People who mark up their shitty uggo face Irwin Sailor Moon dolls up to $100+ because "it's Sailor Moon it's IMPOSSIBLE to find these sell for HUNDREDS on ebay"
Yeah such a great deal, that's why the same vendors have had the same dolls for the last 4 years.

Sometimes I find it amusing when vendors recognize your character though. When I first started cosplaying years ago, I went to a multi-genre con as Luffy and a vendor gave me a OP related snack for free for being the first one she saw (Luffy was her fav character). For the artbooks it's easy. Infinity and I'm pretty sure Materials aren't faked to my knowledge. So that Infinity book is real, just horrendously overpriced.
5th artbook isn't really faked, but there is a softcover version that is a cheaper Chinese version. The real Japanese Artbook V is a hardcover. There aren't hardcover fakes or other versions.
For books I-IV, they must be hardcover with Japanese text on the front and VERY IMPORTANT the first page of the book is made through see through rice paper. It HAS to have this or its a fake even if it looks awesome. You can kind of see the rice paper in the bottom right corner of this picture. It lays over the intro page nicely.

This is my dirty opinion on SM dolls:
If you're looking for just any SM doll and not one particular release, wait until they start pumping out new ones for the new show. Many of the 1990's dolls were shitty bootleg quality to start with, had poor likenesses, and the doll vinyl, hair fiber, and costumes are deteriorating on many. That's not true for all of them, but many. And even the well made ones will be in bad shape if they've been displayed in sunlight or under a store's fluorescent lighting for 10+ years. I threw together a sloppy compilation image.

It's hard to make that mistake (unless you're way too excited that you found it, ahem), but I did it when I spotted a 12 inch Cyborg Gai from GaoGaiGar. In the end I didn't give a shit because it was $15, still from the 90s, and still badass as fuck. But damn it was Korean. Not that anon but the zoo is kind of a less social experience, plus it's not based on a hobby that tends to connect people. Also what if the people you took pictures of like your pictures and enjoy that this picture was taken of them? I think it's nice to do but I also agree that people shouldn't be obligated to do it. But also the implication of spending a shitload on a camera is that they really enjoy taking pictures and it's a major hobby of theirs so they would probably post pictures they are proud of somewhere.

It's part of the reason I stopped going to Otakon. They had all those HUGE rooms on the top floor that they used for the 5 people viewing anime on a screen and would put their top guests/popular panels in some other smaller ballroom.

My other top pet peeve is going to a fan panel about a certain topic and it either is hosted by somebody with nearly no knowledge or they don't know what they're doing. One year I cosplayed Akita Neru and Graham Aker.

So many people asked for my photo as Neru. I lost count. One person asked for my photo as Graham...which I wasn't surprised since Gundam 00 wasn't current at all.

I found that one photo of me as Graham online. Not one photo of me as Neru...which was upsetting for me since I completely forgot to get photos taken for myself by friends.

Wow this post made me legit upset. Have you ever saw some neat fan art and decided it would make a great poster on your wall? People buy anime posters which follow the same concept anyway, so why not fan art?

Perhaps you could consider some artists that want to make money for their work. They know people want commissions or their ship rendered by their hand, so they draw it and sell it. Others, such as myself, want to support that artist so they can afford to pay bills or get a new tablet.

In some cases people sell full paintings or 3D prints for the bigger dollars.

Another ACen specific pet peeve: when people do stupid things under the guise of "character"
At the DC shoot, there were two "Harley Quinns" (In quotes bc shitty closet cosplay). One was a hamplanet girl with a shitty curly blonde wig and an annoying ass gun. The other was a guy who kept jumping into the front of every shot he was involved in and cackling, posing like a fucking naruto character. Everyone else in the shoot worked really hard on their costumes and looked hella good, and these two idiots kept on cackling and doing obnoxious shit.

I like buying fanart at a convention because they're usually printed on something that's better than the printer paper and color ink I have at home (and if the artist is using that too, I don't buy it).

I'm not that into comics, but IIRC Harley originally got her costume by robbing a costume shop. Would it have been so hard to go to one and get an actual replica? But on the subject of the person posing, I know.

I was at the JoJo shoot and this guy practically jumped into the area where everyone was posing to take up close pictures. In one case a cosplayers groin. I mean he was posing with them and taking pictures right in their faces. I put my phone down at that point and hoped someone would upload all the shots I missed.

It would have been different if he was cosplaying Joseph and using his camera with Hermit Purple, but no, just some guy in normal clothes.

Same. I work at a fabric store and parents come in with their kids to buy fabric for costumes and the kids are always super fucking excited and interested in the process (asking which fabric is for what part, etc).
And it's hard to get kids to wear something they don't want to wear. When I was a toddler if I didn't want to wear something my mom put on me I would literally tear it off myself.
Dragging an unwilling kid around a con all day would absolute hell, so I doubt anyone would bring their kid if the kid really didn't want to be there.

When cosplayers only cosplay generic attention whore costumes. Its so obvious that they didn't watch the shows or play the games when their entire wardrobe is just characters like Yoko, Cammy, Kasumi, Morrigan, and Powergirl. I met someone this past weekend who was bragging about her ~print gallery~ while we were in line for a panel. She showed me on her phone and I looked because I couldn't escape the panel line and it was all the generic popular skimpy costumes. I have seen kids got dressed up as inappropriate characters (Asuka from NGE, maid version) and belly dance on the stage. Those pair of soulless eyes staring at us are painful to look at.

And then there are those parents who dressed their kids as popular characters expecting us to give their kids special treatment since they are cute and being young. Please, I don't care they are just kids or what not, the fact that your kid starts to disturb the other contestants while they are performing warrants a slap on the face. It does not help that those kids are so freaking entitled and bratty due to the popularity their costume receives.

Selling fan art is actually illegal unless they get a license from the creator of the character/current rights holder. Even making fanart is debatably illegal but usually it falls under fair use. Once you step up to make a profit from it, it's not really fair use anymore is it? Everyone just sells fanart at cons because it's harder to get caught than online. There's this site that sells really cool light up sound activated t-shirts that were clever as hell. They had a bunch of Marvel related stuff at con and their website just has their own designs. Considering how much of a bitch disney is about copyright they've been lucky to not come across any at cons. Just because everybody else does it doesn't mean more people should. >Fanart should be for online promotion so people can find you and check out your originals
But at an anime convention, who actually goes to an Artists Alley to look for nonfandom work? Sure, some people might have enough of an online presence to have fans try to find them at a convention just to buy whatever their favorite artist has for sale, but I'd say the vast majority of people walking past their table at a con won't know who they are. And honestly, who's going to want to buy merchandise of someone else's OCs? No one's going to have the same investment as they do in a preexisting fandom - I'd guess that most AA sales are due to people recognizing characters from a show and going, "Oh, that's my favorite character, I have to have this!" and not "I have no idea who this character is, but it's pretty so I'll spend money on it".

Not going to touch on the legality issue aside from pointing out that Homestuck has a "no profiting off fanart" rule that people tend to stick to pretty well.

that'd make sense, but that's one of his outfits from act 5 (the character who gave it to him wasnt introduced until act 5 if i remember right) so even if they did there's literally no excuse

to be completely fair, its usually 15 year olds in terrible closet cosplays. it's still annoying though.

I've had a small con screw me and my bf over this way once.

>cool, we're getting a panel
>oh it's at 10am on sunday?
>kinda bad, but okay
>arrive at 9:30 like responsible people
>turns out the con doesn't even open till 10
>security doesn't want to open the door
>had to call the con supervisor so that they'd let us in early
>people didn't arrive at the panel until like 10:20
>yet still had to finish on time
>1/3 of prepared content wasted

Law of cosplay pictures

Out of the total pictures taken of you, only about a third of them will be uploaded on the internet.

Then out of that third, you'll only be able to find a tenth of them.

Of that tenth you'll actually like two or three shots

What you need to know is that you should be proactive in getting photos. Book photoshoots, ask photographers for shots, get friends to take your picture, bring your own camera and, above all else, ASK FOR BUSINESS CARDS.

No, this isn't basic business. What's the point in having all of these dealers if they sell the exact same crap at the same prices?

I dunno, I guess part of me is bitter that all the import bookstore went out of business. I never touched plushies or figures or shirts, but I would spend hundreds on Japanese magazines and artbooks.

Personally I love being the more obscure characters. My friends and I cosplay the Tullys from Game of Thrones and only get stopped by fans who like the books/show enough to recognize us. Meanwhile my friends who cosplay Joffrey and Cersei can't get anywhere because anyone who's ever seen a GoT ad think they're a fan and NEEDS a picture.

I think part of the problem might be the internet itself. A long time ago, odds and ends were imported in varying quantities, at different times, and nobody really knew all of what was out in Japan. Now we all know what the latest shows are, all the merchandise is all cataloged online, and we can even see which characters and items are the most popular. And as a result, nobody is importing anything risky from a sales/popularity standpoint when they can invest the same cash in Rei prize figures and Free! phone straps.

dose anyone remember when AX got double booked with the x-games?
>cosplayers+annoyed
>rednecks + drunk

There was some interesting conversations that weekend. The worst was they had to shut down like 5 blocks in the middle of downtown LA (right next to the convection center) to build a race track with a loop.
>detours everywhere
>traffic 10x worse than past years
>goggle maps too stupid to have gotten the memo
> st to the convention center blocked have to drive around.
> have to walk all the way around
> and drunk jocks/ rednecks the whole way.

>Tell them I'm not cosplaying Brendan (though I think he wears a hat, I don't think that is his hair), and Ruby DEFINITELY wears a hat (as he TAKES IT OFF in the manga)
>Most people just think I'm lying and am too lazy to style a wig
>Get shunned at Pokémon gathering because a group of Brendans are upset over my hat.
>Every Brendan in the group has brown hair that looks NOTHING like Brendan's hair/hat.

Why did this become a thing? It's pretty much bordering the lines of tracing and seems really uncreative regardless of what style they're redone in.
