Homestuck hit an unprecedented high because it had such a massive cast and more room for interpretation of visual aspects due to the art style.
SnK has a wide cast, but a really defined uniform so it's harder to be universally appealing.

I think the thing with both fandoms are that they're both popular and their outfits can be as simple or as complex as you want it to be.

With Homestuck, you have the simple default outfits, or the harder God Tier or alternative outfits, and a lot of props as well.

With Shingeki no Kyojin, you have the simple uniform and straps, or you can make it harder by actually creating the 3DMG, cloaks, or do something different and cosplay as one of the Titans themselves.

Though you are right in that while both series have big casts, Homestuck has more variety, whereas with SnK, not so much.

That's true but I still think that variety is key. Compare the number of possible outfits in Homestuck and Hetalia to SNK. You've only really got the uniforms to work with, and even AUs don't vary much from the original. Meanwhile in homestuck it's very common to see one person cosplay half a dozen characters without getting bored.

And SnK, while popular, makes it hard for single cosplayers to stick out as a character since anyone can cosplay a huge portion of the cast by simply swapping out wigs/shirts, which translates into a lot of people not trying because they won't receive as much attention since they look like everyone else in the fandom.

I really hate the way that the masks look personally, and I really like how a lot of PM cosplayers pulled it off without the mask. It probably wouldn't work for WK or anything because the heads are oddly shaped, but I feel like because most of the face is covered it could work

The scalemates are the exact ones from the Kickstarter (which I could rant about, but that's neither here nor there), but they're well constructed, made out of a really soft fabric, stuffed evenly, and all the detailing is clean.
So they're great quality wise, but you have to weigh that vs the price+shipping.

If it's heat resistant, take a flat iron on the lowest setting and work over the problem areas in small pieces, if you're not sure, test on a small piece that you can snip off if it isn't.

I was there, it is a location just a short bit away from one of Swedens biggest cons. They hosted the meetup there so I think it was just random meetup pictures (hence the odd pair of characters). But yeah it's really beautiful, and the surrounding areas of the campus just generally have quite a few good spots for shoots.

For a more "realistic" rather than stylized exile cosplay (Stained, beaten up, largely unhemmed edges because they were literally clothed in rags, etc) would leaving the loose threads from the fabric wearing at the edges be good, or should I trim that?

I feel the need to throw my 2c into this discussion
I've seen a lot of exile cosplays that didn't hem the cloth because, well, the exiles didn't wear professionally made/designed clothes. They wore rags, there were loose ends, etc. As with pic related, there have been quite a few good exile cosplays that I've seen that didn't have hemmed cloth at all in them, and they looked good because they were still fundamentally well-designed, worn, etc.

Hemming is one of the easiest and fastest parts of creating a costume, how would intentionally not hemming for style invalidate the entire thing?

Regarding hems: either hem and shred, or just shred the bottoms. Damaged/weathered edges aren't the same thing as raw. Raw edges left where you cut your pieces will look lazy and dumb. Taking a serrated edge and a lighter to the bottom will make it look "finished", even though its not hemmed.

I usually use my knife edge scissors at an angle and saw through, but razors work. Whatever you're comfortable with.

A lighter's more useful with poly. It keeps the fabric from continuing to fray where you tore it, which looks unpolished after a while. Reduces the chance of dangling threads.

This is clearly a topic you're pretty sensitive about, and it's making you look ridiculous. Sewing is usually an aspect of cosplay, whether the cosplayer is doing it or a commissioner is, and learning it - even the most basic elements - can save you money and make your life easier. It's not for everyone, but if anon has the time and is this miffed about color matching their stuff, they'll probably have an easier go finding fabric in the color they want and making the shirt from a pattern.

Tricksters are usually done well when they have similarly vibrant colors. I've seen way too many tricksters that had one or two vibrant colors and then have the other ones be dull. It's like they completely missed the point of tricksters and went, "eh, good enough!"

What would you suggest for the actual sash? I have a bunch of thick-bore cabling that'd be perfect, but what about the actual sign? Paper, while canon, would just look bad.
Also, what would you recommend in the way of footwear? I don't want to buy a morphsuit only to ruin the feet of it

Also upping saturation in post production also makes Trickster look better in photos from what I can see.

Yeah a few people choose to commission every single outfit and thats fine, but don't pretend like personal craftsmanship and sewing is not an important part of cosplay. Anyways on the topic of Tricksters, I'm also curious if Trickster!Dirk has been done well at all, 'cause I'm considering cosplaying him at some point. Though, I feel like it'd be one of those cosplays where you really should have someone else to accompany you. Whereas with the regular outfits, you can look fine standalone.
