Here might work, I personally plan on taking a course on armor making in the future(either this summer or next) since there is a place not too far from here that teaches it. The tricky thing is getting snow. Last year this time I went to Croatia to the game called Terra Nova. it was an awesome game but no snow.
And JUST when we started to pack and go home the snow started to fall. We had the second biggest snowstorm in the last decade that time (the biggest snowstorm came months later during march)

funny, we know those ones around here as bear-foot shoes.

Also I did a little bit of research on the subject of landsknecht shoes because I want to be a landsknecht reenactor and I have to tell you the sad thing:
landsknecht footsoldiers doesn't really wore taller boots, but yes the ritters did used taller ones.

Larpers "fight" in the gear, but it's not HEMA (for that go to /asp/). The stuff you're getting hit with is mostly foam and padding, and there's no bonus points for how hard you hit, so your armor doesn't have to be super protecting. When people use actual metal armor, it's for looks/authenticity more than because it hurts to get hit with a boffer.

There are some idiots that'll smack the fuck out of you, but they're generally reviled and told to shape the fuck up, so are pretty rare at established events.

the main difference between cosplay costumes and larp costumes I think is that cosplay go for the look first and foremost and larpers go for practicality first and foremost.
That said you can achieve both but in general terms most cosplay stuff won't survive a larp and most larp stuff doesn't look that good.
Also there are a lot of metal armors on larps, plastic and foam ones are not that common, but that has little to do of the fight, it's because most of them are not experienced foamcrafters so they can't make a believable armor out of those materials

Canon like this shoot foam ball using a air-pressure mechanism (makes a nice big boom sound)

There are other canon that use propane (even bigger boom sound)

balista shoot big arrows and only a small percentage of them are nice to look at (i hate ballistas)

and Arquebuse (atleast at Bicolline) shoot foam ball using a air pump mechanism

no we don't we have other sources as well. written ones too.
and they weren't sewn into the shoes. none of the cloths were.
About the stuff it's important to run-in your shoes. I mean you have to put it on then step in water, wear it while wet and walk/run in it.

This of course only works if it's made out vegetable tanned leather and not modern chrome tanned leather. In the later case it will do absolutely nothing. If it's vegetable tanned then you can shape it to your foot.

also can you tell me what kind of problems did you guys find with the shoes? MAybe I can help where you made a mistake

nothing that interesting. The landsknechte went to attack the gold camp they formed up and everything then the orcs from their camp ran out and went all dynamic entry on them, jumping at the polearms and stuff like them.
It was quiet entertaining to watch them as both group is kind of hardcore ones so they allow themselves to do more things than against other players who may or may not know nothing about fighting.

The Landsknechte had to retreat but it was interesting to see that these guys practiced a lot and they pulled of a pretty good and organized retreet, leaving the wounded to the care of the field hospital as they had insurance and the rest of the group walked back to their camp as I said in an organized manner minimizing the casulties

that pdf is on the site of the Landsknecht camp from Drachenfest so I think it's pretty much permanent. (it didn't changed since I found it)

On Drachenfest there is one Landsknechte camp and you have to talk with the leaders there in one way or another to join them. They have requirements on cloths and weapons and such to join them, as far as I know this pdf contains most those requirements and a little help on how to meet them.

It's not reenactor level stuff but very high quality for a larp

We are just working to get our group started for next summer, but if we get our own thing going, i'm guessing that we'd be interested on international events too at some point.

and Drachenfest looks like a thing that should be experienced at least once, AND if we can do it in Landsknecht-style company, more the better

Its exactly what it sounds like. After discovering faun cosplayers, and joking about how "I'd totally hunt her!", some ca/tg/irls messaged me about being interested in such a thing.

It is well known that I am a historic hunter, so we organized games where I set harmless snares and such in a stretch of woods, and give them a 30 minute head start, before I track and try to catch them before they can get to the home base.

For the more skilled cross country runners and those who know the woods well, I got a hold of an old home-ec baby simulator, that will cry when jostled too much or things get too loud, to simulate a baby being stolen by the fae for a changling.

Its some intense fun. The faun hunts eventually evolved into the Lost Stories and Dark Tales where the Fae and the woods is a key theme.

did I tell you the story when they were ordered to guard the blue camp's gate so they just organized a big ass party right at the gate? So any attacker during the night would had to go through 40-50 people who were there pretty much awake and with weapons and such.
Also from the Triumvirate camp a smaller group come to us that we are partying too hard and maybe we should do it a little less louder.
It's generally a bad idea to bring less people for this than the number of the partying group.

Also later one of them sneaked into the triumvirate camp (the guard at the door asked for identification and he just told him that he left it at his tent) Stole a piece of rock from there (foam rocks that are thrown at the attackers from the walls) and some-when around 4 am they just threw it at the head of one of the triumvirate guards at their tower.

As I said they are awesome people and I met them during a bar brawl (I was the one who started the brawl...)

>> No.7304599

Drachenfest is one of the biggest larps in the world and it takes place in Geramny.
They have usually between 5-8000 participants and it's a one week event.
They have people ALL over the world, I don't have numbers on that but I think it's safe to say that 25% of the people at least are from abroad.

No more than 10% if I were to make a guess, probably less (if we don't count Austrians and Swiss that is). I've seen quite a few people attend that didn't speak a word of German and did get by perfectly.

Yeah but as the German, Austrian and Swiss larping scene is relatively intertwined for purposes of larp I wouldn't really count them as abroad.
I mean you can't really distinguish them from German larpers apart from the accent, and the same amount of 'language barrier' will exist between a north and south German larper, so....

Generally I'd say the biggest truly foreign nationalities at Drachenfest are Spaniards and Italians. Everyone else usually partakes in relatively small numbers.

In my game, they get a list, and an assigned territory. For example:

Goblins:
Area X from 2:pm-4:17pm
Rotate between
*sitting in camp (NPCs can use this time to eat, chit chat, play games etc)
*stalking the main road
*sneaking into "town" to raid and steal stuff
etc.

That group then rotates, and plays another part, like town folks or bandits or whatever.

Combat is dangerous. Certain weapons beat certain armour. Aiming for unarmoured or lightly armoured spots are key. You hit with intent (not full force, but more than a tap).

A hit to an unarmoured limb disables the limb. A hit to the torso, neck or head disables the player. unless you are alone (abandoned by your team, ext) or killed outright (like having your head crushed by a troll), anyone with the stuff can heal you. If you're dead, you'll have to drag the body to a priest, and I hope you have the money...

May as well re-iterate this particular question - is there a decent market for translators at some of the larger games? I've mainly played in smaller Euro-style games, and I've worked as a translator for a few years now, so I figure having a capable translator might be decent at some of these larger games. I'm fluent in Swedish, Icelandic, and English, my German is decent (Dialectally, lived in Kiel for about six months and so that really colours my speech) and my French is workable, but a bit Parisian thanks to the wonders of international schooling and the goddamn French. I've also been making my own quills and inks for a few years now, so there's always room for proper scribes, right?

At least I'm getting cash and groups together for some trips. Bicolline looks to be in the planning stages, and if we can raise airfare, then Drachenfest will likely happen.

Any links to them? I always love checking out the style of writing people go for in their games. It's great fun, and it's always awesome to utilize language skills. I figure my Old Norse is also somewhat useful, but Icelandic is an actual living language and so translating for Icelanders is awesome - they're always so fucking happy to get to use their native language when you meet 'em. Best time I've had in a bar by far.

Going over your magic. What's to stop someone from casting a hex on some monster, then just walking up and stabbing it in the gut? Obviously doing this to a human would have repercussions, but there's definitely cases where I'd think it's hugely overpowered.

Can Harm be parried? Blocking with the hand is mentioned earlier in the document, would that count as being hit?

Yup. That, and he could afford a better helm, that looked how he wanted, was historically accurate etc.

Also, his old helm was sculpted leather over a simple steel spun-top, so it was probably looking beaten to shit.

>>7304934
You can certainly do that... But I doubt that keeping unblinking eye contact in the middle of a fight and while not being able to see where you are stepping makes it a little harder. That also implies you're alone.

Yes, Harm can be parried, but it if touches your body, it deals the damage. Your hand is part of your body.

And being hit is quite obvious. We're been using hollow eggs filled with novelty snappers and flour. Looks cool, sounds cool, and makes you spend time "preparing your spell components".

So is NPCing like the entry level LARP?
Is it usually free so long as you're all NPC all the time or is it just reduced fees?
I'm broke as hell but whacking people with foam seems like great fun.

>> No.7304957

>>7304943
What's the trick you're using for them? Just hollow out the egg, add some flour and poppers, and it's done? It's a really cool component, plus it seems like it could be adapted into a number of different effects.

I an trying to figure out colored powders that wont stain, but so far no luck. Smokebombs (colored and non colored) glowsticks, and these fill a lot of uses.

Depends on what is out of the norm. N'kante the 16thC Bennin warrior of west Africa? Testiclese and his gladiators? Any of our Zulus, Moorish infantry, Greeks, Japanese?

There are households that do practically anything you can think of, if it had contact with Europe before 1700.

Started as a genericelt/viking much to my parent's dismay, and my current embarassment. Evolved into a real period of 400AD merc from Norvgod.

Then I found the light, and the one true centruy, and joined my parents in the 15thC, specifically a Condottieri circa 1460-1480 from Naples, Italy. Most of my clothing is available and common to Italy in the period (including continental fashions, middle eastern clothing etc), but I do have 16thC century clothes mixed in for occasions.

Ah alright, well hopefully I will be able to pull off a viking/norse/swede that would make your parent's proud, I definitely won't be jumping into it until I know for sure that what I am planning is accurate, and Ill be doing my best to make sure my friends are accurate as well. Friends don't let friends be genericelt/vikings. If I was to go with my heritage I would most likely be welsh or german.

Yeah I figured that when I realized all the Japanese samurai dudes were white dudes.

I am curious, as a blacksmith I hope to one day have a little tent at wars or the like, would it be cool to have a forge made from modern things(brake drum, shop vac for blower) or would it be safer to wait until I had something more period?

>> No.7305070

My first suggestion is to not bring anything until you know what you're doing.

Modern forges are fine, but I wouldn't bring a freaking shop-vac that requires a light socket makes lots of noise and is glaringly unperiod. Bellows, hand-crank or induction.

Pic related. Its my portable setup.

as I mentioned before I don't know german, at all. So at Drachenfest I had to hire translators numerous times. And there are a lot of people like me who don't speak german there.

So at bigger, international games there is a market for them (At Drachenfest I always went to the postal service guild to get a translator, although one time we got a giant rat as a translator who's whole vocabulary was "YIP" It was an.... interesting conversation)
Also sometimes there are people who just want to play a foreigner who don't understand the language. Those would hire translators too
