Probably somewhat true. As someone who's definitely of slightly-below-average-looks, lolita was one of the first things that made me actually feel "pretty". It actually really helped my self-confidence though, to the point where I started putting effort into my "regular" clothing as well, and actually have a definable style. I still have a long way to go, but as a person who used to live in jeans and oversized t-shirts, I'm definitely improving.

Honestly, I think a large percentage of lolitas come from a similar background. Not all, of course, people get into it for different reasons. But I've heard a lot of people talk about how wearing lolita was their first real opportunity to get into wearing and being creative (but tasteful) with clothing.

As an outside looking in, there is actually some really good looking stuff. "Fedora" fashion is pretty much entirely 1-2 sizes too large clothes coupled with a fedora.

While there is bad lolita, the clothes and style itself isn't actually that bad depending how they wear it.

The more neutral colored stuff with fancy prints and matching outfit/socks/etc looks pretty nice and attractive.

Fedoras also are just used horribly to imply "intellectual" by idiots, but almost all male fashion is terrible and ill-fitting in america.

>> No.7228716

I couldn't agree more. Lolita seems to attract the strangest people, and a lot of the oddballs seem to treat the fashion like its an ideal lifestyle and shame on anyone else that doesn't adhere to these unofficial frilly rules. These are the one's that make lists of "what a Lolita should and shouldn't be." There's always like a handful in each comm.

tfw people keep calling trilbys, fedoras.

Anyway Lolita is kind of like that, There are the well dressed attractive girls (the Fedoras in this situation). Then there are the Ita's/ 'special snowflakes'/and poorly dressed girls (the Trilby's). Then just like anything everyone assumes all the 'fedoras' of the lolita world, are exactly like the 'trilbys' then everyone is painted with the same brush.

I think the concept is KINDA there, but there's some differences.

Lolita is at least an attempt at fashion, at wearing a full outfit that hits a particular style.

the hats are more...there's this paranoid concern about "manly" amongst a lot of the nerd community, so they'll pick "hats are manly! beards are manly! bacon is manly!" And slap those on top of the usual "this outfit exists out of legal requirement to wear lothing" outfit.

This is probably the "male" equivalent of Lolita. If you had 100 guys try to pull off a similar look you would get a lot of horrifying moments, and in general he wouldn't fit in anywhere except the most fancy or well-dressed areas but overall the look is nice and attractive.

imo clothes are like 40% about a proper fit and 40% the wearers body shape.

Neither actually (and 49-38-50 is definitely fat, no question about it.). It comes from being posted on this board actually several times out of revenge by another girl that has since left our community. I could wear the perfect coord for my body type, but if a regular sized girl wore the exact same coord, guess who would look the best of the two? The smaller girl.

I'm not saying I look awful all the time, I think I look great! But since the style was invented to flatter smaller frames, the same outfit would just inherently look better on smaller figures.

It has nothing to do with ugly features, it's that a lot of clothing is designed to flatter skinnier features. And considering most lolita is designed for skinnier people it's going to look better on people who it's made for. It's not about feeling inferior because they're ashamed of their body, it's more about knowing what looks good on yourself and what doesn't.

Eh, this is true for most people. I'm pretty small, but guess what? I'm not really very cute. If I'm next to a cute girls wearing the same outfit, she's gonna look better. We're ALL in that position - there's always going to be someone cuter, smaller, or better suited to lolita than you are, no matter who you are (with perhaps a few exceptions). Same with regular clothing, or even life - someone's always going to be more confident, prettier, smarter, richer, etc than you. We're all in the same boat. Try to just do the best you can, and, as much as you can, let go of the comparisons. They'll do you no good in this life.

The fucking truth is.

How fat or skinny you are is hugely important for how an outfit looks on you. Lolita probably is more forgiving, but once you lose the general shape of a girl it's just very hard to look good in clothes.

For lolita, it works up till the point your stomach becomes outwardly round enough that it destroys the shape of the skirt and poof, making it look silly as heck.

Basically, "chubby" girls can wear lolita okay, but once you get past a certain belly size it just comes crashing down and you can't look good in it no matter what.

Lose weight if you want to look good.

Lolita is pretty damn forgiving, probably the most of any type of fashion as far as body shape goes.

Like, your ass doesn't matter, your hip-waist curve most of the time doesn't matter, and even your breasts are downplayed in terms of mattering.

The thing is, the shape of lolita does actually look fine on most bodies if worn properly, probably more so than any skirt and dress.

There is just a limit. To be real, past a certain point the body shape of obese people just becomes too much. Maybe if it was done amazingly well and custom made it could look okay or good. There is just something inherently shallow and based on shape with fashion and obese girls can't pull it off.

That being said, do what you want, just don't expect it to look amazing or as good VISUALLY on your body type. Also maybe work towards eating healthier and getting more exercise if your visual ascetics are important to you.

A proper Fedora's brim should be fitted to your shoulder width. Meaning a brim width too wide, or too short for the width of your shoulders makes it look awful. Just like a suit is tailored to your body, a proper Fedora should be too.

I have a friend that dresses in 40's suits often for special events, and when he ordered his ridiculously expensive Fedora to wear with it he had to also send his shoulder width (measuring from shoulder to shoulder across his back, and chest) to the hat maker so the brim wouldn't be too wide or too short.

Do you just not know anything about modern feminists? A lot of them tend to shun anything feminine especially things like clothing, because they wrongly believe that clothing was a way of oppression since it was so intricate and almost painful at times throughout history, even though that's not the case.

This is especially true with dresses of any kind.

Honestly I think a lot of it is psychological and comes down to the parenting.

For as far as I can remember, even to the age of 4, I remember my Dad taking me out and choosing victorian styled ruffled dresses, tartan pinafores, cardigans tying my hair in pigtails, bows, headbands and just about everything cute, he would shower me with praise and tell me it looked best on me. Eventually I felt awkward and boyish if I so much as tied my hair back, I refused to wear jeans or anything that wasn't feminine enough, always felt like I had to overcompensate for my lack of grace, clumsy nature and androgynous face by covering myself in dresses and bows.

Years later when my parents divorced and my dad made new children to live with, I felt that continuing to wear dresses and bows would help me relive the years when he would tell me he loved me and call me his princess. He has a new 6 year old princess now... And I don't think I'll ever be noticed by him or have times like that again, so I can only wear the dresses by myself to remind me of the unbroken family I used to have. Call it daddy issues if you want, but to me it's just reminding myself of a simpler time, a time when wearing that stuff made me feel happy and cared for

I think a lot of it is a lot of different things, but almost everything is psychological in some way.

Many people do things for different reasons.I'm a gothic loli(I also wear EGA) and I personally wear it because it tends to make people back off. Plus it's a mature look and much of it is inspired by mourning clothing, which I really like. I tend to wear it as a kind of shell and to reflect my hidden pain from an invisible disability.
