That depends OP.
You can do one inspired by video games like: Stalker, Metro, Borderlands (sort of), Fallout and many more.
Or you can do one inspired by movies, Mad Max, Book of Eli, zombie flicks, there's a ton.

Or you could do one inspired by different cultures, like, we never see post-apocalyptic settings in like, India or Africa, you can do something inspired by that?

Thats true, like I said there are HEAPS of different ones you can do.
My first thoughts were: combat boots, tattered jeans, flanalette shirt, combat vest, gas mask + russian winter hat.
From there I could add accesories such as a backpack, water canteens etc.
Is there anywhere online where items similar to these can be purchased?

OP here, I would much prefer to have a gas mask. I'm unsure where to get ones though, I was told that some of the old ones can have asbestos in the filters? Had a brief look around ebay, but I dont really trust the quality.

Get a GP5 or other Russian milsurp mask, they tend to look the "best" for this type of outfit. Old Russian can and often do have asbestos so watch out.

You're not going to find anything made of metal for a few reasons. One, that's incredibly hard to make. Two, it'll be insanely expensive. Three, actual riot vests aren't even made of metal.

Your best bet is to either commission someone to make it or make it yourself.

As That Guy said, even if you could find a metal one, itd be incredibly costly, not to mention itd be heavy as all hell and probably quite uncomfortable. Your best bet is to make it yourself, it is extremely easy, believe me. For my vet ranger cosplay, i used EVA foam floor mats and simply traced the pattern of the riot gear onto the foam, cut it out, pieced it together, and put some velcro on the tops of the shoulders to attach it into my duster, Pic related. If you do make it yourself, remember that a soldering iron is a godsend for detailing and weathering foam, itll save you untold hours of work if you were to try and do the battle damage any other way. Also theres a really good tutorial on the 405th somewhere about doing this ranger chestpiece, it was a huge help when i made mine. Ill see if i can dig it up for you.
