I made a unitard to wear under another superhero costume because the spandex I bought initially is too thin and, therefore, see-through (which I didn't realize until I'd sewn the base suit and tried it on). I'm hoping this black suit will act rather like a slip under a skirt and fix the issue.
My boobs look weird in this picture but I don't know why. I could blame the lighting, spandex or my camera phone but it could be any combination of those things causing the oddity.

Working on Alex DeLarge/Generic Droog from A Clockwork Orange.

Don't have camera right now, but Where could I get a so-called Bowler hat like Alex wears?

I have a black wal-mart fedora right now and it is OK but I want something more distinct.

I also plan on wearing thick black eye-shadow on one, possibly both eyes. If just one, it will be a "punched in the eye" look.

These are so cute. I'd totally wear them with normal outfits.

>>7322817
I just typed "black bowler hat" into Amazon and a bajillion workable hats just showed up. Derby hats are the same thing. If you can, try to go 1 step up in quality from "generic halloween costume bowler hat," but if you can't, one of those cheapy $7 ones will work fine. (Also look at the "related purchases" for some of them-- it's amusing.)

Satsuki's sword details are currently in the shitty rough paperclay stage, so no pictures yet.

The four of us were dressed in the height of fashion, which in those days was a pair of black very tight tights with the old jelly mould, as we called it, fitting on the crotch underneath the tights, this being to protect and also a sort of a design you could viddy clear enough in a certain light, so that I had one in the shape of a spider, Pete had a rooker (a hand, that is), Georgie had a very fancy one of a flower, and poor old Dim had a very hound-and-horny one of a clown’s litso (face, that is). Dim not ever having much of an idea of things and being, beyond all shadow of a doubting thomas, the dimmest of we four. Then we wore waisty jackets without lapels but with these very big built-up shoulders (‘pletchoes’ we called them) which were a kind of a mockery of having real shoulders like that. Then, my brothers, we had these off-white cravats which looked like whipped-up kartoffel or spud with a sort of a design made on it with a fork. We wore our hair not too long and we had flip horrorshow boots for kicking.

I keep getting little bits and pieces done, but I need a good day to sit down and just truck through all the work I need to do before katsucon.
This is the basic structure of the spider legs so far. Stuck some random pieces of the garments on the dress form just to give it a bit of perspective I guess. The harness part should be covered by the five hundred bustles I have to make. It's been a pain in the butt to try to figure out how to get the legs to be removable so I can, you know, fit through doors and stuff.

Ps sorry if the picture is huge! I think I resized it but I don't know how to work an iPad.

I tend to do things the hard way, and I thought about gluing them down but I also wanted to make sure that the edges of the pleather get tucked into the rubber of the shoe and stitching them down pulls the material under the rubber strip quite nicely. So It works out. I also will want to find an alternative to hot glue or zap a gap as the two methods I've tried do not yield the cleanest results.

If anyone has any good suggestions on tacking down boot covers, I'm all ears!! I have another pair to make later that will murder me...

Working on dyeing the fabric for my Medicine Seller costume.
Blue-gray fabric at the top didn't get ironed after washing, which is why it's super-crepe-texture. It's more saturated IRL, but I spent the morning overdyeing it turquoise so it doesn't get washed out by the other colors in photos. Original colors of purple and green fabrics can be seen from the bottom swatches. Green has to be dyed again to get a darker color, boo hiss. Pink and red aren't getting messed with. Cloudy green was originally white on dark green, discharged and redyed it for a more even color.
I dunno what fabric I want to use for the collar and hem of the robe; satin, I guess?

Sorry such a shit picture, but i'm nearly done with my gauntlet! Gonna make a steampunk -esque exoskeleton over the surface, connected to a round part on that centralized leather bit on the arm. It's going to connect through aluminum tubing (spraypainted copper or brass) up to the fingers. It's gonna have a few leds in it too, and then maybe some other little steampunk esque things attatched to the power source. (so like a pressure gauge, or a co2 tank, maybe a little weapon on the surface.

Is there some reason you want to use aluminum tubing instead of brass tubing? The weight difference at that size will be negligible.

Really, the two things are keep it clean, and keep it oiled.
Keep it clean, use compressed air and/or a brush to get stray fibers out of the bobbin casing; my gf had a $100 repair bill on her machine cause she let shit get so compacted in there it fucked it up. And along the needle shaft too, fibers can float up there.
And keep it oiled... Anywhere moving parts meet or slide against each other, drop some good ol' 3-in-1 oil in there. The needle shaft is most important, but eventually you should open up the entire case and lube everything.

Thanks for asking, cause it reminds me that I'm overdue to do all this to my own machine.

I need some advice. I am working on Riven's sword for Katsucon. I made it out of an insulation foam sheet and expanding foam. Then I started to cover it in paper mache clay and... now it's curved to one side. I'm guessing this is due to the paper mache clay shrinking and that I didn't add any dowel rods to this end for support, thinking I only needed them to support the connection to the hilt. Anyway, is it salvageable, or should I just start over and approach it differently. It sucks considering how much time I spent carving into it already.

>> No.7330937

Ooof. How long did you wait before you added the paper clay onto the expanding foam? Sometimes when you think you've waited long enough for expanding foam to dry, it's actually still curing inside. Don't use insulation foam so liberally next time. Stacking foam boards is fine. Sintra is good also. Pink foam is poor for large flat objects like this, especially by itself. It can be okay if you have some rigid plywood holding it up or something.

I'm still figuring out how I want to do the hollow look. I'm thinking either a body suit and mask or full on body paint.

Anyway, another progress shots. Got the greaves mostly together and am continuing to shape them. The innward curve in the middle isn't blending too well. Then I gotta attach the knee guard. Also I decided to do the helm in the foam I have cause I'm thinking it'll look fine as long as I bevel the edges enough.

The pattern is simplicity 5006, it says it's a corset but it is more of a fashion corset imo. Here is a better image w/o the casing sewn in.

I will be using spiral and flat. I've done some tests and while I know spiral is more comfortable it doesn't give me the shape that I want in some of the seams. I forgot to mention this is for Maleficent designer doll.

There are so many corset guides that I combined a lot of info and went with it. I'm sure I did a lot of things wrong (I totally forgot the waist tape). I'm happy I haven't completely messed it up.

>> No.7332955

>>7332929
You can add the waist tape later, it really tends to give it more strength, at least, from the ones I've bought, it seems that way, but Thanks for the guide!

Now, I'm not that much of a sewfag, but how do you make it so thick, and tough? Is there some kind of fabric toughener you put in the interior? two layers of fabric shouldn't be enough to make it strong, should it? most of them I've seen, and own, are tough as nails, with lots of thick fabrics

The pleather is a medium thickness. And I thought would be ok with just the pleather and cotton layer. Your right that corsets have ton of layers. agreeing with this. The point of a steampunk outfit is to make a character that fits within that world.

What kind of character wears a gauntlet with a gear floating on the back of the hand attached to nothing?

Everything on the outfit is supposed to represent the character during that fashion age (Edwardian I believe, think wild west for the US people) and anything 'gadgety' should fit in with that character.

A noble lady wouldn't have a huge rifle strapped to her back. She might have a very small pistol hidden in her skirt, or some opera viewing glasses hanging around her neck that are made to zoom out much further than normal opera glasses, etc.

So, what kind of character is going to use a metal gauntlet with canisters on it? This is a legitimate question, not meant to be mocking. I think it has too much on it that is non functioning to make it 'good' steampunk.

Bayonetta handgun is just about ready for casting. Just needs a bit more details sanding and its ready to go. Came out pretty good for a project put together in 2.5 days. 3mm layers sandwiched for the large parts, 1mm for the smaller details. Six 3mm layers for the handle, ten for the gear box, four for the trigger guard etc. The barrel are 3/4 inch pvc pipe that i cut with saw and rotary tool.

I made this gun to have 11 distinct different heights across the gun. A few more if you count the 1mm high details. More layers = better depth = less 'flat' cheap looking gun.

Just drew out the design on a sheet of 1mm and kept changing my drawing and measurements until it looked as close to the in-game model as I could get it. Cut then out with a razor knife and a box cutter. Glued the layers together with a special kind of super glue that works well with PVC. Added some putty to areas that needs it then sanded even with a rotary tool. Lots of file and hand sanding to clean up the details.

I've been messing around with some spare cloth I have to get Elsa's under-dress right, and I think I've found a good balance.
I'm not going to try and win any awards with this guy so I'm going to make it out of stretch plus I'm in the middle of shedding weight and would hate to constantly have to tailor a perfectly fitted and lined dress. Plus I honestly think stretch can look good!

I am making a separate bodice, but I want to have a full under-dress for comfort sake. The bodice is going to go on over this dress I'm working on. I'm coming from a year of working in the garment industry, and not working on cosplay, so I automatically designed it to have each piece be a complete garment. If there's been a better way to design it, let me know, I'd love to get back into the full swing of costuming!

>> No.7346089

>>7346079
Not sure, but I wouldn't want the two separate garments to layer in a way to make you look thicker, considering the kind of texture the bodice itself has adds to the overall silhouette. In terms of garment construction you could easily look at it as the bodice with the skirt attached and then both pieces lined together to make one complete garment since the bodice will need structure and boning.

The width of having two layers shouldn't be a huge problem. I'm not a small girl, but generally the plan was to cinch my waist in a little bit. I won't be going full corset on the bodice, but I'm going to do a rigid fully lined bodice, and do rectangular sequins or hand cut plastic rectangles instead of something like rhinestones or beads that will add a whole lot of weight or width. Something more like this pic (from the Frozen Thread), but much less matte, and more sparkles/iridescence.
I'm going to keep your advice in mind though, if it has too much bulk it's always possible to convert to a lined single garment! :)

I'll first say that insulation foam is probably not a good idea for a mascot head...
Secondly, for patterning material over one, most people use tape to create a pattern for it (which happens to be exactly what I'm doing right now for Nyanta's mask). Tape over the base, then cut off in shapes that will lay flat. There may be a lot of darts involved depending on the stretch of the material and complexity of the shape.

Messing around with different methods of doing snowflakes on Elsa's cape. I love the iridescent material + heat 'n bond method I saw on here, and I didn't try that one yet, but I did do a handful of different variations on stencil + some kind of adhesive + Glitter/rhinstones.

I was just using a generic snowflake shape because it was quick to cut a stencil for, and my rhinestones are not placed with ~perfection and care~ but I think I found the best way to do this method at least! If I end up doing this method for the final, I'll be hand beading a lot of crystal beads to the cape too, so the rhinestones won't be too out of place.

Thanks! I was expecting to get chewed out for shit pics and not giving enough fucks to clean up the edges! I think my best results (on the right) came from using spray adhesive with a iron-on homemade freezer paper stencil, and more fine glitter vs large glitter flakes!

I'm going out to buy a couple of cheap paintbrushes for brushing on the glitter; I'm going to have glue residue and glitter on my fingers for the next week if I do it all again by hand!

Is it some special adhesive? Because if you are using stencils, you could maybe use spray on adhesives (i havent used them much, so no idea how they work on fabric but stencils + sprays = easy work)

You said it exactly! I'm using a heavy duty spray adhesive I found that won't actually stiffen the material. It's great! I can't decide what I want to seal the sparkles in with though. Probably a clear drying glitter glue spray (which looks amazing in testing! It's like a light misting of tiny iridescent glitter with a very unobtrusive clear sealing layer).

I know what you mean. I've been thinking the same thing myself back and forth. I like it, but it's not quite fitting, but then again the cape does have a lot of sparkle.

Also the actual patterns will be much bigger on the cape, this one was probably only 4-5 inches across, and would be the tiniest ones on the cape if I did do them. If the rhinestones feel like the fit better on the full scale I'll keep them, but otherwise I'm totally comfortable skipping that step! :)

I think you can easily fix it and have it be much more flattering. I'd take it in on the sides. I don't really think you need darts, and hers doesn't have them so adding them messes up the accuracy. Thanks! I got the spray adhesive after doing a modpodge test that left a lot to be desired. I'm still working on my technique, but you can see in this pic, the 2nd snowflake down was the one I did with mod-podge and I just couldn't get the glitter to seal onto the cape. You're mostly just seeing the modpodge without any glitter stuck to it after it dried. The modpodge also got pretty stiff, where as the spray adhesive leaves the cape to bend and move :)

The one that worked the best (I tried 2 kinds) was actually NOT the cloth spray adhesive. It was a generic grocery store "weldwood" brand multipurpose spray adhesive. What I really like about it is that it takes a while to dry; like on the scope of several hours rather than minutes, but will get tacky within minutes. If you add a dab to the back of a rhinestone, wait for both the stencil spray and the rhinestone glue to dry for a couple of hours, and then stick on the rhinestone, the bond is SUPER strong.

So what I do is a base spray, add all my glitters, a light spray over to seal it, THEN lift off the stencil, and after a few hours add on the rhinestones. Got pretty good results with that method!
