To elaborate: The reason hoop skirts work is consistent tension around the loop forcing the hoop to keep in a circle instead of sproinging out flat again. If you cut a hole in the boning the tension is killed and the whole thing collapses.

I guess you could try working around it by using fishing wire to replace the tension or by making extra huge hoops and lifting the front up (pic related), but the way these things are drawn in most art is impossible to do the way cosplayers are trying to do it.

even a bustle has parts that cover up the front of the legs, either wiring to keep the shape or a skirt portion to keep the loose end balanced on your body. the ones that have nothing in front of the legs at all are all victorian style rear-only bustles that aren't big enough or round enough down the hips to actually accomplish what we're talking about.

and that pic is from a patent application for a modified hoopskirt, not a practical bustle diagram. if you have photos of an actual bustle or hoopskirt that opens in the front like that I'd love to see them.

That design does appear stupid as fuck as it appears to be trying to imitate a crinolette and is a really poor imitation of they're actually supposed to be. I'd make it still wrap around the front and have it sit on the waist underneath Terezi's corset. The waist part would be made of linen to be smooth under the corset and the brown lines of the crinolette would also be wire (or something similar) covered in linen to reduce weight. That way the lace could also be sewn onto it.

I actually would really like to see this. For all the shitting these threads do on people, they still offer legit criticisms that could be used to improve cosplays.

I've seen pictures of my own cosplays show up in these threads a couple times, and it's been nothing if not helpful.

I really think homestuck cosplays should be held to the highest standard, as any other fandom, but tumblr is far too forgiving on things like costume construction. As long as you have a pretty face and photoshop you get 10,000 notes.

I get so frustrated to see so many Homestucks in my community continuing to make horrible newfag mistakes on their cosplays and (since I'm an older member in the community in my area) I've tried before to offer helpful little tips on making their costumes look better and not like a pile of shit, but they refuse to listen to any help unless you're "tumblr famous."
This "tumblr famous" shit is going to these kids heads and it's really sad. They won't listen to anything unless it's popular/from the mouth of a popular cosplayer.
I would leave them to their own failures but to be honest, I don't want to be seen standing next to a train wreck.

Yes. yes yes yes yes. Even if some people shun it, they won't be able to disagree with the degree of help it'll provide. I also think a lot of people who do end up cosplaying homestuck cosplay it exclusively, and have no real prior experience with costuming.

I'm going to out myself here, I was the Porrim in that dancestor shoot that was posted recently. It was my first ever cosplay, and I definitely would've killed to have like. A "newbie" homestuck cosplay guide. Even just going through these threads have given me so many things to fix and improve on.

I think this is a much better environment for cosplay as opposed to tumblr. Everyone seems afraid to criticize cosplays or make suggestions, even if half of the "cosplays" are just kids with badly styled hair and sharpied shirts. It sort of. brings down the quality of homestuck cosplay in general I think.

No matter how snarky some of the comments are here, a good deal of them are generally constructive.

A lot of those are pretty basic, but helpful never the less. I think there's enough tutorials and guides out there for trollmake/horns. I would really like to see something concentrating on construction of both costumes and props. Like the difference between materials, what kinds of materials would be best suited for different costumes, and handy guides for working with these materials. This is applicable to any cosplay, but I suppose we could hit on the specific costumes ie ancestors vs godtiers vs dreamers etc.

I mean, I think that alone would bump up the quality of many of the cosplays I've seen by a lot. Just correct fabrics and correct sewing technique.

I guess this all seems a bit broad, but that's just my idea. Seems to be something people need the most help with. I'd like to see something where quality isn't sacrificed for price. Any other suggestions?

I just want to add that I am someone who has been posted here a few times and has had positive and negative things said about me - there was nothing constructive what so ever. It was all appearance based which you either like or you don't.

I started coming here because I did see constructive things going on and there have been good tips given (even if not about my cosplay.) But they do often melt into asspats, rudeness, and drama, and it would be nice to not wade through that shit to get to something constructive.

So I guess what I'm trying to say is I like the idea of having a newbie guide. The threads look like they go to hell pretty often now a days but having guides that can be referred to in the middle of a shit storm can bring things back on topic

That's a really good idea. I think the thing that really killed me, and a lot of other Porrim cosplayers, is that I referenced MF's Porrim a lot when making my cosplay. I think a lot of people tend to seek out previous cosplays or well known cosplays of their characters, just to see how designs are translated in real life. (I think this is where the trend of long trains and long black wigs comes from.)

Having a nice, accurate costume to reference would be super duper helpful.

I think this is where you might run into a problem, due to the fact peoples head canons for how an outfit looks are all different. I'm not trying to bash or shit on your idea, I think a reference of what to do/not do is a really great idea that would be useful for all cosplayers, just maybe the subject matter shouldnt be something like homestuck.

Cut... them... and they won't look swept over because they'll be cut and not swept over.

You'll want to use a hair razor on them to make the ends look natural though, so you don't end up with something too blunt and awkward looking. Also they should still be side parted/sort of sideswept, so you should cut at an angle and not straight across.

How do you guys think a Dave cosplay would look with a very light red wig instead of a blonde one? I'm talking extremely light red, almost white. Would that look weird? The same goes for any of the white-haired kids and their respective colors. Would it be cool or just end up looking dumb?
