Beth was a sub-brand of Victorian Maiden. It was designed to have cleaner, simpler designs and be more wearable for daily life.

That set wasn't really marketed as a "flight attendant costume." It was a regular otome-style set that included an apron. It was regarded as being a really cute and interesting variation for the standard bell silhouette at the time.

Are you really saying someone can't own something they like because you don't like it?

It isn't about being edgy or cool, it's a really cute military styled lolita dress.
Who says they want to wear it to be a nazi speshul snowflake?
Honestly without the hat you could call it any uniform, considering that olive drab is one of the most used military colors. And if you wanted the black set, bam, same thing.

I don't think that it being 'inspired' by the styles of the uniforms is a terrible thing.
You yourself agreed that the uniforms did in fact look pretty good.
They weren't maliciously attacking jews with their dress or something.
"Watch documentaries about concentration camps" Yeah, I still want the dress, I'm not doing anything related to what they did, I'm just wearing a military uniform inspired lolita dress.

Honestly, it's just a dress, calm down Hitler.

Also

They weren't all C.H.U.Ds or something you know, a lot of them didnt actually know about what was going on, they were just soldiers. Pic related, a child soldier. You can tell by his non kawaii face that he just loved roasting bodies on an open fire.

Really, if it doesn't have a swastika on it, it's just a generic , albeit good-looking, military uniform.

You need to calm your tits.

This is coming from someone who's done extensive research on the holocaust and nazi atrocities for multiple papers at school.

As long as you're not running around killing people in the name of your skinhead leader, it really doesn't matter. It's cute as fuck, and fuck you if you don't like it.

From an objective standpoint, I'm sure a lot of people would agree that the Nazi uniform is good looking. So I personally don't think it's surprising that people want it. And they don't want it because it's 'cool' or 'edgy', but because, like you said, it looks GOOD.

I really hate this attitude of "keep kimonos pure", she's not dressed as a geisha, and kimonos aren't important to the Japanese people anymore as a modern clothing, so they are trying to incorporate the style into modernized dresses as a more couture rather than traditional look which is a way to preserve their culture in itself, like the Chinese did with the modern Cheongsam. Honestly it's not a "kimono" it's "wa", which is Japanese elements being used in a more modern way. As others have said it's maybe a bit sexual, but it's not supposed to be a kimono, it's simply inspired by traditional elements.

Plus, for fucks sake guys, you're all in a huff over modernized traditional Japanese things, but isn't lolita modernized, victorian clothing? Why no problem with that?

If she don't know how to wear a kimono and behave in it, people will forgive her to wear a totally informal piece. If she was pretending to know anything about kimono and trying (and failling) to do a more formal outfit, people would judge her way more harshly.
Plus, as people don't wear kimono often, yukata still dressed up for them (at least as my japanese friends explainded me). Not dressed up enought to go and see geisha, for sure, but dressed up enought to practice dance or cha no yu or simply visiting them (as a stranger, otherwise a komon with a slighty formal obi or an itromuji would be the best option I guess)

I'm sorry but fuck you, you have no idea what the fuck you're talking about. This isn't about a one-off 'modernization' of Japanese/Chinese culture, this is about a history of oriental fetishism and exploitation that the west has had, and the blatant disrespect of a culture that a pop star/person expresses when they take our national dress and turn it into a costume.

The Chinese Qipao (or Cheongsam as white people like to call it) is NOT a modernization of anything traditionally Chinese. It's an invention of the Manchurian empire which took over China, and stuck as a cultural remnant and decision of the PRC government. The majority of Chinese are Han, and Hanfu or Han clothing is very different across many dynasties. However the current government still persists the qipao and magua (for men) as the national costume, but the hanfu movement is growing in popularity within China. Modern fabrics and patterns to qipao or kimono/yukata are what make it 'modernized', and not this disgusting fetish thing KP is wearing. Short sleeves, zippers, lighter fabric etc. make it more versatile as a garment for wearing, and not as a stage costume for white people to go OOOHHHHH SO AZN at. Really the Japanese designer is being insulting to both Japanese and Chinese culture, neither of which they 'have a right to' whether they're Japanese or not. But then again, lots of Japanese street fashion is centered around being exploitative and controversial like wearing swastikas and swear words, so think of this as the equivalent.

>>7219477
If someone did a horrid stage outfit in a mock-fetishized national costume of another country I'm sure the outrage would be just as huge. Victorian/Tudor etc. outfits can not be viewed on the same level as they are not connected to a country's national identity as such. Americans don't have the same cultural and national identity that many Asians do because the country was not founded and developed along cultural paths.

Wow you really sound ignorant and agressive. It's because people like you we can't wear anything good. Hell, I can't wear my svastika kiimono because people think it's Nazi, but svastikas are a traditionnal asian symbol for harmony !

Japanese people themselves re do japanese traditionnal kimono into ball gown or things like that.
Japan want the entire world to know about it's culture and want us to play with us.

Plus, when someone dress in a sexy rococo marie-antoinette bad outfit, nobody bats an eye. Appropriating french culture is okay, because they are white but "exotic" cultures are meant to be untouched ? Bullshit. Culture is meant to be shared and it have to evolve. Her outfit is bad, yes, but she tried to play with a culture she loves, and respect. She failed, but its wasn't made to be disrespectful. Plus most japanese people didn't give a fuck about Katy's outfit.

It wasn't my point tought. I wanted to show what bad cultural appropriation is by this exemple, but as English is not my first language it must sound unclear.
Bad cultural appropriation is tacking a symbol without changing it (literal geisha costume) and making a different and disrespectful statement with it ("Memories of a Geisha", is that the english name ?).
For the Katy Perry dress it's obviously adapted and meant to be something different, not a true geisha costume, so I don't find it offensive, even tought it's bad.

I... hope you aren't actually Chinese, or you would realise a lot of Chinese prefer the modern qipao because it's more flattering. My grandmother prefers it because she thinks it's more fashionable and form fitting. Seriously.

Most of the older generation has the attitude that fashion comes and goes, but the Chinese spirit remains the same no matter what. It possibly has to do with 400+ years of being under Qing rule plus the whole Communist thing, but they're generally more chill about so-called national costume exploitation than you would seem to believe.

Yes, I didn't read the book but the movie was quite offensive by geisha's standard. It wasn't even realised in Japan, no japanese actress wanted to play in it and after the book's release the giesha world closed itself more than ever because they felted betrayed by it.
I've seen the movie and it clearly show geisha as superficial young girls and not true artist. And all the dance scenes and the mizuage emphasis is totally awkward and really far from reality.

Realise? You sound like a third generation immigrant, and I made no comment about the popularity or otherwise of the qipao. I stated its historical origins and the growing movement to restore the proper traditional costume of the han people, and didn't talk about fashion at all. National costume isn't about fashion, it's about your origin and culture. Also many modern hanfu enthusiasts prefer it because it's more modest and casual compared to the form-fitting and high slit qipao. I also mentioned it's a growing movement, which would insinuate it's the minority, and that the government recognizes the qipao as the official national han costume. Oh whoops I'm sorry your grandma obviously knows more about current generation Chinese people and is intimately acquainted with all 1.3 billion of us.

>>7220616
Rococo fashion nor Marie-Antoinette is deeply tied to modern French culture or nationalism, in fact it was the type of culture the revolution fought to overturn and unroot. Rococo fashion is also not the national costume of France, quite different from a kimono, qipao, or sari. However I'm sure if a foreign force with years of oppression, exploitation, and culturally ignorant fetishism of France did have a pop star who bastardized their national costume for entertainment purposes it wouldn't go over well. The Nazi swastika is both inverted and perpendicular to the Buddhist swastika. The issue is also not the use of Japanese or Chinese fashion in a garment, but the ignorant and sadly too familiar amalgamation of the two in a perhaps well meant but ultimately awful creation.
