No surprise there. Katsucon is notorious for taking their sweet time with the schedule.

Odd because in my experiences with Katsu over the years, the primary draw for folks is the cosplay. All else is pretty much ancillary, and therefore on the off chance you DO want to go to a panel/showing/other event, you want to know about it simply to schedule shoots around it.

Aha, try not to judge me to harshly. It was supposed to be a sort of "Hetalia history" panel that was meant to be funny and interactive.

But since we've been pushed to late night I told my panelists to scrap that and go with a "late night version" so they'll instead be discussing urban legends, haunted hotspots, serial killers, etc from their countries. I figure at least that way if the panelist themselves are boring & unable to crack a joke or engage the audience, the material itself will be interesting.

I'm sure I'll only have like 10 people in the audience so I'm probably gonna order pizza for everyone too, I dunno

Finishing the bodysuit (it's basically a footie pajama pattern so at least it will be comfy) and waiting for coscom to post my passioned plea for the Marvel shoot to move to the place we went to last year. I'm perfectly willing to be the yelling organizer, but I'd prefer not straining my voice in the atrium near the fountains as the sun begins to set....

At last year's Katsucon, I went to a panel that was supposed to be about the history of the dissemination of anime in the US. We got there, and after about 5 minutes of waiting, it seemed that all the panelists had totally bailed out and found something better to do -- they never showed up.

So then this old black weaboo, probably at least 40, maybe 50 who is con staff just gets up there and starts talking about his experience with the early days of anime in the US, conventions, and fan interaction with creators and VA's. He told us of the days when you shared VHS tapes of stuff between fellow anime fans, and how it was fringe culture when compared to existing fringe culture. And he did it all off the cuff, just on a whim.

It was one of the best panels I have ever been to. I hoe I see that guy again, because he was fucking cool. Did anybody else attend this panel?

Anyone seen these more well known cosplayers' lineups yet? Which costumes are we going to see over and over again in about 10 different videographers this year?

Well looks like I'll be going alone this year. Not entirely alone, I'll be with my father (we go to every con together, its tradition),but I probably won't be hanging out with him all weekend.
I'll just be doing a craptastic Poker Face Gumi & maybe wear lolita, or just bum in my cow kigu. I need to prepare more next year.

Katsucon used to be the best among the three smaller cons in the DC area when it came to guests. Now AUSA is clearly kicking ass. T-mode is excusable due to its size and I would never expect anything big out of them.

I mean I love Katsu for giving me the chance to meet Stan Sakai two years ago, bu literally no one was at his signing except me, so I assume I was the only one who cared. Would it hurt to not bring guests attendees don't generally care about? I mean, for fuck's sake, what's the point in bringing Gir's VA again for the third time in a row? The Ayres brothers I understand especially as one is a DJ so they can pay less for getting an extra one. They get a pass since they're good at what they do in the voice booth, and they're sort of a tradition.

Seriously, unless they pull a miracle out of their asses and get at least 3 big names to suddenly show up I will not pre-register again next year unless they have a very specific guest put up before pre-reg... and even then I might not just in case they cancel.

Just disappointed.

At least the cosplay will be good.

IIRC a lot of the senior staff of Katsucon rolled out around 2007-09. So now you have a lot of people in top positions that don't really know what the fuck they're doing.

This con is pretty much running on its own inertia at this point.

Some people who use it can become paranoid, but you have to use it literally every day, and even then it's not too likely. I know a guy that smokes it near-constantly to cope with his anxiety (not saying that it's a good thing that he does that, but the pot keeps him more sane than his body does on its own).

Anyway, kids, long story short, if you're gonna do drugs, pot is the closest you can really get to a no-strings-attached high. Honestly, I would recommend it over alcohol, as it isn't physically addictive and won't make you violent.

After I saw the one last year, I figured they might do another. So a few months ago, I asked Katsu staff about the contest. They said they would email somebody and get back to me but that never happened. I only got confirmation when they posted about it only. I checked every freaking week for information on it.

But now that it's happening for sure, I have it packed away in a foam-lined box shaped to the model's contours so it can be safely transported to the con.

What's this cons/hotels dress code?

Are shirtless cosplays allowed? Or is this a nipple pasty type con?

I'm going to check to see if there are any glaring empty spaces in the schedule, and if not I can only assume that we were cheated and lied to in regards to having a more robust guest list than originally thought.

Because seriously, how can you fuck up so badly on the 20th anniversary? If it was an attempt at celebrating Katsucon's past, you can still fucking do that without completely shafting guests people care about- see Otakon. I know that for me, Epcar's the only one I care about, discounting his wife and the Ayres who I have nothing to have them sign since the former only has one thing I know her from and got that signed already, and the latter because they're there EVERY YEAR.

So, I compiled this chart from the ECMWF snowfall models... It doesn't look like there's any good time to drive to Katsu on Thursday at all. Maybe late at night. Heaviest snowfall from 7-10 and 1-4, if I'm interpreting the models correctly.

Snow in the DC-Baltimore area is expected to start around 9pm-11pm tonight and carry on through until 11pm Thursday night. Chance that there is a mix of rain/snow along the I-95 corridor during the day on Thursday reducing accumulation totals.

So to summarize, you might be having a very long Thursday night into Friday morning if you intend to travel down. And if you're coming from the south you probably will be waiting just as long.

I haven't seen official statements addressing the possible weather fuckery but from their website the refund policy you had to request it through Eventbrite before Feb 1. Those refunds would be processed and finished 1-3 months after the on. Plus it sounds like you might not get what you paid "Refunds are made less any fees assessed by our payment processor."

I don't know how things went back in 2010 Snowmageddon year, but did people get their refunds or did Katsucon change anything? Maybe another anon can help. I attended so obviously I didn't need to know about it. I do know that they didn't have their actual badges and books in at the time of the con so you had to go back and swap papers to get the real ones... however, that storm that year hit well before the con and the snow was still there.

I had to withdraw from the AA because I didn't have enough time after my last con to restock. Not used to doing so many in a row. But out of the $160 table fee they could only refund me $80 and that will apparently happen after the con. I went to something like that last year...

And holy shit, man. It turned into a giant fest of people complaining about other people that kept escalating to the point where I thought a few fights were going to break out. There was a minimum of 2 belligerent drunks in the audience including one guy who fell asleep sitting upright in his chair because of how wasted he was.

The weirdest thing was that this one dude ranted about how he was sick and tired of bronies (mainly from rule 34 stuff and how he thought that kids might find it), and this other guy ranted about how people are being discriminatory against bronies. Long story short, they got into a discussion together for most of the panel, which got a bit heated and loud at some point. By the end of the panel, those two and worked out their differences and had earned each others respect. Go figure.

Only half of it is actually the convention. The snow fucked me over big time. I had to struggle to get here and couldn't bring cosplay. When I finally arrived I was met with a registration line from hell. My other complaints are pretty minor but on top of everything else didn't help. I really feel like tomorrow will be better though so take that as you will.

Finally managed to find her after I'd given up hope on seeing her again. I'm not sure if the picture turned out too well (I didn't bother checking if it there was anything bad about it besides if it was blurry or not) but at least I got to tell her I thought she did a wonderful job on the costume- and she really did, the craftmanship was absolutely incredible.. I'll post the picture (along with the others I took today/I'll take Saturday and Sunday) when the con's over.

It really wasn't worth it to pre-reg this year at all. I've no doubt that for the morning and early afternoon both lines lasted as long and then as I was leaving things just ballooned for pre-reg. It was really odd. After dinner, I kept running into cosplays I never thought I'd see. There was Ryoko from Tenchi Muyo that especially stood out. I mean I realize it's a particularly popular thing to cosplay just drawing from that show, but it still warms my heart to see people still do love it enough to cosplay from it.

The preregistration line was only a 10 minute wait for me.

I got here around 8:30pm.

So I really apologize if I snapped at anyone. Con guests seem more inconsiderate this year. I can't believe the amount of people touching random parts of my body or cosplay. After a while I just got fed up with people pretty much knocking my spider legs out of my harness because they wanted to rub their hands on it, or the deadpools photobombing or people not even trying to move when I feel like I'm gonna pass out.
