i want to do a gothorita gijinka and im brainstorming on how i should tackle the wig.
i was thinking of doing 3 wigs sewn together somehow and forming 2 on the sides onto foam spheres.
it will probably take me a very very long time to get it to where it's presentable though

for the outfit i just want to do a simple black dress that flares at the end with the 2 big bows, maybe put a peti underneath for volume
idk if i want to sew the bows out of fabric or just use really big white ribbon.
lots of brainstorming though, i've only got the wigs and i'm afraid to dive in lol

I've always wanted to do a pokemon gijinka.

In your opinion, what makes a good gijinka? Is it better to be totally obvious about what Pokemon you're trying to be (incorporating the ears and tail, all that jazz), or is it better to be subtle about it (keeping it to colours and certain shapes/symbols)?

Might depend on what kinda con you're at. There's a pokemon festival in my area so people would be more likely to recognize the outfit. But at a regular con, might be best to have some more distinguishing accessories

I think some of the problems with gijinkas is when people stray to far from recognizability. Even in gijinka fanart. Sometimes you see designs and you can't even recognize what pokemon it is.

I think what makes it harder to recognize is the lack of a paintbrush or the paintbrush tail.

But I think that the key to a good gijinka is just making a quality costume, because there is no real "reference material" or "accuracy", so just make something that looks like real clothes/detailed/high quality. Because then even someone who doesn't know who/what you're supposed to be might still be like, "damn, cool costume."

I've created a whole bunch of gijinkas and I'm no special fashion designer. I guess to help others out, I'd say that you should take the personality of what your gijinka-ing and let that be your flow.

example, here's my Politoed gijinka because Pokemon thread. I was actually inspired from another cosplayer to go with an oversized fleece item, but I wanted to run on the fact that Politoed is adorable.
then once I got an idea, I just sketched out how I wanted to do. And if your no master drawer, you can commission someone to do it for you, or use a flash game to create designs for you.

Speaking of pokemon cosplays. My group of friends and I are planning a baseball themed Eeveelution group. I looked to see if anybody had done a similar group, and surprisingly I haven't really seen anybody do any Pokemon themed sports cosplay groups. It actually comes as a pretty fun idea and I'm a little disappointed nobody's done it.

I got Leafeon for our group. Pretty much it's mostly based off this, and probably adding in the ears to the caps, and some type of logo on the chest and cap.

I think we were also going to be Eevee's representing different cities(since we're all going to be different colors, depending on which gen the Eeveelution is introduced. Like Cerulean City for Vaporeon, and Eterna City for Leafeon.

Only thing I'm not 100% sure on is if we're going to integrate the tails. Closest I can think of is the ones with baseball bats can paint them to match the tail colors. The ones with gloves, not so sure.

My boyfriend and I are wanting to be Nidoking and Nidoqueen for an upcoming con, but we're a little stumped on how to do it. I'm working on a sylveon gijinka and my wig just came in recently, but it's too dark.
Also it's more of a warm pink than a cool pink. (pic related, me comparing the wig to the fabric. excuse my selfpost).
Should I buy a new wig? I don't really want to spend more money though...

Lightening wigs isn't really easy, and might be too much work, depending on how much time you have.
It'd work for the time being if you need it to, but I'd recycle that wig for another cosplay and get a new one for Sylveon.

i don't think it'll make that big of a difference, but to be safe you should probably test a scrap of fabric to see if you like the results and/or test how dyed you want the fabric to be. just remember to dye everything in one batch.

Stir constantly for the first fifteen minutes, use gloves and really work the dye into the fabric, unfold it and re-submerge. Then make sure to come back every 10 minutes, more frequently if you're really worried, to re-work the fabric.

Also use plenty of salt.

Blotchy-ness occurs when the fabric is allowed to sit, dye doesn't reach all areas evenly. But if the fabric is moved sufficiently then all the fabric should take up the maximum amount of dye for a smooth colour finish.

I have a blissey (hapinasu) gijinka but is something very basic. I have no pics but it goes as a lolita inspired coord (fluffy white skirt and pastel pink blouse with ruffles and lace), It also has a white apron with rufles on the shoulders and the front is open, making those white wing like things she has around the waist.

It looks okay. I don't like the jagged end of the cape a lot, but I don't know how you'd fix that. Maybe make the edges more even?

Also the arm cuffs (?) look weird. Make them go a little higher on your arm, and decorate the top of it with jewels/flowers.
The roses in the hands look kind of awkward too.

Been pondering how i could go about doing a Raticate Gijinka

I was thinking of pursuing the 'Dirty Rat' angle and modeling it upon a typical rogue/troublemaker stereotype, having some kind of hoodie up to incorporate the ears and tuft of brown fur on it's head, plus a scruffy tan wig and general baggy jeans/clothing to represent it's wide mass, plus me being quite a big guy

I'm liking the idea of having a pair of pearl white curved daggers to represent the rat's teeth (Hyper and Super Fang respectively) and then the tail could just be a tail, or some kind of belt around the waist

Kind of feel I'm taking it in to violent of a direction for Pokemon cosplay though. Any ideas?

Ah thank you, but I hang out on /vp/ so I have the artwork. I was hoping to see if any seagulls had cosplay photo's of the characters? Everything looks great in the artwork, but very rarely translates that way into a cosplay. For example flannery seems simple, but if you search cosplay images that hair is almost impossible. So I'm hoping to have a little look at what's been done and how plausible they are for a beginner level not beginner. Have some sylveon for contributing though

I personally wouldn't do the belt because I feel like that wouldn't translate well for what you're trying to accomplish. People would just think you're someone scruffy with ears. I wouldn't recognize you as a Raticate if you stood alone and not with a Pokemon group. Especially with daggers that wouldn't be up toward your face most of the time.

For the fangs, I'd actually look at doing some type of bandanna that covers the bottom of your face and maybe put some sort of design to look like the fangs on it. Then it'd be in the right location, as well as maintain the rogue look.

Classic NPC/PC costumes are really easy/somewhat cheap to put together, especially if it's a first time costume.

I'm on the left, my gloves and belt were about $6 apiece and were trashed by the end of the con, so I'm replacing them with more expensive/better material ones.

Thinking of removing the buckle from a belt and using industrial strength velcro on the inner portion to give it that seamless look the belts in the games have. I've also bought a few prop pokeballs.

Any tips on making my cap less...flat? I was thinking of padding it with cotton and having someone sew a fabric layer under that to get that puffy look the rocket grunts' hats have

Would someone be kind enough to give me advice on this Noibat gijinka? So far, the idea is fur vest, shorts, tights and shirt in hopefully matching purples, hair clip in the shape of Noibat's facial marking (or nose?), and wrist wings. I'm not sure if I want the ears to look like ears or be a headeating bow. Also considering a hat resembling Noibat's head. This is just the starting point though. I don't really want it to look like I just pulled stuff from my closet. Far as props go, I was thinking about maybe having a toy megaphone or something. If I do have the megaphone, would it be a good idea to go for a sportier look somewhat like a cheerleader?
