8 panels. Details below

I used M6207 from mccall's since it already has the correct neckline and is designed to have gores and a lining which made drafting the bib/sleeves easy since the seam allowance for them is already in the pattern. I took in the waist to make it more fitted as most people forget that Nonon is pretty curvy on the bottom, it's not just a poofy skirt - I was going to wear my corset but making the waist that small would make it impossible to get the dress on since the zipper can only go down to where the pleats start. As it is I have to wiggle it over my shoulders, there is no way it'll fit over my hips.

I also have M6834 which has box pleats so stole the box pleat shape from there, they're all slightly flared as well. I'm lining it so I can have the frills round the hem without awkwardly attaching them at the hemline since they're very obviously separate in the anime and I didn't want to wear a petti & underskirt & the dress, plus it means I can have the bib attached at front and detached at the back. The bib is going to have a zip as well, down the back - I know some people have done hooks at the front instead but I think I'll mess up the stars if I try.

>> No.7562905

>>7562759
It's because I used the same pleat pattern in every seam, forgetting that the side panels are 3" wider at the hem. I also took the waist in which has caused all sorts of I don't want to press flat issues despite it lining up perfectly, but I think the main issue is the pleats. To make the pleats look even I've had to change where the material naturally wants to fold (and where I initially pressed it to sit), and haven't yet lined those changes up with the waist-hip seam properly, I just sort of steamed and pressed it from bottom up without much thought. I've done a bit of give and take with all the panels so that the amount of misalignment is roughly even, but it's most noticeable of course with the side front-centre front seam which required the most playing with. I'm also terrified to heat the gold stuff up too much as it goes bronze, but I'm going to need lots of heat since it's all interfaced and everything. What I really should've done is lined up my side panel skirt with the centre panel ones and chopped the excess off since I have more than enough flare.

Different brands of foam have different expansion ratios, you'll want one with a low ratio so that you get fewer bubbles. You can still use this if you cover it with masking tape and then a layer of something like paperclay, then sand the fuck out of it.

I didn't want to start a new thread for this, and I guess this thread is appropriate for it since it has to do with progress on a cosplay I'm doing.

I know this isn't an Anime or Vidya cosplay, but I'm going to be cosplaying Thoman Bangalter from Daft Punk at Anime Festival in Austin, Texas this August. I have the helmet and gloves picked out for order, but the only thing I can't seem to find is a leather jacket like the one in this picture.

Does anyone have any ideas on where I could get something like this?

It doesn't have to be exactly like it, but something similar in style.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Would they ever turn somebody away from the door if their suit were too big? I had something planned but it'd be like 8 feet wide and 7.5 feet tall.

>> No.7570061

>>7569652
If its a hotel con you are pretty much guaranteed some problems from staff because of stuff like your suit clogging a hallway or a crowd forming to take pictures of you. Doorways can be an issue but Ive managed to fit in an elevator wearing my entire GGG and that suit has a 7ft wingspan and 7 inch platform shoes. A big problem to worry about though is your stuff getting damaged by fellow congoers. My gundam had his feet damaged quite a few times because of people shoving to get by.

You'll have less issues at a con that is held at convention center but then there is still a good chance that you will get confined to the floor area. Don't expect to attend a ton of panels or anything.

My advice is to get a full time handler, and I dont mean a friend who can just be around every now and then. You need someone around the whole time your in the sucker to watch your back in case you bump into someone/something or god forbid fall and need help getting back up. If you have the option scout the location before the event. Plan a route and avoid areas where it looks like there are things that might trip you.

Sound advice. Thanks. I'll keep that in mind when I am picking out materials for creation. Sounds like I'll be restricted from most areas for the most part, but I wouldn't have to stay in my suit for the whole day. I'll make sure to create the biggest items from something that can take damage.

Thick foam sounds ideal. Is there a place I can get super thick sheets of foam from (like 1 or 2 feet thick)? Or is there another material that is worth looking at?

>> No.7570755

>>7570741
If you want to do your build from foam look up EVA foam. There are tons of tutorials all over for making armor with it. Its sold as floor matting for workshops and yoga mats so its pretty easy to find locally. Buy a small amount and play with it a bit before buying a ton and committing to that material for the build though. Make lots of cardboard or paper mockups before cutting and assembling your 'real' materials. Good luck :)

Zvezdaaaa. This was so underrated last season, though I guess I'm glad because I'd rather the Tumblr "fandoms" don't ruin everything.

I'd like to do Natasha as a "swimsuit" cosplay for Colossal one of these days. It's technically underwear and a labcoat, not a swimsuit, but I can't imagine myself wearing something so generic *and* revealing around the con floor and I wouldn't want to do Professor Um without actual moving handacles.

Yay, always love seeing more fallout stuff here! As far as EVA goes, you can try using a hair dryer to form it, but its going to be tough if you dont have a really powerful one. Are you using stabilizer (tear away fusible or water soluble) before top stitching on your trim? It looks slightly puckered and pulled where the trim is sewn on. Just a minor gripe, otherwise it looks great!
Since you're usually joining a thick fabric to something flimsy, it really helps keep the fabric lay straight/not buckle when sewing on trim.

Next week Im gona start buying materials for my dragoncon costume. This is my second cosplay and i learned a lot from my first armor suit so I should hopefully save a ton of time and money over last time. On my first cosplay I ended up spending double of what i should have just experimenting and such. That and the fact that I only need to LED and wire the sword instead of a whole suit of armor.

I did some foam reinforcement on some slush-cast pieces last year for dragoncon, I found that with Great Stuff foam you can just hold the can upside-down and sloooowly dispense foam and get an even and dense layer without too much air.

Hopefully you can see that in this photo-

Oh im no pro, i just seen some gauntlet making videos on youtube that used real rivets. And im making one of my own right now. But i cant find any thin sheet metal i could use where im at.

So i just made one out of paper, and now making a gauntlet out of thin foam for fun. Do tell me how hotglue will hold out. Other than that real gauntlets used rivets at spots to hold pieces together with the glove but still allow movement of parts.

Minimal progress... I was supposed to have this finished for MCM, but I think I'm too much of a perfectionist. I'm finally happyish with the goku stars but had to recut the bib after attaching them which has thrown off proportions again. Honestly I think for a first attempt it's good. My crit (for future projects)
- your collar looks like you haven't clipped/notched the seams properly and then been careless about the pressing, as well as topstitching unevenly.
- Did you use interfacing in the collar? If you did, I think you need a slightly heavier weight
- I'm not sure if the thread tension needs adjusting on your machine as well as some of the seams look puckered, especially on the sleeve and the tie.
-the pleats look alright but it's hard to tell unironed and without seeing the waistband.

Sorry I'm a horrible top stitcher, I'm still practicing and trying to make it even..

and I did press everything as I sewed, but I stopped once I started the waistband, and thus why its so wrinkly, plus I think the cotton I used for the skirt was too light? so it wrinkles far to easily, I'm hoping if I starch and press, and then iron before I wear it it will survive at least one day.. next time I will go with a heavier weight for the skirt, I didn't enjoy working with it at all..

Yes I interfaced the collar, but I didn't know what weight to use so I just had grabbed what was available at the time, but for my next one I'll go with heavier if that's the case then. I also used the same interfacing on the skirt for the waist band.. I wanted to interface the tie, but I thought it would be weird...

Is that what is causing the puckering? I'm using my incredibly old Singer 1812, no matter how I fiddle with my tension it doesn't seem to change it much and some times when I sew it just craps out, and then I try again and it sews fine ((trying to convince my BF to help me buy a new one for xmas this year -crossesfingers-))

but thank you for the crit, I didn't use a pattern I just kind of winged it too

Starting on this for real finally. Hoping I'll be able to get a full mockup/base finished tomorrow so I can focus on finding some good fabric for the embroidery. I really wanna use something like a nice, heavier silk taffeta since I won't need much yardage-wise and it seems a little dumb to do go through the trouble of doing embroidery in precious metal, but cheap out on the ground fabric.

I've never actually done goldwork before, so I am a little worried that I didn't order enough wire/thread. I might have to make some adjustments if I run out of material. Already guessing I'm gonna have to do something a little different for the belt and cuffs just because of the sheer length of the cording patterns. I figure the collar is the main focal point of the outfit, so putting more resources into that will be more worthwhile.

I wonder if I'll actually be able to finish in time for AX though...

I'd say applique is the way to go. You could try to embroider the edges or any other highly detailed part to make it look better as well.

Overall I am highly impressed! Dat zettai ryouiki.

The sunglasses part will do just fine for that, and you should build blanks cut outs out of poster board and card board to get the shaping you want and tack it on with a dab of glue until such time you got the look you want
then build of foam and bond with HOT glue

>actually I just finished my bulk
lol
dude you look like a fat kid you don't look strong at all. people have to stop listening to /fit/

when you're doing a hobbie like cosplay it's more aesthetic than functional, being able to lift 300 lbs doesn't mean you don't look like shit/fatty in your costume.

>> No.7598194

>>7598176

Actually people should still probably listen to /fit/ but start reading the whole articles and not just stop at the first sentence and think they know everything.

Bulk is fine and neccesary for aesthetics. The same was lifting 300 lbs means that you will have an easyer time getting the aesthetics as you apparently already have the muscles.

But after all that bulking if you dont cut the fat, and start dropping your body fat index you are gonna look chubby. And the people who are on /fit/ are going to the gym anyway. None of that muscle is really functional. Its functional for lifting weights. If you want functional muscle, start training a sport or working something intensive.

The best tip about aesthetics i heard was, if you want to look like someone, train like him. So if you want to look like an mma faggot, train mma. If you wanna be a bodybuilder, do that.

That anon tough, he is just pudgy.

Been quite a number of months since I posted anything here, but I've got some progress for yah. The Helmet for Imperius (Diablo 3) got its first coat of GLORIOUS GOLD. Its about to go down to the shop for some serious weathering, but its finally getting near completion.

I'm practicing some Japanese embroidery ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vfXlRgHmG7E / https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IOzFJ4gCdaM / https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsrhSOUPs-Y ) so I don't screw Hoozuki's kimono. I don't know if might be cheaper to try other style of embroidery or send the design to an embroidery store instead.

>> No.7599869

Doesn't look too bad. I think you could probably fix the sloppier areas by just going over them again a little.

That said, I'm not sure embroidery's the best technique for the emblem on the back of Hozuki's kimono. It seems more like something that would be painted/dyed to me.

Well, if you're dead set on embroidery, I think you need to take more care with your lines and consider the direction of the threads more––horizontal on the orange bits does cover a shorter distance, but I think it'd be more natural to follow the direction of the petals. You might want to look into some 'needle painting' techniques too and see if you can work in a bit of a gradient to give it a little more depth?

So after a long hiatus on my Giorno cosplay (Cram stress before fanime really took a number on me) I am finally back at it! I am almost done with the wig. All that I need to do now is sew in the wefts for the rings, shape those, spray and hope to god it turns out good!

I do like the way that it is turning out, so far. Especially since it is the first wig that I have ever styled. After I finish the wig I am going to finish the jacket and then I am totally done with Giorno Giovanna!!

I can't say it looks bad. It's pretty cute. I just hope the length of the braid works for your face/neck/head, cause damn I don't think Giorno when I see that, I think Elsa. (Maybe its because the donuts aren't in place yet either...)

Haha I feel that too. The length of the braid is actually just a place holder. I am going to cut the mullet down to size once I have everything assembled and I can see how everything looks on my head. Because there isn't anything on the front the wig definitely does look very Elsa. Because I am a total noob to wig styling, I thought that would be the closest thing to Giorno's hair style that would have video tutorials, and I was right. However it is really shaping up with the test donuts I have on. This costume has been the most fun I have ever had making anything, and it's a great learning experience to boot.

I'll be sure to keep posting progress pics until I am done.

I've made like 3 iterations of Haruhi Suzumiya's seifuku and had similar problems. The biggest issue? Using lightweight quilting cotton. For those seifuku, Kona cotton isn't going to cut it. It wrinkles like crazy and loves to pucker.

I'm midway through my fourth (and hopefully final) try and I'm using a poly gabardine- the pleats look pretty crisp so far and I haven't had any puckering issues. It also feels significantly more substantial.

The puckering I see on yours looks like it could also be caused by the fabric being fed unevenly into the machine. Here's a helpful guide on how to address it: http://www.amefird.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/Minimizing-Seam-Puckering-2-5-10.pdf

Your patterning looks pretty good though! Good luck.

Stones came in today. The grey cat's eye looks pretty much perfect. The goldwork wires and threads won't be in until next week, but I have to get the padding laid down first anyway.

Dupioni wasn't my first choice for the ground fabric, but I think it looks pretty nice. The camera doesn't quite pick up how shiny and metallic it looks irl though. I wasn't sure about the texture at first, but I actually think it's going to look better than a smooth silk now (even nice stuff can read really cheap sometimes and the dupioni is taking the couching threads for the padding really nicely).
