A lot left to do on it but I'm pleased with the general look.

I was supposed to cosplay Chun Li at ALA but my wig took a shit and didn't work. So last minute switch and I'm doing Alt Makoto from SSF4. I started this yesterday so I didn't have time to make the perfect plaid for it. But I think it looks ok! I'm out to get shoes and bandages now and when I get home I'm gonna style my wig.

I do it without a pattern, it's really easy! And looks better than the patterned kind with a front and back seam, imo. Only works with 4 way stretch stuff obviously. For the chie boots i had to put a dart in the front since its only 2 way.

Looks better than your first draft, but your top is still inaccurate. Really, it's not all that hard to make an accurately draped top. Why spend all this time on a costume if you're going to cop out of one of the most noticeable but easiest parts?
Fixed corset looks much nicer but still comes up a little too high and makes your boobs look smaller than they are. Weathering on the fabric looks good though.

Those inaccuracies may be noticeable to certain people, but I really don't think people are going to give that much of a flying fuck about it and if they are going to give me shit over it and not offer any helpful advice on how to accomplish it they're not the kind of people I care to associate with when it comes to cosplay. Nothing too special so far.
I'm working on a blood sword for my Mirai cosplay. (It's a little over 3ft long)

MDF is a flimsy material so I had to double it up with thin plywood on each side. It gave a nice thickness to it and it's still lightweight.
I have to sand the hell out of it (edges are still bumpy) and then paint it. (There's also an ugly seam line that I filled in with a sawdust/wood glue mixture but it'll go away with more sanding.)

I'm pretty satisfied with the bare bones of it so far.

I would've used sintra or some other foam if I were you. Consistently beveled edges are a bitch with wood - especially plywood.

The armor makes sense, but I don't see why you would have to resin the sword and shield.

You have the design, go cut it out of wood or something. Just because one technique is good for a certain accessory doesn't make it universally good.

Seriously. You'd be wasting so much time making that sword out of resin.

>> No.7298763

>>7298732
Im not 100% sure what you mean but I dont make molds out of these, I coat them in resin, then fibreglass the insides then body filler the outside then sand and detail with a dremel then paint. They are the skeleton more or less.

Also I can't work with wood never tried and I'd imagine the wood would be too heavy. Realistically I want to make it out of pink insulation foam but I can't find any. And Id still have to seal and strengthen it so I just stuck with what I know

>> No.7299111

>>7298763
That's a big part of the issue. Sticking with what you know. It's like a tailor making a sword out of frills because it just "what he knows." There are different tools for different things, the important thing is to experiment and try new stuff.

Wood wouldn't be very heavy at all, but here's my advice. Go to a local sign shop and ask to buy some PVC foam/ sintra. Wouldn't cost you over $15 for enough to build the shield, and maybe less than $10 for the sword. Easy to cut, easy to glue, easy to sand and to paint. It's firm stuff that takes an edge easily and allows for a lot of detail without looking bad. Check it out.

Pink insulation foam would be horrid here, but why would you use that in the first place? Breaks apart too easily and doesn't allow for thin blades or small details.

Here's one side of the magnet array, the triangle parts are basically the same, with one additional magnet pair on the side of each one to keep the points together when they're in that mode. They're just your standard 1/4"x1/8" neodymium magnets, one of the medium grades so not horrendously powerful or anything.

Now, the ring magnets for the haft, those are horrendously powerful. The only ones in the size I needed were like N52 or some shit, oy. But I guess at least it won't fall apart.

Honestly, I don't see why magnets. A simple wooden slide mechanism would be more sturdy, AND easier to implement.

>How would you ensure that the tip stayed in the position you slid it to, though? Especially with rotating the spear, moving it around, etc.

That's something to figure out, but with magnets it'll have the same problems, if not worse. Probably worse. Off the top of my head, you could drill a hole and insert a dowel to keep the part in place. Or have a small chunk of wood in between to act as a stopper. Or use a small screw. Etc Etc.

>The bevels will be pretty easy tho, just a belt sander for the big stuff and a dremel tool for the small stuff, nothin' I haven't done 5 times before.

There's the stuff on the top, I mean. The spear has two layers, with the edge of the spear bulging out and the middle recessed, and the center of the spear is a sort of a pyramid. Those might be a little difficult, but I guess if you have a a wood shop it should be fine.

That's exactly what I did with the magnets, though. See the little metal rods on the end in >>7301166
The rods are there to provide stability, but the magnets are needed to prevent the head from sliding off the rod.

>The spear has two layers, with the edge of the spear bulging out and the middle recessed,
Ah, I see what you mean now. I've got 1/4" wood to put on the top and bottom to make the edges, like so. Gonna glue that to the triangles probably later today or tomorrow.

>> No.7301735

>>7301714
>The rods are there to provide stability, but the magnets are needed to prevent the head from sliding off the rod.

I doubt two flimsy rods are enough to hold up a head that big. It's wood, remember. It'd be fine if it was foam, but this is wood.

When I mentioned having dowels, that isn't for them to be the ONLY supporting structure, just to lock the slide into place. If you want to do it like this, fine, but a dowel or two are not enough to hold those huge-ass tips in place. MAYBE if you extended them, and drilled a hole sideways through the base of the spear tip, and screwed the dowels into place. That might work.

The middle piece is a bit lopsided, check that.

And remember to sand and bondo the wood - since it's wood, the texture will be incredibly obvious without sanding.

And if you're gonna use a spear-tip that heavy, fill the other end of the spear with metal balls or something. You're gonna need a counterweight.

Again, I don't really see why people insist on making everything out of EVA foam. That shield could've took half as long, and looked better, and not be lopsided, if you just used sintra or wood or whatever.

>EVA foam is cheaper and easier to cut?

Not really. It's easier to cut but harder to cut straight, and doesn't have a grain to guide the knife. I mean, it's a foam. You really have to take a saw to it.

PVC foam is much easier to cut and shape, at least for flat objects. 3D, EVA wins out.

>>7301935
>It's made from insulation foam, and I did that because it's cheap, easy to get, and lightweight. I made the sword out of wood, and wouldn't be able to lug around two giant wooden props all day.

Sintra is like $10 bucks for a couple nice chunks, but does get expensive if you use it alone for something this size, and is about as light as EVA foam, but doesn't need all the bondo or Gesso weighing it down.

The best way, I think, would be to sandwich a small sheet of EVA between two sheets of sintra, so you get the consistent flat edge while also keeping the volume. Plus, having the two sides made of PVC foam lets you have a more precise shape.

How does a ruler work when, say, you're trying to cut at a 30-degree angle, or need a sharp edge, which crumbles away anyways with EVA foam? You could build a rig for it, but the material just isn't built for that.

I'm not really sure why everyone seems to think wood is nearly as heavy as steel, or something. The 1/8" steel rods are enough to hold it quite steady, especially when you factor in the magnets, the wood spade things on either side of it, and the fact that the rod is entirely surrounded by wood except at the connection. With all that, the only unsupported force that's gonna be on them is shear force directly outwards, and if I have any significant amount of force in that direction then something's going terribly wrong. It's pretty solid as it is, and the addition of the 1/4" trim isn't gonna change that much, since that's pretty light.

>And remember to sand and bondo the wood - since it's wood, the texture will be incredibly obvious without sanding.
Sanding goes without saying, but I've found gesso to be a lot user-friendly than bondo. Much easier to apply and sand, and you don't have to worry about toxic fumes which is rather advantageous.

The weight isn't the issue, It's the lack of support. Even with neodymium magnets, those tips will fall out at the first shake without any proper support.

And this could be very heavy or very light depending on the wood. Poplar and basswood aren't in the same category as oak.

>Sanding goes without saying, but I've found gesso to be a lot user-friendly than bondo. Much easier to apply and sand, and you don't have to worry about toxic fumes which is rather advantageous.

Gesso is flakey, doesn't sand as smooth, and has a somewhat grainy texture. Plus, it doesn't take primers and spray paints as well. And it can come off with very strong tape. And a variety of other issues.

It's good for certain situations, like coating foam, but for something that'll have to be tough and durable, Bondo has to be the choice, unless you've got some other epoxy putty or resin or something to use.

>Kind of nice to see someone talking about Sintra for once. I have a ton of it lying around but I haven't figured out what to do with it yet, since I wasn't sure how to approach cutting it, sanding edges, etc.

Make a sword.

Remember that Sintra is not acrylic, but a foam. It has a grain like wood, but not nearly as strong as styrene. It will bend and distort a great deal. It also needs to be finished just like pink foam.

For starters, try a dagger or something. Sintra is best at flat shapes, slight curves, and boxes. It's ideal for swords, shields, axe heads, blocky armor, guns, etc. Not as good for rounded armor, smooth armor, staves, clubs, any unconventional 3D shape.

X-acto knife works but you'll also want files, sandpaper, a hand saw, and a dremel tool or some other fine rotary tool. It cuts much easier than pink foam but has to be layered to achieve volume. It's also easily dented and sides need to be filled in and flattened. Basically, build something simple and learn the feel of the material. There's only so much you can say in words.

To be fair, I'd think it would look better with a slight bend to it. You can stick a dowel in it to prevent bending too far.

>dowels aren't hollow which is kinda necessary to run a chain through it.

Oh, you're planning on making it break apart? I dunno, what would the mechanism be? A screw? Just tight joints? Would it be stiff enough, if the sections could separate? How would you keep them straight?

As I see it, just make two poles, interchangeable. One is a chain-link with multiple sections, the other is a straight, stiff pole. You can use the chain-link pole for certain occasions, and vice versa. You could even soldier the chain such that it stays in position, and create a pre-posed segmented spear.

No, the spearpoint's magnets and rods work perfectly, it's the chain-staff segments of the haft which don't hold up since they don't have any support. I could slap the point onto a long dowel and it'd be a regular spear that opens up, but then it'd be too long for Ohayocon. Because no more than 48" is totally a reasonable length! Fucking Ohayocon. I've made swords longer than that, how the hell do you expect us to have spears that fit in that length?

A few buddies and I are going to cosplay at PAX East. We're going as hunters from the multiplayer mode of Last of Us. We're each going to go as our player in game.

I actually use this hat to keep my head warm during the winter, so I didn't dirty it up just yet. There's also a tub of theater dirt we're going to use the day of the con.

We also have a large lineup of plastic guns, glowing molotovs and wooden 2x4's we'll be carrying out at the con.

It's our first time cosplaying, but it's a lot of fun so far.

Gotta fill those holes in man. And make the seams less obvious.

Here's a bit of advice for the paint, since I see so many amazing sculpts on /cgl/ ruined by a shitty paint job.

First, remember to paint in multiple coats. It's best to use a spray can for this. You want one base coat of a dark color, black, dark blue, dark red, brown, etc. This, on top of the primer, will not only even out the colors so you can spot imperfections, but also allow you to create a gradient, shaded effect when you apply more paint later.

When you paint the main color coat, preferably still with spray, remember to paint in thin coats. Whether you want gradient shading or a consistent color, that's always the best idea. Shake thoroughously no matter what and leave the cans in hot to warm water beforehand - especially in cold weather.

Always leave at least 24 hours between coats. No matter what the can says, fast dry my ass. It dries fast, yes, but paints have two processes - drying and curing. Just being dry isn't good enough to apply a second coat.

After the sprays are done, feel free to hand paint details and such. That's easy stuff. Weathering is hard, though, and you'll find many guides for it on the internet. It's complicated and I can't explain all of it, but look into enamel washes and drybrushing, as well as buffing graphite for the metallic sections and salt for paint chipping.

Ha, at least something good came of it then. There's pretty much no way it'll likely work, since those magnets were hella freaking strong, it wasn't even possible to pull them off of each other directly (before they were put on the segments), you had to slide them past each other. But magnets are a lot weaker against the lever action that's pretty much entirely what happens on the segment joints, they come apart a little bit on one side then it's all gone.

>>7310399
Yeah, I saw that after I'd started making the haft. Which is pretty stupid, because an aluminum tube is actually much less threatening than a solid wooden rod, since it'd be much more likely to bend in half than to do any damage at all. Regardless, it's a bit moot at this point.

Something with a softer drape will look better. If you're not going for period accuracy that can be a knit. Thanks a ton man! This really helps me out. Don't worry about them being messy; I have a CAD that I know how to use. The guy wearing the Balder Set is fucking ripped though. It looks like he has the huge upper body option from the character creator!

By the way, do you think you could get me an .obj of the Estus Flask as well?

Still not done, but getting there. Still need to make and attach the curves at each hip. Short torso problems = the curves are gonna go a little further down the skirt than in the references to keep me from looking too stumpy. Also the armband (and barrettes, not shown here) are done, so really it's just the boot covers after I finish up the armor.

what's the handle made out of? I am always dumb and forget if it's the material itself that has that brown finish, or the sealant on top of whatever people use. and then what will the finished product be made out of?

>> No.7316979

>>7316945
The handle was turned on a lathe from a $1 dowel. A few layers of spot putty and primer (that's what the red color is) to get rid of the grain, and then wet-sanded to get a glassy finish. Looking at it now, there's a few tiny pits that need to be fixed.

The finished product will be cast in solid resin. I haven't figured out which one specifically, but I know it's going to be one of the Smooth-On products.

Yeah! It being 3D is not exactly consistent with reference images, but I liked the idea of armor. That, and most of the versions I'd seen with gold sewn/fused directly to the dress didn't quite look right to me.

Sorry if this is more detail than you need, but I never know what may be useful for folks!

I took a plain headband and measured it then made a tube out of fabric to cover it and then sewed up the ends.

For the star, I cut out two star shaped pieces of gold spandex fabric, sewed it together except for a small hole so I could add some polyfill and then slipstitched the hole shut.

For the beaded parts, I bought some star beads and added them to eye pins to make them into charms. Then I just made strands of beads using stretchy cord, added a crimp bead, and attached the charms. Then I added another crimp bead to the tops of the strands and attached them to a ring. I then sewed the ring to the back of the star with a curved embroidery needle. I also sewed down the strands to the star in some places so that they would hang out more toward the side instead of straight down.

Then I sewed together a long rectangle out of the purple fabric, gathered it, folded it in half and sewed it to the gold star, again with the curved needle. Once that was done, I just hotglued the whole thing to the top of the headband.

Looking good so far! Are you heading to any cons in the near future?

When I did my Kariya makeup, I used a brush to paint on Ben Nye's clear latex base in the shape the veins, then I rolled tissue into small tubes with varying width and let them sit on top of the latex; from there I just kept layering and peeling until I liked the deformity/shape. Afterwards I used foundation/concealer/all that jazz and contoured with bronzer and matte eyeshadow for a more gaunt appearance. Fake blood is optional but it's Kariya, so...

I can't wait to see this when it's done!

>> No.7323410

>>7322745

Yeah, Ohayocon. I'm just using liquid latex, but maybe if I recycle this costume in the future I'll use a thicker latex base. I'm actually considering in investing in a sewing machine so I can make better costumes, though, so make-up is the least of my worries!
