I think the difference back then was that there was just more of a community feel. /cgl/ felt like a crafts board of sorts too. The drama had less of a malicious aspect to it as well, it was more or less just masa acting like a drunk idiot at some con or another and other people mentioning how drunk and retarded he had been, but it was left at that. I also remember less relationship drama and the well known-ish female trips like LRC and Soni seemed to be significantly less slutty (in before slutshaming) and less likely to do the whole serial monogamy thing, so perhaps that was why there was less fodder for drama in the first place.

I definitely agree that the Asian crew played a big role in fucking things up, but the migration of genuinely mentally disturbed people like a good portion of the lolita livejournal and tumblr communities also played a big role.

People like DerpQueen and Voldie really were the final nails in the coffin.
