This is a LARP-thread, and you are free to discuss everything related to it.

You can see the picture, and related to it, i would like to discuss Landsknechts and renaissance. Some questions:

Marching and pike formations:

Do you have enough friends to practice marching in formation and how to operate in pike formations. What sort of online resources are there for these sorts of activities?

Instruments:
Related to marching. Where do you buy/how do you manufacture your period drums and well, what sort of other instruments are there for these sort of things?

Armour:

Basically, if i want myself a Burgonet is a private order from a blacksmith pretty much the only choice?

I would also like to see more like that picture there. Clear pictures of renaissance-armour.

Sorry i can't offer any better context for this. But, very good colour painting where you can see all the details in the costumes clearly. Very nice for adding features and touches to your costume.

This is also pretty interesting reading. I think it should be pretty easily available online.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_re_metallica

Sure, it's a book about mining, but it's renaissance-mining. I'm not quite sure which editions have illustrations but the ones that have, check it out. Lots of good examples of average clothing your average worked would've used.

It's interesting because you can see slight slashing on the knees really often. Guess the Reisläufer/Landsknecht-slashing of clothes became sort of a trend that eventually found itself in normal people's wardrobe too. (naturally to a lessened effect of course)

although we barely have enough men for one rotte right now...

although while I can't help with musical insturments as I'm very bad with them I can say that apart from drums I'm pretty sure there were flutes

about the burgonet: yes, if you want a good one. And the helemt is one of the most important part of your armor

Landsknecht did not invent slashing (the Swiss probably did, a century before) but it was a Europe-wide trend. Knechts just did it at a level nobody else really achieved.

fun fact: LK recruitment was just like that. They went to a town (or several one) and said: hey guys we are hiring for this regiment. And people came. There was a piss easy "physical test" you have to jump something I think to show that you are in fact have a working body to some degree and then you were in. Your pay of course depends on what kind of gear you brought with you. But no training was necessary for signing up, training came after it

On the other hand there were a lot of casualties...
Still they were feared and even won against swiss pike formations more than once. That was basically a very important thing as before that swiss pike formations were something that most people considered the best thing ever and nearly invincible

Grutte Pier (Pier Gerlofs Donia) got his wife raped&killed and his estate and the village church burnt down by Landsknechte. As a form of vengeance, he rebelled against the Habsburgs, become a pirate fleet commander and raped, pillaged and burned stuff so efficiently, he got named Cross of the Dutchmen (got the nickname by mass-murdering the crews of 28 captured Dutch ships). The Landsknecht band triggering this was called (one of several) the Black Band, and Pier called his army Black Band From Arum. History is beautiful.

With the Crusader Outfit® , you will have all the luxury to smash on heretics and xenos head

Enjoy your newfound fun with friend around a beer in the honor of Saint-Drunkard but beware, white will be forever stained by wine

For the belt , i will try to explain it but you really need to see someone do it... its hard to explain

1 - First you put the belt on you (d-uh...i know)
2 - you pass one end into the metal ring
3- you put this end BEHIND the belt
4- you take the end of the belt wich is behind , and you put it in the loop formed by puting the end behind the belt
5- you pull down to the desired thigthness
6- imagine ou are putting a tie on , it's the same thing

The Borgias and Rome are damn good. The Tudors is ok.

I am very dissapointed in History Channel's The Vikings. what kills me is that they spent more money making it inauthentic than they would have to make the same show, with period correct clothing and armour!

History Channel purposefully ditched all the rich colors and technology that the various Nordic trading cultures were known for, and made it more "dirty barbarian" because they thought your average viewer wasn't ready to see vikings who enjoyed colorful clothing, wore some of the heaviest armour of the period, and had high standards of hygiene.

>>7345025
That is your problem: You're looking at the sex-sells leading lady. Look at Cathrine, Anne of Cleves and the secondary characters.

Also, curious question: Am I the only one who found Joss Stone (who played Anne of Cleves, and was supposed to be plain and not quite pretty) much more attractive than Natalie Dormer (Anne "sexpot" Boleyn)?

Nope, I'd argue Anne of Cleves is just as bad. I know it's normal for the "sexy" and main female characters in anything to be more modernized (hairstyles, missing shifts etc.) than the secondary ones, but some of the choices are just egregious. I'll even excuse the weird headwear stand-in for "Anne of Cleves is always wearing some weird hat thing". I mean, what is going on with the fabric choices here. I think the heard-dress is a attempt to pretty up the awesomely bizarre pudding like german caps that some women wore. pic related.

I like mine less the special snowflake types and more the inherently flawed types that just have to get by like everyone else. One of the things that drew me to Elfquest a looong time ago was that their species was basically the pinnacle of psychic technology and very literally got beaten down into the dirt on first contact with humanity, and now their descendants are barely conscious of their own origin and struggle to survive just like humans do. The divergent evolutions of each elf tribe are also intriguing, how some managed to maintain at least fragments of their old might while others lost it completely.

Used it to make the faunt hunts more challenging for for girls who wanted more. The fae folk kidnap children from their cribs, to be raised amongst them. Sometimes they leave a baby fae or a wooden facsimiles behind known as a "fetch".

It is a life-sized baby doll that they used to give out in highschool home-ec classes. It has basic sensors, so that too much jostling or too loud a noise will cause it to cry for a random length of time or until "consoled" through a suitable rhythemic rocking motions. It also needs head support or its "neck will break", and it will emit a loud beeping and shut down (I disabled the feeding and program).

I got it at a thrift shop, and found the computer software online.

For fay folk I really think that the faeries/elves from the alternative history novel: "Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell" are excellent. Scary, otherworldly, and completely devoid of human type morals and empathy.

Too bad the book was a bit of a rambling mess though.

>Its still very nice work though, and you have great blocking/shaping! Some brass buckles would make them really pop though (Kultofathena.com has a bunch of small medieval buckles for cheap)

Thanks.

The shape comes naturally, the leather is extremely thick and stiff. I had to cut and grind deep furrows on the inside where the leather folds to prevent it from cracking (what it did in some places anyway, the leather is pretty old).

What you mean with the brass buckles? I planned the pouches with the unhistorical magazine pouch mechanism (don't know the exact english term for it). Adding belt straps and buckles is impossible at this point I think.

I am leather armour guy by the way :-D

Still thinking about some character story points atm.
I am integrated in a mercenary band of some 15 people and as they said they want a scout, so I will be the scout (sans horse....so more of a fantasy scout ;-) )

I do not want a "dramatic, special snowflake" background story. So I thought of something along the line of a regular bloke without any title or riches to his name and not enough money to pay for learning a trade. So I guess it is some years of small-time poaching and vagrancy which can explain being able to move silently and using a bow or a knife. How do I explain being able to wield "bigger" weapons? I will add a small falchion/malchus and a small round shield to my kit at some time...

I can't be too "green" because I am a "late starter" concerning larp. At 29, I can't be some green kid just away from home. So I am unsure how to treat the time between becoming self reliant and joing the band.

As a general note: Concerning the character, his abilities and equipment I want to keep to the stuff I know how to do and use IRL and I want to keep it as basic as possible, so no being saved and trained by mountain drow ninja, no tragic past, flashy titles or flashy equipment and clothing.

>> No.7347010

>>7346994

But you also don't want the black to become the dominant color in a scheme made of the colors you listed. It'll overwhelm everything but the forest. A medium brown won't intrude on the other colors present. The tooling might fade into it a bit, but given what you seem to be going for is a woodlands scheme, you don't want a lot of shiny bling drawing attention anyway.

Maybe you were the old huntsmaster of your town, and on a hunting expedition either your party was unexpectedly ambushed or the hunt went bad and someone important got killed. You managed to survive it, but were blamed for things going south and your Burgermeister/Mayor/Jarl/whatever banished you. You'd been wandering from point of civilization to point of civilization ever since, but not staying longer than a month before moving on, so you've been roughing it ever since. This merc band was blundering through the badlands, half-starved and having problems, when you came across them, and since they obviously don't know the lay of the land like you do, you offered to guide them until they reached wherever it is they're going. You got them fed and have thus ingratiated yourself to them and they've allowed you into their ranks. They don't know that you're an exile and they haven't asked.

THink of the fact that when you oil your leather, it will get much darker. So be light on colouring. I did not colour any of my leather scales for example and after applying some oil they are all middle brown in colour (though the cooking did darken some scales too beforehands).

Do yourself the favour and use test pieces for the colours, and apply oil on them too afterwards.

You can also dilute the leather stain to account for the fact that oil will additionally darken the leather.

Good recommendation. But I think I will be okay on that front. The role suits me well anyway. Like I said - I keep to the stuff I know how to do. I am quite proficient with the sneakyness. Need for a scout was not the only reason I was asked to do it, but because I fit the bill physically and regarding past experience.

Still think of what to carry in my pockets. Flint, tinder and striker are a given. Will make a wax-board for being able to draw maps and stuff. whetstone. Bandages. Some armour repair stuff. Some water and Jerky. Do you have good additional ideas?

>Good recommendation. But I think I will be okay on that front. The role suits me well anyway.

Don't be too cocky there bro. Unless you've actually done it with intent (hunting, military scouting roles) you need to understand that there is a difference between actually being able to track, and pretending to. This is a skill that you can't roleplay.

>Flint, tinder and striker are a given.
Do you have intent, skill and need to use them? Unless you're making fires on the go, I would leave that at camp. If its for fluff reasons, that is acceptable.

>Will make a wax-board for being able to draw maps and stuff.
Not really the best choice. In hot weather, it will run. In cold weather, it will crack and fall off the board. Use a paper/partchment journal and a charcoal crayon. If the journal has a treated cloth or leather cover, it will survive the elements better.

>whetstone.
>Bandages.
>Some armour repair stuff.
See the line about intent, skill and need in the fire set post. You're a scout, not a walking requisitions tent. You're carrying too much stuff unrelated to your job, that has no use when you're scouting. If the bandages are for IRL first aid, you're better off getting a mundane hiker's first aid kit, and hiding it in a pouch.

>Some water and Jerky.
Best choice I've seen so far.

>Do you have good additional ideas?
-A compass
-small strips of cloth to mark trails when you're trail blazing (you blaze the trail for others to follow)
-Jute/hemp string
-small cheap brass bells, packed tightly into cotton or wool batting to eliminate the ringing. (String these on the string above to make subtle trip-wire warnings if you're staking out and observing)
-a good hood. I suggest wool.

yes, I can make it and use it as well. But to be honest it is purely for fluff reasons.

They wax boards were used in my area very very much in medieval times while paper was expensive. I see no real problem with temperature.

The bandages will as well be purely for fluff reasons concerning some self reliance and the thought that it would be nice to at least patch up a small scratch by oneself.

Repair stuff means only 4 or 5 replacement scales and string (here is the string you mentioned) I used to fix them, I did not mean anything fancy, big or heavy.

A compass would be nice of course, but too hightech and steampunky for my liking as most stuff around here is more northern and european-medieval in theme.

The cloth scraps are a great Idea! WIll implement that. The bells as well. Really like these two!

I already have a very good loden cloak. but something shorter and less cluttery would be more practical in some circumstances, I think I will have to make it myself as most stuff I see is on the "more fantasy - less practical" side.

Well, technically when scouting I could ditch armor and weapons anyway because engaging the enemy is not part of the job, you are less weighed down by shit and possibly you get away with some story if caught without weapons, military attire and so on.

I will spend most time with my comrades though and less time hanging around in the woods on my own, that are small and overcrowded anyway at an event.

A soldier, even more so a mercenary who is unable to do minor repairs to his armor or polish out some nicks in his blade is a pretty stupid idea in my head. So do not get too much carried away with only lurking in the undergrowth and think more of personal items that you would generally have with you - be it at your camp or in your pockets (that you could leave at camp, too if you wanted).

Weapons are expensive. And heavy. The notion that somebody who uses his weapon from time to time and his knife daily in a non-modern setting would not have the means to resharpen them somewhere in his baggage is pretty unrealistic.

Sounds doable with such a thin gauge, but either a fine edged cold chisel in a vise, or a #13 turning edge for a hardy hole would make the job much much easier. I HIGHLY advise to braising a layer of tin to the inside of the edge first, to seal the metal from corrosion inside the weld.

On that note, welding the roll seems a little overkill to me. A thicker gauge would eliminate the need for any rolled egdes what so ever, but obviously, would take more work and tools.

Here is a good link discribing the use of a cold chisel to roll the edges.

Yes, the would. A nick is a weak point if you do not "round it out". The longer the blade, the more critical can these damages be. Like I said, I do not necessarily mean stuff I would always carry with me but also stuff I would generally pack as fluff items.

Nicks are weak spots. Simple as that. This has nothing to do woth being a shitty knifemaker.

If you take a blade and for example grind in a triangular damage into the blade and bend the blade to breaking point, it will break at this priorly made weak spot. The same with a tang transition area that is not rounded. If you work with blades, especially if it comes to longer ones, you will want to repair these places at some point when you get the time. Or you could just throw them away and buy new ones of course, but somehow I do not see this as a very economically sane behaviour if you do not live in post-scarcity society.

Be it forged or made modern with stock removal, the heat treatment is the important thing that makes a blade great or crappy.
"Any amount of tempering" is not enough though. It should be the correct amount of tempering for the type of blade, the planned use and the material. The blade can still be prone to chipping if you do not do it right at this point.

> And whetstones only hone blades, not remove nicks.

In no way did I say repair has to happen instantly and that a blade is beyond use at this point.

Yes, and that is the reason I will carry this stuff with me. Not necessarily all the time, like I already said half a dozen times. scout guy (me) does not find it necessary or worthwhile to read the shit either.

It is a cool pauldron. But I am curious how it will look dyed and oiled. Like I proposed yesterday, try different combinations of dye and oil on scrap pieces. Do a test piece without stain, just with oil. Try thinning the stains with denatured alcohol, it can easily get too dark in my experience.

But I would recommend waiting a day to review the final colours.

I use linseed oil and effax leather balm. At first it simply gets a little bit darker in a nice colour of brown. The oil and fat need some time though to properly "branch out". A day later, the colouring is more uniform and even takes on a reddish tint (maybe because of the balm, I never had this when using linseed oil on its own).

Just remember not to saturize it with oil and fat. If you overdo it, leather is even easier to cut afterwards.

...what?

>>7349567

Depends. Some guys try to do it without shrinking the leather. I do not know if that really works and how.

I go all the way with shrinking. It will help if you soak the leather beforehands with very warm water. Afterwards it is put into the boiling water and moved and flipped everytime it begins to bend to much. If it turns into a U shape, heating the bottom of the U can cause it to "even out again". Here you need to make your experience. If you got that you can boil quite big pieces without causing a "leather sausage". It shrinks to half the size while doubling thickness. Afterwards you put it in your sink, flatten it out as good while you can while cooling it down with cold water if you need a flat piece. Afterwards I cut it into the pieces I need and press it between two plates with tools.

If you want a special form, make a negative of what you want to achieve and mold and affix it to this negative while hot. Wait with removing it from the form until completely dry (!!)

Use vegetable tanned leather, at least 2.5mm thick, 3 or 4 mm is better.
It must be untreated with fat. Even then, not every piece of leather will work, sometimes there are some parts of the same skin that come out brittle. Happens. You can see this if it gets too gelatinous and dark while cooking it.

Experience with the process is the most important part.

Don't do that!

Yes, I know everywhere you read about it you read beeswax. But I bet most of this is simply copied and copied and copied again from the original source.

If you do that, you will get a hard leather that is true. But it will be actually very easy to pierce it with weapons and it will lose some of its hardness when it gets warm. If you use water, it is really really tough as nails (the correct leather must be used of course), not susceptible to temperature and protects better.

You should try both with scrap pieces and see for yourself.

Most leather does not get brittle even then. It depends on the kind of leather you use. Use the right one and only small parts of the skin get brittle.

It comes out extremely tough, doubles in thickness and has a very slight flexibility left. When it is dry, piercing it is impossible, short of a crossbow bolt with the right tips at point blank range.

In a word: Different.
In many words: Polar opposites.

NERO has lots of rules and numbers. It favors people who can pay for stats or suck up to the people running the game. Everything has rules to tell you if you can or can't do something. Its tries to be heroic high fantasy.

Lost stories and dark tales is rules light with no numbers with an stress on realism and not being a dick. It favors people who have skill or practice in what they are doing. Things without rules have to be done IRL like solving puzzles or finding traps. It tries to be gritty low fantasy.

Its a mix of german/celtic/ euro folktales, a little bit of warhammer fantasy. Grimm's fairy tales by way or Berzerk. They are build their own fluff from there through players talking to grop and fitting their character backgrounds.

The setting is purposefully ambiguous for now, but comparable to WHF in most ways, while still allowing us to incorporate our own fluff. It is a 15th/16C western European low fantasy setting, that takes place mostly in the small villages and trade camps between the greater cities and burgs of the over arching Empire. The key thing to this, is that the games we are playing take place on the micro scale of the setting, in the ancient and dangerous forests that are in between the islands of civilization and settlements.
This also allows for men and women from all over the world: Traders and mystics from the burning sands across the sea. Mercenaries and Priests of the southern City-States. Fierce sailors and woodsmen of the north....etc. If you want to be a Northman Russian type from a village called Klaskena which has a reputation for bear tamers and wrestlers, go for it, as long as you has it out with me so I can make sure the lore fits, and I can record it.
