As >>7266850 said, organize your figures (I am very jealous especially of the Sailor Moon figure! ;_;), maybe get a shelf so you can hang them on the wall. Organized + makes a great decoration.

Hang up more pictues / posters or maybe even dresses on the wall. Match them to a theme /aesthetic (the pirate flag does not realy match your other picture).

Get more colour in your room (decoration, flowers, pictures, whatever), the wall and the floor look so plain, especially since they are so similar in colour.

aliexpress you'll find a lot of rilakkuma stuff there

also a suggestion : get some shit away from your floor. You seem to have everything piled low to the ground. Put the laundry baskets away, hang your clothes, get the plushies off the couch, move that photo off of the blinds (why is that even there?) and move that giant poster away from your TV. It's right next to an already black item which makes the room look clunky and weird.

Invest in some shelving. You can put your plushies and various things on shelves. If you want to display some of your cuter clothes, see if you can find a discount dress form somewhere, and buy some slipcovers for your couch. It's REALLY outdated and makes the room look old.

I've recently considered moving into the upstairs part of my house, or at least making a rec room/display room for my various collections and sewing stuff. It consists of a loft with a sunbed, table, dresser, queen bed and recliner (pictured) and an attic (you can see the door in the pic, it's full of shit). As you can see the place is a complete wreck, and this space isn't used for much other than storage, but I want to actually do something with it. My questions are, how should I decorate? I like a lot of the furniture but I want to turn the place into something eye-popping and not a granny-attic (once I move the shit out of here, of course). Do any of you live in a room where the bathroom is downstairs, and do you think living here full-time would be a bad idea due to that inconvenience? Do you have knicknacks and things that you adore, but simply make your room look cluttered/look out of place? How can I incorporate a nice color theme that will not clash with the woodwork? Sorry if this is a hefty load of questions!

>> No.7267383

>>7267373
You're a really lucky person to just have all of that space.
I think having a bathroom on another floor is common in every country, so unless you have insanely bad knees or bladder I can't see it being a problem.

I can imagine something very fairytale/mori inspired with all of that wood furniture, with roses wrapped around everything.

oh my those walls and floors are gorgeous.

I would clean up and go with something more simple. white is going to look the best with that type of wood. You could go really nature inspired and bring in lots of real (or fake) flowers, glass vases, maybe some other natural greenery.

I don't know if adding a whole lot of color would go very well with how much wood you have going on, but you can have a really nice refreshing place if you stick with a natural and bright color pallet

Holy shit, you have such a great space to work with anon! I love how the wood matches the windows too! I personally wouldn't mind having a bathroom downstairs, especially with that adorable vanity to keep all of my makeup and accessories on. That area under the skylight would be perfect for sewing, and you have some extra space to keep fabrics and everything organized. As for a color theme, it kind of depends on your personality. I think the room would be adorable decorated in pastels, but a dark velvety blue would also be really pretty. I like my stuff to look somewhat... retro though (the wood paneling helps with that aspect).

Good luck to you anon! Hope you post some progress pics!

Sorry my pictures are pretty bad. But I think this is the first time I'm comfortable enough to post our place, even though it still needs work. Right now we're in a studio place, downgraded from a one bedroom. There's still some mess(like the pile of stuff on the kitchen counter, the pile of empty containers by the door, the pink bag of a current cosplay project, and the two baskets of stuff on the couch)

Otherwise I'm in the process of condensing down more stuff. The place is actually pretty clean, the problem is we have a lot of stuff, so it looks messy just because of everything. I used to have way more stuff. I've shared the stories of me growing up in a hoarders house and being a hoarder like my family. This is the state of me pretty much fighting my habits. I've got totes of stuff to be sold and sent to goodwill, and bags full of fabric and a basket of sewing supplies I'm taking to a friends new years even for the group to pick through.

The place is comfortable and pretty clean, even if it doesn't look it because of just how crowded the space is, but I'm not completely happy with it right now. Hopefully in one of the next room threads, I can post the "final" room.

One review has a really cute idea of putting cute scrap booking paper on the back wall side before assembling so you have a cute pattern in the five boxes. The storage cubes that go in look easy enough to make if you want to try your own fabric.

That's actually a pretty good idea and would be a neat way to coordinate a paper to go with it. It's a little like what I did on my sewing desk shelves. I took the shelves out, glued some wrapping paper on the back, then put the shelves back in. I'm thinking of redoing it though since I didn't glue it down right the first time and there's obvious bubbles in the paper. You can see it in the picture. It was a floral print wrapping paper I picked up from Daiso Japan. I'm probably going to stop by their again and pick up some new paper to redo it.

All those stuffed animals have got to go. If they have sentimental value, at least get them out of sight in a trunk or closet somewhere. There is a quality about those plushies that is very juvenile.
Ditch the flower pillows.

Have you considered a desk + comfy desk chair?
If you don't want that, rearrange the furniture you do have there.

Adding onto this anon's suggestion. Try only keeping one or two out, and tuck the others away into a trunk/storage. For example, I collect Monster High dolls, but I keep most of mine store away in totes. I keep my favorites out on display.

It's kind of like displaying action figures/transformers. Generally the nicer looking displays are the ones that are more evenly spaced out. More often people will cram as many figures as possible onto a shelf and it turns into a giant clusterfuck. Compare the top shelf on the left picture with the one on the right, and you can get what I mean.

>>7272227
Since you said you can't cover the headboard up completely, I agree with this anon>>7272461 about covering the top with something lacey. You also get a mountain of cute pillows if you're the "mountain of cute pillows on bed" type.

I think all wallart looks best when framed. Look for some large cheap frames at yard sales and in thrift stores (i.e., look for large, ugly framed pictures). The wall scroll doesn't have to be framed since the scroll parts frame it.

That "inspiration board"/"picture board" whatever it is above your desk looks really junky. I'd streamline it if I didn't get rid of it completely.

Slipcover for the desk chair. Coordinate it with new curtains. Both of these should be whatever accent color you think looks cute with the yellow.

I'd paint the bookshelf a lighter color (maybe your coordinating color?)--it seems to suck up all the light in that area.

Also agree with this anon>>7272242 about covering your desk and bedside table with fabric, but I have another suggestion for the desk: cut the fabric to fit the top of the desk and then get some glass cut to put on top of it. Actually, I think wallpaper would work even better. An extra plus of having a glass-topped desk is that you can slide pictures underneath the glass (and so get rid of that terrible picture board hanging above your desk).

Oh, and I really like your Daliesque melting clock--I've seen plenty for sale online, but it's hard to determine quality by internet pictures. How does yours look in real life? Would you recommend it? If so, which company is it made by?

Check Craigslist if it's available in your area (or maybe charity shops, but those might be more expensive.)

Usually curio cabinets tend to hang around on the because people don't really use them anymore, so they're easy to barter down. Generally the people selling are adults trying to get rid of their dying or moving elderly parent's things, so taking it off their hands cheap is usually easy. Second hand shops, estate/garage sales, and possibly ebay depending on your area. The trouble is that anyone listing them as teacup shelves or specifically crockery shelves probably knows what the going rates are for them and will price accordingly - look for general terms like "shallow shelves" and "display shelves" and be prepared to sort through some crap. Obviously the really nice ones are usually snapped up by antiques dealers and are expensive anyway, but you should be able to find them.

That's actually a great base to work with - you have some space, and what looks like a decent amount of storage. As you've correctly identified, soft furnishings are the way to go when it comes to decorating dorm rooms. Because you can't change most of the room - i.e. wall colour, floor colour, furniture etc., you either have to cover it up or live with it. Some people even tack fabric over their curtains to hide them if they're ugly. If you're into a fairly girly look, you could hang a canopy from the ceiling, or drape fabric on the walls. 3M command hooks/sticky bits are your best friend for this as if you follow the instructions they do actually come off cleanly - blu-tack etc. tends to leave marks or not hold things ups. The other thing in dorm rooms is lighting - it's either BRIGHT FLUORO or really shit, if you have the latter think about alternative and decorative light sources like fairy lights, floor lamp etc. There's an fyeahdormrooms tumblr, if you want some more inspiration.

My studio is a bit dorm-roomish as it came fully furnished, I've just moved in and started decorating - not sure if the pic helps you at all, I'm also planning to make some card silhouettes to put up on the wall and get a rug.

Agreeing with thrifting for dolly kei room. Unless you can afford buying everything on etsy. I'm working on making a medieval witch themed apt myself.

Decide what overall colors, wood type, and metal types you want before you go out thrifting.

Basic dolly-kei themed interior items that are common thrift finds: a giant tapestries. lace curtains. Large rugs. fancy mirrors. cool looking candleholders. tiered curio shelves. fancy lamps. There's a lot of bric-a-brac out there, so don't go crazy and buy every shitty "so-vintage" 70s thing you see. Once you find a good store in a nice area, you should definitely haunt it and be friendly with the staff.

Don't be afraid to go to old/shitty areas/stores, sometimes that's where the best stuff is because no one else goes there. Too urban or too rural areas tend not to have good antique/vintage stuff though. Need I say garage/church sales are great for picking up cheap nice furniture?

my goal is to have my room clean enough to post in one of these threads *____*

I'm still unpacking from my move but I got this area set up. My goal is for my room to be like a gothy pirate cave. Not like a pirate theme but I like seeing my little treasures and things that make me happy.
One of these threads about a year ago gave me the idea to make a my little earing hang which is an old stocking wrapt around a paper mached box. It kinda looks like everything's floating :3

You sound like you have moch better luck thrifting.

I think it really depends on the area. I think depending on the state, county, etc.... you're going to find more interesting pieces. Also, it really depends on how much your thrift stores get picked over by resell hunters. I've ran into people at goodwill specifically hunting for vintage pieces to resell on ebay.

Though we do have a local antique market, so sometimes I see some pretty cool stuff. Though sometimes I do have luck finding cool stuff that the vintage hunters don't grab(or just don't care about)

We found a nice matted and framed version of Juarez Machado's Bistro. We paid $10 for it.

I wish I had common thrift finds like that... there are legit no thrift stores in my city that would sell that sort of stuff, it'd either get picked up by vintage/antique/curio stores and marked up to gazillions, or I'd have to go way out of town, and I don't exactly have a way of transporting stuff like that home. On the plus side, the clothing pickings aren't too bad because all the vintage stores are so upmarket that they only go for super designer vintage and a particular look.

Thrifting definitely makes the most sense for the look I'm going for. The problem is around my area there tend to be more "vintage" stores that basically take thrift store level stuff and mark them up because they're old.

Also, for people looking for furniture. Try looking for furniture liquidation places. Specifically ones that do hotel furniture. There's one near my place that sends out trucks to collect hotel and motel furniture. Often they end up with a bunch of duplicate pieces from places that shut down or are switching to newer pieces. I always see tons of dressers, lamps, chairs, mirros, etc... I ended up getting a pair of old little end tables. They have metal legs. I ended up paying like $10 a piece for them. You can actually find some pieces in really good shape, and some very nice when they're from nicer hotels. I've even seen things like industrial fridges and so on. From my experience, the one I go to has better prices then even the goodwills in the area.

This is the place I go to. The back area kind of reminds me a bit of a junk yard, mostly because there's just a lot of stuff.

Also, sometimes just asking hotels themselves if they're getting rid of pieces. I remember When the Sahara hotel in Vegas was closing in 2011, they were selling off furniture and so on. Also, I remember talking to a friend who worked at Disneyland, and she scored a pretty big dresser from one of Disney's hotels.

It was one of those weird errors where data got swapped. So somebody on another board ended up with a photo of the building instead of the kitty picture they posted.

But yeah. I think it really depends on where you're located. Because you're near an area where there's some nice hotels(like in the place I posted, it's in Anaheim and Disneyland isn't that far, so lots of hotels in that area.)

If all you have in the area are crappy little motels, you're just going to end up with junk.

Also, I don't usually admit it, but I've dumpster dived once(/DIY/ talks about it quiet a bit actually) We were looking for cardboard boxes since we were moving to a new place, and my husband looked inside a Target dumpster(one of those basic huge metal ones) and we saw a bunch of furniture in decent shape. Lots of desks and so on(they probably were damaged and we just couldn't tell) but we ended up grabbing an end table out of the dumpster and took it home. There's nothing wrong with it(it was wobbly but just needed tightened)

Usually you get in trouble for dumpster diving, but nobody said anything to us and this was in broad daylight.

Well we really only went in looking for boxes, and the dumpster was pretty much out in the open(unlike some places that keep them locked behind a gate.) It was easily accessible from the front parking lot. So it's not like we had to try very hard to get to it. Also since we were in a car instead of a truck, we really didn't look like those scrap collectors you usually see around. I think the worse we would have gotten was being yelled at by security.

The picture is the Target in question, and I circled where the dumpster was.

So yeah, it's probably the only time I've ever actually been dumpster diving.

I live the midwest.

Lace curtains are easily found almost anywhere. You just got to look at the home decor section. Tapestry blankets were popular in the 80s so they're commoner to find. If you can't find a candleholder in a thrift store you can pick one up at navy pier or marshalls.

I'm not even kidding when I say these are easy finds, because they're not always vintage. Sometimes they're just modern home decor people donate. You have to check back multiple times though, like once a week, that's the key. Don't be scared off my pickers. If they pick there it's probably a good store, and they could easily miss something or not come in one week.

Estate sales are great too. That's where I standing mirror.

I'm in a room that's smaller than the UK legal minimum for prison cells. 6 feet by 8 feet. The bed's a single bed which fits an extra-narrow mattress and it still takes up half the space. I've got one of those bunk bed arrangements with a desk and wardrobe underneath instead of a second bed. It's impossible for anyone to open the door properly while someone's sat at the desk. But at least I've got my own space, even if the wardrobe is fucking child size and won't fit most of my stuff. It's taught me to be organized, at least, and I'm actually looking forward to going to university and getting a bigger room.

Then, figure out what furniture you need or if you need to change the ones you currently have. Place furniture and other large items around until they make a decent looking but bare room.

Then figure out where smaller things goes like decorations, frames, whatever else to bring the bare rooms some life.

That dark wood is really nice, and I see what you mean about the walls, they are a bit insipid with the rich colours in your room. I would want to add more accents of purple in there so it's not just on your bed, but I think a dark purple would close your room in too much...so feature wall possibly?

Yeah I was thinking of doing that, maybe just paint one wall dark purple (the wall with the TV maybe) and the other ones a paler, brighter one.

Sorta like the two colors on pic related haha.

My cat's been a brat lately and climbing on the kitchen table. I think it's because her cat tower had to be moved outside. When she's outside(She sticks strictly to our backyard) She'll sleep in the top part of it in the sun.

I'm really happy since last night I went to goodwill and found a heavy stock print of Tournee du chat noir. I've been wanting to get a print of it for awhile, and I just happen to find it randomly there. I paid $4 for it and I plan to hang it above my sewing desk. I'm not exactly sure what it's on. I wanna say something particle board? But it's thick enough that it already has a spot on the back to hang it up.

Men can have cute and elegant rooms, too. Which rooms are you drawn to? Maybe we can help you "masculinize" them. Color choice and patterns play a large role in how rooms come off.

i wish i had more usable wall space in my room. the lower half of my walls are all covered with this decorative stones/bricks that jut out of the wall like 3 inches so it makes putting dressers or anything against the wall really awkward

My room isn't very lolita or cosplay related, but it's full of cute junk I buy from Asian shops so it's relevant enough I guess.

Does anyone have any rug recommendations? My carpet is so ugly and boring (and stained by makeup, yuck), but I can never find a cute, good sized rug that matches my room.

Your major color is pink so I'd go with a strawberry rug.

If you want more mint (or whatever color that is) accents, you could go for a regular, shaggy mint rug but you'd need more mint besides the curtains.

I have no room to put anything. My closet is full of military clothing and business wear and there is no room for a clothing rack. I have blackout curtains and don't have to worry about fading. It's really a matter of using the space I've got. I can't legally remove any furniture from that dorm to make room for a rack either. I am also unable to legally move to a different space that will hold my clothes for another nine months.
