some friends and i are planning on going to A-Kon this year, and I want to go in costume, as an Imperial Fist Space Marine. can anyone hook me up with some good resources for making Space Marine armor? The stuff i found through a google search was like, crazy complex, involving vac forming molds and stuff.

I also want to make a fuck off huge Thunder Hammer. I've hear about making big wweapons like buster swords by carving foam and then coating it with bondo. do y'all think that would work for something with a lot of volume like a hammer head?

Well shit, 1 and 3 are broken.

At least that Black Templar guy still has his site in working order.

You'll wanna check out Henrik pileruds stuff here
>http://obscuruscrusade.com/forum/index.php?topic=1544.0

And hit the download link that's there, 1GB folder of pretty much everything you'd need, including a load of helpful progress pictures.

Was really useful when I was building my pic related suit.

If you're still here OP, also try Obscurus Crusade, they are very helpful and if you get stuck at any point they can walk you through it:

Just noticed that this post >>7222664 goes directly to the site I also linked. Nevermind me, should've read the thread more carefully.

This seems like an appropriate place to ask.

I'm thinking about trying to make some UNSC Marine armor, but going to do it a little bit differently. Instead of the usual foam and fiberglass method, I'm thinking about using thermoplastic kydex. Its cheaper and stronger, and generally easier to work with. But I have no idea what the fuck I'm doing outside of how to work with the material.

Uhh, what is it like to work with? Is it similar to worbla in that you heat it up with a heat gun or something to make it more malleable?

>> No.7224399

>>7224394
You heat it in an oven or with a heat gun, it becomes soft and floppy. Then you shape it and it cools and hardens. If you fuck up, you can reheat it and try again.

I'm sorry to tell you this, bud, but this is a really, really difficult choice for a first costume. I'm not saying it will be impossible to do this and do it well, I'm just saying that you've picked a hell of a costume to learn on. Are there any other characters (think outside 40k) that have some light armor you'd like to work with first? Like Commander Shepard or something along those lines? Additionally, I hope that you're XBAWKS HUEG if you want to pull off spas marun.

Good luck in your endeavors though, man! I'm not a 40k fan myself but I appreciate the designs and lore.

>> No.7224408

DAMN!

Looking into worbla, that stuff is expensive! square foot of it is around $14. Definitely going to go with kydex at $5-7 per sq/ft

Pretty similar then. Uhh, I haven't worked with it much but for making armour you need to sandwich craftfoam between 2 pieces so it holds its shape.

There are probably UNSC Marine pepakura templates out there so you could cut those templates out onto the craft foam, sandwich between your thermoplastic and then heat into shape. Or instead of templates just do it by eye with plenty of reference pictures if you are feeling up to it.

Or maybe I'm just being a retard as I don't have much experience working with this stuff, I'm more of a foam guy myself.

OP, I have some bad news for you: if you want a Space Marine costume that is going to make people sit up and take notice for the right reasons, there is no shortcut - only hard work and courage.

I know it's gonna be a job and a half, that's why i'm giving myself 6 months. Plenty of time to make mistakes. I'm 6'1" so I should be ok size wise. a little extra height in the boots and the width from the pauldrons, i should end up fairly imposing.
>>7224713
I just don't want to buy a a vacuum former.

I was looking into vacu-formed armour a couple years ago. You can make one out of some plywood and a shop-vac. Just google "homemade vacuform".

Just a little taller than me. Though wearing my suit adds an extra 12" to my height because of the stilts I made for my boots. Though I think I'm gonna have to start working out or something as the suit is rather heavy and is very tiring to wear for long periods of time, so I need to improve my strength and endurance I guess. Maybe something for you to think about when making yours. If you build yours out of EVA foam that is anyway.
