What do you think about the fact that Misako stated that the age range of lolitas in Japan is 20-40 and that she predicts more mature lolita styles in the future? harajuju.net/Topic-Misako-Aoki-The-Interview

I got into lolita when I was 13 and started wearing brand when I was 14. I'm almost 21 and was feeling really old about having been into lolita for 8 years but it's nice being able to actually buy stuff regularly now. I think it doesn't matter how old you are, it's about how you wear your clothes. Although OTT sweet doesn't look very good on anyone unless you have a youthful and cute face, regardless of age. Shelby is about 10 years older than me and looks way better in OTT sweet than I ever would.

I honestly think many are lying, and the rest just won't admit being over 25. I wish the old crowd would just step out and be proud.

Even at 21 when I just started getting into j fashion, I felt too old because of going through magazines like this. It was ridiculous, and I'm glad I got over it, but it took a long time to accept I was already "too old" for the cute clothes I wanted to wear.

That doesn't surprise me at all.

The USA has this strange impression that only "young people" can do certain things. Once you hit the age of 30 you have to stop and somehow be "a mature adult".

Whatever the hell that means.

You can be 50 and still dress EGL, just make it "age appropriate". Style is something that matures with you.

That equals lots of spending money, without parents really being able to stop you support or money-wise. Either way, I don't think it's something to really debate or fuss about since it's very much personal choice.
I think all the unpleasantness about this topic (on both sides) is rather gauche.

This makes tons of sense with Japanese culture. It's not really culturally sound to be immature at any age at all, so the concept of young and rebellious is really toned down or not even there at all. People recapturing themselves at any age though street fashion or cosplay is much more the standard since it's so looked down upon in the first place. Not to mention, anyone under age 20 in Japan is not going to have any time or money to do anything and even if they did parental approval for this sort of thing is non-existent.

I have a friend who is in her early 30s, but because she looks really young, no one thinks twice when she wears sweet Lolita. Exactly

We don't have a lot of older lolitas right now, since lolita wasn't super popular when they were young. Especially not in the western world.
As we age, it's not like we'll hit a point where you magically sprout a velour tracksuit from our skins. People wear aesthetics that they like and make it appropriate for their age.
The old guy with his pants up to his nipples, right? He wears his pants like that because when he was young, pants sat at your natural waist. So when he got a gut, he has to pull it up and over. He doesn't think "I'm an old man therefor I must wear my nipple-pants, it is fate." He has a preferred aesthetic he's trying to recreate.

Girls now 15-27 who dress lolita, that is the aesthetic that they prefer. It only makes sense that they'd keep wearing it and adapt it as they get older.

There was even this granny in a wheelchair fully decked out in AP looking at AP dresses. Of course there must be a tonne of japanese people judging them for their choices too, but with their strong cute culture and politeness they probably don't get harassed about it.
