Any conversation about catty Frozen cosplayers just isn’t complete without Angi Viper. Since she cosplayed Elsa before the movie came out, she considers herself the Queen of Frozen cosplayers. And since she did it “first,” she thinks that every cosplayer who does the same costume as her is copying her and weirdly considers it her responsibility to promote the film. Maybe she thinks this’ll get her a job as Elsa at one of the Disney parks?

She also makes YouTube videos of herself “singing” the songs. Check out the comments on this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xruADQTPCDg

She also has a habit of lurking on 4chan and looking for mentions of herself (as in this thread here: >>/cgl/thread/7110166)), so I’m sure she’ll send her white knights into this thread sooner or later.

>> No.7312226

>>7312216
Likewise, it's hard for me to understand why what other people do with their money and time matters to anyone but that person.

You're not paying for their cosplay so why does it matter how much artistic license they use? You cosplay for accuracy and for fun while other people will be perfectly happy buying an eBay costume, while others may reuse an old blue prom dress and try bedazzling it. And other people will make their own costume with their own flairs e.g. on Elsa's dress instead of using glitter, maybe they use tiny beads or something.

They're doing their thing, while you do yours, what's not to understand about this? People have different reasons for cosplaying and what they cosplay, expecting everyone to be like you is a bit juvenile.

I think I saw in a recent post of hers that she was adding some rhinestones to the bodice as well. Angela doesn't really go to conventions anymore, so I don't think there's anything wrong with her taking liberties with the costume. I think she's more into making pretty dresses as a future career anyway, rather than going for excellent cosupray accuracy.

How in the hell was Frozen white-washed? None of the characters were ever originally going to be any other race. The damn movie had it's roots from Norway. Now, I've never been to Norway, especially not in the 1700s (which is where I'm guesstimating it's taking place seeing as Flynn/Rapunzel were in a scene and Tangled takes place in that time), but I'm not sure there are a lot of other races that aren't "white" there. I am guessing this recolor is a Tumblr recreation.

I obviously was not around in that time period either but when I visited Scandinavia a few years ago and spent a few days in each country, I mostly saw white people with the occasional "POC".

Leave it to Tumblr to claim racism in a film set in a country and time when there weren't many people of different races there.

Not to mention the original story The Snow Queen, written by Hans Christen Andersen, published in 1845 was written in a time when populations did not have as much freedom to move as seen today.

I don't get why they were trying to argue that Norwegians are anything other than neon white, either. They were trying to argue that the Sami people are much darker and the movie was mis-representing the culture. Some Sami are more olive-toned, but from what I have seen, the vast majority are fair.

To keep this on topic, has anyone done a cosplay of Anna's green and gold dress yet? I've only ever seen it on a dress form and even then I wasn't a fan. I'd really like to see it worn.

>> No.7312296

>>7312276
Since you want accuracy, use movie clips to find the best color. Promo images aren't always the final design you see in the films anyway e.g. a lot of the "gradients" people used aren't necessarily carried through in the film too. Also you need to consider that anything darker is also accounting for shadows and shading. I lined mine with a darker blue but that's because it's what I had.

What pisses me off is that I'm scandinavian as well, finnish to be exact, and my culture is totally different from "poc" culture.. This movie had some takes on sami people, my ancestors. In every way I felt this movie pay some respect to Northern people. Our North is different than your multicultural godblessmurrica, and I love it that way.
Saying that Frozen needs po(p)c(orn) is offensive to me, as I feel my culture is not being respected and not taken seriously.

Swede here, and I agree. I really enjoyed the movie because I love the original story and it is nice to have a movie that takes place in scandinavia.

There is a whole tumblr of how rasist Frozen is against PoC - thiscouldhavebeenfrozen on tumblr, where many people say they wanted it to be in Mongolia or such countries. The author of the tumblr also claims that there is NO culture in Frozen so it's NOT set in Scandinavia. I can agree that they have simplified a lot of culture aspects but I stillt hink it's pretty clear that it's supposed to take place in one of the scandinavian countries. I don't go and neglect that Pocahontas took place in America or that Brother Bears took place in Inuit culture.

I'm Norwegian.

Norway was under Danish regime pretty much all the time before 1814, so the people were largely Danish around 1700. Either way, most people where white as fuck, and when I say most I mean 99.999% of the population.
The country was too far away and too insignificant to have many travelers from far away, most of the foreigners in the country were German or such.
Kristoff, who is the only Sami in the movie, is white, which is fine. Most Sami are white and the ones who aren't white are tanned, they're not... olive-skinned because they are born that way most of the time, it's because they tan in the strong sun.
Now, the Snow Queen was written by a Danish man, H.C Andersen, and the story probably takes place in Denmark. IDK why Disney decided to move it to Norway, because they fucked up Nordic culture something bad with this film.
It takes place in Arendal, but there are things from Swedish and Finnish culture there? And there's giant mountains right next to Arendal? And the dock from Bergen is supposed to be there? And there are Samis that far south in this period of time? All of this is bullshit.

Bottom line, Frozen has a lot of historical inaccuracies and was problematic in it's portrayal of Norwegian culture. But not having POC is not why it's bad.

The movie didn't take place IN Norway, it draws its stylistic design from there. You probably know a hell of a lot more than I do about Denmark, Sweden, Finland, and Norway... but I'm just saying what I know. Arendelle is in a made up country that takes style advice from Norway.

I'm from Arendal and from what it looks like to me, the movie is placed in Tromsö. There are no mountains around here for miles.
We were however not culturally Danish and the "storbonde"("great farmer") was very similar to a king in many places.
The dock from Bergen is also not that unique in architecture, mostly in size.

As >>7312927 said, it's just inspired by Norway, not actually in Norway.

But Snow Queen doesn't take place in Denmark because they travel through Lapland in the original story. The original story probably takes place in northern Norway, Sweden or Finland.

However, I don't even think the head character from the orginal story, Grete, were supposed to be Sami because its said in the story that Grete and Kaj lives in a big city and that their houses were so close they could easily climb over to each other. Grete meet Sami women like the Lappish and Finn woman, but she's probably not Sami herself.

I just wished they kept to the original story, that would've been more interesting.

I think a lot of the more reasonable criticisms of Frozen revolve not around the movie itself, but the way Disney churns out films that are supposedly intended for a white demographic. In other words, lots of people want more diversity in the release of films and they are rolling their eyes at Frozen because it was the third princess film featuring an all/mostly-white cast that Disney put out in the past 3 years.

Y'all can disagree all you want about the criticism of cultural representation/portrayal in the media; I'm just saying that I've found these arguments to be a bit more sound than "Elsa should have been black" which seems to be the only Tumblr shit anyone is responding to.

>> No.7312976 [DELETED]

>>7312969
It's been said before tons of times, and I'll say it again. The reason disney puts out so much "stuff for/about white people" is because it's the only stuff they have to go on. A lot of african folklore wasn't very well recorded, and it's difficult for them to gain rights to/translations of a lot of asian or indian folklore. And honestly, the USA is a english speaking country and so they go with english native or english translated fairy tales. All other countries do the same thing, they just don't have as much racial diversity so no one cares. So it's not so much about trying to hide that kind of thing, it's about the ease of taking pre-existing media and churning it out.

It's more laziness than anything else, even with prince and the frog the story was pretty damn generic and could have had a white cast and people would have said it was shit.

There's actually a lot of Asian fairy tales that are recorded? Like Chinese versions of Cinderella-story variations.

Plus they can always adapt a fairy tale or story and set it someplace else, like how they adapted Hamlet into the Lion King.

Not disagreeing with you about the laziness + genericness that they aim for, though.

Many tribal nations' mythology and fairy tales are oral lore and would never have been written down if it weren't for other cultures being interested in them. Many Maori tales only survive thanks to Alexander Wyclif Reed, who was a white bloke that remembered to write things down. One tribe may have certain beliefs and another some different ones, so it's also kind of hard to gather them all in one place and they're easily lost. For example, "Kia Hora Te Marino" has really vague origins and only people from that very tribe and those close to them will know where it came from. I didn't know until some guy was tipped off by a lady of the aforementioned tribe and wrote a blog post about it, and I'm Maori myself.

The same goes for any other culture's story, and if they wanted to they could just find the story online.

I totally agree with you on all counts. I'm not going to shit on a movie because it has all/mostly white cast. Especially when the story is based on a culture that is predominately white. That's a small part of a bigger problem and I can't get why they're focusing on it. And anyway, just because the Sami, Celtics and Vikings are "white cultures" doesn't mean they don't deserve a fair representation. Like you, I wish they'd just try something else for a change.

Do I wish that they tried to appeal to and market themselves to a wider range of people? Yeah. Am I wary of how well they can accomplish that without shameless pandering? Of course. Even if they have done well with it it in the past. As well as can be expected, anyway.

That's generally how tumblr sjw are in general about representation. I remember someone in the SNK fandom bitching about how there wasn't enough representation of different gender identities and claiming Hanji and Nanaba "weren't enough". They are also quick to forget more positive depictions of sex, gender, race, sexuality, 'etc.' of a story for one "problematic" thing they disagree with. Or even if the author has said/done something they don't like. I think it's the same with Frozen.

It sucks to belong to a minority group of society that gets shat on either through poor representation or stereotyping. But seriously, tumblr. Get your shit together.

Have a Kristoff Cosplay.

Sami people were not represented well ENOUGH in Frozen, it was all quite pathetic. They also need to stop fucking up cultures so bad in every movie they make.

Tumblr people need to understand there are bigger problems than Frozen not having an African-American in it, and need to understand their own views are problematic. Still, it takes a lot of effort to adapt it into a PG cartoon/movie as a lot of them aren't like that in the original, and they have to tiptoe around any things that might be considered racially insensitive so that entitled mummies and whiny internet denizens don't go whinging about how they are "lyk so offended" about this or that. Unlike >>7313003 I actually don't think Disney is racist at all, but since their target audience is first and foremost little children they need to be careful with the content and please the parents at the same time, which is no easy task at all.
Like I mentioned in >>7313004, some nations' mythology and lore isn't that well documented to boot. I haven't even been in this thread yet but what the fuck are we doing arguing about historical accuracy for a fantasy movie?
Is Arendelle an actual kingdom? No?
Yeah, it was based on a Scandinavian fairy tale. But at most all you can say is that the setting is loosely inspired by Norway, I don't even think that you can argue believably for any actual time period the film is based off. character design/architecture are typical pseudo-medieval fantasy designs.

most of those paintings that were made of POC before the 19th century were made not because POC were as common as you seem to believe, but because they were such a rarely-seen minority in Europe that they were painted for essentially novelty factor. it was really unusual to see any PoC at that time in those countries who had obtained the personal wealth necessary to privately commission an artist. Sometimes they were painted because they were someone rich's illegitimate daughter or favored manservant, but this does not mean that those populations existed in abundance. you can claim that disney is shitty and racist and close-minded because they didn't include any people of color in Frozen but it sounds just as ludicrous as a white person complaining that Mulan and Aladdin should've had more westerners in the story because historical trade routes would've totes brought them in.

Usually you get people saying how people there are these hyper-religious assholes but most of them were really interested in how I celebrated (holiday) and our customs, as opposed to the "say Jesus is luv or you go to hell xoxo" that you keep hearing in stories around the internet. For the most part, stories are just stories and it's only one side that's telling them so you can't grasp the reality that well. I really like the effect! That's a nice use of materials too. I personally love seeing all the different things people are using for their bodices beyond hand-cutting sequins (which is no less interesting or impressive, but it's nice to see variety)

>Though I wish it was longer, it looks so stumpy on the dressform
It does look really short but if you compare it to the where the bodice hits on that dressform, I would guess that the person making this has a thick waist and is short-waisted to boot. Elsa's bodice stops at the natural waist, then dips downward in the front, which is what this person's bodice does - it's just that their waist is higher and their body is not willowy and long like the characters in the film so they adjusted accordingly.

It's probably one of those things where the dress will "make more sense" when you see it with the skirt and moreso on the person. I've got a long torso so the bodice I made for my dress looked absurdly long when it was just on the dressform by itself, but when I attached the skirt etc. and tried everything on, it was in proportion for me.

The problem is tumblrites have latched onto this and decided that it is how the world works. Giving you the benefit of the doubt on your intentions, but elaborating on the fact that racial inequality happens all over the world in so many different ways that using such a broad term and plastering it over all groups is really ignorant.

And I definitely wouldn't say the US has a 'white supremacy' problem. I haven't seen any magnitude of racism here like I've seen in Asia and some of Europe, by far- of course maybe that is my location. But the US is so much more progressive-thinking, as evidenced by the very existence of the SJW culture. It's highly progressive if illogical, and I think that says something for the time and place it is originating from.

Yo /cgl/, getting away from race stuff for a bit to ask some fabric advice.

I've been playing with a few options for Elsa's skirt and the two I'm deciding between are a matte satin with glitter painted onto it or layering satin under a sparkle organza. I've attached a picture of the satin + organza so y'all can get an idea of what it looks like. I really like the effect (although it's a bit much with flash [and a little blurry, sorry]) but my main concern is that the organza will be too stiff to be part of the skirt. It is a fairly form-fitting skirt for the most part so I'm thinking it might be okay, but I was wondering if anyone with experience with organza might chime in? I really hate this mindset, because honestly if every disney movie had a slew of Italian, black, mexican, asian, and and egypitian leads people would find something else to complain about. They would need to have a gay character too - but it can't end there, they would need a bisexual one, a transgender, and maybe a cross dresser. One with an abusive past and another with a single mother.

The characters would have to have rainbow hair and rainbow eyes, freckles, braces, various heights, sizes, face shapes and disabilities. No it's not ridiculous to want more diversity in disney movies, but it's impossible to include EVERYONE.

Honestly I think disney does an amazing job making characters that are easy to relate to. I know people of all different shapes, sizes, genders, and races that loved and really connected with Elsa and Anna and many other previous princesses. Because they are mature enough to realize that the story and characters personalities are a lot more important then the pretty blonde packaging.

I don't think you thought out what you typed here. All kinds of crazyass bullshit that is not reality based happens in fairy tales. Think about that for one brief second. Sure history can have something to do with fairy tales but it doesn't have to.

Disney reasonably could have taken Frozen and set it in some Inuit tribe in North America. They have no trouble taking other stories and butchering them to their liking. The whole point about Disney is diversity. If this movie had main characters as PoC instead of white girls from Norway, I think that many Norwegians would be upset.

The story that Frozen is based off of is a Dutch story that took place in Europe where there were no many PoC, especially for the time period the story was produced in.

Taking Frozen and "putting it in some Inuit tribe in North America" would have gone against the original story (see above paragraph, also google The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Anderson) and made many fans of the original story angry.

Look, I've worked with children, they don't differentiate from black, white, yellow, anything. Not unless they have a strong influence in the family or they're older. Frozen is a chance to explore a new culture that most don't get to. By choosing to base Frozen in Norway they showed how life was in or around the 1700s with the architecture, clothing, jobs, etc.

I don't think enough people think about that.

>> No.7314805

>>7314797
TBH, I don't think Frozen even takes enough from the original story to be considered a rendition of it.

At least in their other stories, the basic plot was the same (with the exception of the added happy ending) and the characters were mostly the same.

Frozen has... a snow queen. An innocent girl. A frozen heart.

That's about it.

However, it's still clearly located somewhere in Scandanavia, and as you said, there were no people there that weren't white. People keep bringing up the fucking Sami, but they're white too. Slightly tanned and some of the older photos show some with frostbite on their faces, but they're white.

I think there are people assuming, "Oh! It's a tribe of native peoples! They must have dark skin, despite living in a region where dark skin is a completely useless evolutionary trait!"

I think you're also forgetting things like Disney Channel and the "it's a small world" show on disney.com which is about all different races (I can't tell you anymore than that because I haven't watched it).
