I want to punch Michelle Phan in the face for bringing upon this plague of bad make up on to the world.

I hate it when girls use thick black eyeliner for male characters. It's one of my biggest pet peeves in cosplay.

Also, the eyelashes. I hate when people wear mascara for male characters. If anything, you should mascara and then immediately put light powder on them to lighten them.

That's the biggest problem with girls cosplaying him. I get that Link always looks like he has an outline around his eyes, but those are his EYELASHES because of the ART STYLE. lol Link don't run around with eyeliner on.

That problem is not Link specific either. So many girls only know one way to do makeup, and so they do the same things they normally do, even when cosplaying as male characters. It is one of my biggest peeves, next to wearing beat up runners and no ironing things. Make up for males is different than make up for females!

The problem is bitches don't know to change it up with colors and as 2nd anon said, many girls use the same techniques for applying makeup for either gender and it's not always appropriate.

Punk rocker dude with loads of makeup? Fabulously gay make character with makeup? Drag queen? Ok, load on that thick eyeliner and crazy colors.

But for most male characters, your makeup should not look like you're wearing makeup. You just really want nice skin, possibly to add a dab of lip primer to neutralize super red lips, and to use browns instead of blacks for eye liner and mascara (if you must). Brown will allow you to define your eyes without being as dramatic or feminine which is what black typically does. Also, a lot of girls feel compelled to do thick or smokey eye makeup for every character, males and even female characters where said makeup technique is not appropriate. IMO inappropriate character makeup ruins a good cosplay because it becomes all that you see.

Yeah I think a TINY bit of brown eyeliner on your waterline is okay, especially when you've caked on lots of foundation, because sometimes foundation without anything on your eyes makes you look like a washed-out ghost. So long as it's thin enough to barely notice it, it can make a difference (and not in a bad way).

It's a good idea for male cosplayers to do that too. One of my guy friends wore some light brown eyeliner on his waterline and it made his eyes pop and no one guessed he had makeup on.

I think it also depends on the person too. I'm Korean and my lashes are average, not super lusciously full nor really sparse. People have asked why I had no eyelashes before because they aren't very visible as they stick straight out until I curl them. A lot of my friends have the same thing going on too.
