Because we havent had one in a while and I love looking back at old cosplays. Post pics or videos.

ACP has playlists with lots of footage from late 90's to early 2000's cosplay contests would recommend checking them out even if the film quality is horrible:

Cute family dressed up from Laputa to start!

Wait is this someone actually cosplaying Bondage Fairies? People actually have done that?

Yes. I remember this cosplay and thinking "wow, that's some guts to cosplay from a porno manga..."

Meanwhile, have a Gundam cosplay from the 1970's...

I recognize young Yaya and Nyanko (miss her!). Now I'm going through Cosplaylab's spotlight page and missing all these people who don't cosplay anymore. http://www.cosplaylab.com/spotlight/

YEP! That would be Gchan of Ginny McQueen.

>>7514241
Yes it is. I thought the costume was pretty good for something made in 2000.

Yes it is! Same with the Ayumi in this post. >>7512841 I think she looks really pretty in the Alice shot.

Bondage fairies was my guilty pleasure manga as a teenager. It was so awkward when my dad found them and said he bought a volume too.

Yep. This was the Best in Show from AX 2001, IIRC. Ahh, memories...back when costumes like this blew the minds of everyone who saw them. It was such a simple time. Now my oldfag self looks at this and only notices how shitty those ruffles on Yaya's Alice skirt look. My cosplay snobbery can't even let me enjoy nostalgia!

To be fair, everyone was more or less shitty in 2001. I remember when that blinding pink color was the only kind of pink you could get for wigs unless you wanted like... fuchsia.

Here is the video of the skit!

Which considering the year it was done was actually pretty good and obviously well rehearsed.

I miss Rosiel too. I had the biggest girl crush on her back in the early 2000s when she was like the only good Rosiel cosplayer. Even better than the Japanese cosplayers . Damn it. She inspired me to make Mika. I just really miss those days and good times all around in general. /oldfag

dude this is great
out of curiosity, in 2001 would people have understood what they were cosplaying from, or its still just a obbscure cover art of a single chapter.

AX 1997! Trying to see how far back I can find pictures.

Back then, yes, people were generally cosplaying from things they had seen and liked. You still had attention whores and stuff, but it wasn't so much of a popularity contest as it is now.

you've never seen predatorrat's mahou shoujo ai cosplay, have you?

though granted she's really more of a fetish gravure model than a legit cosplayer... still. makes a damn fine makoto from blazblue.

>>7514436
Yes, definitely. You may not have seen every episode given the release schedule of licensed VHS or the challenge of collecting a full set of fan subs, but people chose cosplay based on what they knew and liked. Obscure/untranslated stuff was more inaccessible, and the attitude around cosplay at the time was that it more about showing your love for a series or character than crafting an amazing piece based on something you've never heard of. Cons were also much smaller compared to now and cosplay was DIY hobby oriented. Cosplay from Ranma 1/2, Magic Knight Rayearth, Sailor Moon, Evangelion, and a few other series were very common because the series were accessible in English. My first cosplays (late 90s) were from Vision of Escaflowne and Fushigi Yuugi, both of which I loved.
