OTT sweet lolitas love unnatural hair. I'll see if I can dump what I have, I'm not much of a sweet person so most of my unnatural hair pictures are of women in latex, not lolita.

As for hair dye, Special Effects is the best. Manic Panic is a distant second.

Mint and pink are nice for dark skin.

Agreeing about special effects. Some shades of manic panic aren't true to swatches/etc.

>>Mint and pink are nice for dark skin.

So is yellow and lavender. As well as 'bolder' colors like the dark pinks, some shades of darker blue and red.

I saw a dark skinned girl wearing Merry Making Party in blue with a blouse that had dark pink trim and it looked awesome.

I think it depends on your skintone, though.

Pic not mine.

Every time I tried blue it lasted me 2 weeks at most before turning this swampy green. Currently I'm remedying this by first colouring my hair violet and then applying the blue after it's faded a little. Hopefully it'll work,

HOWEVER

I'm losing more blue tones than red ones when I wash the violet out of my hair (becoming more fuchsia than just a faded violet). My guess is that the blue elements don't cling on as well as the red, as 'all' blue hair pigments tend to bleed.

Question: is there a blue out that doesn't bleed like a bitch?

Another question: has anyone tried special effects' 'blue velvet' or any other their blues (I know there already are reviews but I want anon's opinion)? I'm thinking of trying a blue which contains more of a violet base than true blue/green.

Corn silk yellow/white. I'm told that a purple toner is necessary to go platinum, but I just want blue and indigo is good too. Also, people say that blues tend to have a yellow base.

I've had great success with midnight blue by directions. It's quite dark, but you can dilute it a bit. It tends to be less of a greeny tone than other blues I've tried.
You could also try toning it. I do that when my pink streaks start to go a bit brassy. I actually use a bit of midnight blue in conditioner for my toner.

I use the same brand. I've used rubine, neon blue and violet. The blue-based colours fade really fast compared to the reds. They also tend to go sort of grey-green if you don't freshen the colour up regularly. The red fades nicely, though, and more slowly. Usually I don't bother to freshen it until I touch up my regrowth, because it doesn't go particularly brassy or gross looking.

I had my hair dyed every possible color, for the last three years. The easyest color to match to lolita is white/grey, is not such a unnatural color, but it looks good with anything.
Dying it pastel usually gets you tied up to sweet, but with nice coords you can pull of even something gothic.
My skin is something between yellow and tanned, and at first the colors look weird, but after some time you get used to it and start feeling familiar with the color.

My absolute favourites for dark blues are SFX Blue Velvet and Directions Midnight Blue. I find Blue Velvet bleeds more than the Midnight Blue and is often mistaken for purple, but stays better. Are you starting from naturally light hair or are you bleaching? Even if your hair is light naturally, destroying it a teeny bit with bleach will help the pigment to stay better. Also leaving it on with a plastic bag on your head overnight/only washing it out with lukewarm water initially is good.

>> No.7191392

>>7191064
See, that's what I want, the (slight?) purpleness of blue velvet. Instead of doing a two step process neutralizing the yellow tones by needing to add violet separately, it can just be done in one go. That and I'd rather have my hair fade to purple than green.

Oh, I'm bleaching, got black asian hair.
-bleach:check
-extended time applying:check
-rinse with cool water:check

Really dark indigo, to the point that people don't usually notice it fresh unless I'm under sunlight (I had it in my fringe for a while). >>7190819
is slightly purpler than what my hair looked like after 2 washes. Have a look on beeunique if you want, there's some good representative photos there. I'm Asian as well - I usually do 2 bleaches for ~45 minutes with my hair covered with plastic/heat applied to speed up the reaction and put my blues through over pale yellow, my hair has to be dry and nearly straw for it to take for any meaningful length of time. Midnight Blue definitely fades through green but is less ugly than the fade of Manic Panic After Midnight, it's more like a nice deep teal. In my experience I've never really been able to keep Directions or Manic Panic nice for more than 6 washes, except when I do the blue in conditioner + conditioner first then shampoo roots + rinse with lukewarm (tried with super dilute vinegar for pH but the amount of staying power I gain for the hassle of washing my hair in a sink is not okay) in which case I can stretch it to about 10. SFX gives me 8-10 without any of that.

This is me with the SFX Cupcake Pink in my hair. I got it done a little over a month ago.

I went to a salon to get it done. My hair was medium brown, but it was perviously dyed auburn, so they had to bleach it twice in order to get out the orange. The longer you leave the dye on the better. I know the back of the bottle says only 15 to 30 minutes but 2 to 3 hours is more like it.

I feel like pink is probably the easiest colour to do.

My suggestion for unnatural hair dye is RAW. It's a demi-permanent dye so it lasts way longer than Manic Panic or Special Effects, it's very conditioning, and all 3 or 4 of the colours I've used have smelled like bubblegum. I think it's because it's a produce based dye, but I can't remember at this point.
Seriously, I had my whole head of hair dyed fire-truck red for over a year, and of the 5 or 6 different brands I've used (Splat, Special Effects, Manic Panic, two box dyes, and RAW) it's the most long-lasting, vibrant, and hydrating one.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but can I mix a dye like manic panic, special effects, or raw, with a chemical box dye? I use a drugstore box dye to get my hair to be dark brown, but I would like it to have a slight red or purple tone to it. In the past i've used reddish brown dyes and they always turned orange within days (even with purple shampoo products)

I only get the opportunity to dye my hair on weekends, and I don't want to dye my hair twice in that time period (dark brown, then red on top of it). So if I could do it all at once that would be great. Or would I be better off adding a bit of special effects/some natural dye in with my daily conditioner to keep it from getting orange?

NO. Do not do that, ever! Don't even mix different brands of stand alone dyes! (Manic Panic, SFX, etc) The chemical reactions could either mess stop the box dye from working, or completely fuck up your hair.
I'd suggest going for the idea of just doing your hair a permanent dark brown, and mixing a semi- or demi-permanent dark red or purple into your conditioner. It'd probably be best follow the box instructions for dyeing your hair, and when you get to the after step of conditioning, to make a very saturated mix of conditioner and red dye and let that sit on your hair for a couple hours.

On an unrelated note, does anyone else ever get annoyed when an unnatural hair appreciation sort of blog posts very obviously photoshopped hair? It's the same sort of feeling I get with the wig thing. Pic unrelated,

Dye it dark brown one weekend, add the red or purple in the next weekend. That will give your hair time to recoup, and avoid destroying it by mixing dyes.

If you /want/ to mix dyes, you need to use the same brand, and not the drugstore box brands. They have specific chemicals that react to make the colors, if you add something else, it has a good chance of not working right, and you'll end up with some fucked up color.

But I think colored hair works for just about anything nowadays.

I use RAW and Manic Panic which both seem to last forever and I can never get it to fade or wash out. I guess I'm just luck with it.

Red will stick around much longer than any color. It stains it bad and the blue doesn't last long at all. Green stays for longer and purple is half and half depending on the brand.

Pink is just like red but it actually fades quicker.

Here's my hair unbrushed and dried after a shower. The dark parts are from it being purple and red and not faded while the rest turned green. It's been that way for about a month now.

The time lasting mostly depends on the person themselves, with the length of time the dye is left in, how often the hair is washed, and any previous dyeing/bleaching done on the hair.
Still, I can personally say that RAW stays brighter much longer than any of the others under the same conditions, hence it being demi over semi.

Or were you asking about me saying I had it red for a over a year? I re-dyed it every month or so for that time period, testing out a lot of brands. Sorry if that wasn't clear!

Hm, I don't know if this is a silly question, but I'm an amateur at dying so here it goes.

My hair has been various shades of pink for over two years, and I go to a hairdresser to get my roots done every month or so. Thing is, I've always been content with my hair fading to a light peach color before redying so I never thought to use toner.

However, I'm starting to get tired of the yellow undertones/fading to peach and desire a purer pink. Even when it's dyed pastel, my hair takes several months to fade all the way out to bleached-yellow (which doesn't look good with my yellowy olive skin) so I'm wondering if it's fine to use toner on top of a faded but not-completely-gone dye job?

I honestly don't know anything about how that shit works, and apparently my hair dresser doesn't either (Most of her clients are middle aged and old ladies. I was the first unnatural color she ever did so we're kinda figuring it out together).

I've used bleach and toner on top of hair before. Mostly, it'll work but if you have a dark color in, it'll just fade it out to whatever dominant color is used in the mix of what your hair is.

So pink is white + red, it'll bring out the red more but if it's really light and pastel, you should be fine. I've done it before and it's worked but I'm sure it varies person to person or, hair to hair

Nice coverage, not too smelly and a standard price. It contains peroxide and silicates and all sorts of bad things though, so I think it's slowly killing my hair whilst making it look super glossy. Photo is me having left it in for a bit less than I was supposed to, with direct sunlight and shade

Most likely.

So when you want a pastel color, you get white conditioner, doesn't matter the brand so long as it's not colored.
Then you put a tiny amount of the hair dye you want in to a bowl with a good amount of white conditioner, mix it up.
See if it turns the color you want and put it throughout your entire head.

Leave it in for 2 1/2+ hours. Then wash it out.

I don't take many photos of myself, but I'm planning to dye my hair again soon, teal/dark green and wear that with gothic and classic as well. The only problem with bluish-purple is some colors in classic goes better with more natural tones.

Thass beautiful!

I've googled how to ombre/dip-dye hair, and what I'm getting is "bleach ends; apply colour dye with a brush to ends"
But I don't see how this would accomplish a gradient/gradual transition from natural to dyed hair. The pictures that accompany these guides always have dye-jobs that have no fade - just a straight or slightly jagged line where the colour begins.
How to make dip dye look like a gradual transition?

>> No.7200138

>>7200110
You have to bleach a bit up higher than where you want the dye for a shorter time than you need, then bleach a second time a bit lower. It will give a gradient affect when you add the dye because the places that are bleached darker will dye darker.

The bleaching process can cause frizz, which doesn't happen with synthetic wigs or hair pieces. Glossing treatments can help restore the look of 'virgin' hair, but often contain developer to work well and therefore will fade dyes like manic panic.

Try a creme based bleach and inquire as to if your hairdresser will be using a powder or creme based. Creme is more expensive; it has more lipids, processes longer so there is less repeated washes and application. Also, if your hairdresser has not booked 3 hours or even more depending on the length of your hair, walk away. I have seen correct all over lightening take up to 6 hours in one sitting. Or smaller amounts over a week's time.

I just liked that last one... with the lavender bangs. Notice the slight 'frizz' though.

If you have fine hair however, lightening can sometimes improve texture in terms of volume and styling capacity. With thick coarse hair, lightening may make it super unmanageable.

By the way, rainbow hair generally never looks good. Stick with no more then 3 to 4 colors.

The rest of my pictures are just particularly good ones I saved from hair crazy. You all can just look that up yourselves though so no need to share them. Last one, my favorite color. I did this a year back. It was ice berg blue, a manic panic color that came out in Hot Topic. If you find it, I recommend ordering it. This was about 8 foils.

As for bleaching, I've had platinum hair since it was short, and just touched up roots. What I can tell you is, do not apply straight lightener to remove funky colors, use a shampoo cap with a good quality bleach. Cut it half bleach mixture with exactly half in 'grams' shampoo. Use 40, that deducts it to 20. Works much better then straight bleach which can force the color deeper and stain the cortex,

You dont need a lot of toner, it is bleach that you need. Toner only really is good for getting out brassiness in your hair, so like from blond to white kind of look.

>>7206670 makes me feel like how she did her bangs are different than the rest of her hair. Idk if there is really a Taro color out there, and I almost feel like her hair is brown for the most part and she is using some temp chalk or something to add purple along with whatever shopping she does. I tis brown not dark blonde, you can tell from the ends of >>7206665.

So I dont think that what you want is realistic. There isnt going to be a way to have that light of a brown that will look purple only sometimes, as the only time that happens is when your hair is too dark to take the color on properly. In that case the color only shows in the light, not based on what you wear.

And this is not just about dying our hair- it's about dying our hair and wearing lolita.
People already have tons of assumptions about lolita. You can be sure that if we're wearing lolita, we give zero fucks about what the 'male perspective is'.

But thanks for the dramarama anyway cause arguing is fun and papa moot said we can't anymore.

You're lucky though. I bleached mine once and it was a disaster. I had to cut it short (it was mid-back length and had to cut to a bob because of the ends snapping) and even then it was rough and dull. Granted, I didn't know much of hair care at that time, but I followed the bleach box instructions and my hair got destroyed the same.
Some hair can take bleach well, some don't. So, for anyone wanting to do it, I recomend experimenting with a little strand of hair before and see how the hair takes the damage.

That hair color is almost exactly what color I want to dye my hair. My hair is bleached, currently very uneven and horrible, yellowy blonde up front and on top, and a dark blonde in the back, with orange tones throughout. Haven't fixed it because my hair feels really thin and weak, compared to how it usually is, and no money. I'm going to dye my hair Rockabilly Blue from Manic Panic soon, hopefully the purpleness in it will help with my hair disaster. But that picture, I need to know what color that is, or something similar to it. Any help?

Figure someone might be able to help - I've got dark brown to blonde ombre and I'd like to add red in the middle so it goess from brown>red>blonde. I also need lighten the tips of my hair since it's more dark caramel than blonde.

Suggestions on how I can get the red in there and to make it have a smooth transition rather than ending up with just a blotchy red dye job?

That sounds like it'd look bad, and the pic you showed looks bad too.

after midnight blue (non amplified) stayed that colour for ages over my Asian bleached ginger

I think that it'll be really hard to diy without either looking super blocky or just plain bad.
