If you plan on making one yourself youre going to need more than one layer. So many people use one layer of tulle/whatever and it looks awful. The more layers the better.

What do you gulls think of wearing a petti in a color that doesn't watch? I got my first petti as a gift, but it's a bright color that isn't very close to anything in my wardrobe. It's a great petti other than that though, malco modes, sooo soft and fluffy!

I made a knee-length skirt with a sewn-in petticoat of dress net (like pic related level of volume, but longer and shaped like a cupcake top). How do I go about storing this/preventing it from deflating? I was thinking of sewing thin boning into the edge of the overskirt (where the ruffles meet the skirt) to help it keep its shape.

People will say they are about ~modesty~ but no. Unless you are an idiot who bends over with straight legs or walks to work in a wind tunnel this isn't really an issue.
Real reasons to wear bloomers:
-they are kawaii (though most are frumpy as fuck)
-warmth in winter
-sometimes look cute peeking under skirt
-ones with many layers can add to your poof
-going up a tall escalator or stairs
for ~modesty~ you can just wear comfy shorts or whatever else.

Modesty, because there are plenty of horror stories out there where people have literally gone up to lolitas and lifted up their skirts to see what is creating the 'poof' as if it's actually okay to do such a thing. Plus, an unexpected windy day.
Also, for sheer comfort. Even though some petticoats have an inbuilt slip, most don't and they can be very scratchy against your legs, even with stockings on.

Just got Malco Modes in the mail today! 580 and 582 (search for Zooey and Jennifer on the MM website). I haven't tried them on as I'm too exhausted at the moment but the 582 is so extremely fluffy that I'm sure it will turn up light fabrics at the ends so I'll be great for heavier fabrics. The 580 I'm a little worried may just not be enough poof for an A-line but I'll try it on later and see. They're both very soft and nice to the touch, with buttons to expand the waistline which is great. No in-built slip so maybe I should finally invest in bloomers, as I've gotten away with it with my CP cupcake petti so far.

Someone (possibly you) asked me where I got my petti that I wore with my Rose Stained Glass skirt in another thread, but seeing as that thread has gone to shit I'll post it here LOL.
This is the petticoat I bought:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/281205332417?var=580248972599&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649
Another anon recommended it in one of the previous petti threads and for the price I figured it was worth a shot. It's the perfect length for my skirt, but the material is a tiny bit problematic. It's a very stiff organza and it misbehaved quite a bit when I was moving around just to take photos, sometimes the dress would catch between uneven lumps in the poof and resulted in weird creasing/bunching (pic related). I was actually going to make a petti thread in the next day or two if one didn't show up, I have virtually no experience with this material so I don't know if there's a way I could soften/relax this petticoat. I've had it airing out for a few days hoping the weirdness would kind of fall out of it, but it's still as stiff as ever.
Worse case scenario I have to wear a separate slip with it, which wouldn't be so bad I guess (even though the skirt has one built in). It's just a pain in the butt, lol.

Ooh, yikes, I have something similar coming in the mail. Maybe if you handwashed it, it might soften it up?

I personally bought a rockabilly petti from a local store, it ended up being 65 cm. I wore it with pic related, the poof was nice because it's chiffon and the length ended up being OK once I pulled the waisband up high enough.

>> No.7514493

Chances are good that handwashing will soften it, I just haven't tried it yet because I've been busy. And honestly if for some reason I manage screw it up, I won't be out a lot of money so I'm not extremely worried lol. If all goes well I'll come back and post about it though!
One thing I can't complain about here is the length (lol). It was absolutely perfect for this skirt length, I could move and jump and do all kinds of things without it peeping or making an ugly shelf at the bottom, so that's a plus!

I only have one petticoat because I just got into the fashion. I wanted a cp one but my SS said they were sold out when I made a taobao order. The one I have is just one I made myself, it's super ugly but it also gives a pretty good amount of poof. It was just nylon netting sewn in tiers and then gathered bridal tulle over top so it would be smoother.

My petticoat is at a friends place right now but I can post a picture when I get it back, which will hopefully be tomorrow. But here is a worn one, it doesn't look very good here, I had been wearing it all day and had been sitting down for a large part of it and had no time or place to rearrange it. To make step by step I can write it out.
>figure out desired length of petticoat (plus seam allowance)
>divide by three
>cut up nylon netting into strips that long.
>decide how much gather you want per tier
>I can't remember the exact that I used buy I think I went
>waist measurement x 3 first tier
>" x 5 second tier
>" x 6 third tier
I don't recommend these though because it ended up having too much volume at the bottom and I had to cut triangles out at the bottom to make the shape more bell like.
>gather them and sew them together.
>make waist band by just folded over material
>wide enough to get over hips to get on
>sew nylon part on.
>cut bridal tulle to length of petticoat
>gather and sew onto waist band
>put elastic though waist band.
That was pretty much it I guess. There are probably a lot better methods out there.

Tried on the MM pettis.
I was right about the 582 being so super fluffy that lighter fabrics just wouldn't work, it sort of makes a concave instead of being straight lines or convex. It did however, look fantastic with a heavier fabric (I used AatP's Operetta Bouquet jsk which is an almost denim-like fabric, very heavy) and I imagine it would work just as well with a velvet Baby dress which generally tend to crush pettis with their weight from my experience.
The 580 was just perfect with a standard light dress though if it does deflate or people like a lot of poof, layering with a smaller (flatter/cheaper) petti wouldn't go astray.
Verdict:
I highly recommend the 580 for a beginner who is intending on having a substantial A-line closet.
I would strongly recommend the 582 for anyone in colder climates who would wear a lot of thicker or heavier fabrics or those that choose to wear heavier prints released by AatP and the like.
I would say that most lolitas with a substantial wardrobe and are fully engaged with the fashion should own both petticoats, but most certainly the 582 if they have a variety of fabrics in the wardrobe as I do (I have my wardrobe separated into winter/summer items).
MM are a bit pricey and can hold up to brand prices but they are well worth the price, I am very impressed with the quality and know a large portion of the community own these petticoats.
Hope I wasn't too confusing and happy to answer any further questions!

I have an AP petti from the special Dream Fantasy pack and I love it. It's basically my go-to petti for just about anything. I do like a lot of poof though, so I do layer it. I own a lot of pettis for comparison:

CP Bell
CP regular A-line
CP 'super explosive' a-line
AP LP Bell
AP Long black layering patti (great for empire waist dresses that don't need a ton of poof, like dream sky, which is what I wear it with if I'm not using it for layering)
IW light layering petti
VGD
Malco Modes 582 (I have not modified this, I use it for a long petti for dresses like the long KL jelly fish jsk for example)
Dear Celine Embroidered bell
Dear Celine 'frothy' (I think it's the one in OP's picture) bell

This petti is A-line, which can look OK, but sometimes the space near the top of the skirt will look kind of funny (because there's more fabric there, but less poof). It's a really easy fix though, just take the first layer of the petti and tuck it up into the waistband in five or six places, it'll create more of a bell shape.

wow, they made an even BIGGER one? holy crap.

in terms of quality though, both the CP a-lines I have are pretty bad. The 'daily' a-line (I don't remember what it's called, but it's the one most people buy from CP for a regular a-line) came to me smelling terrible with holes in all the tiers (out of the package) that I had to sew. The length was listed wrong, or at least the one I received was 3-5 cm shorter than the listed length, so maybe they sent me the wrong one? And the fabric is this weird crinkly mess that never relaxed. The super explosive's has a completely different material which is nice, but also had a hole in it from the package and is extremely delicate and a couple more holes opened up just from me putting it on my dummy.

My bell however is great, never had a problem with it.

In terms of longeavity I ranked AP > CP > VGD > DC (not including my layering pettis since they have not a lot of volume anyway).

The DC ones deflate pretty badly within a year, and I don't wear my VGD much because it's deflated a bit which makes skirts lay weird on it. But CP and AP are holding in there really well.

Would be cool if you could make one! Do you have other pettis to compare to?

That's even better. I hate the feel of scratchy fabric.

What kind of material would hold up best under very heavy fabrics like velveteen?
I tried DC's Frothy but it deflated so fast.
There is so much to choose from, tulle, organdie, chiffon, etc.

I am looking for a "stiff" petticoat for pic related, anyone have any suggestions for affordable or reliable places to buy? Thank you.

What would you recommend for an ankle-length dress like this one? I can't really find anything that would be the right shape.

Question, what kind of petti would you wear for empire waist dresses? also would I have to hike it up or just wear on my waist as normal?

>> No.7533092

>>7533086
I wear an A-line at my waist for all my empire waist dresses. Since I prefer the look of causal poof with an empire waist depending on the dress I sometimes forgo the petti and use a fluffy chiffon underskirt.

Pic related, something like it atleast.
>>7533086
I think a-line works the best, doubt you need to hike it up, and if you would notice that best yourself when trying it on.

For me, I wear bloomers to keep my thighs from rubbing together and getting all sweaty and uncomfortable. Plus, it covers up your underwear and can add poof.

What material is bloomers made out of?
I want to make my own pair.

It depends on how you want your design to be but I would say cotton would be a safe choice, and then you can look at the different kind of fabrics and see what you like.

Hey there! I have that same dress in the black colorway and it's my favorite. Polite sage for no contribution.

I have a BSSB 'casual' one. I bought it two years ago and now it gives a nice shape over another one but no poof at all. I don't think Baby's are worth their price tag

I hate CP's a-lines. They're either too poofy or not poofy at all. I want something that isn't too poofy. I had one of dollscrop's a-lines, but it got torn by accident, and until now I can't find back a perfect a-line petticoat...

CP A-line will deflate after a while, I think it's perfect after it deflates a little.

I just made a cupcake petti and the most time consuming part was ruffling. With a ruffler foot it could be done in an hour or two using basic math and about $20 worth of materials (if you don't have a coupon).

Best thing is you can make them any color you want. Rainbow pettis for itas everywhere.

I have a bunch from the LJ user ririnhime, they're nothing super special but they do the trick and are comfortable. I have some flannel ones from Ick too and they're comfortable and toasty as hell for cold northern winters. Personally, I cba to pay brand prices for undergarments, though if you like peeking bloomers you may want to consider brand.

I've mentioned this in other threads but I got a customized length A-line petti from Fanplusfriend and it's actually my best volume/shape petti. The exact model I have doesn't seem to be on the new site though it's basically the same as the Omnipotent one in construction I think, you just need to let the tulle crunch down (yes, purposely deflate your petti) so that it's voluminous without being crazy stiff and wide.

I got mine from an Etsy shop called "Basic Love."
They're cheap and pretty nice quality, though the fabric is a little thin so you have to wear the appropriate color underwear if you don't want them showing through.

It's a really cute print isn't it? I actually really like it in yellow as well.
