Anime North Thread
Is it just me or?
>finally announces some guests
> seems to be the same as 2013.....

Talk about cosplay/fashion
Talk about activities
Talk about planning!

>> No.7404553

>>7404474

Pretty much none of the acting guests are from the anime industry, and a lot are repeats from the last couple years. It's getting hard to be excited for AN when it's the same recycled shit every year...

Who the fuck goes to cons for the guests
I go the cosplay you pleb
People who usually for the guests are the casuals non cosplaying plebs

>> No.7404573

>>7404558

No need to be rude, I was just responding to the OP about the guests? They're supposed to be a draw for the convention, but if it's the same old hacks that aren't relevant in the industry anymore, it's not drawing in any new blood to the convention, and it's frankly quite boring.

Also, if I was a casual pleb, I wouldn't be on cgl???

>> No.7404585

>>7404474
They did get Michael Benyaer though, he's definitely new and a good choice considering ReBoot was a Canadian powerhouse in the 90s and it's mostly 90s kids attending AN now. The other announced guests are a little meh to me.

>> No.7404592

Don't really go for the guests...ever. But if they have a decent JGOH then I'd go to a concert if there was one. Unfortunately the last couple years have been super disappointing and I don't even recall who the guests were.

I've never heard of the cosplay duo but reading their little blurb:
>efforts with wigs
their bangs in the attached picture are nast though

>> No.7404622

>>7404585

Mmhmm, I agree. He's the only guest I can see so far that is of any real interest, what with the reboot of ReBoot on the horizon, haha. I guess I can the same strategy with the Sailor Moon guests as well, seeing as it is having it's own reboot this year as well.

On a cosplay note, who else is dreading the inevitable onslaught of Shingekis this year?

>> No.7404625

Is this con worth going to? I've heard about it often but have never been.
I'm from Ottawa so it would be a bit of a trip.

>> No.7404634

>>7404625

AN can be a bit of a mixed bag. If you haven't already gathered from the thread so far, if you're in it for the guests and official con events, don't bother making the trip. But if you plan on coming with a group of your buddies, and cosplay is your thing, then by all means come and try it out! There's tons of outdoor space and the ratio of cosplayers just keeps going up every year, and not too bad quality either.

Eh, well, that might be questionable this year, seeing as there will likely be metric fuck ton of Shingeki, and the there was tons of homostuck last year too.

>> No.7404650

>>7404622
I'm already dreading the over abundance of shingekis. It'll be just as bad if not worse than the amount of SAO last year. I never watched SAO so I was indifferent to those cosplaying it. I did however watch 8 or 9 episodes of Shingeki and it wasn't my thing I just didn't like it. So when people spaz over how great it is it annoys me a bit.

>>7404634
As for Homostucks I'm cosplaying something with a lot of white so my biggest fear is having one touch my cosplay and staining it with that fucking grey paint.

Don't just follow off that list. Go do some researching around the area, there are tons of other hotels that Anime North doesn't list and are cheaper that some of those and of decent distance. We're staying at a hotel not on that list, it's a 5 minute drive away from the con and was $125 a night.

That and AN hardly updates that. My friends called in for most of those hotels that aren't listed as "sold out" back in Nov/Dec and they said they were filled up for the weekend or didn't have the perks AN listed (like some don't have free parking like the website says, shuttle, extra fees, etc.).

To answer your question:
This year is Con-G's final year. They want to go out with a BANG, so they spend big money to invite Dante Basco and Scott McNeil.

ANorth got a bunch of voice actors this year. Including the voice actor og Bob from Reboot.
Plus Scott McNeil has been invited to AN before, so they *DON'T HAVE TO* invite the same guests over and over.

>> No.7413899

>>7413567

Anime North has a *soft* cap of 25,000 people, because ANorth only has a staff of 600 people. They simply cannot handle more than 25,000 people. They simply DO NOT have enough staff.

That's why the AN executives VOTED to have a cap.

Plus, the Toronto Congress Centre is reaching its limit, in terms of amount of people, on Saturday of the con. If too many people are in the Congress Centre, the fire marshall will SHUT THE CON DOWN. So an attendance cap HAS to be in place, so that the stupid fire marshall does not shut the con down.

>> No.7413917

>>7413089
"I wish they understood that some guest would get you more revenue....."

They DO understand that better guests would get more people to come, but get this in your head, AN is going to be SOLD OUT ANYWAY no matter who the guests are. They declared a 25,000-people soft cap. They DO NOT WANT more than 25,000 people. If 30.000 people show up at the door, and the Toronto Congress Centre cannot handle that 30,000 people, the fire marshall will shut the con DOWN. 25,000 people is enough and they DON'T WANT MORE.

Bottom line, it doesn't matter whether ANorth gets excellent guests or shitty guests, full-weekend memberships are going to be sold out anyway!

No, like said above you only have until May 16th to request a transfer. You won't have a valid 2014 ticket if you do and if you don't, you're stuck with it. They're not that stupid to let people go to the con and request a free transfer when it's over.

I usually eat Timmies to be quite honest. I get up at 6 AM and do a coffee/bagel run if I can to avoid the line or pop over to the smaller one. Lines are still hell but tbh what can you do. I'll pick up stuff before, I stay at the Rad and it's got a fridge. It's also good if you grab a 12 inch subway sub and store half for later. Usually I try and make my way over to the Caseys attached to the Travelodge, and Perkins. Totally worth the walk both of them.
Subway had a good idea last year (I think it was last year?) and was selling premade subs outside of the store. (oh and subway is 24 hours awww yeeee)

For drink, I like to make jugs of ice tea at home and bring them in a cooler. Other people in my room bring pop, tea and we all chip in for beer and liquor.
Food-wise, I bring lots of trail mix, bagels, granola bars etc. for bagels, some people bring jam, peanut butter and nutella. Basically, stuff that'll leave no mess in the room or on the outfits.
Sometimes we like to splurge and get an ice cap from Timmies if later on in the evening it's still a little warm.

Are people really that fucking lazy that they have to Harvey's, Timmies, and the Doubletree table?

Just take a walk or a TTC bus and you could reach a restaurant where you can get a decent meal in less than 40 minutes. Or take a bus to the Food Basics and load up on decent healthy food before the con.

I'm a little grateful, too. All the lazy and dumb-as-fuck weeaboos can enjoy preying to the porcelain god all night from eating undercooked burgers and will end up being too sick to attend the con the next day.

My bro's and I are planning on stocking up on those salad packs for North. We always stop by the Food Basics (or whatever the fuck it is nowadays) and it beats having to eat the shit around there. Big salads in them sealed plastic containers. They taste pretty good, just don't use the whole dressing pack. Never mind that it's unhealthy, it's that they taste like shit when you use the whole thing. And like some others in the thread, nuts are pretty good. They're fucking expensive if you don't buy them from a big supermarket, though. If we eat any meat, it's going to be at Tuckers, a tradition among my friends.

My biggest pro-tip though: DRINK FUCKLOADS OF WATER. FUCKLOADS. Combined with a daily shower, you WON'T STINK TO HIGH HELL. Make it a goal to drink water(even just a cup) at every water station you pass. Two cups at least if you've just come from outside. If you have a hotel room, bring 2 24's of water if you're not willing to drink from the bathroom tap. Just make sure you piss before every event/panel.

why so much water, anon?

>> No.7426587

>>7426577
Because a lot of people don't realize what "hydrated" means. "As long as you aren't thirsty" isn't always properly hydrated. From my experience in the con crowd, people think soda and coffee are included in hydration, and they don't drink any water at all. I once took note of what a friend of mine drank for a whole con day, and it was mostly soda. I asked if he thought he was properly hydrated and he said "yeah, I've been drinking lots all day", referring to 4 cans of pepsi and the one time he took a drink of water after feeling hella thirsty in the dealers room. I told him to drink 4 bottles of water minimum(4x500mL=2L) and he was like "That's way too much". For most con goers, it may not be as extreme as this, but I gather it's close.

This will be my 12th year at AN, so I was there when he was.

When you talk to people at cons who've been around as long as I have, you hear things.

Rumors about sleeping with underage fans are thrown around for pretty much every male VA guest ever and should be taken with a grain of salt.
Scotty can have a bit of a raunchy sense of humor (he used to show up in the AN hentai room for a few laughs, and some women claim that he signed their cleavage), so it's no surprise that those kinds of rumors spread.

I can't even count how many rumors I've heard about Vic Mignogna luring fangirls to his hotel room and fucking them.

Because there are so many sexually frustrated fangirls at cons who are sheltered and have the common sense of a baseball, these rumors are somewhat believable and are easy to throw around if you strongly dislike a guest and want to avoid seeing them at cons.

Its okay to do but I wouldnt reccomend it. I find that unless the person is really into lolita, it is just awkward for them and tends to be just that guy in the corner waiting for his girl to be done with it all. Plus people who have a tag along seem to be more likely to isolate themselves instead of mingling, which kind of ruins the point of meeting other people. The tea party is more of an excuse to talk to people and so often after the events planned are done with people will just talk and then take pictures and maybe go eat a meal since tea party food isnt the same. He may be better off doing the last con things instead.

>>7436040
I have gone for quite a few years and never seen that happen, nor of such hate on cgl either. Toronto Lolitas barely get talked about here in general. Im not sure where you got that idea of Timbits, but the hotel wont let you bring outside food so it is impossible for that to be the situation. It has moved to a bigger venue, but still food is based on what the hotel gives out. You can probably find pictures of past years if you care to look. There are always randoms who buy a ticket but most of the people are lolitas who all know eachother.

You really do look like you are trying to start shit with such a negative attitude on something you admit you have no idea of. You also did insult a group of people over rumours you made up while somehow expecting people to tell you things. It could be a skill level and quantity of art to sell jury based pick, but there are 120 spots for the alley and probably at least 500 artists who apply each year (just a guess going off of the number of people who read the results on the announcement thread when table numbers were released). So going through galleries and rating them based on skill with a small staff and expecting people not to complain that the staff is "playing favourites" with 500 different artists can get a little sticky.

It would lead to a better quality of artist alley, but it's a whole lot of extra work and I can see why they don't do it.

Like the fashion itself, the AN lolita tea party has gone through a pretty constant evolution. I've attended the last three and they seem to be getting better each year.

The "timbits and paper cups" is a reference to the 2008 tea party, I'd guess from these pics: http://www.sideshowsito.com/2008/05/cake-injections-tea-party-anime-north-2008-part-2/

For the last few years, the hotel has been doing catering, so it's been proper glasses & plates (nothing fancy, but not plastic either), and a small selection of sandwich quarters, desert squares and fresh fruit. Pic is from last year's tea party. Like any public event, there's a range of style knowledge and skill among the attendees, but everyone's generally pretty nice (and it's not too hard to change seats if you get stuck with somebody obnoxious).

Well for this years: the Raddisson was already fully booked the day after last years AN. The Doubletree wasn't. It's getting to the point where you need to book over a year in advanced if you want the Raddisson, Sheraton or Doubletree.

My friend and I tried to book the Raddisson last year the day after AN ended for this year's AN. They told us it was booked up. Sheraton only had deluxe suites left ($250+ a night). We ended up snagging a room at Doubletree. Would not surprise me if rooms for next year will be sold out before this year's AN. Seems like not many people care enough to wait until the discount rates are available.

From the AN Website:

"Costume and Cosplay

All con goers, whether in costume or street clothes must have opaque fabric covering the areas of the body that would be covered by jockey shorts or bra & panties.

Nudity is not allowed, opaque bodysuits that simulate nudity are not allowed if they are too accurate.

Anyone wearing a costume that is too revealing will be asked to cover up or change.

Cosplayers who plan on wearing revealing costumes should bring a cover with them, for traveling between buildings, sitting in air conditioned rooms, or if they feel uncomfortable for any other reason.

Costume elements that may be disturbing or offensive to others are not allowed in convention space. Anyone wearing such items may be asked to remove or cover them up.

Con goers may be asked to remove fetish costume elements such as chains or handcuffs because of safety concerns for themselves and others."

So, if you're doing KLK, I would bring something to drape over yourself in case you are asked to cover up. If you want to know more specifics though, it might be best to contact the staff at AN.

Oh boy anon, welcome to the world of no monies, haha.

Places to buy from with no worries:

Navito World is great for the One Piece Portrait of Pirates (POP) figures. They also have Nendoroids, scale/statues, and figmas since they're the official Canadian distributor of Goodsmile Company. Their prices are reasonable (for being not online). My only beef is their boxes are usually dented thanks to shitty shipping, but if you don't care about that go for it.

Anime Xtreme will be there as well I'm sure. They're good for everything Navito doesn't have. They carry some Goodsmile stuff as well, sometimes cheaper. They carry a lot of Gundam/Robot kits/Bandai/SH Figuarts/Revoltech. They might bring some of their POP Vinyl toys too I'm sure.

Places to avoid that friends know of for bootlegs:

Conspiracy Comics. My friend says their comics/manga/artbooks are fine, but avoid the figures.

I don't know any booths myself, since names are tough to remember if they're small.

I'm sorry I can't help you more anon. I'd have to check out other booths in person to find out. I'll most likely be taking a quick walk through the Dealers Hall and tweet about any fakes from my figure review/news account.

You can't get a media badge just for being a photographer. You have to have some sort of show to be considered media. Tom Savage has a shitty web-show, and it has been around for several years, so that sadly counts.
If you are not part of a magazine, radio, tv, or web series, you do not qualify for a media bagde. And you really should have looked it up on their site first as it explains all of this

If /cgl/ decided to host an orgy/gangbang/bukakke I would honestly be tempted to attend just to see who would show up.

Tom Savage is known as The Savage Bandit and also as Everage Studios. You can find him on FB, Deviantart and everywhere else. He claims to be a cosplay photographer but uses that as an excuse to fulfill his disgusting festish. He has a rather disturn=bing foot fetish, but only younger girls feet. He promises free cosplay shoots then will make you pose so he can see you feet or ask to prevent like you are stuck in glue. While this does no harm, please remember that this is like porn to him and that's what you are agreeing to if you get a shoot with him. He is a creepy older guy who prays on the younger con goers by pretending to be a photographer. Also his photos are not that great, and he refuses to ever learn new things. STAY AWAY FROM HIM!
