How does /cgl/ view replica dresses? I'm not knowledgeable about lolita, but I offered to fund my little sister's first dress. I don't mind spending the money for name brand, but she's fallen in love with a "replica" dress, and I wanted to see how the community tends to feel about seeing replicas at conventions.

This would go better in the lolita general but if that's what she wants, that's what she wants. I don't judge people for wearing replicas, just if they go on and on about how the quality is the same or better than the original. A lot of people get steamed because it's art theft in some cases, and just unethical in the rest, but I really don't care about that. I steal whatever I can get away with anyways.

Replicas should all be burnt. That is the typical seagull stance, as well as simply the correct stance. I tried to link a really good article explaining why, but no matter what I do, 4chan seems to think it's spam, so just good fyeahlolita replicas.

As for wearing it to cons, I would strongly, strongly, STRONGLY advise against that.

>> No.7269210

>>7269151
if the item is still available, price it at retail exactly from the shop. This is going to save your buyers SS and some shipping fees, so it will turn out cheaper ordering from you. This is obvously if the item is brand new. If it's used, take off about 5% I'd say.

If it's an item that is in high demand (JellyFish dress for example) and is sold out everywhere and got a lot of hype, you can auction it for the highest paying seller.

If it's an item that is out of stock but not super desirable or from an unknown shop, stick to my first paragraph for pricing.

Make sure you take nice pictures. I only have success with no name taobao sales if I can show how it looks with a brand piece (like if it's a blouse or something) on a dummy with nice lighting.

Hope that helps.

a lot of people who buy replicas end up regretting it after seeing the authentic one in real life. they end up selling the replica and saving+waiting for the real one to turn up. or they end up buying some other dress that isn't a replica with the money from selling their old replica. i've never told someone off IRL for wearing a replica, i don't tell anybody else how i feel. but imo replica wearers give the impression of a person who doesn't care about the effort the original maker invested in creating a dress that is loved by many. this is particularly sensitive in lolita, since the following is small in comparison to mainstream labels, i feel it's extra important to not betray the original makers. overall, it's a sensitive topic.

since it is her first dress, it may be wiser to spend less than $200 on it (even if it's not her "dream dress") - i used to think my dream dress was something, but after a few months of buying various types of dresses i struck that dress off the list knowing it doesn't suit my body type anyway.

First off, it's not really comparable to torrenting when you scratch the surface. Not that I condone illegal downloading, but the people distributing are usually not making money off of it. It would be more accurate to compare it to buying illegal bootleg DVDs.

>Lots of people have no problem with jaywalking, or drinking when theyre not of age
That comparison is so beyond retarded it doesn't even deserve a proper rebuttal, but I'll give it to you anyway. First of all, jaywalking is generally a victimless crime. Underage drinking isn't and is something that should be dealt with, but it's still not comparable to what we're discussing. You're kind of grasping at straws here. Also, what the hell kind of defense is that? If someone rapes or kills someone, is "well some people jaywalk" a valid defense? Absolutely not.

>>7270585
I feel like the following points are common sense and shouldn't need to be pointed out, but whatever, I'll bite.

What if the brand is considering rereleasing that print or ends up doing so? There are tons of lolitas who won't buy rereleases of previously sold out prints because there is already a replica, even if they can fit into them and afford them.

Also, even when replicas were only of sold out dresses, brands were still speaking out against them. If you were an artist and someone was stealing your work without giving you any credit or fraction of the profit, would you be okay with it just because you yourself weren't selling it yourself? Even if the answer is yes for you, the vast majority of artists would say otherwise. Also, imagine that the answer is no and you make that clear to the companies selling your stolen art and the community buying them, but no fucks are given on their part. It shows a disgusting lack of respect for the brands.

That's the last I'm going to say about the issue here. If you want to continue the debate then make a new thread.

>> No.7270687

>>7270672
It is comparable to torrenting.

Fair enough about the other two points, I was mostly trying to illustrate that people do things that are considered wrong all the time.

Also, comparing rape and murder to buying a sold out replica dress is pretty fucking retarded in and of itself, don't you think? :)

It's only comparable to torrenting in the sense that it's art theft. Like I said, a better comparison is buying illegal bootlegs. Those who torrent are getting it for free, whereas with a bootleg you're paying for it, just like with a replica.

>Also, comparing rape and murder to buying a sold out replica dress is pretty fucking retarded in and of itself, don't you think? :)

Here, ill help you.

1. Google images search: fantastic dolly
2. Look at how the first result is the stock photo of the REPLICA
3. As more replicas are purchased, the replica companies become more 'successful'
4.DDC comes out, sells out immediately
5. AP decides they will do a pre-order, where pretty much ANYONE can get it
6. Replica whores wait for the replica even though they were perfectly capable of getting the original.

The success of a replicated sold out item propmpted the success of the entire company. I'm aware that the two examples are from different companies, but they are both very successful. Jia makes more replicas, if anything. She just never types out the name of the dress.

Do what you want, I'm not telling you otherwise, just please stop living in your world of denial. For example, I used to illegally download things all the time when I was a teenager, but never did I not acknowledge it was wrong. I never tried to make up excuses and ignore all the evidence and reasoning as to why it was unethical. Like I said, I don't care if you buy replicas, you can have an entire wardrobe full of them for all I care, I just can't see how you can't just get it through your head why it's unethical.
