The problem with commissions is it really depends who you're commissioning for.

I watch say yes to the dress and see jews at Klienfelds drop 10-30 grand on wedding dresses. Now... a wedding dress is more important than cosplay for sure. But 10 g's for anything is pretty much insane.

Its give and take. If you want to turn a profit you need to be faster and better at what you do. You want to compete with 300 dollar dresses? You better figure out a way to have a competitive price with superior materials, or construction.

Thats just the nature of things. Things are mass produced in China/India/Pakistan/Wherever else is currently a shithole because we as 1st worlders really over value our work. Canada minimum wage is 10.25 an hour. Thats anything from being an IT guy to scrubbing toilets.

If you wanna make it, you may have to work for less than minimum wage at times. There are times when you can turn a huge profit, and there are times when you need to turn a small profit. The main thing is to have a continous supply of work.

As a graphic designer, you can charge over $70 an hour and if you're targeting the right clients, they'll pay. You're competiting against people charging under $10 an hour, they undervalue the work heavily but those people are getting different (shitty) clients.

The really is no wrong way to price your services, and the cosplay commission community could use a bump in prices.

I've ordered and had friends order custom dresses (hell, I know of a girl who asked for a custom Elizabethan dress from a movie studio) and none of the dresses went past 6k. I think she's exaggerating for effect to make a point, but it's not true that you have to have an established name to charge a fair price. If you have skills your work will speak for itself. If someone asked me to make that dress, I would do the embroidery by machine (hand embroidery just wouldn't be worth my time or worth the price difference for something that's not historical recreation) and it would probably come out between $1000-$1,500 with a mock up or in person fittings. If the cost wasn't worth it to the customer that's fine, but I wouldn't lower my prices or produce something of diminished quality for less just because people don't know my name. That's basically a wedding gown, and it's not going to cost less just because the intended purpose is cosplay rather than a wedding.

HS Dakimakuras aren't really a thing because of Hussie's policy regarding selling fanworks (basically comissions are OK, prints are not, and you're not allowed to advertise it as Homestuck). Which is probably why whatever chinese company DID make them aren't any longer.

With that said, there are a few comissioned Dakimakura ILLUSTRATIONS out there (I know Snowchildhero has a Mindfang, maybe a Dualscar), and I also heard of a fanartist known as McSiggy making a few ones but I don't know what happened with that, I'm fairly sure they gave up when they realized they wouldn't be able to make any cash off of it. Which really is just as good because they draw in this disgusting, chibi-like style and is the cancer of a lot of the Cronus ships.

What I wouldn't give for a Roxy one though. Sigh.

There's a group of SnK cosplayers who hang around millenium point in Birmingham every weekend. I went past them a few times this past Saturday and they were all sitting there in ebay jackets and cloaks, one of them appeared to be wearing a "lolita" skirt with her ensemble. I just don't know what to think. Part of me thinks "they're having fun, it's cool" and the other part of me thinks "they're sitting in silence staring at other people's kids playing in the fountain because there was no point to this outing other than to be anime nerds in public. Plus they don't look great".

Anyone else seen them? Anyone here one of them and care to explain your odd choice of weekend activity?
