It's the drinking and reckless behavior and whatever. I don't like the idea of being crammed in a room with noisy people doing things I'm not interested in.
The con itself is better because there's more space and while there's still drunk people and noisy people, there's way more people who aren't which balances everything out.
It's kind of rare here, but I'm the kind of person who goes to the convention just for the convention and not so much to socialize outside of "Excuse me! May I take your picture?"

I mostly like kickbacks, with chill people and maybe chill music. I've been to a couple AX parties in the past and sometimes people are too loud and we end up getting kicked out from the hotel. If your party isn't like that, can I come along? Maybe a friend or two if they aren't rowdy as well.

Sometimes it's like that. Hotels will sometimes have whole floors dedicated to housing the guests going to a convention, so you're all in the same place and not disturbing the normal guests (also called party blocks). When you're on one of these floors, you meet other congoers in a more chill, party-like environment than at the con, so you usually end up hanging out in someone's room for a hotel room party.

>>7541643
Being fairly blunt is fine if you're on a party block and it's like, "Hey, you're drunk, I'm drunk, let's party together~?" but if you're at a con, make friends first and then ask (maybe mentioning a group of friends who would also attend if you don't want to seem like you're hitting on them) if they would want to party later.

>>7541925
I feel you, anon; it can be hard to just swoop by at social events if you haven't personally been invited. However, at a con, everyone's usually pretty friendly and jovial since there's an easygoing atmosphere, so please don't worry too much about whether you'd be wanted at a party or not- I'm sure you would be!
>>7543056
THIS

Also: Keep hotel room parties fairly small, especially if you're on a non-party block floor or at a hotel where not many other con goers are staying since then it's easier to end up making people upset by being too loud or obnoxious into the late hours. Nothing kills a party like hotel security kicking everyone out~

Seriously, the best way to start a party is to have a network. Nobody's gonna want to go if they don't know there's gonna be cool people there. Booze is mandatory. Bring a sound system too so you don't have to blast shit out of your tinny laptop speakers.

False. Plenty of people already know others at a con. Either they go with friends or have made friends with others that go there year after year. Once you have a group of con friends you can easily get them to come to your party and get them to invite their con friends.

Another one was after I met a girl at a rave. Long story, but she ended up being batshit insane.

You are being purposely obtuse. They're all social interaction, sure, but not necessarily in the realm of making friends or anything like that. A person doing the things I listed can gain things they personally desire out of each of these actions. You have to talk to a dealer in order to make a purchase, no you do not have to speak to anyone in a panel you fuckwit, you can meet a guest to obtain an autograph, you can take a photo of a cosplayer to appreciate privately. A convention for some people does not have to be a social experience in any way aside from the briefest interactions, which doesn't really entail making friends and going to parties.

Ah! But you can obtain all of those things while sitting at home. No social interaction required.
> Talk to a dealer to make a purchase.
No need for conversation on Ebay!
> Getting an autograph
No need for social interaction when you purchase an autographed item! Alternately you can send your item to that person having asked them to autograph it and receive it back, autographed.
> Photography
There are plenty of photographs of people online. Need a specific cosplayer? Ask them to send you a photograph!

The point of a con is for social interaction between those interested in the subject at hand. I believe the point was made.

Enlighten me, then. If you're point is as >>7544520 says, then I agree that there are different levels of socialization. Just calling me "oblivious" doesn't win any argument. I'd counter, however, with saying that alcohol is not a necessary factor of a party. I've been to quite a few parties that didn't have alcohol or drugs or loud music.

The point I'm trying to make is that, simply if you're going to a convention, you're going there to socialize. You're going there because there are other people there that are interested in the same thing that you are, and you want to interact with them. I cannot for the life of me see why you're disagreeing with that point. I compare conventions and parties because both are centered around the point of gatherings of like - minded people to socially interact.

I don't know if this is really a horror story but I was at AN last year and brought my cousin, who's not really into anime, more of a gamer. Anyways we left this room party and we didn't realize he stayed behind. Apparently 5 minutes later it turned into some weird orgy and he nope'd the fuck out.

I guess my advise for a successful party is actually have games going on, drinking games or cards and not let it become a creepy orgy.

>> No.7544814

>Don't invite random people into your room.
You're bound to get shit stolen (even if you have your valuables locked up they might walk out with your booze or you're likely to get people with zero respect for their surroundings and you may have to pay damages for something someone who isn't even part of your room broke. Network. Make friends at the con and invite them, have friends invite their friends. At least have some sort of connection to the people you bring in.

>Don't try to micro-manage drunk people
Let everyone do their own thing. You can have games like CAH or vidya games available for people to play but if you try to say "Okay now we're all playing this game" you're likely to get people who are either too busy or drunk to care. I've learned people don't like organization at parties, they like freedom and fun.

>Don't be a pushover
If you keep getting noise complaints and someone is too drunk to quiet the fuck down, have the balls to confront them and ask them to leave. Same thing if someone is being destructive or making others uncomfortable. Don't be afraid to get hotel security if they refuse to leave. Hotel security knows parties happen and appreciates people who are actually responsible enough to alert them when there's a risk to the hotel or other people.

>For the love of god don't let minors in
My room doesn't allow anyone under 20, but we'll make rare exceptions for 18-19 depending on how well we know the person. You aren't likely to get busted for a party unless you're blatantly ignoring noise complaints or harassing other people. However, if you let random kids into your room, you don't know if they're there with their parents or not. You don't have to card everyone who walks in the door if you don't want to, but if someone looks and acts like a kid, it might be a good idea to ask. This can be avoided by sticking to tip #1 though.

I'll also warn you, sometimes naked people just... happen.

>>7544818
My point is simply that cons are exactly like parties, but on a larger scale. The point of the event is to socialize. So to say that you're going to a con not to socialize makes no sense. If you like cons, then you like parties. The presence of alcohol has no effect on whether or not a party is a party.

Use the bathroom as the bar.

Be prepared to have a towel on hand when someone spills something.

Avoid inviting in randoms whenever possible. Are they bringing more alcohol? Can your friends vouch for them?? Or is there something about them that you like??? (If your gut says yes when you normally say no, go with it)

Play music from the inside of your room, and do a sound check where it's just loud enough that you can't hear it from the hallway. During the party, if people talk louder that you can't hear the music, you know people will be hearing you out in the hall.

If hotel staff say to turn it down, kick the party out but tell your closest friends to come back in 20 minutes. Often times when it settles down to a room of 8-10 modestly chill people not making a scene, they don't care.

If you have a prescription for green things, stuff a towel underneath the door and run the hot shower. The steam will get rid of the smell, leave the shower running and the door closed for about 5 minutes after use to let the steam do its work.

When in doubt, just grab a fuckton of vodka and mixers if you really don't know.

If someone is about to throw up, HELP THEM.

If you found someone that is into you, don't try to be sneaky and make out with them somewhere in an unattended part of the party. People will still see you.

Cards against humanity totally works, but it gets loud as fuck FAST. Make sure you are in a party floor or somewhere where they don't care.

Remember, if you are 21, it is LEGAL to leave your room and drink inside the hotel, even in the lobby. If your room party is shut down, pour the last drinks and take the party out to the lobby.

The scene is much younger than the US one, we don't have as many people with tons of experience. About the only "professional" cosplayer/propmaker I know is Kamui. Also, the age average at conventions is lower and some materials/ tools like laser cutters are more expensive and harder to acquire.
Most cons are in convention centers that have no hotels directly attached (except maybe Connichi), that's why the crowd disperses when the main events are over. Again, alcohol is banned everywhere because there are so many damn children around.

Generally I can dig a room party, but I never go alone...or shouldn't. Ladies tend to get overly friendly and at some point I just don't care anymore, I leave all my cares and fucks on the dance floor.

As someone who's watched his beloved ACen blossom from little intimate gathering with amazing guests to 25,000+ person clusterfuck with more DJs than VAs, yeeeahhh, no.

It's not private room parties, dingus. Every con has a bunch of room parties, even the little cons. It's big raves and a slow blurring of con focus. The more fandoms you let in, the more resources you waste on dances, the less time you have to put in work on panels and guests, the worse off your reputation becomes, the less interested the coolest guests get.

It's a party game based on the game Mafia. You start with an odd number of players, at least 7. I've heard of games going as high as 21. One person is a moderator, two people are werewolves, one person is a seer, the rest are villagers (although more roles, like doctor/drunk/hunter etc, can be added with larger numbers of players).

At "night" everyone but the werewolves close their eyes; they pick someone to kill; then they close their eyes and the seer tries to point out the werewolf, the moderator silently indicating yes or no.

Then "day" starts, everyone opens their eyes, the Moderator reveals who is dead, and the villagers try to figure out who the werewolf is. Lots of lying, backstabbing, earnest pleading, and argument ensues, until everyone takes a vote and somebody is hanged. If it's a werewolf, they're revealed as a werewolf. The cycle continues until both werewolves or all the villagers are dead.

You can get a special Werewolf card deck (I like the one at http://maxistentialism.com/werewolf/)) or just use a deck of playing cards.

I have nearly ended friendships over this game.

I've had pretty good success meeting people and making friends at cons, but not so much getting into actual room parties. Are pretty much all of them 21+?

21+ or close enough, yeah. Part of the whole point is to be able to drink. If you don't look like a baby you're more likely to find somebody who'll assume you're legal. Some check ID, some don't, just be cool either way and don't try to sneak in or be a fuckup if you get in.

>>can the hosts get in trouble for providing alcohol to minors?

YES. Can and will. They will also lose the hotel room, and likely face charges and a fine. I'm amazed more parties don't check ID given how shitty this can get.

No, it doesn't matter whether the minors brought it or whether they're all stone sober drinking only tap water. If they're at a party with open bottles, they are having alcohol provided to them. It doesn't matter how big or how small the party is. If you want to drink with your 21+ friends, do it in a private room and don't leave to do stupid shit afterward.

when i make friends at a con i'm either playing a game in a public area or join someone playing a game in a public area. I think someone mentioned that earlier in the thread.

Just try to pick an 21+ looking group, they'll most likely be drinking at some point if they're not already.

I usually bring a bottle of my own stuff to the con so I can have a light buzz all day. it's easy enough to know when to and when not to bring it out to attract the right kind of attention when you're looking for other drinkers. someone's bound to ask you what's in the bottle. you could even offer to share if you're not a germophobe.

I think if we arent loud enough to be heard in the hall its at a reasonable noise level. Also, for most people, common courtesy is to knock on the door. Either way, the thing that I didn't like was the whole pulling rank. Th people with m told me that the particular hotel policy is to give at least two warnings before you get threatened with eviction. I know better than to play music. It was just the sound of people talking. No yelling or rowdiness.

Also, a not to everyone, do NOT play music at con parties, at least past 9 pm. There was an old trick where you told everyone that if they could not hear the music they had to quiet down, but this does not work. People will jus talk louder so they can be heard over the music. AX '12 went to a room party in the Westin that was mainly staff and friends of staff. The people rooming left of us were also going to AX, so we asked them if it was chill if we threw a lil kickback they were chill as fuck and joined in, since the rooms were connected by a door we just opened the door. My roomie had also brought his hookah and we just turned the hot water on and the smoke didn't seem so bad with the steam. Everything was cool until everyone got really fucked up and a couple of friends were singing boyz 2 men and then they were knocking so we told a couple of the people to hide next door then some cunt comes in and goes on about how she has to present the GoH then some dude who was high as fuck interrupted her and was like OH MAN I LOVE THAT GUY! and I started laughing and then was like AND YOU GUYS DONT EVEN OFFER A BEER, COME ON. My friend calmed her down and apologized, we turned the music down and just kept drinking. Some dude completely got fucked up trying to impress some chick and was like puking 8 shots later so my roomie was helping him aim his puke in the bathroom, I gave him some water so he could give it to the guy and I later found him pouring it on his face for the lulz haha. Oh man, he was still fucked the next day and couldn't make it to his shift that day, he was volunteering though so I'm guessing its not that bad.
Was a pretty chill ass party though.

Been in a long distance relationship with a guy for 2 years. I love him truly but once in a while when he gets a lot of work and goes out with his friends more we dont talk as much for a few weeks, and in the last bout of this I started casually talking to a guy in class and now its four months later and Im still talking to him.
The thing is, the guy Im dating is a bit of an asshole, hes always said so, and I've always known it but took it as "I can accept your asshole ways" which I always knew was wrong deep down but never wanted to confront it.
I dont want to end it because I dont want to be alone, I doubt anything with the one guy will work out, hes way out of my league.
