hey /cgl/ i am in desperate need for some lolita/jfashion coords using real hair, since wigs are pricey and im a poorfag, real hair and wigless tutorials and inspo dump.

Non-lolita here.

I don't understand how you can say you are poor when your entire hobby revolves around buying overly-expensive and frivolous brand name shit.

If you buy indie, offbrand, secondhand and can sew yourself, you can keep your waredrobe pretty cheap.
Plus, the first step to acquiring more money for bigger pieces is to stop buying non-essentials, like wigs.

>> No.7390483

>>7390448
you can always buy a cheaper wig that would look nice with different coords. L-mail has pretty decent wigs for cheap.
you dont need loads of them, having one of a natural color and styling it for each coord would make quite a difference
real hair looks shitty so quickly. sigh

I like using my real hair. I have curls, so the body of it can work to balance out the poof of the skirt. Wigs certainly look great and I'd bet the girls who wear them love their predictability and ease compared to natural hair. No fiddling with humidity and timing your showers and styling with when you're going out
I don't like wearing wigs since those are the times that I get the 'are you in a play?' 'is that a costume?' 'what're you supposed to be?' questions.
I also put a lot of work into my hair, and it brings me pride when it looks good. I like the feeling of my soft curls against my cheek.

Wigs look great, but they certainly aren't required with lolita.

It's 2014, you don't need a wig to go with lolita. I'd even go so far as to say that wigs, even natural ones, are a bit out of style. Only wear a wig if you're going for a very OTT look or if your natural hair is disgusting.

While i personally don't care either way, i suspect that other anons will disagree with that statement... i think its fine to wear a wig or style your own natural hair: I do both because i like change. Wigs haven't gone out of style but nor are they required as >>7390721 said.

Isn't OP trying to learn how to style her hair though? People aren't born with an innate ability for these things. Isn't it a good thing that she wants to know how to do it right rather than settle for limp, lifeless, unstyled hair?
Sure we can nitpick about how OP prioritizes her finances, but everyone can benefit from learning how to style their hair properly and discussing what looks good and what doesn't.

Half the effort in lolita is taking care of your entire appearance and almost 100% of what you're asking for can be found under pinterest hair tutorials for X hair length.

OP, please at least share your hair length and type with us if you really want more detailed help.

Personally, I either straighten my hair and curl my bangs or go all out with curlformers since my hair cannot hold a curling iron curl to save my life. I also have tried wigs but sice I'm at novice level, they end up looking worse than my real hair in combo with headaches during and after the wig wearing event. Another good option is to try hair pieces like the stuff that Prisila offers for extensions and volume for your hair.

What's your haircut like? Any bangs? How tight are your curls (I don't have the curly girl chart on me, but it's a letter then a number)?
Something I like to do is take a shower at night, let it dry a little bit (not bone dry but not dripping down your neck), finger through some styling cream or hair lotion, and braid it up into two tight french braids. When I unbraid my hair in the morning, it really livens up my curls, they're much more uniform, and much tighter! If your hair isn't too slippery with braids, don't tie it off while you're asleep. It'll leave marks in your hair, and the change between braided hair and the straighter ends might be noticeable.

Though there are some very cute hairstyles that look great in street clothes, but just don't work in lolita. There's a lot to consider with how the hair looks with your clothes: Is the coord prim and clean cut or a little more flowy and casual? How much poof and how long is the skirt? What is going to be worn in the hair? How busy is the bodice and neckline? Will there be a bolero/sweater?
You'd want a different style depending on what was going on.

Yup! That's the idea. If you were okay with it, maybe you can see if you have a local salon that has experience with curly hair? They could give you some layers that would liven your curls up so that the hair on top of them doesn't weigh the others down, without becoming a poodle.
Beyond that, how much have you looked into the care, keeping, and styling of curly hair?
If it's frizzy, maybe you need to try out the whole no-shampoo thing, check your conditioner's ingredients to see if it's got the right stuff in it, and have good hair-styling goop. I usually grab an olive oil hair creme or lotion from the black-girl-hair section of the store, but devacurl has their own line of products too. One of their styling cremes smells somewhere between flowers and skittles! It's wonderful.

I wouldn't necessarily say wigs are out of style; there are definitely circumstances in which they are much better than natural hair.

While my hair isn't "disgusting," it's thin and unpredictable. Not to mention that it's dyed pink, which usually goes well with my everyday wear, but my lolita wardrobe is mostly classic and toned down sweet, so having a couple nice brown and blonde wigs has helped me greatly.

I'm glad to help! I didn't even realize I had curly hair until I started learning about this stuff. A friend gave me the Curly Girl Handbook by Lorraine Massey, I was kind of confused but she urged me to try out the methods it details.
My hair looked like pic related (which while she is cute, mine was a bit frizzier and stuck to my scalp) since I would brush my hair out every couple of hours and smoothed it down with hairgel like all hell.
Now I'm a 3A curly type!

Here's some salon finders that use these methods:

I agree. It at LEAST is realling heading this way. There are many girls gaining recognition for using their natural hair, and wigs are so popular and there are so many bad ones that it can make a whole outfit look terrible by picking a bad one.

Long, healthy natural hair is really in-style when it comes to a lot of the casual looks that are also gaining popularity. Yes, it is 2014, and people in the west now have wardrobes and not just a few dresses they wear to meets.

Natural wigs were definitely the trendiest last year, I won't disagree with you there. Natural hair isn't 100% the new "thing", but its getting there, and its because of girls who already have gorgeous hair who don't need wigs. When super gorgeous girls wear their natural hair...well, super gorgeous girls *are* the trendsetters.

If you strongly disagree that the trends aren't going towards natural hair, you just can't see trends coming. I bet you think gothic and classic are *going to be* trendy too. Its pretty much already happened. Trendy people get the trends. Late people get the fads.

Only downside is that it also counts towards pubes. And for some people it could cause breakouts, but I'd say you could lower your mcg dose if that happens.

That's the method I use. The curls come out beautiful and they last days! The cocoons-curls also do it for a more natural look.
I'm also into braids, they are a lifesaver when you're having a bad hair day.

I don't usually like it, since it usually doesn't have a lot of volume to it.
If you've got bangs, layers, and hairspray, maybe.
When I do like straight no-nonsense hair, it's usually because they're wearing a hat to help with their head proportions. Something like bowler-hat sized. I'll see if I can find a picture of what I mean

That's really cute! I've always been unsure of how to style my hair, but I favor keeping my hair completely straight because I think it suits me best. I'm willing to try and experiment though, so I'm thinking about trying rag curls sometime. Thanks!

Also, I'd say that straighter hair works better with coords that have a lighter poof. Sam here seems to keep it lighter and wears more otome. I'll post a picture of her in sweet next.

I have fine, naturally stick straight hair, plus I live in an awfully humid environment. Even if I style my hair into something resembling volume, it falls flat and straight again shortly after I leave the house. I've been happily wearing wigs, but with summer coming I have my concerns. Any tips? I feel like no matter how much product I use I'm doomed.

Yo, weird request, but could I get some idiot-proof hair tutorials? Shit with a lot of detailed steps that could maybe get someone with 0 hair style experience to Competent.

I see all these amazing looking tutorials all the time and I feel like a moron because somewhere down the line it looks like it skips a crucial step or I'm too dumb to figure out an in-between step that's really obvious to most people,

Do you use decent hair spray or any hair setting serums? Also are using heat or no heat? I find if I use heat in my hair, the style goes quickly, though if I do rag curls/papillon curls/foam roller curls, my hair holds the curl for a couple days.

You may need to curl your hair tighter instead of loosely as well so as the style relaxes after an hour or so, it doesn't fall flat - then you can just brush it out with your fingers to loosen it up a bit. You can also try teasing your hair for volume though it is damaging.

no serums, but I use a freezing hair spray, and it doesn't seem to help much. I usually use heat, but haven't tried wet curling methods.

it has to be 100% straight. Otherwise, if youre like me and have somewhat wavy hair but dont want to waste time curling all your hair, curl the very tips and your bangs like how many of the girls in harajuku are doing right now. It looks less low-effort and more trendy.

Curl the hair normally. Make sure all of the curls are going in the same direction. And then comb them together to make 1 giant curl.

Saying you are poor is weak. You didn't need to justify your post, and also you look like a hypocrite (as do most who say they are too poor for xyz.)

I hate how this is a thing now, the "I'm too poor" excuse cosplayers and lolitas throw out all the damn time. If you were actually poor, you wouldn't be buying anything except necessities. (No, not eating out at McDonalds either.) I seriously want to scream in their face when they say "I'm so poor I can't afford ___" especially if they don't/barely work.

Sorry to derail the thread with personal nonsense, but I am at my wit's end with my hair.

It's that annoying kind of fine that is either dry, frizzy, and staticy or limp and greasy. I can only go a day without washing it, and even then if I hide it in a bun. It's almost collarbone length now, which is the longest I've had my hair in over a year.

Is there any method or product I can use to get it smooth and shiny again, or am I stuck with updos and wigs?

Adding to this though, Victorian ladies also used hairpieces to supplement their more intricate hairstyles. This doesn't mean that you shouldn't use your real hair at all (I personally prefer natural hair over wigs), but don't be disappointed if you can't achieve super elaborate hairstyles with it! For the majority of people that's just impossible without a bit of help.
