I'm going, at least for Saturday. I live pretty close, so I figure I'll check it out.

The commercials are TERRIBLE. And there spokes-girls are mostly mediocre-at-best cosplayers.

>> No.7291723

Not going. Don't feel like dealing with the clusterfuck that is Mike's Cons or the fact that Heroes of Cosplay will be there. No point entering the contest if it's going to be rigged, and that's the only thing I usually like doing anyways since his panels usually suck and the dealers room is sub-par at best.

>> No.7291784

Nooooooooooooooope. After the last Supercon I have absolutely no desire to go to any more cons run by this guy. They would have to get Benedict Cumberbatch as a guest to get me to go, and even then that's debatable.

>> No.7291816

Let me start of by saying I absolutely hate Broder's cons and they have always been horrible since I've started going to them. Unfortunately, as someone who loves to cosplay, since I'm from Miami, this is one of those cons I pretty much need to go to since I want to cosplay so badly. I pretty much never go to any panels and I just walk around talking to friends all day while getting pictures taken.

So yes, I'm going. I have two cosplays planned, which is nice, since usually I'll only have one available at a time. I plan on trying to watch the HoC stuff pan out, but unfortunately I'm not entering the costume contest, so I may not get too much entertainment.

She does Harley too and swears shes the best and ridicules every other Harley she sees.

I am really scared to watch her ego become bigger.

>> No.7298708

Their list of guest cosplayers is hilarious. Heather1337 is one of the biggest fake cosplayers ever. She only know Star Wars and even then her costumes are all bought. JeniferAnn is her little tagalong that noone knows or give too shits about. Looks like the convention feel for their bought likes. And seriously Alexia Jean Grey is a total cunt in person and uses everyone around her. The rest, other than Yaya, are all no names.

>> No.7298735

^ True.

Alexia is a complete cunt, that gets used by at least 1/2 the cosplay community. These girls are nobodies. Mike Broder finds them, promotes them and buys their likes. Their costumes suck, their personalities are worse. They act like they are the queens of cosplay at cons and they really aren't shit, they haven't put in their work and they don't deserve any credit or exposure. Down in South Florida it is a "bought" market for cosplay girls. Models upon models just joining up for the likes.

>> No.7298793

>>7298708
>>7298735
I've personally never had a bad experiences with Alexia, not to discount you two at all mind you.

The sad part is, I'm a guy, and Ill never get any form of status down here even though my costumes are of equal quality or slightly better depending.

I mean the only guy we had down here was what? Logan, shit that guy may have well of been a catty bitch with the way he acted.

>> No.7298816

>>7298793
This, and it sucks. I've only known of Logan, and he's pretty much a girl what with the way he acts. I don't think I know any other male cosplayers, save for one that I've known personally for years, and he's unknown to the community mostly. It's ridiculous.

South Florida is probably the worst place for a cosplayer right now. Everyone is outshone by the "Supergirls of Supercon" and they look retarded. What sucks the most is that that's what the public sees of the cosplay community. They never actually see anything remotely good and it shoves the name further into the dirt.

>> No.7298823

>>7298816
Who is the unknown person? Get that name out there man/madame!

South Florida does suck several forms of ass. I suggest we try and change it as much as possible.
Disregard drama, acquire cosplays.

>> No.7298826

>>7298823
Haha I don't know if he's into being so popular or not. He just recently started making really amazing props and I've commissioned him, so I'll at least try to get the name out that way.

And yeah, that's pretty much what I do. I've only ever volunteered at Yasumicon, and there's no way I'll be a part of Broder's cons. I just go, possibly get in using a friend's vendor pass, and walk around in cosplay. I'm paying my way in this time, but I go for the friends and not for the shitty con usually.

>> No.7298837

>>7298826
I don't think i've ever paid to get into broder's conventions and as of a couple of years ago I made the decision that would never actually pay to do so.
Yet somehow I'm still going to animate, I just keep getting free passes.

The only good cosplayers guys down here I think I can name is Aron, Ben, and Larry. Jessie is an amazing prop/costume guy but doesn't wear any costumes just makes them.

I wish I could throw myself on that list but I am only decent at best, once I get some more free time after Mega however I'm gonna go on a costuming rampage.

>> No.7298858

>>7298837
Hm, I don't know any of those, but then again I've only recently started really making cosplay friends, and I've only met friends of non-cosplayers in the past.

Ben - Gundam, and other stupidly awesome mechs (also goes by temjin on here)

I don't know if I've met any of them. Unfortunately I maybe only know about three or four people who go on /cgl/, aside from the ones I met through this thread. I know another friend named James and he cosplays with his sister usually, but she's gotten pretty big lately and is even in a book, from what I've heard.

>> No.7299041

There's actually alot of talented male cosplayers in South Florida. They just don't get noticed because the females are getting shoved down everyone's throats.

Aaron (the Dr. Doom guy), his friend Grifter who does a sweet Red Hood, there's a really kick ass Joker down there, Merc With A Mouth Cosplay (popular Deadpool cosplayer) as well as an Asian kid who does a cool Nightwing and is pretty well known. I saw the Gundam guy once too and hes incredible!

Like I said, lots of talent down here but it's dwarfed by dime a dozen nobody girls.

CONFIRMED:

Heroes of Cosplay will be at Animate! Miami and will be shooting the SATURDAY COSTUME CONTEST. Meaning that the cast will be entering and this particular costume contest - the one based on pre-judging and craftsmanship.

As this is the contest I am entering, I am not sure how I feel about this. I am really hoping nothing is rigged or suggested to the judges. I will do my very best personally and maintain a watchful eye on my competitors. I will report back with details as soon as I get home that Saturday night.

Were the cosplayers actual cosplayers or people who were hired by HoC to solely attend the event?

>> No.7313082

The "Heroes of Cosplay" cast members were really nice. I spoke to one of the new male cast members in the line-up and he seemed genuinely nice and sociable. I saw the female cast members that were there competing (Holly, Jessica, and Chloe) and from what little interaction I had with them, they were great. We fist-bumped and complimented each others' costumes. The girls were all together in a group from Dragon Age, the guy was in an armored costume (Digimon, I think?).

What did suck donkey balls was the crew of Heroes of Cosplay taking FOREVER with the contest. Cosplay contests usually aren't the example of organization, but this was a clusterfuck.

We were supposed to start lining up at 7:15, which we did. Over the next 2 hours we waited and were rearranged (by number, by division, sides of the room, back of the room...) Before the contest began they had the audience go through a bunch of different fake reactions, the MC requesting "cheer like you just saw a sexy lady cosplayer!" "cheer like you saw a huge guy in armor!" etc. This took about 30 minutes, and the audience was exhausted. They messed with the lighting for quite a while. It was just a mess.

For the purposes of TV, some pre-screened cosplayers were stopped and asked questions on stage. Of course the cast members were stopped and asked questions for a while, but a few locals were asked questions as well.

The "deliberation" was total BS. Everyone was pre-judged HOURS before, so the winners should have already been selected by then. Usually at Animate and Supercon events, the winners are announced within 10 minutes of the last person doing his walk-on - maybe some minimal deliberation between who gets Best Master's versus BiS, but nothing more. The deliberation took about 45 minutes and half the audience had left by then. I'm pretty sure it was just a ruse so that they could record the "deliberation" and the reactions of the cast members.

>> No.7313115

Overall the cast members were nice and normal, but the filming and staging of the event was terrible. We weren't done until 11:00pm.

Here's the rundown of winners (the list in incomplete, some of them I didn't hear):

Judges Awards: Hiccup (How to train your Dragon 2), Legend of Korra group,
Best Original Character: Dead Space Original Character
Best Creativity Group: Nightmare Before Christmas Group
Best Creativity Individual: Sister of Battle from Warhammer
Best Novice: Jack (Jack and Daxter)
Best Novice Group: Final Fantasy IV group
Best Journeyman: Halo Spartan
Best Journeyman/Master Group: Dragon Age group (Heroes of cosplay Holly, Jessica, and Chloe)
Best Master: red elf (not sure what the series was)
Best in Show: Space Marine from Warhammer - this guy was AWESOME. I think there's a picture of him already, but yeah, no question, he was Best in Show.

As far as anything being rigged for the contest, I don't think it was, at least not glaringly so. Things were scripted, such as the judges questioning certain contestants, but I don't think the awards were blatantly rigged.

That being said, the Heroes of Cosplay group didn't have much competition for the Best Journeyman/Master's category, as there weren't many groups that entered. Some of their pieces looked bought - Jessica's corset and Chloe's leggings. But overall they looked great and I don't question the judges' decision.

yes. I just didn't know how to phrase it.

Usually his Con Chair award goes to something big, something that's a crowd-pleaser, but not necessarily technically good. Like the Meeps, Totoro, etc. So I was expecting him to pick something like that - for this con, I thought the Iron Capt. America would have gotten it, since the crowd responded so well to his flag-waving.

I agree with you the cast members were all super nice. They were a great bunch to meet and hang out with. And GOD YES it was super irritating how long the crew took to set up. They took a long time setting up during pre judging as well and it really cut in on our time to judge around 91 entries.

As for the asking questions on stage, we were told we had to talk to the cast of the show, but the other vosplayers we picked were not pre screened. They had no idea we were going to ask them anything. We had no idea until we decided ourselves to highlight them on stage. That's why during the contest us judges were all whispering to each other deciding who to talk to.

The deliberation....was half BS. There were A LOT of entries to go through. We had to judge over 70 entries in 3 hours, with the crew wanting to refilm whatever parts and take time setting up so it left us exhausted with zero breaks. At 6 pm, when we finally finished, Yaya had to go to her booth to do signings and meetups or whatever, and Zippertan and I immediately went to go get food and vegetate and be exhausted zombies. We did not have a chance to discuss who should win. We didn't get to start deliberating until about 7:45-8PM. And right up until the show finally started, we only covered about 3/4 of who should get what awards. IT WAS REALLY TOUGH. There were some super incredible entries. So for the deliberation after the show, we DID spend half the time picking the rest of the winners, however, the crew made us refilm parts because they couldn't hear when the audience was too loud or they wanted us to talk more about other entries. That's why it took so long. But no, the contest was not rigged in the slightest and we really were having a hard time choosing winners.

The difference between a good con and a bad con is, for me, the events.

The number of events, variety, scheduling, and organization of events. At a good con, you should have the hard decision of choosing which event to attend at any one time. At a bad con, you can't find anything to do.

This past Animate!, there weren't too many events that I found interesting, and I ended up just hanging around for the contest doing noting in particular. Also the set-up of the MACC isn't great for the convention, especially upstairs. The hallways get clogged and it's difficult to find any one room.

I'm hoping with the change of venue in the summer, Supercon will grow into a con that could potentially rival Mega or Metro.

Friday the check in for registration was a clusterfuck. Alot of people seemed to "not be on the list" and had to go through a bunch of hoops just to get the wrist bands they paid for. Friday was dead, there was barely anyone at the con.

Saturday I had a blast, however, the people running the game room and panel rooms upstairs were outright jerks and control freaks, kicking people out of their own panels for pointless reasons. Also, I paid attention and by saturday night I had seen Broder and his posse following a few friends of mine who put on cons in Florida. He considers them "rivals"....He had them followed the entire weekend and I watched his people trash thier flyers for their con.
