Look at all that classic anime in one shot.
Devil Hunter Yoko was the first anime I saw after Sailor Moon. I rented it from Blockbuster.
I thought I was getting Bubblegum Crisis and someone had put it in the wrong box.

My ritual when I was allowed to rent anime: I took a shower and then soaked in the bath, made some ramen, and some green tea so that I could be just like some regular person in Japan watching a show. It was 1997.

You can imagine my shock when she transformed and there was actual nudity!

So, fellow oldfags who still go to cons, lemme ask you all... How do you handle the con scene? I'm hitting that point where I'm older than most of the people attending (esp. at anime cons rather than comic/scifi/general nerd cons) and don't really get along with the excitable teenagers. It's alienating to not have a group into the same things I am, especially since most of the youngins aren't exactly the most socially adept to begin with. But I don't want to stop attending cons. :/

It used to be you could go to the forums for a con and make friends to meet up with in advance, but lately it seems like con forums aren't popular, and when they even exist it's difficult to trawl through the junk and find other adults to hang with.

I went to Scon last year and worked in the dealers hall for a friend. I decided that I am probably giving up anime cons all together. I didn't have an awful time but I definitely dont connect with the younger generation because I am not overtly excitable/obnoxious nor am I really into all the latest trends in anime. Well honestly I'm not hanging with the usual crowds anymore.
You can't just walk up and talk to people anymore though sometimes people are friendly enough after you ask for a picture. It's the easiest way I can start a conversation.

I don't think I look old but to the 16 yr olds dressing up they certainly know I don't look like them.

Last anime con I hit up I ran into some very old acquaintances. Only one of them was the same old friendly we had always been with Quick EEE! How are you!. Everyone else acted like they were too important to acknowledge we used to be the only 10 cosplayers in Atlanta and we used to hang out all the time.

So the solution is either go to Georgia or don't go at all, lol well that's depressing. Thanks though.

It's so sad. I wish anime cons attracted/retained the older crowd more than they do. I feel like I'm finally at a point in my life where I could really enjoy cons to their fullest - I'm an adult, have my own income so I have the skills and money to make costumes, the money to buy merch I want and the confidence to actually talk to people and get to know them. I could volunteer and host panels and so on... But the crowd is special snowflake excited tumblrfags who only want to talk about who they ship and whether Eren or Levi is hotter.

In a way it makes me wish I had spent more time at cons when I was younger...

CostumeCon's another one I'm looking forward to, especially since it's in my neck of the woods this year (Toronto, in the same area as Anime North) and it has student rates ($25/ticket) if you're still in school. There are also group rates if you're not in school, which would save you nearly 20 bucks per person. I'm excited to learn a lot at the various costuming panels.

I'm all for respecting peoples' identities/genders, but good fucking lord. I finally found an 18-19 year old group (with only ONE trans person!) to hang out with during the con but afterwards they fucked me over when I went to visit them.

What I've never understood is why they feel the need to put all that personal info into an introduction. I'm trans, but I don't go around saying "I'm [birth name], call me [chosen name], and I'm trans!" The drama has massively settled down in the past year though, so there's not really much to follow. With AE & CE merging with this Northwest Fanfest business (why it's not called WestCOAST I'll never understand), AR is kind of left on its own. It's better this way in the long run, so hopefully it all works out.

Fan Expo I had the most fun at, as I was interested in a lot of the guests, so I braved the long lines for panels. The dealers room was ok, but too cramped.

That being said, I have heard gossip back and forth from some friends, but nothing too dramatic. Even the anti-AR people are commending them for their marketing and guests.

Well, maybe that sort of stuff will subside after NWFF does their first con this year and is no longer officially competing with AR as CE & AE.

I miss the old days at SFU, but at the same time, I appreciate the new content different conventions are bringing. At least they're getting the hint we don't need like 5 anime cons.

While I find it a bit more difficult to just make random new friends at cons like I used to, I still manage to and I still have a good time no matter what.

I don't get involved in the cosplay scene too much. So when I do cosplay, I do it for my own shits and giggles, as well as for the challenge and love for the character. If other people like it, great. But I'm not doing it for them.

There's just certain things that I can't do anymore, like go into a rave. Because I'll be hit on by some kid who's old enough to be my son and that's awkward. So my con nights usually involve hitting up bars with people my age and chilling with my one or two drinks.

I remember getting into cosplay via magazines and ezboard forums when I was still in middle school. Kipi was the first big name cosplayer I knew of, and Chii/Freya were the characters I remember being overcosplayed in a way SnK is today.

I was never allowed to go to cons, but regularly cosplaying has been my number one dream (as unfortunate as that is). I used to do closet cosplays of the kids from Digimon back in middle school, and my home ec sewing project was a cosplay or Rika/Ruki from Tamers.

Only a handful of my original wishlist has stayed the same. I've had to toss out a lot of characters simply because I don't look like a teenager anymore, like Etna from Disgaea 1, Linia from the Evolution games on Dreamcast, Komugi Nakahara, and Lilia Pascalle from Galerians.

Regardless, a lot of my wishlist is from Dreamcast and PS2 games, and anime that came out between 2001 and 2005.

Preeeetty much.

Nerds are having the same thing happen to them that happened to punks and goths; their entire look, culture, and lifestyle is being butchered and commercialized. It will die eventually, not completely, but we at least won't be seeing complete self-entitled bitches cropping up every other month pretending to be cosplayers for nothing other than e-fame.

>>7308231
The sad part is, I have a friend who is 25 just like me who is progressively getting more and more into that shit. He's started using "PoC" pretty regularly.

>There's just certain things that I can't do anymore, like go into a rave.
Oh god I can't stand the raves at cons. I tried one at Ota a couple years back. I don't enjoy being rubbed up against and shoved around by sweaty people. Most of the people I encountered in there weren't even drinking age, or were but were terribly trashed.

I hardly even go to panels, either, because much of the things I like are a decade old so the most attention they get from panels is if there's a genre-specific panel that features mention of them.

Ah, I liked that Kanaeda cosplayer. I saw him almost every year at AX. We were even pretty like minded about anime. Used to see him post on the cos.com anime board. Sure enough, him and I were opinionated in the same way. (We were both kinda elitist about anime, but never about cosplay) Kinda predicted the problems with the newer "fad" anime fans that came in post 2000's (no respect for the classics, more of the party crowd than thinking crowd, and most aren't even into anime anymore)

I went to AX2013 for a single day this year. It wasn't my cup of tea, but I saw a gorgeous Ryoko cosplayer, took her picture, and thanked her for doing the cosplay. I tried to talk and connect with people, but everyone was either very young, or I would only see them all of once the entire day.

Anyways, self posting. AX 2000.

My girlfriend at the time was dressed as Akane.

Also, I've been wondering...how much does it cost to run a convention? I'd been kicking around the idea of a "Classi-Con" (classic anime convention for the older crowds, emphasis on fan panels, not so much partying, lots more socializing)

I want to start, and I'll be 25 this year. No fucks given. It's not like you have a large red "23" or "25" on your badge for every attendee to see. I do feel like I missed out on all the 90s-00s fun in this thread. You can't just sit around feeling sad though, you have to begin somewhere. I don't worry about this "current" cosplay scene. I'm sure it goes through waves like everything else, and all the spotlight grabbers will move onto the next big thing once the attention dries up. And it always does.

I'll still go to a few cons this year to see friends and such, but I'm not going to bother creating anything new, and I might not even dress up in my older costumes.

My favorite con has a max attendance of maybe 500-1000 people (I'm... really bad at estimation) and it's so much fun. They actually get decent people in for panels (Last year they had Vic Mignogna, and a few other people from Soul Eater) and everyone is just really great, plus there aren't huge hoards of homestucks, there are just small groups of them.

>getting the actual costume online if you can't sew.

A big part of me wishes this had never become a thing to do. It made it much easier for the bandwagoners to jump on in and be fake.

Another part of me wants everyone to be included and have fun even if they don't have any skills.

I miss knowing for a FACT that if someone was dressed up as Tamahome or Shayla Shayla we could talk up and down about the show. Then I could admire something they did on the costume and they would tell me about the crap they had to go through to make it.

It's hard to switch to the mindset that a lot of what I am looking at online wasn't even touched by the wearer until it arrived in the mail. That if I talk to them they'll just say "Oh I didn't know that happened in the show, I'm only 3 eps in, don't spoil me." And if I am curious how they got the collar to look perfect or I admire the fabric used they can't tell me jack shit about anything.

My thoughts exactly. I love the fact that cosplay has become an easier thing to get into, which equals more cosplayers for me to befriend. And hey, cos-PLAY, right? But then the bitchy side of me kicks in with snide comments about mass production and flash-in-the-pan fans. And worse, people are getting to the point of claiming an excellently crafted costume is on the same level as something from Hot Topic. Give me a break.

Yeah, I know how you feel. Cosplay seems to mean something totally different now. I always remember it being more about signaling to other fans or otherwise demonstrating your interest/love for a series. Arguably there's nothing really preventing a bought costume from serving the same purpose, but it seems like all my friends care about these days are photoshoots.

Like, it's never about wearing a costume all day to enjoy a con anymore (at least with my friends now, maybe this is more an isolated attitude, idk), it's about seeing how many costume changes they can fit into one afternoon and whether they can get a photographer to take pictures while pretty much ignoring the rest of the convention. Maybe I'm just being butthurt because I hate photoshoots and think they're extra pointless if you just bought your outfit (but maybe that's a dated attitude too, rather than the photos being a record of your work/accomplishment they're more of an ends in and of themselves).

Well things were hard to get then. Based on a seller's connections they had all kinds of things. Now stuff is easy to get because of the boom and everyone has the same shit at every booth.
Plus internet sales let us just buy what we want straight from Japan now.

Hell, in some malls there are anime stores. So you don't even have to wait for a con if mom won't let you use her card for something.

So yeah, things were more special then. Now it's just a room full of "Seen it, seen it, have it, have 2 of them, seen it, bought one a min ago, seen it...."

Call me crazy, but I actually love that most of these cosplays suck. Cosplay back in the 90s had very little to do with any sort of elitism, nobody cared if you were "good" or "accurate" or not, they just wanted to dress up to show their fan spirit and everyone else loved it because OMG ITS THAT CHARACTER I LOVE THIS IS THE HAPPIEST DAY OF MY LIFE etc. Back then people actually loved anime and took pride in being an otaku because it was something that was theirs and few others knew about it. It was truly the happy times of conventions.

Nowadays that's all gone. People just cosplay to try to show off and turn the con into their personal fashion show so they can garner photos, followers and facebook likes. Costumes have gotten better, but the spirit is gone.

In any case, have some classic Yaya.

But it raises the bar of what is expected, drastically. Not only in construction and materials, but how the person fucking looks.

Prior to 2007, nobody bemoaned about not being able to pull-off a character for something as simple as "my nose isn't right". It's just one giant thing that grinds my gears. Here I was, 12 years ago cosplaying characters I loved, knowing I looked nothing like them and having a fun time making and wearing them at a con. Then here's some kid fussing over being an exact visual representation of the character.

I mean it's cool and all when you do look the part, but I feel like that's all it's become with a majority of people and less of the "I really love this character!"

Remember the old rules the community used to live by? The things we used to do?

If you watch a fansub, you buy the legit release at least up to where you watched.

Purchase DVDs instead of downloading everything. Support studios so we can see more.

Avoid bootlegs at all cost.

Make friends, have viewings, and introduce others to shows that normally may not try. Especially if they can't afford to follow that many shows at once.

Cosplay as characters you love. Trying is better than not.

Anime Cons were once a year near you and if you wanted to attend more then you were traveling to other states.

If shows being produced were actually good then I would still follow this rule but their not. Its either moe crap or slice of life high school garbage that this oldfag just cant stand/relate too. And I used to buy all of my fave series on DVD. My most prized DVDs collection is the full Kenshin series that they released in 3 box sets. Cost me boat loads of money but worth every penny.

Also I think another problem is that fandoms have a high turn overrate now. I have friends who say "ZOMG LOVE THIS SERIES" and then after it's over they are onto the next one. Which is fine but it would explain why none of them would be willing to buy the DVDs because its just a small phase for them.

I actually wrote an essay about this is high school for my junior year. It was a big deal, talking about how the industry was dying, the history, and the evolution of it all. It was so sad... I'm bummed by how it's changed, and not for the better. I really miss the old days when people tried very consciously to not kill the thing they loved. Why can't people legally support the stuff like they used to?

>Why can't people legally support the stuff like they used to?

Because the US industry effectively suicided in like 2006-7.

I probably buy more legit stuff now than I ever did 15-years-ago, but that's probably because I have money now and the internet makes acquiring non-bootleg shit infinitely easier.

I'm honestly more concerned with this bizarre trend of people 'not having time' to even actually enjoy series/games/etc because if they actually sat down and watched anime, they wouldn't have time to cosplay from it.

I cant help but think this would only be the case for games. You can just put on series in the background while your sewing even if your watching a sub version. Maybe they need to cut back on their tumblr/fb browsing. I have younger friends that are amazed by how many video games I play but when I explain I just prioritize that shit over tumblr and fb they look at me all mystified.

Those kids drive me nuts. I used to work double shifts and then cram in some GTA3/VC/SA or FPS gaming after work. Sometimes I'd veg out on the couch with a joint and watch some anime. Found some good dubs from Pioneer and Bandai while trippin.

Just last night I put in a decent DVD order. Everything Dirty Pair that RightStuf re-issued and the TV series. Next to A!MG and YUA, DP is one of my fav series over the years.
