I make fleece hats of my own design... My friends say I should open an Etsy shop but I don't know if they are *kawaii* enough.

It looks like you have a cute concept and decent pattern for the hat. Maybe iron the ears before taking the better pics so they aren't wrinkly (I also can't see the finishing from this pic but I'm assuming it is there). It does look like something people would buy, though, if well made.

Thanks for the suggestion! None of my test ones have been ironed yet (I'm doing a batch of 15, and ironing is the last step) but it's on my list before photographing them properly. I used to sell fleece hats too, they're good money but they get pretty boring to make after a while. Only really crappy ones get priced at $15 though, you want to go for at least $20 for normal ones and $25-35 for anything more detailed. Beginner needle felter, here! Definitely try Jo-Ann's first since it's easier to get it there than make a whole order and then find out you're not into it or something.

Terrible webcam image but this was my first project and it took maybe an hour? Plants are pretty much the easiest thing to make and it gives you a lot of opportunity to work out methods on your own since there really aren't a lot of how to guides since it is such an obscure thing (at least here in America).

There is this one youtube person that has cutest tutorials though and you should invest in a set of mini cookie cutters if you want an easy way to make hearts/stars/etc.

I just started making things, so they're pretty shitty. But I wanted something to do, and for years I've been surrounded by cosplayers without learning to sew. I heard that one of the simplest things to learn on were pillows and hats. I made my first pillow, and my roommate wanted to buy it off me. So I made a few more in fandom characters, and took them to a mini con. OTK Gaming Fest this last weekend. The con chair is a buddy of mine, and even though they didn't have a real vendor area, he got me a litte table. I made 70 from five purchases. cross stitch is just one embroidery stitch repeated. i love it! it's so easy and very satisfying. there are some "fancy" cross stitch stitches (I think they're borrowed from blackwork stitches? not entirely sure), but usually cross stitch patterns only use the cross stitch and backstitch, maybe french knots. there's some super cute companies on etsy/bigcartel doing their own modern patterns, so you're not stuck with super grandma ones.

anyway, with embroidery you use all the stitches. oh, and usually the pattern is already printed on fabric, or you have to trace it on. With cross stitch it's more typical that you have a grid and a color key to work from. if you have any questions let me know! i've been cross stitching since i was really young and i've been doing embroidery this past year. i should dig up some pix...

Kinda sad that the head looked okay till I added the red/blue part. I know he's a darker grey but I didn't have a lot of it to work with. If I made the red/blue part lighter, it'd probably looks more matchy, maybe like a pastel version of Ribbot. Oh well, I'm still learning.

I'm also a needle felter; I started with making little dolls (oval body, circle head, little arms and legs), nothing too detailed. I think as long as you start with something you enjoy (in my case making dumb amigurumi substitutes from felt) it's easy to go from there! Felting is a very simple process, and I also really recommend trying out different fibers (plain wool roving and batting, alpaca, merino, bamboo, etc). A lot of Etsy sellers sell random little odds and ends that are cheap and great to experiment with. I love all the fiber grab bags I've gotten.

Lastly, when you go about making bigger things, make bases with batting or roving that felts easy, or roving you don't like the color of. Then cover it all up with the nicer stuff. Mine are usually bases of batting covered with merino, which felts much more finely and makes a smooth, clean finish without too much random fuzz coming off it.

I draft sewing patterns (and then sew them, of course). I'd like to start selling some lolita sewing patterns, but I'm stuck on how to distribute them. Obviously, I could do PDF patterns, but then they'd end up getting shared for free, plus they always seem to come out a bit wonky. I'm looking into getting them printed, but digitizing and grading are very expensive, so I was wondering if anyone had any experience with any pattern grading/CAD software, and any programmes you'd recommend or steer clear of? I've also heard that you can do it in Illustrator, but I wonder if it's as easy as it seems to be, or whether I should just spend what I would spend on Illustrator on some fit-for-purpose software. I have a little capital now, and I'll have more in a couple of months, so I'm open to spending a fair amount (around £1k - £2k if that's what it takes).

That looks okay, but I think (if you'd like crit) that the lettering should be bolder- the words get kinda lost in the bow. >>7469596 is the best photo I've seen so far, but the box pattern is encroaching on the bow, pull it back a bit and let the product speak for itself.

Logo is waaaay too big in thumbnail view. Consider making it about 50-70% opaque. Or re sizing it smaller.

Are you actually legitimately mentally retarded?

I also find it really hilarious that you 'don't care about 2 people who think your photos are shit' yet you're trying really hard to prove us wrong.

If you resized it smaller the type would be unreadable. The issue i'm seeing is that the type is too small and the bow is too big (in both logos).

I think this is most recent thing I've crocheted, which is a little sad for me since I use to do it a lot. Made this sometime in November maybe. I can't remember.

Youtube videos are the best thing for a beginner when it comes to knitting. It's hard to get a sense of how it works from books.

>> No.7469783

quilting blogs have tons of good general sewing tips (also some bags and other home decor usually); clothing blogs will have clothing help. if you want some specifics, i could probably go through my blog list and find some. >>7469756 is right, youtube videos are the best if you're learning to knit. i was trying to teach myself from some books for 7+ years off and on and it wasn't until i finally sat down with a pattern i liked and some videos that i really got started. i learned socks from heidibearscreative's tutorial, i really liked it!

oh and same goes for crochet, if you were intersted in that - videos, or have someone show you in person if you can. once you get started you should be able to pick it up really well on your own!

Do many of you seagulls draft your own patterns? I want to start doing it myself, but I am kinda at a lost on where to start.

>> No.7469954

>>7469942
I do. I started by first getting pre-made patterns and trying to understand how they worked. If you know how to sew it's easy to figure it out. Getting old clothes and ripping them apart can help as well. Start out making patterns to fit your own measurements and use muslin to draft the garments. Take notes every step of the way so you'll figure out what works and what doesn't and then next time it will be much easier to make the same item, even in different sizes.

Another thing you can do is find similar patterns and begin by altering them slightly until you get a feel for it.

Thank you so much. I just feel so overwhelmed by it all! But if I can figure it out, it'll save me a lot of money by not buying patterns.

I'm planning to open a shop online, so I thought this was the best place to ask, but what's your preferred platform, or platform that's the most newbie friendly? I was thinking of going with Storenvy since there's no fees involved and then branching out from there depending on the success. Would this be a good idea?

Also, how do you guys go about pricing? I already have a set price I'm selling my hats for when I'm dealing with co-workers and friends, but looking at what's already online, it feels as though people would want to go with the cheaper alternative.

>> No.7470071

I'm the hat anon from earlier in the thread >>7467629
I personally feel that Etsy is more reliable than storenvy, since storenvy is mostly taobao resellers. There's no harm in making both.
Etsy only costs $.20 per listing, so it isn't a huge investment, just don't expect overnight results.

Pricing depends on your product, is your design original, or could they get an identical one from a reseller for $5? If it's original, then calculate up how many hours it takes to make each one and pay yourself minimum wage for your work, then add in Etsy's cut of the profits, and see if that number seems reasonable.

>>7470071
Alright, thank you! That makes complete sense. The hats I'm making now were based off of ones that go for $170 (which were simple knit 2x2 ribbed), so I started selling them for $40.

>tfw you just realize you're technically making replicas
At least I'm changing the designs, I guess.

I like them! maybe you could do some uniform style to wear around the neck ( not sure if you use clip on or if they are just hair ribbons). Also I;d love to see more of them with jewels or cabochons in the middle.

When you begin to sell, do not do this with the pictures. It will confuse the buyer what is being sold and what is not. Along with you're not offering a clear picture of the product and the picture is cluttered.

There are betters ways of doing this, but it needs to be minimal and your product needs to be the focus of the picture.

Oh, I know. Part of the reason I haven't started selling yet (in addition to the "not enough inventory" and the "lazy motherfucker" parts) is that I don't have a good camera setup yet. I need to get off my butt and make a lightbox setup so I can get some decent pics. That one was just to show anon some of my books. Thank you though!
