Does anyone have inspiration or ideas for a female Norse-inspired character? Ideally, for summer wear as its mostly for my local renaissance fair. Doesn't have to be completely historical, as I'd also like to incorporate fantasy elements. I just don't feel like any ideas I have are cohesive.

Few Larps reward physical ability over stats and numbers. More over, Many games disallow strikes to the head and hands that are the bread an butter of practical blunt weapon combat.

Foam combat games favor the light-saber-handling rapid tapping of unrealistically light boffers.

Those games that do encourage realism and skill get a ton of cross-gamers who also practice medieval martial arts, and will be equipped and trained to defend against the peasant weapon you have chosen.

Practical WMA/HEMA and SCA combat will enforce the fact that no matter how hard you wank it, a quarterstaff is useless against the even basically armoured.

TL:DR you have the wrong attitude, and will be beaten in game by people who know the rules and limitations better than you.

Any more question Edgy McEdgerson?

As I have told and successfully gotten others to retry and join the SCA, there are a couple of things to keep in mind.

We are a damn good group, but we are not the best, just the biggest. If top-end medieval groups have one douchebag for every 100 people, and your local SCA group has 1000 people, that is 10 douches. We're no worse, just bigger.

Also: You can play with whatever SCA group you want. Don't like your locals? Try your neighboring groups! Find people who you click with, and have fun.

As for finding other groups, try facebook and google. We also have larp threads regularly on /tg/, and you'll note many of our posters take names like "Wyomingfag" or "Londonfag" etc etc. Ask around, and they can give imput!

Though I will warn you, California tends to suck at everything, and be full of douches, no matter what hobby we're talking about.

In general, 98% of the SCA is awesome. That other 2% though... Vocal minority.

Is it a canton or a Barony? A canton is an insipid group, sponsored under a larger barony, but is too remote or does not have enough people to self govern. If your joining has helped tipped the favor in your group becoming autonomous, then congratulations!

>>7401670
Two part answer:

We don't have characters. We're not a story based group. Yes, many people pic historical personas to focus on (I do mid 15thC Italian for example, and all my stuff can be linked to it), but many people are "wear what is comfortable or pretty, do what you want".

Fighting is a major cultural aspect to our game, but the other half is arts and sciences! We study, teach and reproduce practically anything you can think of....

Here is a short list of examples

*Period cooking
*Brewing
*dancing
*botany
*fiber arts (stich, lace, tailoring, weaving, knitting etc)
*glass arts
*metal work (blacksmithing, armouring, jewelry, pewter etc)
*performing (acting, comedia, music, bardic etc)
*Hound coursing
*falconry
*alchemy
*period sign language
*leather work
*period gaming
*period fishing
*Caligraphy and illumination
*painting
*sculpting
*tapestry
*period hunting
*cultural studies...

Pic is a marzipan boars head cake from a hunting themed event.

And most classes are hands on, and either free, or only material cost.

We fight, we feast, we learn, we party. Its valhalla on earth.

*Speak from the chest. Roll you "R"s and talk almost as though your reciting a rehearsed poem. Im taking a note from John Rhys-Davies portrayal of Gimli in LotR. Dwarves are a long lived, and methodical race, who think carefully about all words they say. It would make sense that when they do speak, it is very measured. John Rhys-Davies based it on a toned down Brian Blessed.
*Avoid "tiny drunk Scotsman". Its only funny for the first five minutes, before its annoying.
*Avoid burrowing Jewish sterotype. Its only funny for the first five minutes, before its annoying.

Answer: It depends on the game.

Some are based off LotR. Some are based on Warhammer. Some are straight out of D&D. Some are based from some 1980's paperback snorefest three people read in the 80's. Some are based on a home-grown in game fluff.

The short of it: ASK! Pics related, based off of warhammer elves.

same way you carry a charcoal pencil or hunk of wax: Wrap some kitchen parchment paper around it.

Pic is just some crap I threw together. Small things like these really flesh out a character, and make an event more immersive.

*Simple wooden dice, for gluckhaus and such
*Various SCA coins minted by various groups and rulers for use in gambling for coinage (coins are typically given as "payment" of service, as tokens of appreciation etc, and have no value other than being cool and only being handed out to by various rulers furring their time as club president)
*Cut amber stones for serious betting (these have real-world value)
*Brass Indian bells for use when playing gambling games with new folks. When I play with newcomers to help them enjoy their time, I typically give these bells as prizes for every five coins they would have earned. It gives them something cool to remember the experience, and something to decorate with or pass on.
*Playing cards. I have several historic decks, and you can use a suit deck or tarot deck (the suit deck is just a tarot deck without the major arcana). I have a reproduction of the Visconti tarot from 15thC Italy, as it looks great and classes up the game.

Congratulations! You actively described a huge part of the typical SCA event: The A&S Display/competitions!

While we don't do story lines or such, we do have themed events. For example, the yearly event "Pilgrims Progress" would have a melee based around getting a wagon across the field, would have a feast using 12thC Arab-Euro fusion cuisine and spices as developed durring the crusades, and would have an A&S contest based on items that would be used to travel or seen on pilgrimages.

A hunt themed event would feature a contest focused on hunting related subject matter and materials such as antler and bone, etc.

Even if someone is not competing, we'll have a hall of display tables to show off work, and will include info and documentation. People will leave notebooks in which you can critique or ask questions about the piece or skill, and It is customary to leave a token of appreciation for especially liked pieces. These tokens can be anything from candy, to lampworked glass beads, to small bits of simple jewlery, and a whole manner of things!

TL:DR We have halls at every event JUST to stalk people's crafts, and leave questions and nick-nacks.

>how big of n issue is projeciles?
you can get killed by arrows, bolts, javelins
if you have a shield , you will mostly be safe
if you dont, then you will probably not be on the frontline and archer will mostly not shoot at you, you would be the one flanking them and killing them (unless you have a spear, then you will learn like me to be aware all the time of projectiles and using your buddies of the frontline to cover you)

> how many people use bows etc?
A lower percentage than other weapon but 10 or 15% of 1000 people is still a lot

>i was thinking i would be too big of a target
The bigger you are, the more nervous you make the ennemy, the less able to shoot correctly they will be

>because i wouldnt make a very convincing peasant
Everyone can play a peasant , it's the most basic role you can do and one of the funnest (my secret is i have a peasant costume for when i just want to go watch a show or drink without getting talked to for politicals or religious stuff , people know that when i'm in peasant mode (it doesnt happen often tho) it's the ''Dont disturb me please i dont feel for roleplay'' mode

>getting chainmail to fit would be a bitch by the sounds
Nah , Chainmail is actually one of the best type of armor to ''fit'' proprely, if you buy a used armor not made for you body it will be slack or too tigth , but the chainmail if you know how to distribute the weigth you will be good...also..chainmail look great on everyone if you put a little effort into it

>do people make their own?

I'll first tell you the story of why we were figthing and how bad it all seemed for us

Dulgaron , a province in the south decided to rebel against the tyrany of the sultan , the True faith decided to go on the side of Dulgaron to defend believers against pagans

The sultan in a npc (fuck npc) with almost infinite money, everyone decided to sell their ass to the sultan to crush the rebellion

The true faith stayed true to their principe, the province of Haldorf and The kingdom of Arganne (who almost were in an all out war with each other for geopolitical reasons) became closer to each other , we realised that the two of us together plus the newly formed kingdom of Dulgaron was an awesome force and we made our stand against an army more numerous than us

they were so much more than us
they wanted to invade us and reduce us to silence
We wanted to show them something

Those who fougth by our side all knew they were gonna lose

it was all a matters of ...make them bleed for every inch of terrain , make them see how angry we are

Lowly peasant came to defend their lands, great knigth ,lords and their entourage came to the field to figth , and we all did, we saw our Great and beloved King Hubert of Haldorf , figth knee deep in the mud, side to side to The Regant of Arganne

All these mens were magnificient, we made battle in a place we call the gouffre (the deep) , the place was really muddy and the side too steep to climb, we fougth them (think thermopylae) and fougth them for hours

What they tougth was gonna be an easy battle, was one of the fiercest defense they saw , Lords, Knigth, peasants, womans , They all fougth

For Dulgaron

In the end, the sultanate troops won for our numbers was so much lower, but the war still rage on, and even if other kingdoms want to use the momentum of us being at war overseas to attack us in our back , they know...they know

We will make them figth for every inch

>>7405154
Depends on the group, and there rules. Some allow low-poundage bows with special foam heads on there arrows (this is the norm). Some require NERF bows or throwing a beanbag while holding an unstrung bow (this is crap, and grounds for disregarding a game).

As for low-poundage bows that are typically larp approved, simple PVC bows are easy enough to make. Pic related, and some groups don't require the foam. Youth bows are another good choice as they are cheap, and usually low pound draws.

You have to ask for them to NOT help you!

There is an officer position in most groups known as a chatalaine. This person is the master of newbies.

Most groups have a good selection of loaner gear of all sorts, and there will be people who will offer you there old stuff for free, and help you get the resources and build your own kit.

As I told Ontario and Caer Adamant, we love our new comers, and the giving of tokens and gifts to such folks is an important tradition.

Any particular period or culture you have interest in? Remember, that you don't need to shoehorn yourself in, but its a good reference point to building a cohesive look.

SCA is full contact bro, aside from no grappling. Anything above the knee is fair game, and we don't pull our blows.

As for an SCA helm, you need to get one from a SCA armorer. Collectable sword websites might say that a helm is "SCA ready!" but they are typically too thin and have gaps that are too big. The Armour Archive is the best source for munition-grade ($150 tanks that are not the prettiest, but will keep you safe) and second hand helms.

>forks weren't used in the SCA eras
Patently false. Its like the "Cotton was never in medieval europe" myth. And considering that we go from anything pre 1650AD, I can give many examples, not counting that serving and cooking forks are one of the staples of every culture's kitchen tools.

The Greeks and later, the Romans used forks of bronze
To paraphrase he personal dining fork seems to have had its first widespread use in the Byzantine Empire and spread from there to Italy via trade in the 11th century increasing in popularity through to the Renaissance. The fork as we know it was long considered a Italian notion, and was seen primarily in Italy, Spain and southern Germany until the mid 1600's, but was seen in European high society in the 15thC as a sign of class and wealth.

Picks were just more convenient, cheaper and were also tools for punching holes, marlin-spiking tied cords and many had file cut on them to sharpen the knife they were paired with.

Got $35? Therion Arms has some bone scaled, brass dressed knife and pick sets in stock. I think its stainless too (which is best for food use, and forgivably not period.) http://www.therionarms.com/reenact/therionarms_c1400.html

>>7405604
We can shield check and bash. Grappling is allowed in certain tournaments, but when you have 5000 men fighting at once, its a safety issue.

As for the helm, yes, I have many suggestions, the primary one being the Armour Archive classified and trade section, specifically Hjalmar helms. You can also ask your local group, as some might know someone or have an old helm to sell or trade to a new fighter cheaply. Most of the armourers I know are focused on much more advanced helms, in the $400+ range.

And less protective than quilted defences. Leather armour as we know it is a pretty big misconception, as it was primarily for attaching metal reinforcements too.

A quality, padded gambeson will do you better than any leather. Mount your Armour right to the gambeson, and you're set. They are fairly easy to make, and inexpensive to buy real ones, as long as you know what you're looking for and avoid poly-filled ones that don't cushion and will roast you alive. Get Dressed For Battle (GDFB is a good brand, and kultofathena.com has them cheap.

Dag/bel tend to have rules strictly against SCA helms, as they are too heavy from what I am told.

And most armorers take commissions. Got a pic of the style you want? In general, most SCA helms are either fixed grills, closed faces or hinged faces/grills, as you don't want something that can come off when several hundred people with rattan batons want to beat you.

possibly. id rather have a leather pauldron and bracer vs Gambeson(on the arm whatever you get the point) if you make it right you have blows kind of deflect. not to mention it blunts some blunt hits. also, if you have the right type of hardened leather thats 1/4th an inch thick, theres no way a sword cut is getting though it. though id rather have a gambeson with plate or straight up chain any day. also leather is lighter than steel and less loud. so i guess depending on what your doing it has its uses.

>theres no way a sword cut is getting though it
Nope, but it wont help as much as you think against blunt impact from a baton.

What you really need to understand is that our armour has no in-game effect, It is purely safety equipment. Bare minimums or full plate, we all are expected to fight the same.

As for the maille, it dosn't really do anything by look good and slow you down. I know this for a fact from fighting in it for years. Its great at stopping cuts but its the gambeson under it that absorbs the impact and keeps your squishyness safe. Pic related. Pardon the leather hockey gloves, my gaunts were broke at the time.

>whatever you call the thing that protects the elbow.
A cop.

We have a standard minimum armour requirement. You need kidney, knee, elbow, hand and wrist (either a basket+demi gaunt or a full gaunt), groin, SCA helm, and throat/cervical spine protection.

Yes, the helm is vaguely barbute is design, mind you that making any form of removeable grill will increase the cost greatly, as and making it safe might require changes that would affect the look you want.

I love your enthusiasm, but you really need to go to a few more practices and read a bit more so you can get a better idea of what you need.

>what are the sca rules for armor

This is why I suggest you go to a few more practices.

In theory we are all assumed to be dressed like an 12C Norman man of arms: a stout blow hard enough to injur through the maille or helm, and a mail draped helm to resist cuts etc etc. It will be explained at practice. Obviously, it is up to the honor of both fighters to take blows to the assumed standard. In the fighting culture I grew up in, we fight by the "hit hard, and take what stings" theory.

Like I said before, our armour has no in-game effect, It is purely safety equipment. A thrust to a man in plate or bare chested should be hard enough that it would make both of them notice with no questions.

Anything about the knee and above the wrist is a legal target. This includes the neck and groin, but is considered rude and unchivalrous to target on purpose.

Weapons are classed in two ways: Normal and mass weapons. Spears, swords, daggers and arrows are normal weapons. A stout thrust or chop to the head or body will be a telling blow. A blow to the hip/leg or shoulder/arm will disable that limb, but many of us take a good limb shot as a kill.

Mass weapons are weapons with enough mass to crush and cleave through a man. Axes, maces, hammers, polearms, great weapons. The follow the same rules as normal weapons, but the shoulders and hips are kills, and they would crush your chest or pelvis and you'd go into shock and die. The heads of such weapon simulator we make reflect this, and are typically solid chunks of industrial rubber, or hardened, weighted leather.

Ok lets say you were a SCAdian who has moved cross country. The area you now live in is the home barony of a douchebag you know (in the biblical sense, if you get my meaning). This person will not hesitate to cause issues and possibly escalate to physical fighting due to me having called him out publicly about his shit. He's active and well liked somehow despite being a living stereotype of Jersey Shore level guido enema sack, so skipping over a town isn't going to make a difference. What are my options, should I just give up trying to join this new group?

There's apparently rumors going that I've stalked him and thats why I'm here, that I'm trying purposely to ruin him, etc. Only moved here because I'm dating someone else who is also interested in SCA but in a totally different era/style and hadn't joined yet.

It depends. Most don't affect an accent. Some do. Depends on the culture they are cribbing from. When I play a Southlander (Italian expy) I use a subtle Italian accent. Try not to go over board and go full ITS-A ME! MAH-RIO!. Subtlety creates the feel that you're speaking the common tongue through the mind of your home language.

For elves, I like the thought of a fluid manner of speaking. Soft, sigh like "h"s. Drawn out "s"s and rolled "L"s to make an almost song like way of talking.

For dwarves, speak from the chest.

RevWar, CivWar, used to do SCA, have been tapped to do living history Lenape, Victorian and post WWII (which is really really weird as we actually portray relatives, I'm my own grandma). We're all part of a museum system so whenever they need some set pieces basically we show up. Still not sure how we pulled off the Lenape without someone screaming cultural appropriation, though we're legit (grandma's grandma was full blood, she passed away when my dad was a kid so its not that far back)

Not as uncommon as you think. Most people who do American Revwar up to WWII base it off of family ties, as a matter of pride, memory and access to info.

Hell, back when I worked at Jamestown, two of the senior interpreters where decedents of the original soldiers, and have entire sections of Williamsburg VA that share their last name like roads, parks etc.

Living in Portland OR, at least, not really. Lots of people whom think they have a good LARP, but no actual good ones.

Although about that mermaid tail... Willing to help another girl out with advice on making one? links to good tutorials? I've always wanted to try.

Black facepaint works a treat, seeing someone's bulging eyes peaking out from a black abyss inside their helmet is pretty creepy. Just get a good brand that won't run and lets your skin breath.

it's a game , the goal is to put the troll head into the barrel on the other side of the field

you can kill the enemy with a sword and when he's dead , a healer need to run and grab his sword and give it to a spare player

It's ... okay i guess, i'm not a fan that much
