I'd really like to expand my gothic folder, since a lot of it seems like just dark classic. Anyone want to discuss the differences?

Example #1, this feels more classic than gothic, but I'm not sure.

I was thinking about making a venn diagram about how the 3 main styles intersect each other in different places, but essentially I think it has a lot to do with x or y colors + x or y motifs (+ a bit of cut) = style. For example I would consider >>7178196
on the sweeter side of gothic, whereas your picture is a more classic gothic coord. Similarly, you could take a couple classic coords, one of say one of IW's lighter/pastel prints like Rabbit Letter, and make a very sweet coord with that while still being classic, then take say Westminster Choir from them and that would be usually a very gothic classic coord... etc, you could do the same for sweet (velveteen AP pieces? Can often make nearly gothic but still sweet coords. Or case in point, the term bittersweet.)

...I hope any of this makes sense, I think it would make more as a graphic. Also, contributing.

Glad to help! When a girl gets painted bad colors, people can really go nuts. I'm sure you've seen the kind of threads we had before the rule change. Fighting back is what they tell us in school, but it only puts others on the defensive and gives more fuel for 'omg how could she say that!'
I've seen girls posted to ita threads who went in and said, "WOW YOU'RE ALL CUNTS", who were then torn apart. And other girls who didn't react to a single insult, taking it as constructive criticism, asked for advice, and the mood turned a full 180.

we actually made a mini film. sort of a lolita blair witch. the blair witch was a sweet turned goth lolita, who because she was sold a replica took to stealing sweet lolitas and selling their damaged clothes on the comm sale. its really silly, but was a lot of fun to make.

For me it's partly the super dramatic makeup, you wouldn't see those dark eyes and really red lip in a sweet coord and rarely in a classic one. The lace up ribbon socks are also a Moitie standby, the lace brooch on her chest is a very aristocrat touch. And she's always very much in the "gothic" color palette of black, stark white, and touches of of intense color like electric blue or blood red. Finally, her clothing has very classic Moitie styling, super simple but lavish frills on edges, puffly sleeved blouse. If it was a classic dress you'd see more pintucks or something. If it was sweet it would be more bell-shaped and less plain.

I think it depends on your figure as well as your legs. I have halfway decent legs, but in most cases, I think I look best when the skirt ends just past my knees. The fronts of my thighs sort of swell out a bit if that makes sense (my friend calls them cheerleader thighs), so some of the shorter dresses you posted would look awkward on me. also above-the-knee dresses make my knee caps look weird. I look fine in shorts and mini skirts, though. It's just something about Lolita skirts of a certain length.

Very much this. I also have relatively large muscular thighs but more slender calves, so skirts that hit right at the narrowest point of my knee are very slimming whereas ones that hit higher make me look like I have T-rex legs. Likewise, skirts that hit at the broadest part of my calves make my legs look stumpy and fat, but miniskirts that hit right where my thighs curve in a bit are very flattering. It really depends on the person what looks nice and what doesn't. Same goes for socks, actually.
I personally think the longer skirts are much more elegant but not everyone can pull them off.

Too true. I used to have chokelate stick legs and would only wear skirts the cover my knees because I find knees that are thicker than the calves just very unattractive. So especially her skirt length seems extremely unflattering to me.
I also really like tea-length on tall girls because it doesn't look so dumpy on them.

I like this except for the shoes (and glasses- there's so much going on in the head area already- but that's not something you can usually do much about so w/e). Those boots are too rugged looking for lolita, especially a slightly sweet gothic coord like this.

Harlequin tights are often worn with circusy coordinates which are not your typical sweet lolita coordinates. They are sometimes worn with sweet but not only with sweet. Wearing a certain style of socks doesn't make something sweet lolita. The pink dress? It has classic lolita elements to it and I would say it is more classic than sweet. It is more mature, the colour palette is muted, the print is more suited to classic than sweet. The colour is not common for classic, though, but for the most part the subtle detailing is. Note the detailing, most of which is more classic styled aside from the size of the bows.

Pfft, I wore gothic clothing for 5 years and have been a lolita for almost 8. I am aware of what gothic is. None of those outfits have an overall gothic feel or style to them. None. Look back at the pictures, not just the thumbnails.

For those of you who can't tell the difference, look at this. This dress could be coordinated in a sweet, classic or gothic way. Here it is coordinated in a gothic way. Note the spooky make up, the hair accessories, the cross in her hair. The bat bag, the vertical striped tights, the platforms, the cross pin and the blouse. All of the above have a somewhat sinister and gothic feel, which gothic lolita needs to have.

Starting out, stick to dark colors, but don't try to use too many pieces from your sweet wardrobe, since then you'll just look like a sweet lolita in black.

Go for a more simplistic cut with an a-line skirt. High collars and elegant lace will help you out, and high-waist corset skirts are always a good staple in a gothloli closet. Try more elegant headpieces; instead of big sweet-styled bows try a flower corsage or a high-quality stiff-brim bonnet.

For shoes, go with chunky platforms ala Moitie or elegant heels. Try to avoid tea parties, since they're really too cute for a goth outfit. Accessories like rosaries, black lace gloves, coffins and crucifixes will make you super gawth, too.

Obviously buying from big name goth lolita brands like Atelier Pierrot & MMM will help you, as well. Just use your best judgment and kinda style yourself like you're pretending to be a vampire for a day and you'll get the general idea.

Square necked is fine as long as it doesn't look too sweet! Really as long as you avoid really massive peter pan collars you should be fine.

For taobao, definitely Surface Spell and Infanta, HMHM have some nice pieces sometimes, Ichigo15 has great gothic lolita and ouji pieces alike, Dear Celine around autumn usually has some great blouses, though the rest of their stock is pretty classic/sweet. Elpress is mostly a classic store but they do have some nice goth pieces up right now.

I buy a lot of my blouses, heels and headpieces offbrand, as well. Once you get a good eye, shopping for a gothloli closet is pretty easy.

You're probably buying a really cheap-ass corset that is a glorified tube and makes you look worse than you would without it. A good, real corset is expensive, has good steel boning, and will actually take you in a good handful of inches.
