What happened? Photos? Stories?

Why was everything canceled or delayed?

>> No.7432496

Even with the delays, I thought it was pretty damn fun.

TBH it was a cluster guck but I still ha fun, I just hate giving John and Denise my money but I couldn't resist Nightmare and Teddyloid. The shows alone were worth it for me. I usually drop $20-50 on shows twice a month anyway so $60 wasn't bad for how's and con

It was pretty fun, though the merchandise was overpriced as expected. I didn't think any of the cosplay was mindblowing.

>> No.7432706

Wasn't thrilled with the costumes... Didn't go to any panels, but plenty of friends were volunteers, so I got to hear all of the stories. But damn, the dealer's room sucked. There was hardly any merch there compared to A-fest or San Japan. Just saying.

I posted this in the other thread, but didn't realize it was it was on autosage.

I had lots of fun but the convention itself was mostly garbage.
Nightmare concert was great, but the crowd was just terrible. No energy and they kept throwing shit on stage.
Didn't go to the meetup because I couldn't make it in time but I did get to hang with friends and had a nice time at the maid cafe.

This was my first con so I have nothing to base it off of, but I had a blast. I never guessed how easy it would be to talk to people in lines and stuff. I was a little pissed about how late everything was starting but most of the things were worth it. There were some really nice cosplays at the contest even though it started like an hour late (especially the witches from Madoka). Nightmare was AMAZING and yeah I guess the crowd didn't have that much energy but I was in the mosh pit area so I had no problem with low energy levels lol. Overall it was a really fun experience for me and I plan on going back next year. Also if the girl with cuts all over the upper part of her arm who was smoking outside sees this, you are a real qt and I want to talk to you :)

Went to the Teddyloid autograph signing and his translator was explaining to us how the con heads weren't treating the guests right. He was just a translator and not a staff and he basically doubled as Teddyloid's bodyguard. Room wasn't set up for Club AM so Teddyloid + co had to do all the set ups themselves from what he explained.

They never explained why everything was delayed or apologized or anything. We picked up badges on day 0 and didn't get a schedule or a map or anything because you can only get them on Friday (or something???).

I went for Teddyloid and Reika and got to see them both so it was okay. Also helped that I had a lot of my friends there, but probably never going to go ever again.

Yea, lines were long and delays were dreadful.

Despite this, I don't think I went home with any harsh feelings about this con. In fact, I enjoyed it a hellava lot better than the bigger, better organized Wizard World New Orleans a few weeks prior.

>Got to go to most of the panels I wanted to go to
>Got some cool stuff from the dealers room
>Eyeshine/Nightmare concert was excellent
>Cosplay was overall decent, nothing particularly horrifying aside from the usual fursuiters
>General mood of the convention was still overall positive, despite the delays.
>Got to hang out with one really cool seagull all weekend

Maybe its because I normally hide my powerlevel in public, but I enjoy cons because of the people I meet and chat with, not the panels I sit through.

>> No.7433578

I came exclusively for lolita events at this convention. What a fucking failure.

The 30 minute fashion show ran over two hours late due to "problems with the convention center" like they've been telling us every year from year one.

The tea party on Saturday was an absolute scam. Ran out of food, began to run out of TEA, and to top it all off we used paper plates and Styrofoam cups. I'm not above those things on a regular day, but at $40 a ticket I expect there to be enough food and some real dishes. I'm upset I didn't go to Sunday, because apparently the food was better.

Member of the Houston comm that were working as staff became very rude and conceited. It's no longer fun to be around them, at least in regards to the convention.

Baby/AatP booth did not have many good items. Anything that was good was snatched up by the fashion show models before other con goers had a chance to look.

All in all, if you were there for lolita-related content, it was a shit show. I can't say about anything else though.

This was passed down the grapevine by two people (I spoke to a friend of one of the models) but apparently while the models had been told that they would have "first dibs" on the dresses they wore in the show if they wanted to purchase them, this was changed at the last minute because- get this, Denise and John purchased half of them out from under them so the models lost that opportunity. I don't know if this is entirely accurate (because wtf do you need with that many dresses?) but if it's true it's a terrible way to repay the young ladies who have traveled repeatedly to rehearse for your show and spent ages promoting your event. It really sounds like being a model is a thankless job that eats up an entire day of your convention, to say nothing of the time you spend preparing before con weekend even arrives.

As far as I understand, the h.Naoto "booth" wasn't an official brand sponsored booth. It was just a standard dealer who had bought up a lot of stock and was reselling it. I saw signs that said "50% OFF" but I don't know what that was referring to - the actual price of the item new, or whatever the reseller had marked it up to. It was a tiny, cramped booth (maybe a half spot?) that could only fit 3 or 4 people at a time and wasn't conducive to browsing. They were also selling other random items brought over in hopes of a quick resale profit (like the Sailor Moon gashapon lockets for $9 a piece, ha). There may have been good stuff in that booth, but I couldn't tell.

Nightmare and Teddyloid are pretty massive draws. A lot of people came out of state just for Nightmare, it's just like when they had Miyavi and the line nearly wrapped around the entire convention center. Normally you only see a concert room's front area fill during a con, but the hall was literally packed. Shit, there were Japanese people here from Japan to see Miyavi.

This is the Matsuri cycle:

Make a lot of promises, throw in a few big names, and make people pay out the ass for everything. Lock down the convention center to make sure everyone pays for a badge.

At this point, you have all handed your money over and they have no reason to keep any of their promises or deliver anything of quality because time and time again, people go back, despite being treated like crap.

The sooner people get a clue and stop paying up, the sooner Houston can get a quality convention that actually functions for something more paying off outstanding debts.

I was with the other three girls in the front of the Teddyloid line around 3:20am that started splitting everyone up for superpass/regular badges once they started coming to the room for autographs. We had tried contacting some kind of staff or something to see what was going to happen since those two lady cops that were really bitchy started trying to boot us all out because "everyone needs to be out by 4am and if you don't get your autograph, that's not my problem, and I don't care, you just need to be out of here." I'm so glad I actually got him to autograph my PSG cd. I would love to have had it personalized, or even have taken a picture with him, but I know we were really rushed with trying to get everyone in and out as fast as possible, since it was already around 3:45am when they started autographs. Does anyone know if everyone in line got in and out? I didn't stick around since I was too tired, but I really hoped so. Also, I didn't really think we should have split the line up for non-Hilton stayers and people staying at the Hilton because suddenly when someone said that they'd go first in front of us that were waiting for hours outside the room, there were far more people lined up than had raised their hand, which meant they lied, and that's sad. I mean I don't really care now, since I got my autograph, but I was a bit peeved when that happened at the time because I didn't think we were going to get in.

Hey, I hope everyone had fun at Lolita Carshow 2014. Like usual, it was an unorganized clusterfuck of the greatest proportions. Costing more than Dragon*Con or Anime Expo, yet having less content than some first year cons, I was pretty fucking disappointed.

Oh, I suppose if you were there to suck Reika's dick or were one of the lolita close personal friends of Denise, I'm sorry, "models" then I guess there was a lot of content, but for us regular people it was shit.

It was difficult finding anything, the panels were total shit and I heard from several people that if you ran a panel you didn't get a comp badge, shit was delayed, and security was tighter than the show down the hall that featured real live actual guns. What's worse though, the hype surrounding the con was fucking ridiculous.

Of course, I can't blame John and Denise too much, they do have a lot of bills to pay and a lot of vacations to take, and a lot of Japanese dick to suck, and they have to get the money from someone other than their friends and family who they've already tapped out.

Maybe next year, instead of going to Hawaii they can spend a couple of bucks on schedules and maps and making sure that their staff has the first fucking clue about anything.

>What happened to the profits from last years convention? Shouldn't at least some of that go to the next year's necessities?
not exactly
the "profits" from last years are actually the owners only paychecks usually.
you'd be amazed how little a huge show like this actually has left over once all the bills are paid.
Don't get me wrong, I'm sure the owners take home a lot, maybe even a combined 6 figure income, but then there's taxes (which they have to pay for themselves AND the business) and all of that has to be payed for the previous year pretty much right before the spending for this year happens.
So again, timing.

It's not a fun thing to have your paycheck for the entire year come in at once, then you have to carefully budget for an entire year.

The con will usually retain enough money to go towards some of the early expenses of the following year, but by and large they collect the vendor money in order to handle all of the pre-con expenses.

A good business breaks even. A great business has profit.

>> No.7435679

>>7435610

That all depends on how the shows finances are handled. As Denise likes to tell everyone that she's the co-CEO of the show, I wouldn't be surprised if she pays John and herself a salary, then any profits the show makes are either given out as a bonus or held in some sort of tax deferment for the next year. It wouldn't be difficult to run a show that operates at a loss for tax purposes but still manages to pay the con chair and whoever else a pretty good amount of money.
