I'm in the process of making this. I kinda bought the wrong colors, but too late to go back now. I started it like last January/December of 12. It was my first real non-plush sewing project with my machine and I screwed it up royally. I had to seam rip the body because the seams were just hot messes. I don't even know what I did to the sleeves so I got rid of them altogether. I figure, Woopers have no arms so it should be ok. What do you guys think? Also, in the future, would it work to just make the body (including legs) and sleeves onepiece? I'm just not comfortable with sleeves yet and I don't want to waste more fabric by mucking things up again.

I actually have that tutorial. Thank you though! I've looked at a ton of kigu tutorials, if not all of them. I watched a video tutorial of someone making their own while I did mine. Lucky enough, I have a kigu to trace my pattern from and just extended the legs using another pair of pants so it would reach my ankles this time. That was simple enough. Sleeves just aren't my friends right now. I'm hoping to have this finished in the next month so if there's a kigu thread then, I'd love your critiques!

In the meantime, I have 10 yards of white fleece waiting to become something. It was originally going to be a Cinnamaroll or Milk kigurumi, but I'm not sure if I want to go that route anymore.

That method looks really convenient! Thanks. The issue is when I sewed it, it just kept getting really bunched up at the parts where the shoulder and side meet the actual sleeve and I ended up tightening the armhole. I really can't say how I messed up though because it's been over a year since. I think next time around I'll either draw the sleeves out with the body or use that method you linked.

I was thinking about making one for my little sister (she's 2, almost 3) and I was wondering how I could make it last her a couple of years without her swimming in it now. I was thinking ties or a row of snaps, so the extra fabric can be pushed back/rolled up while she's still small and then released as she gets bigger.
Anyone have experience with that or does it sound like an okay plan?

What I've seen mentioned elsewhere is hiding an extra two or three inches in the seams and hems, and possibly something like a sewn down fold in the middle of the sleeves or pants legs that shortens it. When the child grows a bit bigger then you rip out the stitches (and resew it if it's still too big).

At that age, they grow really fast, so I imagine you're prolonging the lifespan of the kigu from "a few months" to maybe a year and some months, but quite frankly, there's no real way to adjust the armhole much bigger or smaller (you could add elastic but I'm not sure how far they'll go), so it's a bit of a given that the kigu won't have years of life in it exactly.

>> No.7460490

>>7458486
This is how most commercially made sweatshirts with side seams are constructed because it's fast and allows the work to be done flat. It's one continuous seam, cuff to hem, so you make the sleeve into a tube with that same seam. If you're doing ribbing or a separate cuff, you also attach that before running the sleeve/side seam. I would not construct a blouse this way, but it works great for kigurumi, sweatshirts, and T-shirts.

If it's a warmer time of the year, get some color matching flipflops. If the kigu is darker (black cat, bat, etc) you could go punk-ish with some black boots. I made an extremely simple one following a tutorial on the internet. I think it's a good first project. It really lets you try a lot of different things, and the shapes are not super basic, but still simple, so you will get to experience how it is put together and learn more about how patterns work and what happens when you put it together. It also doesn't matter that much if your sems are not perfect, because it's not supposed to be skin-tight anyway. I really recommend it. But try to sew the decoration into it if you can, it's a pain to add things afterwards. One thing, my kigu was made with fleece, but it turned out my sewing machine couldn't get through, so had to sew it all by hand. It might take much longer than you expect in your fabric is too thick.

I would say they're not hard if you have basic sewing experience. They're not fitted, and you don't need to finish the seams. Plenty of tutorials can be found online, check this thread for a few. And fleece is the best material for kigus!

I made a dinosaur kigu a year or two ago for halloween, and when I stretch in it (it's not as baggy as most kigus I see) sometimes the seams pop.

Which brings me to my question, what is the recommended stitch for a kigu? I straight seamed my old one like a fool, would zigzag be better and more durable for a stretch fabric?

Use a straight stretch stitch. (image is the symbol used for it) It's a reinforced stitch so it's stronger and more resistant to breaking than a zigzag.

Has anyone thought of making an Oogie Boogie kigurumi? I'm thinking of doing a gray burlap exterior for that coarse pattern Oogie's outfit has, then a cotton interior because I'd be scratching my skin off in a burlap kigurumi.
