I told a lot of stories about him on /tg/ but I rarely name the people in my stories. Mostly because the name wouldn't mane anything to anyone around here.
He is one of the guys I met during my first larp and we are friends since then. Also as we soon found out we can work together pretty good. For years we two were THE team evil in a larp and even today we can pretty much fuck shit up for anyone.
You could say that while I'm cunningly brutal he is brutally cunning. Or the other way around. The thing is I'm the sneaky ruthless guy who backstab everyone and gather all the information and sneak around undetected while he is the ruthless party face and one of the best fighters in larps. most of the landsknecht stuff is actually pretty easy to put together with very simple patterns. On the other hand most of it requires a huge amount of textile compared to other cloths so there is that.

You don't have to choose a period name, and many people dont (I didn't)

Moose are period. Moose is just the native name of the Eurasian Elk. check out this part of the Wikipedia article for more info on moose in period
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moose#Europe_and_Asia

Sabertooth cats are right out. I would also wait a bit until you understand what the animals mean, what their positions translate into, and that you don't need animals. It also helps to use heraldry from a culture you focus on, and you're not quite focused yet.

>What TIME FRAME. And understand, it is the most complicated sewing you'll ever do.
LKs have not that much of a time frame and mostly the decoration changes and became more and more baggy. Plus it's not reenacting so isn't that important to be 100% authentic, 40-50 years difference are fully acceptable.
And as I said LK cloths are svery simple compared to other cloths but need way more textile.
Another problem is the cuts which only a real problem if you don't use thick enough wool or something similar otherwise you have to sew around all of it so it won't fall apart. That is a time consuming thing. But with 500 gr or more wool you will be safe (preferably 70% or up on how pure is the wool)

Gotcha, thanks Gropey as always. And yeah I was going to ask if you even had too, because the girl I am doing it all with doesn't want to choose a name because it seems odd to her. Personally I'd do it once I get a focus on a culture.

Just from speaking too a lot of the people who had been there for a few years or more it is obvious choosing a culture can be a bit hard because a good bit of them hadn't chosen one.

well then find someone who can sell you 100% wool because that's pretty much important to this (I can say that stoffe.de is a pretty good place for this and they ship to all over the EU AND with a very good shipping price. For example they ship it for free here if you orders value is more than 300 eur). Also you will need linen too.
Of course you can use more expensive materials too like velvet and silk which would be authentic too but I presume you aren't looting villages because those shit ARE expensive.

Alsoalso little thing that most people got rong with most cloths from that period: doublets and stuff like that ends at your hanging ribs. Doesn't go lower. period. your hose what goes up and covers your belly. Kind of important.

Also you may or may not will need a leather jerkin or a waffenrock

I for example would like to mix my armor parts from all around the time scale because there is always some cool thing in every century. But if I want to be a reenactor I cant, I have to make compromises. If someone is larping than he has way more freedom. So as long as someone doesn't say that hi IS wearing an authentic landsknecht costume then I don't really care he can draw ideas wherever the fuck he wants. And mix up all kinds of times.

also anon. another important thing about LK cloths. most of the time it's made out of several layers, the first one is more or less fitting and preferably made out of linen. Then you can have as many layers as you want for the decoration. You sew this to the first one and you slash this layer(s) but it mast be always have a different color than the other layers.
Rule of thumb, the more we advance in time the more baggy and frills/insane stuff will have the cloth. The really early LK stuff doesn't even resembled the stuff most people associate with them

Also about the layers you CAN make your upper cloth from one layer but generally that meant back in the time you didn't had enough money for something better. Then it's absolutely important to have a really good white shirt. The whiter the better. Then others can see your very good white shirt through the slashes and see that you can afford to wear a clean white shirt every time. If it's dirty and stuff like that.. well then you are not that cool (but you can still burn down peasant houses)

It was a damn good time - got to chat with a really awesome French guy who's been pretty heavily involved in the French LARPing scene (or "jeu de rôle grandeur nature") about mechanical differences and a bunch of other stuff.

Driving out to another game in mid-February - they've got access to a giant indoor arena that they've been decorating as an Underdark market. Whole place is goddamn amazing, even if I'm not a fan of the underlying mechanics of the game. Either way, it's plot and people, not rules, that make a game good - great rules and a shitty set-up can really screw people over, although I will concede that good rulesets make life easier.

The only problem is that it requires that candlelit appearance - it's thoroughly modern when it's not decorated well - but thankfully, it works for any game someone would like to run there.

I love these field trip threads. Thanks you guys for stopping by.

What are some good fabrics to use instead of wool for someone who can't wear wool (I'm allergic apparently and I get hives when I wear it)? I would love to attempt a kampfrau sort of gown before I cut into my gold brocade and go full Cranach, or to add some more authenticity to my current renaissance fair kit (which is all linen and sort of half-assed Italian ren). I started out wanting to do historical costuming but there aren't a ton of places to wear that stuff here so I ended up getting my pretty princess fix with Lolita fashion instead.

I've been thinking.
Thinking about a Call of Cthulhu LARP. Just a personal thing for a smaller, tight-knit group. Hiring a cottage or country house out in the faire English countryeside for 6-10 players, with a handful of monster crew, with player fees going towards the cost of rental.

A rich old benefactor/relative/friend/client/mentor of the PCs has passed on after years as a recluse at his home in the countryside. The PCs have been invited to stay at his former home while his lawyers go over the fine details of his will and apportion the players that which has been left to them. However, things begin to go terribly wrong. All IC from time-in to time-out, mysterious NPCs, terrible clues left around the house, linears out into the surrounding land/woods to delve further into the mystery, and horrors in the surrounding woods that prey on weak minds at night and prevent anyone from leaving until help arrives.

Any issues that immediately arise with this idea? Other than the astronomical cost of actually renting a good site for the weekend, of course.

I'm just talking pipe dream stuff at the moment, but planning for the future is always nice.

Well, they (Amtgard) did break away from the SCA for reasons, one of which was the cost. That they provided a game for lower income folks that would have never LARPed otherwise was pretty altruistic, but the fact is that this isn't 1983 anymore and crafting materials and technology have progressed beyond the game's scope. Instead of upgrading at least the weapons (if not the garb requirements) to match what's available out there in other LARP systems (which would provide for a larger NA market for latex and what-all), they continue to pander to the cheapest and simplest possible paradigm.

Are there any good websites to check this kind of stuff out? Something just opened in my state and it's horse shit. I have land, the will to do it and the thoughts of how awesome this is going to be. But I have no idea where to start.

For instance;
- Do you set people up in separate groups and they play the same quest different times?
- Do you charge people for this?
- Who organises food?

Oh god help

Why not have factions instead? and intrigues?
If everyone has a personal intrigue and a faction intrigue then everyone is the hero AND the villain of someones story
>- Do you charge people for this?
Yes. Just enough to cover the expenses, maybe a liiittle bit more. To avoid the red numbers.
>- Who organises food?
This how they do it at my regular larp:
You bring your own food OR you pay extra for food that the tavern-people(people who play tavern people tend to go to the game free of charge) make (bought in by the game arrangers, of course). They make breakfast, dinner and an evening meal.
But it is always smart to bring a little extra food of your own.

What state are you in, because all three of those questions are answered differently, by different groups.

Lost Stories & Dark Tales (my group) for example:

- Everyone plays all at once, and there are several story lines to pursue, and npcs to interact with. Everything happens in realtime, so if you do A, B is still happening, but with other people, etc. You do as your character would. Would your character go explore the woods? Become a bandit? Accept a job to help protect a research group? Go heroically rescue a child for no reward? etc.

-usually there is a small fee, due or donation to help pay for site rentals, and meal plans if they happen.

-We offer a meal plan of freshly cooked medieval food. NPC volunteers get fed for free as thanks.

I'm worried about setting it all up factiony because we have a lot of newbies and I don't them to feel overwhelmed by LARP and never come back. The theory is they get built up to it over time.

Again, using my group as an example (not trying to sound self involved), I'll have some torn up shirts/tunics, stage blood corpse-palour makeup and eye khole for undead, but if the NPC has fake teeth, better makeup, fake organs, etc, It is more than welcome!

We just started. We'd like to have at least monthly or bimonthly games.

Right now, we got a thinktank headed by a few of us veterans. We will in the future accept story/quest submissions from members.

No, nor do we need any unless we become incorporated and charge membership. As of now, there is an Article VI Self sufficiency waiver, that states that any and all activity is taken at ones own risk, and with the exception of county, state and federal laws, anything that happens to you is your own fault. This is coupled with the venue's event site waiver that each player must sign that states the conditions of use (IE, if you're running in the woods and jump into some poison sumac, it not the Boy Scout's camp's fault).

As an informal not-for-profit group, LS&DT has no body or bodies to be legally liable, any more than if you joined a game of some random people playing football in the park. It is your choice, and you take responsibility.

thats Gn de guerre ( Literaly : Warlarp )

People are a little more rough with each other because everyone is there for only one reason, combat

also since it's usually 60 people max (get as low as 30 during really bad weather...pff pussies) and max 100 , it's easier to keep everything at one place and play with objectives

What i mean by that is the rules are so simple

- all weapons do 1 damage
- ligth and medium armor ( leather, gambeson , ringmail where the ring are super spaced) protect for 1 damage (so you get 2 hitpoint everywhere you have this armor)

Heavy armor (chainmail, plate...) protect 2 points , so you have 3 hp total

the objectives are told to the leader of each group at the beggining of each scenario , and the success or the failure of a scenario could mean you will have to play defense or attack at the next turn

For an exemple :
part 1 - the mission is to capture the leader of the other group
part 2- if you succeed , you must protect it inside a fort from your ennemies who try to liberate him
if you fail , you must liberate your leader
part 3 - if you are able to defend him , you must escort him to the other end of the terrain ,and he is not able to leave the main road
if you fail to defend him during the siege, you must lay an embuscade and stop your ennemy from escorting him at the other end of the terrain

thats an exemple of one scenario we had, at the other end of the terrain was lunch ...and i'm always really hyped for lunch

Pretty simple, really.
For the first stage both players start with 9 pieces and take turns putting them on the corners and crossings on the grid. If either of them manage to put 3 in a straight row, they may remove a piece of the opponent as long as it's not part of a straight row itself.

Now comes the second stage, where the players take turns moving one of their pieces to the next free corner or crossing along the grid, again attempting to form a straight row of 3 pieces (after which you obviously may remove a piece every time you create a row). Again, you can't remove pieces from a row already on the field.
If either player loses all of his pieces but 3, he gains the ability to put them anywhere on the grid in his turn (still only one per turn though). If he goes below that, he loses.

I have the 18th century one, and although I haven't used it yet, the patterns and info look wonderful. I'd love to get that 16th century one too.
