For me personally it's about making things and expressing my interest in certain games, movies, shows, etc.
I cosplayed Jinx, found a Caitlyn and ran up to her and starting doing quotes and then we became friends. If we weren't in cosplay I wouldn't have known she had those same interests as I did.

I think when it's not even a "costume" anymore as just strategic covering without really any other redeeming factors.

Of course cosplay can be a form of seeking out attention, but it's not obnoxious until it's something like Tunamelt.

Plugsuits and bikinis are generally attention-seeking, but if they're true to the character in design, then I don't mind.
Anything that falls inline with "so and so in a swimsuit~!!" when they don't actually have that outfit is a little annoying but I shrug it off. At that point it's obvious you're just seeking attention, but at least you're not nude.

For example, all of the Kill la Kill outfits are ridiculous and attention-seeking, BUT their design requires actual effort in order to pull off, so while it's easy to see you just want to flaunt your stuff, as long as you have the craftsmanship to go with it, I'm alright with it.

But... why does it matter? If the attention is deserved then I don't see anything wrong with a girl getting lots of attention.

I think there are a lot of factors that go into cosplay. The social aspect, expressing love for a show, making something and showing it off, and getting attention.

Be honest, though, who doesn't like getting attention?

The con experience is really different than 'real life' for a lot of people, too. You go through 'real life' not really being paid attention, just going through day-to-day life, hiding away from the rest of society. At a con, when you're in cosplay, you feel more confident, you WANT people to come talk to you and you provide them with a way to approach you (cosplay).

I don't see anything wrong with someone getting a lot of attention, really. Both guys and girls wear 'slutty' outfits to get attention, and that's okay. They can do that if they want to.

Well, I don't really care if someone wants to show off their body but they should follow general laws and also preferably actually have a body that's nice to look at. Just ask yourself if this is really something you want to wear in public and maybe even be photographed.

I know personally extremely attractive dudes that will look good no matter what they do, and they can't even get themselves to get an actual job or even feel like they have a purpose/do fucking ANYTHING to further themselves. Your perception of physical attractiveness is flawed. It doesn't get you everything. In actuality, it does grease the gears for those who want to advance, but the thing is: there have to be wheels to grease. The hardest thing for humanity for figure out is how to achieve recognition/popularity from one another. It's actually pretty simple because if you do something of quality that serves it's purpose, it will actually entertain people, therefor garnering attention. Nobody comes to you for anything unless you're that good, and pretty much nobody is unless they're famous (and there's a reason for that) or they put their whole lives into it. Men are more susceptible to not knowing anything about how to attract the opposite sex. Most women I've met are very aware about how to attract, and if they aren't, they do it without knowing. For me, I draw the line for too much skin depending on the location. I don't think anyone should be showing off their tits at large familycons, but I'm ok with it at private shoots. Same goes with attention whoring. I think it depends on the person. For me cosplay is a hobby that makes me feel confident, but I'm not planning on selling out with my body. It's funny because I remember there was like a justice league episode where civilians were protesting wonder woman and one man called her a whore because of her costume. There is a difference between cosplaying and showing too much skin.

The difference is reached when showing skin starts to detract from the costume.

Example. If you're cosplaying as the kill la kill chick, you're going to be practically nude. That's expected. But if you're cosplaying as Misty from pokemon and your suspenders are wedged in your asscrack and you're walking around in a bikini, your outfit does not match what you are trying to cosplay, and you are attention whoring.

I'm a fairly boring person, and for me cosplaying (in my case armor), its like a escape, just to 'relax' and have at a convention, and to be someone (or something) else for a day (or more depending on the convention).

Do I seek attention? I'd say yeah, I made this suit of armor, please look at it, but being in the suit makes me feel safe(?) because I could play the part, being somewhat intimidating and standoffish

It is a fundamental truth that cosplay is done for attention. You want people to tell you that you look nice and that they want your photo and that they are SO FUCKING HAPPY that someone dressed as their favorite character, and so on..

It's about ego and praise and putting yourself out there so everyone can see you and tell you what a great whore you are.

Showing skin is just the easiest way to get there.

Sure, cosplaying is about attention whoring. in my humble opinion anyway. So what?
If you spend time and effort to look authentic/cute/sexy why shouldn't you show it off and get recognition for it?
I'll pay attention to, take photos of, and chat up people in good costumes because they earned the right to be the centre of attention by putting work both into their costume and their physique.
If you got a good costume but not the physique I'll pay more attention to your costume and less to you - I'm human, deal with it.
If you got a shitty costume and strip down to show off your body, just wait for halloween and go to a club. I've seen too many naked bodies, men and women, to care about just that, but whatever floats your boat.

I suppose some people find it a problem because those paying attention to cosplayers quite often either lack social skills, or are off-putting slobs, or both; but, you shoulda seen that coming when you went to a gathering that attract a large number of socially inept people.
