Ok /cgl/.

I was just wondering. When you people buy these cutesy outfits of TaoBao/Aliexpress/Bodyline.. Like, not lolita outfits, I'm talking about the pleated skirts and OTK socks, or cute non-lolita JSKs, or just Asian fashion in general... Where the heck do you wear it? Just.. Everywhere?

Last year I got dirty looks for wearing tall socks with my skirt. And the skirt was almost down to my knees... I didn't really care, but.. It just made me think. I LOVE some of these outfits I've found off TaoBao, but is it really acceptable to wear overly cutesy and "different" things casually?

You're talking to girls that wear lolita and cosplay out and about. If they can take the stares for that, odds are they're not too uncomfortable in something considerable toned down and cute. (maybe minus the pigtails)

Personally I never get too many a stare when wearing casual j-fashion. If anything I get more compliments. "I like your shoes, love your bag, where did you get that, etc" As long as you look nice and put-together you shouldn't worry too much.

Depends. Some people will hate anything even remotely out of the ordinary and others don't care or will even appreciate it. It differs from country to country, town to town, person to person. My more conservative family members would assume I was prostituting myself if I wore that outfit in your picture whereas my boyfriend and coworkers would think it's super cute as long as I didn't wear it to a formal occasion.

Basically this. I live in the south, so I expected to get lots of, "omg what is she wearing," looks/comments, but it's actually been more, "Oh, I love your outfit! Where did you buy X?"

People are a lot less likely to make snide comments if your outfit is nice, and you carry yourself well. If you're constantly pulling at your clothing, and looking obviously uncomfortable, people will zone in on that, but if you just act like this is your day-to-day clothing, no one will say anything, because, "Oh, they've probably already heard it all before." The only people that really say anything these days are annoying teenagers, and they'll comment about anything out of the ordinary.

I didn't say I thought it was unacceptable just that I see lots of it in room selfies and very little of it in real wear outside cons or such. Also, lots of it looks cute on the petite models in a styled setting or on Asian TV but won't look anywhere near as good styled for everyday in an ordinary setting on an average girl. Sure there's a lot of that in fashion anyway but I think it's even more true in the case of the cute Asian fashion wear. You could get a couple of pieces and give it a spin though, what's the harm?

How terrible did you look that someone said something negative? I wear JFashion every day. I adapt it to how I look (no pigtails because I'm not 10 or in OTT lolita) and I only ever get compliments or ignored. For OP pic, she looks stupid. The hair screams daddy issues, along with the off-the shoulder sweater with nothing underneath (seriously, sweaters go OVER things, they are not shirts). The skirt is waay too short for most daily situations, unless you wore cute, opaque leggings underneath. Mature up the hair, wear a blouse or something under the sweater and some leggings and it'd pass by unnoticed.

There's dressing oddly, and then there's the wedding dress at a pizza shop syndrome. You've got to know what the appropriate level of dressed is, and you have to look right in the clothes. If you look old, that outfit will look freaky and pedophilic. Look like a really young girl? You'll just look stupid and like you can't dress yourself. Or like a prostitute.

By the sounds of your OP, you look far too old for your clothes. A lot of more mature looking people get dirty looks for *daring* not end their lives at 29 or switch to grandma mode.

Back when I was still in highschool or whatever, I'd try wearing thigh highs or whatever cutesy shit to school people were so mortifyling horrible to me and just gave me looks. And if anything, I just looked like your standard Urban Outfitters hipster rat.

I go to art school now and thigh highs and pleated skirts or whatever else odd things are the norm here, so I don't know how I'm going to adjust once I graduate...

Ironically enough, everyone who gave me shit were, in my opinion, some of the worst dressed people ever. Leggings for pants, ugg boots, and and hoodies every single day of the year, and they were giving me shit for thigh high socks?

My uni has a really diverse population full of Asians, so slightly unusual fashion like what you say isn't too uncommon. It's not like all of the overseas students are walking around looking ~~kawaii desu~~ all the time, but there's a lot more variety. That being said I love to wear cutesy stuff IRL and I've never faced real issues. The only time I got lots of strange looks was when I wore bear tights like pic. Thigh highs are one thing, but I can honestly see why wearing bear tights around college would warrant a couple of double-takes.

Honestly I'd be surprised to hear that something as simple as thigh-highs would warrant strong reactions (at least in college) since it's getting popular in the US now (you can find OTKs at your local F21, UO, or AA).

However, then you see people like pastelbat who take selfies in public in full garb and it's like, daaamn. Now that's something that I could see as eliciting a reaction.

Overall, I have no reservations about wearing my cutesy stuff everywhere, but I'm not as OTT as like pastel goth kids.

Really as long as your outfit is well though out and put together well even if it's strange you shouldn't get many dirty looks, usually a lot of people actually come and talk to me and are really nice! I wear "the anime schoolgirl look" when I'm not feeling like a slob (it is college anyways). Voted "human anime character" in high school band. I have been wearing thigh highs and pleated skirts since middle school, never cared, I supposed some may thought it was skanky but I think the catholic schoolgirl stigma attached has faded somewhat. Nowadays I wear the same type of stuff. Oversize sweaters with skirts, poofy pigtails (I have short hair though), rhinestone cat ear headband, etc. I get compliments all the time. I ordered a Bodyline seifuku during the sale and damn right I'm gonna wear it on campus (if it doesn't look hideous).

I don't get all the hate for twintails. There's only a few anons who brought it up in this thread, but in general I've seen it sneered at on /cgl/.
People associate OTK+short skirt with wearing a catholic school girl fetish costume and it sounds like the consensus here is "fuck them, wear your socks." Why the turn around with pigtails? It's literally the same thing, with people assuming that you're doing a school girl fetish thing.
I like pigtails since you can still have your hair down but it's out of your face. The lift of the tails also add a lot of volume and body to your hair, especially if you curl it.

People wear them as shirts all the time. I usually wear a camisole underneath if it's a loose sweater but sweaters don't -need- a shirt underneath.
>The skirt is waay too short for most daily situations, unless you wore cute, opaque leggings underneath.
It's a skirt/bloomers combo. They're basically shorts with a short fake skirt strip on the top so I disagree and they're fine without leggings.
>and you have to look right in the clothes. If you look old, that outfit will look freaky and pedophilic.
I agree on this
>Look like a really young girl? You'll just look stupid and like you can't dress yourself.
No not really in most cases.
The girl in the OP just doesn't look well dressed because she didn't match her boots with her top/scrunchies or bloomers. Also, the white stripes on the bloomers don't match with the top because the top has cream/off white stripes and the bloomers have pure white stripes and it looks off and doesn't match as a result.

Baby steps, anon. Baby baby steps. Maybe a cute oversized sweater/hoodie with a skirt and tights? Tights cover your legs so they don't feel exposed, hoodies are easy if you have them as a tomboy staple (I just ordered a really cute candy themed hoodie off aliexpress. Taobao, ebay, and ali are good if you want to branch out into feminine things), and a skirt UNDER the hoodie/sweater is a good way to get used to wearing skirts and dresses without feeling like it's there all the time and getting self-conscious. These all won't help with feeling insecure in general--that's a barrier you have to break through. You sort of have to live with that feeling for a bit (I've been there).

I also had/have terrible skin. I struggled with cystic acne as a teenager and now have dark scars on my cheeks that make me feel horribly self concious, plus dark circles around my eyes.

Using concealer on darker skin and marks reduces them significantly. Personally, because my marks are super dark, I'll do my primer first then concealer, and if it's not enough the first time, powder on the problem areas, and then another layer of concealer until it's completely covered up. Then I do everything else, foundation, powder again, blush, etc. I don't know if this is common practice because it's hard for me to find tutorials for my specific issues but it does wonders on covering up my dark areas and I haven't had a problem with it creating more acne even though I basically cake on my make up.

Don't give up! Keep experiementing with make up until you find whats right for you, you'll get there soon.

Two routes for outfits:
>mature, classy.
Cute collared shirts and the like. Nothing too infantile, bows are risky. This is basically the only route you should take if you want to come off as "I just wanted twin tails today."

>ultra kawaii
Pedobait. Mini skirts, zettai ryouiki, etc.

They can be more mature-looking if they're teased/curled or just low and loose pigtails. Also this is just my opinion but they make bigger girls look even bigger. These girls I know at my uni don't understand this, it makes them seem like they're trying to compensate.

Can't say much for pigtails except that not enough hair looks really, really bad. And high pigtails look infantile where I live, but it probably varies.

But that anon is right and sweaters, they are a layering item the equivalent of overshirts, sweatshirts and hoodies. Not quite outerwear, but it is a little trashy to wear them without an undershirt except for household/super casual wear or if they have a small neckline. Men can get away with no undershirt with a cashmere sweater, but the OP looks like a cheaper, knitted acrylic blend based on thickness and luster. She should really have some kind of undershirt peaking out, even camisole straps would be cute. But as it is, it's a very large neck gap and a lot of thigh for one outfit. Leaving the scarf on helps, but a little more coverage of one would look better.

And my conservative family would have an absolute heart attack if I walked down the street in a crotch-length frilly skirt, shorts or no. Maybe in big cities that passes okay, but around where I live that's really not appropriate, ever. Like, even stores that carried jeans with holes in the front of the thighs were picketed. Probably different where you live, but the middle-aged and older crowd isn't seeing it like you might.

And just saying, when I went to Vegas I did see a prostitute something like OP pic, only on a bleached-blonde, tanned, haggard old woman body. And her twintails were curled. And all the makeup. The clothes were pretty close, except it was a cotton shirt with sailor collar screen printing, not a sweater, and the boots were simpler with whore heels and a mary-jane peep toe ending.

The vibe in my town is really old-timey. I get less stares in classic lolita than short-shorts and a t-shirt. The religious vibe is kinda strong, not that anyone ever pushed their religion on me, but the moral feelings are all there. Considering most of the town is middle class and our homeless/crime rates are really low, I'd say we're doing fine. And to be fair, it was a trashy boutique that moved in selling high cropped belly-shirts, torn up clothes, etc. The argument is that by having massive tears rather than uniquely cut items, that it looked like it was promoting rape. I get it, since at least one shirt had some slogan like "2 hot 2 keep ur hands 2 ur self" or some other horrible thing running from front to back.

>>7441008
Would you wear a hoodie with no shirt underneath? It's the same kind of clothing item. It's just a little trashy. It's for layering, like vests. You wouldn't wear just a vest, would you? And magazine models aren't exactly known for wearing daily wear in the west. They do pretty much a high-fashion only kind of thing that even look-bookers wouldn't wear out of their house. It's not like vogue does street snaps. (Or do they? I might be horribly out of date.)

I wouldn't condemn anyone for wearing a sweater with no shirt, but it certainly doesn't look fashionable to me. It looks like you're lounging about the house, which is fine. But for a winter-themed outfit (hence the scarf), wouldn't the point be to layer for warmth? It just looks odd and clashy without a shirt of some sort.

Overall Jfashion goes over well here, since it usually takes from the 80's or before. It's tears in clothes, and showing too much leg that cause problems. Asia in general shows far more leg and far less cleavage than the US, and around where I live any cleavage other than on the hottest days of summer looks really out of place. I don't get any stares or rude comments, and if I do, I don't notice them, but that's probably because I try to actively avoid this. I always feel like I'm being silently judged very negatively for the way I dress, among other things. That could be true, or it could just be paranoia, either way I don't really want to know, because I like the way I dress and would rather just be blissfully unaware of any actual negativity.

OP I wear outfits like this every day. School, grocery store, shopping, to my bf's house. Every day I wear shorts or a skirt with high socks (or ankle socks if its hot, of course). Its the only everyday clothes I own now.

I live in a small town full of old white people who give me bad looks for wearing lolita. In this kind of jfashion though Ive only ever gotten compliments, really. In my senior year of highschool I was one of the nominees for best dressed. (I'm sorry if this is coming off as bragging, I just want to let you know that you can dress this way, and you should just be confident!)

Once or twice ive gotten the "cute socks" thing from guys. A few other times some otaku-looking guys hit on me. But for the most part its normal people telling me I look nice and dress nice.

I'd say the key to making it look more "proper" is to always wear a nice blouse, and on cold days, a nice sweater with a blouse under it. I never show my cleavage, ever, and generally I cover my arms all the time. >>7440677 is a good example of keeping it nice and proper. Here you see she has a blouse, a neck tie, and a fashionable coat. Her upper half is completely covered and generally shapeless (not that thats a bad thing, if anything thats a GOOD thing).

>>7439777 OP pic might get stares, but only the side without the scarf. Exposing your collarbone draws attention to the skin there, while the cute scarf look is more modest-looking, even though her thighs are exposed. It makes the difference of dawwww and pedobait.

The whole sweater/hoodie and undershirt thing. The undershirt is to prevent waredrobe malfunctions. That is, breasts and nipples popping out. I figure I should be frank since we're having issues with terminologies.
Here's how we should be looking at this: If the sweater is cut in a way that you cannot tell if someone is wearing an undershirt or not, do what you want! It's not like anyone can tell.
If the sweater is off the shoulder, short, loose-knit, baggy at the neck- wear an undershirt. Because your titties and midriff are going to be exposed. We have these ideas of what is acceptable for tangible reasons. This one is for modesty. Modesty as in covering up the parts of the body we are not supposed to be exposing. If they aren't being exposed, there is no reason to enforce this 'rule'.

I like wearing undershirts because I don't like the feeling of knits and sweatshirts against my skin. If I enjoyed the sensation, I'm sure I'd go without.

I'm not really posting this for your benefit since you seem to suck at even shitposting in an entertaining way but here's some truefacts for sweater peeps:

It's not about bunching, it's the fact that the sweater is going to hug every curve on you with the cami there--which is fine if you want to accentuate your breasts and hips or make even make your breasts look larger. I'll even go so far as to say that if you have little to no breasts or curve and sort of go straight up and down that this doesn't apply to you. A cami won't effect anything.

But the drape that's popular with J and K fash isn't one that clings to those areas, but a sort of bag near the hip, or no bag at all--just the sweater going straight down.

Of course if you've got a blouse that could peek out in a cute way (collar and sleeve), well, there's something a lot better than a cami that you could wear and preserve your high class Why I've Never Heard of the Bronx modesty.

I do not wear OTK and skirts because my legs are too chubby for that, but I do wear a lot of j-fashion, casual Lolita, Otome or just cute Outfits in general.
I get a lot of stares, even though my outfits are not OTT or anything, but everyone dressed in something else than jeans/t-shirt gets a lot of stares. I live in a big city, and we do have a small percentage of alternative fashion, but otherwise it's jeans/t-shirt. I get a lot of stares from old people, but not in a good way... I dont know why, my outfits are not revealing or anything, just a bit different. My own grandma even asked me (very concerned) if my clothes were part of a radical political party or a new religious cult...
Even at Uni I get stares all the time; I study German/English and we have a big Japanese department, still everyone is baffled when someone is dressed in more than T-shirt and Jeans. I often get comments like "Why are you so dressed up?!", "How long did your hair/outfit took you in the morning?!", "Why all the effort?!" On the other hand, I do get some compliments and people generally leave me alone.

In general, I get a lot of stares. I dont mind, it is normal to look at someone who is dressed in an alternative fashion, but some people tend to stare in a really rude way. I just try to ignore it. I took the next one (different line as his), and at the next stop suddenly the man comes inside my car and sits by my side, trying to convince me to go on a date with him or give him my number. They usually look me up and down really rudely or roll their eyes at me. I don't mind, really, as you're not going to please everyone so I don't even bother.

What I have noticed is that whenever I wear pigtails and thigh highs (or those mock thigh high stockings) I get a lot of older men hitting on me. It's an extremely reoccurring thing and it gets really creepy at times but I love cute fashion so much I just deal with it.

But I'm not going to say "JUST WEAR WHATEVER YOU WANT AND FUCK EVERYONE" because it doesn't work like that. Everyone's different. Some people, like myself, feel safe and comfortable in different fashions and some people feel extremely exposed and anxious.

>but is it really acceptable to wear overly cutesy and "different" things casually?
As long as you're keeping to yourself, you should wear whatever you want.

I think its so annoying and rude. Why do you care? Even if I have a reason to be dressed up, it is probably nne of your buisness.

What I hate the most is when I say something polit like "Just for me" or "I like it", people get this... pitiful look in their eyes, and you can see them thinking "Why would you waste your time to get dressed up just for yourself?!" or "Wow. >>7441494
It's kinda hard to explain, but I always see Kfash as being more subdued, and easier to play off in a Western setting, since it tends to just look like your average "pretty, mature" clothing, whereas Jfash is more cutesy and "innocent."

Kfashion also places tons of emphasis on the legs, since Koreans don't like to show their chests/ upper arms, but they'll wear shorts and skirts in the dead of winter. When you look at Kfashion photos, you'll always notice the jeans are straight leg or skinnies, or if they're in skirts/dresses, it's not too often paired with thigh highs, which is common in Jfash. So, with Korean fashion, it's okay to have a really top heavy outfit, paired with plain tights and high heels (another thing- you rarely see Korean style photos where they're wearing flats/platform shoes like you do in Japanese street shots).

With Jfash, it's the overall look and feel of an outfit. Jfash is fond of layers, with two or three layers of tank -> shirt -> sweater not being uncommon at all, and baggy clothing also being popular because it's cute. I guess you could say it's more cluttered, because you'll often see snaps with girls wearing necklaces, bracelets, rings, a large bag that goes with the general theme of the outfit, layers, and big shoes, not even counting the coloured hair, which you never, ever see in Kfash unless it's milk tea brown.

>>7441080 would be more Jfashion, and >>7440677 is more Kfashion, imo.

Oh, and online, the Korean photos always have some kind of filter. That's one of the best giveaways if you're not certain.

I don't mean to insult your deductive reasoning or anything (I don't know what other kind of cues they might have given; you were there, I wasn't). But I only ask this because it's just that in my (albeit limited) experience sometimes people whisper and smile/laugh when they're excited or astonished by something.

I could just as easily imagine them whispering "Look at her! She reminds me of my youth!" or "I wish I was still young enough to pull something like that off!" or "I've never seen a girl her age dressed like that! (positively)"

When you said they looked "devastated" rather than, say, "furious" or "pissed off" or even "ashamed," I immediately thought it's possible you misunderstood.

I have these and the kitty ones but I saw my friend's gf wearing them and she has those super skinny "thinspo" kind of legs if maybe a few lbs shy of thigh gapping.

I can never wear them again I'm so self conscious now of my super thick latina thighs. Even when my legs do thigh gap (I've put on some weight so they don't right now) my thighs are still super thick. I get down to a 22" waist and still have 37" hips. :/

Anyway, I'm 25 and I wear overly cutesy attire, pigtails and bows in hair included. I wore this to meet my crush and I had pigtails in ringlets but it was still an attempt at "toning down"

I usually wear larger sizes and play around with a mori sort of look. The cardigan is wrinkled in the pic but I just snapped it because I don't have a full sized mirror so I was trying on stuff to meet him in. It got washed and ironed before I actually wore it out. I usually wear a cardigan with about everything because I like to be covered up. He said I looked cute but now I'm worried how he'd see me if I was less toned down. This is as normal as my attire gets.

Do you really think the cardigan was a bad idea? I flew out to see him so I wanted pieces I could use again. I wore the dress as a long skirt the next day and buttoned the cardigan to wear as a top.

Girl, I have 21" thighs at their thickest (and a 27" waist by comparison. While not the smallest, the waist/thigh ratio is pretty drastic there anyhow). And obviously I will never have a thigh gap in my life (even at my skinniest I didn't).

But fuck if I let that stop me from wearing my kitty tights.

I usually wear flared or pleated skirts, and my shorts are flared too so optically, my legs look skinnier in comparison. And having thick legs is not so bad, as long as they're not flabby from rampant laziness. Which is me right now so I should really work on that, not only for appearances' sake but also for my health.

Which is why you have people in the stereotypical yoga pants and uggs giggling snottily at someone for wearing something as simple as a skirt and tights.

You know what I don't get about J-Fashion? (Besides the fact that this girl looks like she's 8 years old and that creeps my shit out.)

That looks like shit. The whole concept of it. The sweater is cute, but you say the boots are cheap and they're the most interesting thing on the outfit. The skirt looks like it's from Walmart.

Why is it that Lolitas are huge label queens?

Most of the outfits you guys post up that you pay hundreds to thousands of dollars for I could make not only cheaper/prettier/custom fit, but they'd be better made. And don't go crying "but the prints", because there's tons of custom fabric online that's still cheap and wonderful. (Then again I don't just make costumes, I tailor real garments. But you guys could easily learn to do that?)

I'm just curious why Lolitas don't just learn to sew. It seems like they have solid opinions on what they like and don't like.

A lot of lolitas do sew, but screen printing embroidery is beyond most peoples' reach. A lot of the prints in lolita are really intricate and can't be replicated even by a professional. The price tends to reflect the work done, and most indie brands charge the same as larger ones because the dresses actually cost that much to produce for profit.

I get the feeling that it's mostly thin legged and above average height girls who get away or even get praised for j-fashion. Even the crazier outfits seem like a concious informed fashion choice on them.

Meanwhile I'm 5'1" and while not chubby, I do have a naturally thick build with big breasts, wide hips and round, touching thighs. I feel like even the cutest most innocent taobao stuff automatically becomes scandalous when I put it on. Or looks like it's two sizes too small, even though it fits perfectly. The fact that it's designed with tiny straight frame in mind certainly doesn't help.
I'm short and have a young looking face yet still I feel like a soccer mom in a halloween schoolgirl costume because of my figure. I just want to be kawaii in that bobon21 dress...

At least I still have lolita, hiding my huge thighs and emphasizing waist...

Well first of all the OP image isn't lolita.
And there are a ton of lolitas who sew their own dresses.. maybe you should actually learn about the fashion before criticizing it?

1.) That girl doesn't look 8 years old, there are many normal and healthy body types for adult women. This kind of body type is exceedingly normal for east asians, don't even know why I have to say this.

2.) Can't argue with that. I like it but that's just muh taste.

3.) Not all lolitas are obsessed with burando

4.) There is a huge community for sewing lolita stuff, it's honestly not that much smaller than the lolita community at large. I totally agree about the printed fabric, tho. >>7455567 Has a point about the intricacy of some of the prints, but I've seen some pretty dope prints on spoonflower and whatnot before that are quite intricate.

At least post an example if what you've made if you're going to talk about how awesome your stuff is.
If definitely agree for some dresses, especially sweeter dresses and (some) older school since they seem to be made with thinner and cheaper material. But from what I've seen, there's plenty of well made dresses with intricate details.

Eugh, this. Short, round face, fit into small sizes, but my build just ruins it. There's no nice balance.

I love twintails, they make my thin hair look so much fuller, but I always feel like I give off an unacceptable vibe on normalfags regardless of my youngish face because my body doesn't follow suit.

I make enough per hour that it is cheaper for me to buy clothing than to spend time and money finding/buying fabric and notions, and then hours sewing it, plus most seamstresses have no fucking clue about what looks lolita or they can't construct a garment worth shit, so getting something made becomes a chore. Regarding prints, yes, some custom fabric online is cheap and wonderful, but why would I want to trawl hoping something I love appears? Essentially, buying ready made is the easier option. I fit most sizing, I have brands whose aesthetic I like that regularly release dresses in a print and/or design I want for a price I'm willing to pay. As for quality, if they stand up to the wear I put them through then I don't give a flying fuck, I've got what I want.

Nah. The mindset is 'If everyone one is wearing the same thing as me, it must be good!' Heaven forbid anyone try to put on some real pants though.

I've bought a lot of cutesy stuff off of Taobao, but if I'm at work(office environment), I just mix one piece in with other simpler items. I hardly ever wear entire outfits with all J-fashion.
