I recommend buying a hide from something like tandy leather. The scraps are from the edge and very thin so they offer little protection or very few armor points. Also, get something untreated you can dye harden and wax.

honestly it's more for show than anything- i'm playing a caster who cares more about his own safety and the safety of his confectionary business than about his ability to cast. actual ability to withstand blows is not my primary concern.

Dying is easy enough, especially vegetable tanned leather, the hard part is not dying everything else, leather dye is incredibly powerful and will stain anything even remotely porous permanently.

That said, arms and amour should always be the last part of a kit.
Only youve gotten shirts, pants, footwear, hats, outerwear and accessories sorted then you can figure out that weapons and armour will fit.

If you really want to harden this stuff, careful planning is advised. The leather will shrink irregularly. So if you want to go for lamellae that are all alike, you should either cut your pieces with a lot of extra material (at least double the size of the finished scale) and finish each one with a belt sander after hardening.
Very much leather goes to waste this way.

Or you harden a really big piece of leather, which needs experience and care and cut out your scales after hardening when the leather still is soft and wet.

Hi OP! I work at a leather store.
As long as the leather is veg tanned/isn't dyed already, you should be good to go.
I'd also suggest getting some badass kitchen scissors, because thats basically what the "leather scissors" my store sells actually are. Just FYI.

and keep in mind that the scraps will vary and won't match in color, so when you dye it it's not going to look the same, but for LARP I think function is more important than aesthetics.

Since this apparently a larp-thread now. I'd asked this before, but lost internet access for a while.

How exactly would one go about making a larp crossbow? What kind of fittings do you need, etc. a tutorial on how to make it would be nice. I have a reasonable bit of experience with woodworking, and a little blacksmithing practice too. And access to a full workshop courtesy of family.

Could I get some help making myself a lovely crossbow to shoot things with?

lol, a lot of people in the larp I attend are professionals with college degrees and/or are ex-military. In my game if you're not physically fit you're gonna get raped, in a manner of speaking. Unfit people only last a game or two tops, because of all the running and combat. We use latex weapons, like calimacil, and we don't pull our blows.

And none of us girls get special treatment
