Well screw it I might as well ask.
So a friend has recently brought up cosplaying at a con. He was thinking of Alucard, he's passable. He says I could do Anderson.
I'm 6'2~3 290 with black brown hair and glasses.
>wut
Anyway, this good idea?
Should I buy the clothes?
Should I try and make them *badly*?

copypastaing what I wrote in the previous thread
>I need to make a pair of digitigrade stilts (pic is from the best tutorial I found), but I am unknowledgeable on where to find materials other than craft stores/Home Depot. Where would I go to find sintra plastic and/or aluminum bars? I did some research into both but the only kinds of places I could find to get it from are the kinds that sell it in bulk for companies and shit. I live in a pretty big city too (just under 1 mil population), so I get the feeling I'm looking past where I need to
And no, I'm not going to make them out of wood instead

Have you tried wood?

>> No.7303431

>>7303372
If you can't sew, then your best bet is to get it commissioned. If you can't afford a custom commission, then you will want to check eBay or cosplay websites for pre-made ones. Also, you will need a wig. Please do not try to dye your hair and style it, as even if it looks right after you finished, within an hur or two, it will look like shit. Wigs hold their shape much better and longer once styled.

>>7303395
I am not sure why you are against using wood. It would be much cheaper and easier to make, and easier to get the supplies.

>> No.7303435

>>7303427
>>7303431
I might be able to use it as substitute for the aluminum, but the sintra plastic is for the legguards shown in the pic, and wood would not work for that. And also, I'm kinda heavy, and I'd worry about the structural integrity of wood, especially since, due to the nature of the stilts, the force will be pressing partly against the grain instead of with it, like it would with traditional stilts. Not to mention, I don't like going against clearly laid out instructions unless it's something I've done before and I'm comfortable doing so. It's like changing a recipe the first time you're cooking it. Not always the best results, and with something like stilts that could possibly get me injured, I'd rather play it safe.

And lastly, even if I do end up using wood, I still would like to know where to get the other materials

Have you thought about using a different guide then? A simple google search showed me several guides for digitigrade stilts, with many made from wood. And if it is the "less than professional" look of these that is throwing you off, then you need to realize that as long as they are sturdy, their look doesn't matter as they will presumably be covered by the costume.
A very important lesson that all cosplayers must learn: It's not what's inside that counts, so long as the outside looks pretty.

Trust me when I say I know sintra better than you would. Wood is FAR stronger. FAR FAR stronger. Sintra isn't acrylic, it's foam. You use it for detailed bits, not for furry hooves.

>And also, I'm kinda heavy, and I'd worry about the structural integrity of wood,

Lose weight then. No one wants to see a fatass satyr.

>especially since, due to the nature of the stilts, the force will be pressing partly against the grain instead of with it, like it would with traditional stilts.

What is a crossbar?

>It's like changing a recipe the first time you're cooking it. Not always the best results, and with something like stilts that could possibly get me injured, I'd rather play it safe.

These people are just as clueless. A large portion of prop building is trial and error.

Find some other guides. You should never follow just one.

Wood glue is good. Gorilla glue is good. Anything epoxy based or with acetone will melt the foam if it's not paper-mache'd or gesso'd.

I want to do a cosplay of Leela from Futurama for a fun, comfortable Sunday cosplay at somepoint. The only thing I'm stuck on is how to interpret her single eye; her bangs cover one side of her face andI was thinking of just using very subtle makeup tricks to make my showing eye look a little bigger and using the bang hair to cover my other one. This is the greatest anime ever and you need to watch it RIGHT FUCKING NOW. Yahari ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru.

It's 'K-On!', but edgy enough for the dark and mysterious man-children like myself. Don't be fooled by the first episode; the protagonist, Hachiman (8-man), may seem like a socially-awkward sperg that will remind you of your cringe-worthy behavior throughout high school (and to a certain extent, he will), but his handling of situations leaves something to be admired.

I'd recommend finishing up to episode five; if you don't relate to 8-man's personality by then you probably won't enjoy the rest of the series. The main thing to take from this plot is that it's not going to have a happy ending- 8-man doesn't follow the herd nor will he develop any intentions to. The most accurate adjective to describe the whole show is "bittersweet", much like high school and the teenage years in itself.

Once again, go fucking watch this shit. It also features one of the best girls ever; pic related.

Other Nui cosplayer here. My plan is to go with arda on this one. I want to get a blue steele, 2 clip in long ponytails and a pack of wefts in platinum blonde.
What I want to figure out is how to get that giant shape or at least a large enough shape (something close to my proportions) without it weighing me down or the clip falling off. I'm thinking maybe I can attach or insert a foam core in those clips somehow, just not sure how yet. Something light weight that will attach to the ponytails from within. And from that foam insert attach taped wires to make the drills.

Drill curl tutorial here: http://arda-wigs.com/blogs/tutorials/8696715-how-to-make-drill-curls

I've been lurking this post on the arda forum about Nui's hair. I'm not 100% sure how to get the headband method to work yet I haven't tried it out, I'l have to do some trial and error until I find a proper tutorial.

Foam is actually a great idea, going to take some innovation for sure though. Thanks for that link though, headband idea is genius, I noticed clip ponytails can really pull and I imagine these are going to be worse than regular ponytails.

The idea of stubbing just throws it into a whole new realm of complication, haha. I think I'll try to draft some construction ideas for both methods and see which one seems more feasible. I do wonder if that might be a little too heavy and pull at the wig, though.

That scissor blade though, damn! I was going to make my own but that seems like a really good deal. Kind of tempted to buy it and see how it turns out. It doesn't look like its a super high quality material but it looks way more detailed thank what I have time to make. Might be worth a shot!

My first thought was to get a bodysuit and then attach the extra armor parts to it, but there are a lot of seams in the armor that I probably couldn't replicate without actually making the suit myself. I seriously doubt my sewing skills are good enough to do it myself though.
Also what material would work best for it?

That scissor blade looks decent enough, and sure beats sculpting it yourself, if you have no prior experience. That said, it still looks like shit. You should probably re-paint it yourself to make it look good, or get a friend to do it or something. The sculpt isn't fantastic either, and it certainly won't stand out in the sea of other Nuis with their swords.

I've just been given a bag of yarn, hooks, and tools from an elderly relative of my boyfriend's. I found this device inside. I can tell it's for hand sewing with, but can anyone give me its name and tell me how to use it? Seems like you have to manually feed the fabric through.

There's some kind of handle on one side but it's hard to push (and looks like it previously had a knob). I also can't really see how to thread it.

Looking at the Rohan SAS on my shelf, I think part of it is just a matter of the design - his hair honestly looks a little weird from the side in 3D no matter how well-done it is. I think your best bet is to just focus on making three out of four sides look the best they can and accept that the fourth will look a bit odd.

Speaking of wigs, I feel like it would be fun as fuck to cosplay this guy and make a wig for him, but at the same time, the design speaks for itself. I almost feel like the best way to go about it would be to make a sort of helmet from styrofoam and cover it with wefts, kinda like what I've seen people do with wire for pompadours. Thoughts?

I'm planning on doing Hawke from Dragon Age 2, but I have a partial sleeve on the exposed arm and I don't think I could cover it up completely with makeup. If I made a sleeve of sorts out of dance tights would it be likely to look wrinkly and weird? Both the top and bottom edges would be covered.

I think the darker top layer could be either bustled to each side or just a normal layer, with tiers of white ruffles exposed at the front, but only one or two layers that go all the way around the dress, and a dusky pink layer underneath in a light chiffon or silk. On her right side there seems to be a bow (maybe two, another one with stripes or it could be part of the first bow) that could resemble a tail along with the train of the dress? In an OTT dress like that a really dramatic hemline is probably the key.

>>7310529
A sleeve of dance tights would be the way to go, I think - as long as the tights are tight enough around your elbow (if you have a skinny arm maybe grab a smaller size) wrinkling is minimal.

How do you guys feel about cosplaying body type for men?

Usually all the discussion I see is about women's body types or fat people.

My dilemma is that I want to cosplay Iron Fist (Marvel Comics) and he is generally shown to be a bit taller and an athletic/thin/martial arts body type. Where I would consider my body type about perfect for Wolverine or someone similar. I am 5'10" 225lb, more of a squat/thick body type I guess.

First of all, I confess to have bought my costume for my first cosplay and understand the error of my ways and my next con cosplay will definitely be my own etc...

I ordered a cosplay outfit (Homura) for a con I have in 5-6 days. I can get everything on but it's a little small. Mainly the undershirt, my shoulder and elbow movement is even kind of restricted. I can't even do her iconic hair flip since I can't reach that far around me. Also the sleeves are kinda short to begin with, like 2-2.5 inches away from my wrist.

Well, no. Wolverine is fucking short.

As for the body type issue, height is usually not a great concern for most. The only times it is ever even a little odd is when the character you are cosplaying is known for being really tall/shot and you are not. But even then, it's never given too much grief.
However, build is an entirely different thing. If you want to cosplay someone like Iron Fist, who is depicted as being super humanly fit, and you are out of shape, it will look bad. And that applies to either gender.

No. Dance belts do work. The only reason they would do what you are describing is if you are wearing them wrong. I have done a number of superhero costumes, I have worn a dance belt, and they do the exact job they are meant to do. Compression shorts can help, but they will still do more of an outlining than a concealing, and they will also often result in seam lines showing through.

A little unsure of what to do as far as fabric for Himari. While I realize it's supposed to have shine, all of the Himari cosplays I've seen that use vinyl tend to suck.

I haven't ever seen matte 4 way stretch vinyl in person, so I wanted to check to see if any of you had used it personally and if it was good at all. I wanted to use the same fabric for the bodice and shoes, hence the 4 way stretch.

Though, I'm wondering if I could just go with Marine Vinyl for the bodice if I make it tight enough (and just use the 4 way vinyl for the shoe covers)-- though that also brings me to wonder how I would do with adding the boning. Do you think it'd be too thick?

I apologize-- I've never been good with choosing fabric and I'm just nervous since I'd have to order the 4 way stretch vinyl online.

>> No.7316702

>>7316669
I don't know what your're looking far as shine, but you should use 4-way stretch for everything. The reason why a lot of vinyl Himari's look like crap is that they used 2-way on the body suit making it wrinkly and really obvious on shiny vinyl.

A lot of plug suit makers also make the mistake of using 2-way stretch and it looks like shit.

Marine Vinyl would be far too thick, don't be nervous a lot of seagulls swear by how reliable spandexhouse and spandexworld are. If you are really worried I know at least one has samples you can request, and the thicker the vinyl the less see through it will be and the less it will show any lumps.

This is more lolita related, so I hope someone can point me in the right direction.

I'm not a lolita, but I really love one lolita dress and would love to buy it. I've never bought from a lolita seller so I would have NO IDEA what to do. Does Juliette et Justine still make this dress? Is buying a dress from a lolita seller the same as like, buying from Taobao (also something I am not versed in)

>> No.7318111

>>7318081
Lolita brands generally make their items in very small limited runs. Once they are gone they are only to be found in secondary markets.
The dress you want was made and then had a rerelease and is unlikely to be made again. Your only chance at getting it is to find it second hand.
When it was available new all you had to do was log onto the JetJ site and order it. For that company anyone could get it new. They are pretty unique in that they do made to order so with this dress they took as many orders as people wished to place and then made the dresses without limiting quantity. Even with this system, if you miss the order window you are pretty much out of luck and finding it second hand is, while by no means impossible, rare.

No, they sold out a long time ago. Your best bet is looking on second hand sites. Egl comm sales, lace market, mbok, y!japan, usagiyouhinten, fururun, tokyoalice and here are some of the places you might be able to find it. It was super popular so expect to be paying at least retail for it.

Buying a dress from a lolita seller is like buying from any other online store. Buying from taobao is slightly different because most stores are set up to deal with Chinese customers only, so you usually need a middle man/shopping service.

If you want to go more costly, the same basic guides you find for the craft foam gauntlets and be applied to worbla, wonderflex, or sintra. The big thing I would suggest though is to have some type of foam lining inside of it so that it grips tightly around your arm and doesn't shift too much.

I'm trying to make a cosplay for this guy right here for an upcoming convention. My question is regarding the one piece outfit he has wearing at the base. I haven't been able to find something similar to it on its own so I'm guessing I'll have to try to make it. Any recommendations or tips? I was thinking the best route (for comfort) would be to get pajama top and bottoms that are separate and use velcro on the inside of the shirt to connect onto the pants, making them look somewhat seamless and keeping the stripes running along.

My main problem then would be with the stripes. I have no idea how I would paint them on/sew them on. Had they been horizontal it wouldn't be too bad and I probably could have even used a cheesy prison suit, but since they are vertical I'm left pretty clueless as to how to approach the costume.

I would find an overall pattern like this- Joannes should have a good selection of overall patterns to work with. I'm assuming you're male, so be sure to take your measurements and check both male and female patterns- you might be able to work with larger sized women's patterns.

from what I can tell, the suit's front goes all the way to the neck, right? you might have to cut the front higher, but I can't see it being too difficult.

Then, for the design's integrity, I'd hide a snap closer on both sides so it's hidden, and then I'd put a zipper on a side.

It sounds like a lot, but if you look up some modifying patterns tutorials and follow the pattern instructions, it shouldn't be hard at all!

I'd stay away from light cotton because it wrinkles like a bitch, but I don't even think you'd find the stripes for that anyways.

Honestly, I'd go with a stuffer fabric, even denim, but if you want the bodysuit feel/look then try the fashion/designer fabrics. Be prepared to order online, but still go to Joaanes and feel the fabric choices, and ask some more questions.

PVC pipe weighs less than a metal flag pole would, and most cons don't allow metal poles anyway. Get a pvc pipe, spray paint it silver.
Also, polyester is very flammable, so avoid burning it. Best bet would be to make two flags and sew them together, but I have a feeling you aren't willing to put much work into this, so hem the edges, and if even that is too much work, use fray check.

Did it free hand, made up the templates from memory.

The shape looks great... But there's a few shitty parts...
Hoot glue pooling over, and small gaps.
How do I make it so these look nice, when I paint it?

>> No.7322574

>>7322530
Fill the gaps with glue, melt the excess hot glue flat with the tip of your glue gun.

I assume you'll be painting it, right?

If so, the paint (if done right) will cover all that up in the end, so it's fine to fill the small gaps with glue.

So my cosplay requires a jacket to have crinoline sewing into it for poof at the bottom of it.

There's the main fabric, interfacing, lining, and crinoline. Someone suggest I put the crinoline in before lining. But I don't know if it's possible to do that because I'm supposed to do the lining before pattern pieces get sewn together.

How should I approach this? baste the lining in, sew the jacket together, undo the basting stitches, sew in the crinonline, then re-sew the lining?

For all the ones I looked at, they're made to order.

Original spoonfeed-anon here.
The description says "As the cosplay is made by hands, it takes about 15 days, when it is ready after you finished the payment, it will be shipped by EMS with tracking number and normally takes 5-14 days to reach you.(depend on the custom clearance, Location and Country, some will take longer time)."
Make an initiative and send the seller a message right now. It'll be daytime for them anyways so they'll probably reply fast. Make SURE with them that they can get it to you by the time you want it and will not be interrupted by CNY. Most ebay stores probably don't update their listings regarding CNY holiday. If they say it's okay, then sweet.

Nevertheless I agree with >>7325043, don't cosplay just because your friend pressured you into it; they're using you as an accessory.
