I'm thinking about cosplaying this guy soon, but am a bit overwhelmed by the daggers.

What would probably be the best way to create these? I've never made any daggers before, let alone curved blades. I'm thinking of doing a PVC handle, then using spray adhesive/the like to put the guard on. My brain just shits out thinking of ways to affix the blade. I can't imagine it would be sturdy just drilling a small hole into the guard and gluing it in there.

I'm thinking of using maybe wood for the base, then Bondo'ing over it since it seems a lot of people use Bondo for this (though I've never used it yet). Perhaps craft foam instead, and either Bondo it or do a nice thin sheet of styrene.

Any suggestions for creating the blade and/or affixing it?

Alright, so I've wanted to do a GLaDOS cosplay ever since Portal was first released, and I've been working out for the past year or so to get from the 175 lbs I was down to the 130 I am now. Since I finally feel fit enough to pull off such a tight bodysuit, I need to get started on the construction itself! I was wondering what the best type of material would be for this project-- I don't want to risk it being see-through since half the outfit is a silvery-white, but I want to keep the artificial look and stay away from cotton knits. Any suggestions and/or advice would be entirely welcome and greatly appreciated!

Okay, so, I'm making my first armor ever...and I chose from Monster Hunter. Looking back, not my wisest move, but I'm in too deep now to give up.

Anyone know any good methods for this? I'm using fosshape.

GLaDOS anon here-- thank you so much for the material recommendation! It's exactly what I was looking for.
In regards to the bodysuit, I'm aware that it's pretty overdone, but I'm not sure which other route to take. I've seen adaptions with Aperture lab coats, but that seems rather lazy and I'm looking to give myself at least a bit of a challenge. Any kind of formal dress seems out-of-place... but perhaps I could integrate Caroline's design with some "armor" pieces and wire from her robot form? Or should I go more for of a bondage-inspired deal, since that's what the character designers had in mind? I'm definitely willing to come up with an original outfit, but I'm not entirely sure how to go about it.

I'm not sure if different fasteners would really fix this problem, considering that it's caused by the excess/ease in the fabric to accommodate for the crotch area. If it wasn't there, your crotch would be VERY snug and awkwardly tight... It's also near impossible not to have at least some on a pair of pants that sits at the hips (as most modern pants do) and not at the waist (as they used to be).

But if I had to pick, either a set of closely-placed snaps or a full set of buttons. What sort of outfit are you looking to fix them for?

The fabric on the right, I'm not sure, but it feels a lot like what I have on the left, so I'm guessing if it's not totally polyester, it's got a good bit of polyester in there. I'd have to buy a lot more of it.
So I should just scrap what I have on the left and work with the one on the right?

If you're a beginning stitcher, it'll be a little tough to get exactly what Cristina wears off of a commercial pattern. The Assassin's Creed series is good at being historically accurate with its clothing.... to a point, and then they just try and make it look pretty.

As strange as it looks, McCalls 6819 should work with some minor edits for the top-most gown (rounding out the collar; connecting the long skirt train in the back and lengthening it-- look at the illustration and not the weird sci-fi white coat version posted on the website). You'll need to leave the peplums off of the gown, obviously.

Probably your best bet for the chemise/underdress and under skirt is Simplicity 2573 as a base, using view A. The puffed-look of the sleeves can be done simply by tying ribbons around the arm and letting the loose fabric billow above where it's tied!

Try to avoid buttons and zippers for this costume-- use laces and nicely hidden hook and eye closures!

If I can answer any more questions, do let me know. Period clothing is hard to make off of commercial patterns and still have it look fairly close to the original garments... If you were an advanced stitcher, I would point you to a historical pattern book and tell you to learn how to pattern off of that, hahaha.

I've got a help-related question. I was planning on entering a local con's masquerade as a novice with this costume. The con is a few months away an the costume is already mostly done. It's made of good quality thick linen, lined and finished and the cat thing is made out of Minky. The petti is organza and it fits me well. I think it's a pretty solid costume over all.

I made this a while ago, and really enjoyed making it, but have no plans nor the funds to finish the costume it was for. That being said, I enjoyed making it enough to make more, but I can't justify buying more materials and spending the time to do so unless I'm making some sort of money from it.

Thank you all for your input on this! As for reference, this is the centerpiece to the chest portion of the Forsworn armor from Skyrim. When I initially made it, I made it to have the same basic shape as the reference and really didn't intend to make it look much more realistic, but as time went on I decided to make it look a little more like an actual bird skull. This is why it is missing a lot of the divots, etc that an actual bird skull has. At the end I tried to make it look like a piece of bone that was probably not cleaned correctly and that was not regularly cleaned, which is why the brown is splotchy.

I like making these, but I can't see selling them for more than one or two dollars a piece at this quality level. As you said, it could stand for some finishing. Perhaps as time goes on, I'll get better at this and will be able to make something others will enjoy.

As for buying real skulls, I would 100% advise against this as it is actually illegal to own any part of particular birds. I mean, no one's going to come banging your door down cause you picked up a raven feather that one time, but yeah.

Should I just sew them onto some tights, or go with leggings? The shoe covers are spandex, but I worry that trying to sew them onto tights won't work and just end up putting runs in the tights.

Feels aside. Check this video for building the veins.

Since the veins on Kariya's face are a little wider you might want to build them with nose putty instead. And instead of using the crazy bruise makeup you would go over your face and the veins with a foundation makeup in sickly pale shade and and seal it with a translucent powder. You can go in and contour the veins if you want. Meaning getting a bronzer or perhaps a greyish eyeshadow and lightly brush it in where the veins meet the skin to create more depth. Remember to do this to your hands as well.

For the wig go to eBay and look for "short white grey cosplay wig" and pick something that is already puffy. It's hard to get a flat wig to poof out. Get it on your head and trim it anywhere it seems long by keeping the scissor blades parallel to the fiber to avoid blocky cuts. Use any hairspray to get the spikes to go in the right direction but don't use too much. It can make wigs "piecey"

I have heart-shaped sunglasses (pick related) that would leave my eyes very visible. Should I risk the circle lenses? Should I buy darker red, circular-framed sunglasses instead? Thanks!

This is a really stupid question but I've never sewn a sailor fuku before and none of the tutorials I've found have been helpful for this particular part of it. I make mine as a loop and sew down the edges to the material of the shirt by hand. The loop should be under the start of your collar or else the handkerchief won't sit right.

I generally use the top right method for heavy fabrics and the bottom right method for lighter ones. Make some mock ups with muslin and find what you like best.

For her hat, you could search for military shakos and paint it/put on the embellishments. As for the yoke/collar, do you think it would look bad as a separate piece? Otherwise, I'd make the front the yoke and have the light blue back come up to meet it there. Then the back collar part can come out of that seam. Start by breaking the outfit out, for example Reimu has a skirt, a red over jacket, a black under shirt and kimono style arm warmers.

Start looking for commercial patterns you can modify for your purpose. You can look for Lolita skirt tutorials for the skirt, look for long jackets (the trinity matrix pattern is my favorite but I think it's out of print) or jackets with oversized collars.

If making these types of garments is new to you, make mock ups to ensure the fit is correct, I would especially urge you to mock up the jacket and the arm warmers.

As for fabrics, I would go with something with a nice weight or drape. You can look at matte satins, suiting's, cotton sateen, ect. I picture the designs of touhouvania being fairly fine, or rich with a lot of texture so you can look for fabrics that would portray that. I would also suggest using different types of fabrics for contrast. For example, if you use a matte suiting for the red try using a sateen or satin with a bit of shine to contrast.

I'm looking for some suggestions/ideas regarding the making of the skirt for a Lillymon cosplay. My friends and I have brainstormed it a bit and have come up with everything from making the dress/skirt out of fleece (and stuffing the "petals" to make them poofy) to making the skirt out of craft foam. I've also considered making it similar to a Madoka skirt (I've seen this done in the past), but I'm still not sure about that method because the petticoat underneath would show through.

Mostly I'm just looking for something that looks 3D, but I can also comfortably sit down in without destroying.

I have an old costume where I had to make something similar.

I used a medium weight fabric, and basically used wiring, and some heat and bond along the bottom to help allow me to shape the bottom to create a more petal like effect. I dyed the fabric using a gradient method.

For Lillymon, you could use a similar(though obviously more improved) method since I made this costume years ago with less sewing experience.

Picture related, obviously not a great costume or anything, but hopefully give you an idea of what I'm talking about.

I would use dark T-shirt transfers and not Heat-n-Bond for the decals. I don't think a fabric applique will be the look you want, plus the edges will start to come up if you don't stitch them down. As for the white part, I would put on the jumpsuit and then pin your pre-cut fabric to it before sewing it down (only where the seams are), otherwise it's going to bunch and look weird. Please hem or otherwise finish your edges before attaching the white fabric if you don't plan on actually paneling it in to the jumpsuit.

Unfortunately, though, since the jumpsuit just got here, I discovered it was too wide for me and legs were too long. I could have totally gone down a size. Well, lesson learned. Start cosplays well in advance, I guess I was kind of nuts for starting it so late. I have a phone strap. It's adorable, but after a year of use on my wallet-strap, some of the plastic is beginning to very slightly become lose at the edges. I imagine that rings get much less banged-up, so it's probably not an issue, but I guess it depends on how long you want it to last for.

I'm glad I am not the only one to think that. Personally I think playing is much different then just watching a walkthrough (which I don't get why someone would do that, watch a game online rather then play it). Better not try and tell everyone how you ~played~ the game.

The techinique that I have found works best for weird hats is to get needle point sheets and make the basic shape out of sewing those together. Then cover those with fabric. They stand up well enough by themselves so that you could cut the front out for that little skull she's got there. sailor uniforms are literally the best thing for beginner sewers. There are so many tutorials out there. A good strategy for beginners is to find a heavy T shirt and make the sailor collar and the tie by themselves and just pin them to the shirt. Pleated skirts are really just all depending on your ability to use a ruler so it's not even hard. You should be fine with 1.5-2" pleats for mako

Just add a cutting of the sponge inside the sharpie to more alcohol than usual. Start off with a small piece and test that on your wig. You can always go back and add more if it is not dark enough to your taste.

If you have an emegency and have to take some of the dye off the wig cause you went too dark put some of the unused clear alcohol in an old bin or container you don't mind messing up and dip the wig in it and slosh it about. Should remove the worst of the mistake.

That isn't Elizabethan. That is Victorian at its earliest. The reason you are finding no hits is that you're about 200 years off.

Sorry to spam, I keep finding goodies to share.

Now, like I said, the daintier Victorian standing collar would be best just heavily starched, as it is really just two or three layers of lace, but if you need to go heavier, the Elizabethan standing collar's boning can be built like a latticework as shown, or like the bones of a fan/peacock's tail.

You should be wearing shoes that go with uniforms then, which are usually loafers, you can buy them on amazon or ebay or elsewhere on the internet. For the socks, and also probably shoes and uniforms in general you should try cosmates, they have a lot of both real and costume uniforms and socks and shoes that would work great with kogal.

Basically a kogal was a term for a girl in school who likes the gal style but couldn't dress up in gal day to day, so they wore hiked up skirts, and bunched their socks down low to show more skin, many tanned if they could and tried to wear makeup(many ended up delinquents)
More recently, kogal has evolved into just a style of gyaru that incorporates school uniforms and the iconic bunched socks still with tan and makeup and dolled up hair, but worn outside of school and regardless of age.

Like I probably said, the important things are similar to that of any gyaru style, hair makeup, tan to some extent and proper clothing choices(in this case a school uniform with a short skirt) that's pretty much all you need to achieve the look.

Hope that helped somewhat!

Junkers cosplay posted a photo of how he transported his weapon from Socal to atlanta, i thought it was pretty clever, pic related. He took it on the plane but sometimes shipping to the hotel is cheaper than paying for an extra bag. Check with your post office for a quote, and check with your airline to see how expensive adding an extra bag is

if theyre small enough to fit in your luggage, wrap them in clothes. Thats always my method, and i havent had anything break.. yet.

if youre concerned about the pattern itself, you can always buy one from somewhere (vic secret, macys, etc), trace it carefully on to paper, and return it.

Ok so I'm altering slip on shoes that look like mary janes. My problem is that they are too loose around the top part and won't stay on my foot.... suggestions? I don't want to add a strap because then they won't look accurate. Id like to find some way to take in the top but have no idea how... the material is pretty stiff.
Any help appreciated!

How can I make a collar stand up? I tried medium-weight interfacing + starch, and it still flopped. I tried wire and that kept poking into my neck.

Should I try heavy-weight interfacing? Thing is, I don't want to use cardboard/foam because I can't really wash those...

There is this stuff that I can only really describe as "stiff felt" which is usually nest to the regular felt in the store. I have always used that for my crazy standing collars.
What I like to do for the folded collars is to use the stiff felt on only the attached side and just iron the fold really well so it stays up.
In the bottom picture, I had all but the front panel sandwiching stiff felt which made it lean out a little bit since that front panel wasn't as supported.

Like most contacts for astigmatism, they're going to be more expensive. I've never had issues, nor have I known anyone slicing their cornea open with regular circle lenses like the rumor, but I still wouldn't recommend wearing non-astigmatism lenses for more than a little while anyway.

We're doing these two costumes and are a bit unsure of the best way to do the harlequin pattern for the tights and gilet lining. Custom printed fabric would be easiest but I haven't seen any places that do a metallic print. Does anyone have other suggestions? I'm worried I won't be able to get clean enough lines with handpainting, especially on the tights.

How would I even begin to do that? Materials, methods, anything. Is working with fishnet so intricately like that an actual thing, if so what? I'm particularly lost on the part near the top/collarbone area of it.

And also, is there a name for the way the bottoms of his pants are split?

Handpainting might be the easiest way to get it done, but if you're willing to do something more tedious for the sake of appearance, taping off the pattern or making a stencil would help with the lines. Also, you could get the same look as the watercolor that way because you could do something like sponge the paint on.

Hand painting would probably be the easiest, although if you are really concerned about clean line, you could always make your own using a 4-way stretch and a modified tutorial of pic related. It would involve a bit of patience.

What do you use for the heating? I'd be wary of our stove since it's rented and any mishaps resulting in plastic on that would be a nightmare. I am investing soon in a small heat gun if that would do the trick?

Plastic sheeting for like shed roofing and things?

>> No.7233727

>>7233710
I don't know much about specific plastic materials, but anything that's relatively thin should probably be okay. I'd definitely use a heat gun since these pieces are big and you have more even heating and better control. A blowdryer would probably work in a pinch, too.

It looks like you'd need a short wig and clip on for this anyways, the sides need a bit of styling and wouldn't look accurate enough in a ponytail.

Carve a few different sized spikes out of pink foam, make em nice and even, then mold them. Id suggest casting with a mix of mostly bondo with a bit of fiberglass resin, you can paint it onto the walls of the mold and keep the spikes hollow, plus its really cheap and can take a good beating. Another option would be just making them all out of styrene sheet, youd have to cut out a shitton of triangles, but itd get the job done.

Hi, I'm looking to cosplay Quote from Cave Story. The design's probably not going to be exactly like this, (his other design doesn't have the pockets on his pants/the strap around his thigh), and I was wondering on how to go about making the hat and the antennae? I was just going to buy a trucker hat on ebay that was the right color coordination, but all the ones I found are mesh in the back (which I don't want). For the antennae, I thought maybe I could try painting some broken headphones, but I have no idea how I'd affix the antennae to them and then keep them on my head.

>> No.7235986

>>7235929
No, styrene is thin plastic sheet, so you dont need to coat it in anything before painting. Id suggest PVC glue or superglue to put the pieces together, then if there are creases or edges that need smoothing out, use a little bit of bondo or spot putty (the air-drying version of bondo that comes in little tubes).
