Not OP but i'll get the ball rolling I guess. youre probably better off posting in a week or two since katsu is coming up

>What fabrics you used
shitty 2 way stretch vinyl. It was so hard to find green in multiple shades.

>How you styled your wig
I threw it in a bag and mistreated it for years
but seriously when i first got it i didnt know how to wig, ive owned it for 3 years and tossed it around and stuff. im amazed it still looks so nice

>Fabrics used
I used sweatshirt fleece for the sweater, cotton twill for the skirt and sailor collar, and then duck canvas for the bag.

>How you styled your wig
I cut it and thinned it out a lot. And then just curled the bottom with a curling iron a little bit and put some hairspray in the bangs. It wasn't hard but I'm not too experienced with cutting wigs without heavy styling so I was happy.

>Techniques used
The special skill of kneeling on my kitchen floor for 5 hours to paint the plaid for the skirt and then crying all over it.
I also drafted the pattern for the sweatshirt but it wasn't that difficult of a thing to make.

This thread seems interesting, so I'll give it a shot. My last cosplay was Jounouchi Katsuya, but I don't have any nice pictures of it plus it's kind of unimpressive. So I'll post the cosplay I finished before that, my color alt of Ky Kiske.

>What fabrics you used
This cosplay was a whole bunch of gabardine, wool, vinyl, and buckles.

>How you styled your wig
I'll start by saying I'm not too happy with how the wig turned out. I did a little cutting and curling, but I really need to add volume to the bang area.

>What techniques or tricks helped in making your props
The prop is a pretty basic wooden sword. My friend (the Sol behind me) cut out the main pieces for me and I assembled it by drilling holes and inserting dowel rods. Costume-wise, this is the first cosplay I've made where I've done the bias tape correctly and I'm fairly proud of that.

The pleats in your skirt looks so clean. Vinyl isn't that hard to work with, especially if you use 4 way stretch, I've grown quite fond of it myself.
>>7364806
That green is a fantastic colour, if online where did you get it? It's always good to have a source of tacky coloured stretch vinyl.

>fabrics you used
Brown is all non-stretch vinyl I had left over from shingeki straps. Top, socks and shorts are cotton lycra (4 way stretch is so much easier to sew than putting in a fly and so much more comfortable). Turned over fabric on boots (which I just realized aren't all that visible in this photo) is broadcloth. Gloves are leather gardening gloves painted with watered down acrylic paint to keep their flexibility.
I think that's it, not a very interesting costume.
>how you styled your wigs
Fringe is a combination on hairspray to keep it tidy and craft glue on the tips of it.
>what techniques
Nothing I can think of that's exciting really. Clips on the top and socks are suspender belt clips from spare belts I never wear. Armband and belt buckle are craft foam covered in 2 way stretch vinyl with a layer of silver spray paint for the base.
>tricks helped in making your props

>What fabrics you used
For the cape/cloak, I used a heavy suiting wool, the shirt is a cotton linen, the vest is a faux suede, and the pants are a drapery fabric I found that I liked the coloring of.

>How you styled your wig
Just sectioned off some of the more prominent spikes and used some got2b spray and wax over it. After I had the more specific spikes down, I mussed it up a little more sporadically. Sadly, the wind often decides to mess it up further.

>What techniques or tricks helped in making your props
The base of the staff is PVC pipe with L connectors that I heated a bit so they would go a little beyond the 90 degree angle they started with. I then cut out a section in the base and inserted a battery pack for the EL wire. I covered the entire thing in loose masking tape and newspaper, crunching and twisting it as I went along, building up some areas to make it look knotted and gnarled. After about 2 rolls of tape, I started the painting process. Several different shades of brown, and then some white and silver paint added with a sponge. Then I drew in some frost "veins" with a silver paint pen. plugged in the EL wire and twisted it all around and finished. Sadly, the light does not often show up well in pictures, but in person, it looks really neat.

Finished this past weekend!

>fabrics used
Expensive 4way stretch metallic gold spandex and an unknown type of 4way stretch lime spandex, plus black spandex for a secondary underleotard.

>wig styling
None. Old arda that has seen better days but I didn't have time to get a new one as most of the costume was made under a time crunch.

>techniques and tricks
I spent oodles of time tailoring my leotards so that my waist was clearly defined without corsetry. Then I wasted a bunch more time repatterning my boots/gloves in order to reduce seams, as metallic spandexs look awful with visible seams down the fronts.
Not a complex cosplay but I like simple, crisp and vibrant costumes.

I'm glad~ I used Jaquard fabric paint. I'd usually stand behind it but I actually had a lot of problems with it for this skirt. The paint started bleeding under the tape and after I let it set for 48 hours and heat pressed it red started to bleed when I started starching the skirt.

Katsumiyo had suggested So Soft fabric paint to me after I complained about it in a thread so that might be a better route to go. Good luck with your Mamimi!

>>7364944
With my Phoenix and my latest version of PG I just used double layered spandex carefully tailored to my figure. I'm cartoonishly curved anyhow so the cinching I get from the spandex is enough to enhance those features.
When I did corset up, I layered the materials inorder to minimize the boning (bought a cheap undershirt from walmart an converted it into an underleotard back then [also helped to hide my black corser/bra under the white dance leotars]). It also helped that I wasn't ace at sewing yet and so nothing was tailored and the leotard fabrics wouldn't actually touch my waist (think of it like my ribs/underbust and hips formed a vertical stretchy fabric bridge over my waist, preventing the fabric from resting on my body/corset so no boning showed through.
....I don't know if that makes any sense. I get these questions on my cospage all the time and I keep meaning to put together an info dump with pics and diagrams but always get side tracked with life and other such nonsense.

>>7364948
Guuurl, I wish we went to the same cons: we could thigh crush the entire event with our combined powers. The black was done with iron on stabilize and then spliced into the green. I left the stabilizer in while I did the gold logo (wunderunder'd then straight stitched the edges) and the back zipper. I wish I'd discovered stabilizer years ago! Makes spandex so much easier.

I made the boots/gloves separate and then pinned them to the suit as I was wearing it so that they've be taught when worn, which is important with spandex.I make sure to attatch the gloves to the sleeves before you attatch the sleeves to the full suit, or you're gonna have a bad time. I top stitched the gloves on and then splices the boots into the gold (probably a better term for that, idk, I just mean that the seams are inside and it looks like one solid piece). Both methods have their pros: gloves have a nicer shape but the topstitching looks a bit sloppy while the boot seam looks flawless but less pointy (though one could probably compensate for either issue, prettysure my problems where due to spacing out).

To anyone else with applique queries: search "crashcult (dot) blogspot applique" for some pretty wonderful explanations. That's were I picked up a lot of multifabric leotard magic.

I kind of made both of the costumes so...

>What fabrics you used
Stretch cotton and fleece for Tiffa, pleather for Garrod. The jacket is fully lined in fleece too.
>How you styled your wig
For Tiffa, I cut and thinned the bangs, then I cut the sides. Then I made it into a low tail and ta-dah. Boring as it seems.
For Garrod, I cut all the back side ( it was quite longer ) and the sideways except for those weird sideburns? Then I styled the bangs with hairspray. I'm not really skilled at styling wigs but it wasn't hard anyways.

As for tecniques and tricks, none. Those were easy to make costumes.

>what fabrics you used

Mainly pleather of various kinds, a soft green cotton fabric and various kinds of leather for belts and boots and pants. Also Smooth-Cast 65D for the armor and a fuckton of zipperstops.

>how you styled your wig

It's actually my real hair - I cut off about 15cm when I first cosplayed as Loki, I was unhappy with my looks anyways, so no problem. I let it grow out though. Also, the hairline was fixed in Photoshop cause I simply didn't have the heart to shave mine - gotta stay sexy etc.

>what techniques or tricks helped in making your props

I made the armor with Smooth-On, as Corroder suggested to me. I'm really really thankful for that tip cause otherwise I might've used epoxy and that would've been all kinds of messy. The muzzle was made the same way and I also made the chains out of layered sintra.

Mother Gothel from Tangled, first worn at ALA 2013.

I used a cheap poly brocade from Fabrics R Us (NorCal kids, you know what I'm talking about- 4 bucks a yard, yeeeaaah!), then splurged on the sleeve lining fabric- cotton/poly brocade. I mostly followed a pattern (can't remember offhand which one), that I altered slightly for sleeve length and neckline.

The wig wasn't really a challenge since it was essentially "open wig bag, put wig on head." Props-wise I had just a basket, but it was sure handy to have somewhere to put all of my shit.

The whole thing was very straightforward. It's not as well fitted as I would have liked, but that's my own fault for not being more careful. It's a ton of fun to wear because I've never cosplayed a villain before.

The tail was the fun part, it's 3 inch pile fur and it stays on with a belt that slips through the darts in the back of the shorts. The butt tails hide the joining and since it's so big it just sort of wags as I walk. I also used colored contacts for the first time.

This is my latest costume that I would categorize closest to "finished"
by no means my best costume and I put it together in about a day

>fabrics
I bought 3 random curtains from goodwill that were the proper colors to make the jacket
bought the pants and took them in/painted them
cape - used old cotton muslin to make a cape then kind of tie-dyed it with a brown dye
>props
nerf gun sanded into oblivion
>other???
shoes - craft foam and worbla scraps painted over some cut up boots
arm armor - EVA foam that I heated/shaped and put craft foam decals on
texturing on arm/jacket - arm spots are worbla scraps made into scale things
fabric painted the top - my biggest regret
>wig
what wig
helmet is also made of heat formed EVA foam and plastic tubing

Ugh that wig is gorgeous. Makeup looks great!

My latest finished costume is a dark eldar wych, from warhammer 40k.

>fabrics used
Shitload of chiffon for the dress, satin coutil for the corset and leather over the top with lots and lots of spikes.

>wig stuff
Lacefront from some random on ebay that was incredibly cheap, but really good, and a 60" full wig converted into a clip on ponytail. I need to look into better ways to manage the weight of it, I was using toupee tape on the lacefront but it still came off and slipped back. So many photos with it falling off :/ I ended up shoving in about twenty bobby pins and that got me through the shoot, but yeah. Pain in the ass.

>armour stuff
Mostly worbla and wonderflex - I like using both for strength. Sintra for the thigh plates and bicep plating, and the flails are foam and worbla for the blades, attached to lengths of chain.

Wig combs are supposed to be awesome. Arda sells the in their accessory page, and you can get them other places. You just sew them on the hairline on the wig. They should do all the grunt work in holding the wig on, so all the tape does is paste the hairline down.

In other actors it usually goes unnoticed with me cause I did not take interest in them in the first place (i'm usually super autistic about this whole personal cult stuff). I was kinda overwhelmed with his way of acting, micromimics and all and somehow stumbled over an interview and developed my first little actor-crush based on his intelligence and good taste. So when the whole UNICEF shit started it was like watching a great mind going to waste and kicked me instantly into grumpy cat mode and then there's the whole fangirls surrounding everything Hiddleston deal that scared me off even more and makes me uber-sceptical about everything involving him.

It's just that it gives me the creeps to see someone being praised for their goodness when the whole action in itself is extraordinarily thoughtless and horribly over the top and then all they tweet about is "UNICEF this, UNICEF that, I'm sure Shakespeare would have sucked humongous charity dick himself, bluhbluhbluh, not pretentious at all" when they actually should be able to see through the shallowness of it all.
And yes, I am indeed a bit butthurt about this. One could say I feel violated by large UNICEF dong barely slicked with Shakespeare's olde spit etc

This is from 2013, but still technically my latest cosplay, because I only make a couple every year, and I'm not done with any of 2014's yet.

Materials are matte cotton-lycra blend, polarfleece (for vest backing), kona and symphony cotton, twill (for boots), etc.

Wig is from Cosplay.com, and took pretty minimal styling (just blow-dried to get her "flip" in the front.

This was the second Senshi I did (I made my friend's Neptune first) so I had the process down pretty well working on mine. Had to lengthen the leotard to fit my long torso, but overall it was surprisingly simple.

Improvements for next year include a new butt bow that doesn't collapse, more snaps to keep things where they belong, and I'm working on her Space Sword.

Just got a preview shot back from Katsucon so here we go!

>What fabrics you used
Upholstery vinyl, vinyl ribbon, and cotton for the waist cincher, knit for the dress, 4 way printed and metallic spandex for the boot covers (which you can't see in this photo)

>How you styled your wig
It's a short wig from Epic Cosplay that I trimmed the bangs with some shears and a razor, then wore a headband underneath with wire to add the spikes (which were just foam with wefts glued to them).

>Techniques or tricks
I used a combination of worbla, craft foam, thicker eva foam, and styrofoam to make all of the armor. The sword was made from insulation foam and pvc pipe, with worbla for the details on the hilt. The big glove is just a hockey glove that I cut off some excess fabric/foam and made a cover for. Googly eyes also worked well as rivets on the glove.

Here are two Cecil cosplays from Night Vale, I'm not sure which one do I like best. The eye obviously needs improvement, I might also add paterns on my arms on the more simple one.

really wish people would use their own imaginations to make up what WTNV characters look like (since that's the whole point of not having descriptions during the podcast) instead of just running with the first popular fanart that was ever produced

let me guess, you're going to add PURPLE TENTACLES to your arms?1 huuurrrrr

how about this instead of blindly following tumblr's hardon. Take the ONE outfit that is described in the show and make it. And try and use your brain and do something different with the stupid makeup. Don't do the third eye, don't do the tattoos (funny, the only reason people even started this is because the actual voiceactor has similar tattoos on his chest, huurrrr so creative!) but maybe, if you're just so damn concerned with getting attention to validate your interests, make a tentacle pendant clutching a third eye and wear it. Carry an old style micro phone and wear a headset, then whenever you see an opportunity to sit down or are next to a flat surface for pictures, put the microphone down and pretend like you're opening the show.

You don't even fucking deserve that much from me and I feel ashamed I cared enough to type it all out.

there's nothing wrong with liking the design, the beef I have is that the whole idea behind the characters was that specifically they did not describe them so that each individual listener could come up with their own ideas. I love this idea, it promotes creativity and imagination and basically each character belongs to You.

But nope, tumblr decided to take

>he is neither tall nor short, he is neither fat nor thin

and turn it into a tall thin attractive guy with white hair and tattoos all over himself, tattoos that the actual voice actor has.

Which is basically a huge bitch slap into the entire idea of the characters and hampers people coming up with their own ideas because if you post something that doesn't fit in with the 'canon fanart' (what an oxymoron) you are berated and abused.

it's just a cop out that is undermining a great idea and irritates me. It also irritates me that people want to run around a con dressed as characters from a show with no description so they can be 'recognized' as if they need an asspat from people. Because, like you said, 'no one will recognize me!' so yeah, it is about attention for you, it's not just about the show.

... and I don't even like the fucking show, I just love the ideas fostered by the presentation, so I support it.

>mfw I'm going to the live show in my state next month and I'm going to have to be surrounded by white haired, third eye painted on their faces, douchenozzles gaying out in public with their 'carlos' counter parts

>> No.7380320

>>7380240
It's a good point of view, I hadn't seen it that way but I still prefer the Cecil the fans have "agreed" on. After a while whenever a group of people is together there will be a sense of unity and there can't be individuality forever and that's also what happened to Cecil, he could have been anything but people chose to imagine him as one thing rather than another. So why go purposefully against the grain, he (the current representation at least) clearly isn't your cup of tea so I get that you'd want something else from the character but if you're perfectly satisfied with how he currently is represented then again I don't see what's wrong.

And even though the creator may have had one intent in creating Cecil or any character that way the execution lead to the current Cecil, we don't naturally go searching for a deeper meaning in things, it's something we are trained to do and it's the same with Cecil, most people (myself included) didn't go deep into the character and simply took what struck them the most.

Lastly I did say that cosplaying otherwise would make the character unrecognizable but that doesn't mean it's for attention. If you're cosplaying as an original or new Cecil it's less easy to "gather around" with other people who also enjoy Night Vale, in this case, since you'll have to re-explain your ideas behind that representation of Cecil while most people would discard it since it doesn't fit the "standard" one.

>> No.7380338

>>7380320
You seem to have missed the point pretty much entirely.

>simply took what struck them the most.
it seems more like the fanbase just took the actual characteristics of the VAs rather than being imaginative.

It's like you people don't know how to read books or something.

>didn't go deep into the character and simply took what struck them the most.

sorry but there is nothing 'deep' about using your imagination when that's what you're supposed to do? And... 'simply took what struck them the most.'? You mean literally how the only description is 'neither short nor tall, neither thin nor fat'? Sorry that's kind of funny to me.

There's nothing soul searching or 'deep' about what I said or what the creator has said behind not describing the characters to give the listeners the ability to imagine them in their own way. If you mean it's deep to use your imagination instead of going with the most popular fan-art... ok, lol.

>since you'll have to re-explain your ideas behind that representation of Cecil while most people would discard it since it doesn't fit the "standard" one.

Yeah see, why would you want to hang around people who do that?

Of course, these are the same people who only care that that's a gay couple in the show, which is hilarious to me

>Gay people are just people! Treat them like people! They shouldn't be a focal point or a 'unique' part of a story, they are just like any other couple!
>OMG GAYS ON A PODCAST OMG OMGOMGGG THEY ARE GAAAAAAAAYYYYYY I LOVE THEM GAAAAAAAAYYY

Anyway, I guess you kind of got the gist of what I was saying, but at the same time I think you missed it. It's fine, I've given you the ideas I had, hopefully you roll with the date outfit and the microphone and headset and can stand out a little, since that's what you want.

>> No.7380413

>>7380365
Deep perhaps wasn't the best word but you got the point of it, if you want to show something that hasn't been described or that isn't developped physically you're going to either go with what the fans have etasblished or try and extract from what you feel from the character. And then we get to that

>why would you want to hang around people who do that?
Because I am one of them probably, or at least don't dislike their company.

>Anyway, I guess you kind of got the gist of what I was saying, but at the same time I think you missed it.
No I have gotten it, good perspective but I simply don't agree fully with it. I think it's best here to side with the fans rather than the creator, it's all.

Interrupting the Night vale drama to post my most recent costume from katsucon this past weekend.
Wish my face wasn't so derpy in this shot but oh well. I think it shows my legs the best. Lots of details missing but, yet again, I messed around until I was so overwhelmed with finishing the important parts I didn't have time for all the Sakizou level details.
>fabric
I think it was a black gabardine? I bought it years ago for a Yuuko Ichihara cosplay I never finished. Plus some cheap Halloween fabric for the spider web bits
>wig
Two wigs hacked to pieces and glued to a wire and paper mâché structure. It got really heavy so I'll have to fix that before the next time I wear it.

The biggest trouble was making it lightweight. Even with every corner I cut, the two back legs ended up being so heavy that they wouldn't stay in the harness at the right angle.

Hey kids~ I tend not to usually ever come in here but this seems kind of like a fun thread, and I'm a big sucker for seeing what people have used for their cosplays (and extra bonus if it's something I've never heard of before).

Katsucon 2014 I nervously/excitedly got to debut my Fiora cosplay from League of Legends~
SOMANYNEWTHINGS

-first time using worbla and insulation foam
-first time using earth magnets
-first time sewing wefts/bangs into a wig
-first time making a prop (in a day and a half, 0/10 would never recommend)

Clothing is made of vinyl (not upholstery) and satin (which made me cringe at first but I had to get over it for the look it required).
Definitely had to purchase Kamui's armor making tutorial to help give me an idea of how to go about this project, as I've never made so much armor before-- let alone with a new material.

If you guys have any questions about how I went about anything, feel free to ask~!

start with a glue stick, literally an elmers glue stick, cover up your whole brow but make sure that it doesn t get tacky/gummy- try to keep the stick as flat as you can on the brow i usually do 3-5 swipes. color in the whole brow with white eyeliner- make it as white as possible, take eyeshadow with an angle brush and just put as much pigment as you can in there-

i m usually really messy about it so have wipes with me to clean up- the shadow is usually messy.

also it s really important that your brows are waxed/clean.

Just me trying on a wig lol, hence "unrelated"

I posted it to show how to miter corners, not necessarily to show how to attach bias tape properly. But yes, you are correct.

Wow anon, you're sure sandy.
One of the girls wasn't even attention whoring; she just showed her face to some anon, she didn't boast about how cute or totally amazing she was and even politely saged.
No idea who the other anon is though, although pretty sure it's >>7365540. She's just posting a makeup test, and I don't see anything wrong with it. (Although >>7386464 seems butthurt as hell, OP ain't gonna look through every single picture to triple check that it's not cosplay).
Honestly why the fuck do you care so much, it's not a big deal. 4/10 made me post.

That wasn't OP though just someone who decided to throw shade. Not buttmad, just don't wanna deal with that crap, sorry if I sounded annoyed.

Not sure if this is the right thread, but I was wondering if I could pull of cosplaying as Kiritsugu Emiya

Not the right thread but you probably could, as long as you're not like the 90% of male cosplayers who pretend they don't need a wig or makeup and then run around looking like shit.
