I really love DDs, I used to do faceups and sell them at local cons but I don't do that much anymore. Personally, I don't wear lolita - It's strictly a 'for my dolls' hobby. But doll clothes sometimes cost as much as people clothes (not lolita brand prices necessarily, but $150-$200 for a nice outfit is common). Doll clothes currently pop up for cheap on Mandarake, so that's a good place to look for official Volks dresses - they make lovely lolita for all their different dolls.

Alice Collection also has really cheap dresses in lolita, but sometimes the quality can be shoddy. Best to ask for reviews or hunt around forums for reviews of pieces.

It was just a standard DD2 with a head that I slightly customized. I think that's partially why I don't want another one for a while, it took me forever to sand and mod and do the faceup that even if I get a new one she won't look the same. I guess that's kind of pathetic though hah.

I've been to several when I went to Japan.
You can usually buy the basic DDs.
The Akiharbara store can get really busy so be aware when you go.
Some of the stores will have english speaking staff, most of the time not (in my experience). Or the english is mainly phrases like "5% extra charge on credito card". It is always a good idea to have some grasp of Japanese or at least a translation guide.

I strongly suggest going to the Tenshi-no-Sato in Kyoto. They have lovely gardens and provide props so you can photograph your dolls.

I would suggest checking out Den of Angels' wiki. They list doll companies, and you can search for each companies website and see the varying sculpts.

Other than that, browsing owner pictures on tumblr and seeing if you fall in love with a certain sculpt could work.

I'm a doll lover/owner but I don't own any bjd's yet. Right now the majority of my dolls are still in the box. Barbie collectors edition from my younger years and some really old dolls inherited from my great aunt and tons of porcelain dolls. Right now my obsession is the Ever After High Dolls which is cheaper than what I'm used to collecting but they got me with the storylines.

>> No.7485413

>>7484149
Well, that's one way fo looking at it. Personally I also think dolls look cuter in lolita than most humans, but in my eyes it's because they have bigger heads, very round faces, and bodies that are small enough to allow tons of layer...

>> No.7485418

Since this is the only time I've seen an intersection of lolita discussion and BJD discussion...why do you guys think there is less hostility towards owning replica (as long as you admit it's a replica) than there is towards recasts...? It's basically the same concept. However, if someone owns some legit and some replica, it's usually like "oh, whatever, as long as she doesn't wear it in an inappropriate context and doesn't only buy replica" on the other hand if a doll owner has a recast it's "how dare you, you're destroying artist's rights..."

>> No.7485468

>>7485418

Reasons:

1. Some bodies do not fit brand clothes. This doesn't mean replicas are acceptable, but it's an understandable reasoning as we don't want to see fattychans stretch out burando either. Dolls don't have this problem.

2. There is more wear and tear on clothes, particularly if you want to go clubbing in lolita, or do housework in lolita. Dolls don't have this problem either.

3. Particular to this board, we have very, very vocal replicachans who absolutely want their love of replicas to be accepted. If you wear secret shop tea parties, this is a sign that they can wear replicas, nevermind the differences between print and non-print replicas. If Meta can copy one shoe out of a whole panel of artwork, this means they're free to wear AP, btssb and every other brand's replicas, even if their artwork is 100% original. They just never stop posting reasons why you need to respect their need for replicas. I'm waiting for the day one of them wears an AP replica to an AP tea party and then bawws about replica acceptance afterwards.

I ordered from them awhile back, just a sample piece. Honestly, the print was quite crisp, but didn't hold up for super super tiny details. The fabric I got was quite thin (forgot the name of it), would've been good for a doll dress.

The ones with big heads are Pullips -- ujust google it and you should find pretty good articles and fansites, as well as several places to buy. Collecting/buying them is not very complicated since it's just one company and there are quite a few loli-wearing Pullip releases. They cost $100-$150 with more for special releases

The ones with more realistic proportions are BJDs and this is a pretty good crash sourse on them: bjd-wtf.livejournal.com. They cost $250+ for childlike ones that are about a foot and a half tall, $450+ for the adult-proportioned ones (most of the ones in this thread.) There are only a few official lolita outfit BJDs and they're pretty rare and expensive, some companies sell separate lolita clothes for BJDs (see mentions upthread -- Volks, Dollheart, etc)

resinsoul are hated among a large chunk of the BJD community because they are 'cheap Chinese dolls.' Recasts get the same kind of scathing hatred directed towards them.

Personally, a small resinsoul is cheap enough for you to practice faceup/sewing. And when you get great at faceups, you can make your resinsoul look great and then, should you choose, move on to more 'luxurious' dolls such as Soon and Iplehous.

Good luck anon. If you do get a doll to practice on, be sure to post in the /toy/ doll thread, we love seeing WIP and giving (mostly) constructive criticism.

Oh my god they are.

For the anon originally asking, there are replica bjds out there, but I honestly just wouldn't suggest them, especially if you intend to make any sort of money out of this hobby either by doing mods or faceups or any kind of commission work your dolls will be photographed for. Replica or recast dolls are not tolerated nearly as well as replica print lolita is. Yes there are communities specifically where its welcome to discuss them, but they're outright banned from most doll forums and the biggest forum will even ban you if they find you've linked to a Flickr, Tumblr, or similar where you've posted your recasts. Plus as someone who used to belong to some of the recast communities, I've seen how often an order with the casting places goes wrong. Usually pretty sketchy people and some rotten business practices going on.

Resin Soul dolls can look pretty cute with a little work (I've seen some really cute Meis) and there's a few other companies that cost only a little more but still about the same or cheaper than a recast. Have you looked at retailers like Mint On Card or Denverdoll or Junkyspot yet? They carry a pretty wide price range and some very nice dolls and are kind of one stop shop.

Pullips are a good starting point. They're only around $120. For many people, Pullips serve as the "gateway doll."

You can also consider lica, ai-doll, and Jenny which are 1/6 scale dolls (think Barbie).

If you have a lot of dough, then youd probably want to jump right in with an expensive doll. Mandarake is a great place for pre-owned dolls at a very discounted price. Y!JA is also great, if you're alright with paying the proxy fee.

If your major draw to these dolls is the customization factor there's a few different options too. Pullip just started producing a line called Make It Own, which is a kit containing a blank doll head, standard body, eye mechanism, and clear unpainted eye chips. You paint the face, paint or install custom eye chips, assemble and add wig and clothing (they fit 8-9 size wigs and standard 1/6 Barbie type clothes). There's also a few other smaller customizable dolls in that range and some that even get hybridized with Pullip/Blythe/Jenny/etc like Obitsu, Azone (which have darling little anime dolls), Volks Dollfie 27cms, Hujoo (not everyone's cup of tea but could in theory be hybridized with a Pullip to form a 1/6 scale all plastic bjd). Most of these will be way cheaper, in the range of $50, but you have to remember they come completely basic, no paint or clothes and often no hair or eyes.

If you're looking for a completely dressed finished doll you might do best following the other anon's advice and getting a secondhand doll through Mandarake or a collectors forum like Den of Angels.

Walking into a Volks store is a magical and frightening experience.
So many dolls you're not allowed to touch.
So many things you're not allowed to photograph but that you really really want to.
So many choices for clothes off the rack that *will* fit your doll.
Staff that know everything about dollfies you could possibly want to ask them, who make you and your doll feel special and who are insanely passionate about the subject... but who only speak Japanese.
They are really good at guessing what I want via pointing and smiling though.

Eh, my first doll was less than $200 for MSD size with free shipping, and I only now let her go after 3 years of love. You just have to look for cheaper companies, there's plenty. Or buy secondhand.

Honestly, sometimes I think lolita is in the long run actually far more expensive than BJDs, unless you insist on collecting artisan or limited dolls (or have an obssesion for accessories). There's less pressure for constant buying and big collections, the DIY aspect is much stronger and it's much easier to make some money back off your dolls through commissions.

The thread those pictures were taken from was a Gallery+ (rather than wade through shit pics, the mods pick out some that are better than the norm) thread. People were oozing excitement over this and received it well. You would probably do well making doll-sized replicas, as strange as that sounds. Most DoA members still think of lolita as a form of cosplay.

I'm really against replicas in lolita but I'd buy a replica print set for my BJD in an instant. It feels different from "I need to buy replica because brand won't fit" because it's not even for people. It may be a little hypocritical but it's not like they released a lot of prints for dolls anyways if that makes sense.

It's not hypocritical at all because rather than making a copy of something already available but for cheaper (like with replica dresses, recast dolls, etc), they are making something that does not exist previously (a doll-size version of the dress). My solution to this is getting an adhesive strip of velcro and putting the soft side on the top of my doll's head (which is a very powerful adhesive; I can't get it to come off even if I wanted to) and sewed the other side to the inside of the wig cap. This is a permanent thing though so if you change wigs a lot it may not be the best for you.

Another solution I read about was wrapping a rubber band around the top of the head and that provides friction for the wig cap to hold on to. It might work better if you glued a rubber band to the circumference of the wig cap though.

Oh hi, this is from me
I'm going to make a journal update tonight, but hear have an image.
though far from perfect, it is mostly done now.
I still need to do some fake waist ties and line the skirt. Some of the lace came out a bit weird. It has a weird gather problem in the back because I did the math wrong when pleating it...I would completely re-do the bodice pattern if I made another jsk, it is a bit to bulky for my liking and a bit too messy on the inside...

The fabric is from spoonflower, I basically re-drew the print from one of AP's preview graphics in Photoshop and played with it till the scale was right.
The fabric will remain private however, I would like to keep my spoonflower account.

I do have enough materials to make 2 more MSD sized JSKs, and when I was done with the set I was toying with the idea of making some to sell. If not to go through my fabric stash more then anything...like a cute blouse jsk and headbow set?

I'm not sure people would be interested, I am not the best seamstress ever, and I am so bad at taking photos...I would not know how to price it at all? I probably have to go back and see just how much time I put into them and go from there. I started the project in 2012 and put it down for a long while so I don't really have an hour estimate at this point.

BUT WHATEVER I AM RAMBLING.

TLDR, would people buy a MSD sized jsk, headbow, blouse, + Petticoat set if I put it on the marketplace?

Thank you, hear is a crappy ms paint to help me explain....
basically, you cut some short lengths of ribbon, fold them in half, baste them down to the back piece so they don't shift around with the folded part on the inside... Then sandwich them with the lining/the rest of the dress as normal.
Finally run some ribbon through the little loops and tie a bow at the top.

Does that make sense?

Doll shop elastic is not some magical special doll-only elastic. Its the same kind that everyone else sells. You just need to know what thickness and you're good. I would also recommend going for white just to avoid stains, and elastic that is made of several thinner rubber "threads" twisted together and wrapped is better than the same thickness but in a single rubber piece. Less prone to snapping.

I like that this whole "Dolls+guns+lolita" is becoming a thing.

She's supposed to be """"" steam punk""""" which I supposed was achieved by giving her a mask. I absolutely adore her cage skirt. (And i'm glad you enjoy it too)
